Monday, 27 June 2022:
The Gold Experience Prince (billed as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince) (Legacy/ NPG) (released 2022, original album and promo was released in 1995)
For Record Store Day (Part 2) which took place on 18 June, a smattering of albums were released and none were more anticipated by me than this album by Prince (yes, he technically wasn’t called that then, but I’m calling him Prince here because that is how I refer to him in my day to day activities and whenever I talk about any of his albums).  I’ve not played on an actual Record Store Day in eons.  The idea of getting up at some ungodly hour and then driving another hour to either Champaign, Bloomington or another 40 minutes to Springfield is so unappealing that I just take my chances and buy things either after 12 noon on Saturdays or a few days after.  This year that cost me a copy of Live Seeds by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, but since I have that album on CD (in the cardboard box with the hardback book of photos) I didn’t really need it.  The thing about RSD is that you don’t need any of this nutty stuff.  Some of it is very cool, but most is redundant so I never really get worked up.
This year knowing The Gold Experience was coming out on vinyl I knew I had to have this.  This is one of my all-time favorite Prince albums and truly one of his very best works.  I figured everyone would a copy so I decided to awaken at 5:00 and be on the road by 6:00 and be in a city that has record stores by 7:00.  That wouldn’t get me a very good spot in line and probably wouldn’t get me a Prince album.  So when I looked on the RSD site and they informed fans that there were over 14 thousand copes I decided not to even bother getting out of bed on RSD.  I’d find one, so why waste the gasoline?
The morning of RSD, I awoke early (i generally get to bed around 1:00 and am up around 5:30, I don’t get or need much sleep) and I thought I’d go out of town somewhere, why not?  I thought I’d better check online and see what prices this is going for.  It was 5:45 a.m. and I hit up discogs to discover an American dealer already selling a copy and the price wasn’t what I expected.  The guy was asking $35 so I wasted zero time, bought the album and it wasn’t even 6:00 in the morning!  I checked the site later in the day and this particular dealer was offering another album of what I just bought, but the price had incrementally increased.  I’ve seen dealers do this in the past.
The album arrived in today’s mail and it is a replica of the promotional two LP version that was originally released in 1995 in this rather sparse packaging which does recall a promo (or a bootleg).  The interesting thing is that this is a three sided album but rather than do an etching (there were some in the late 90s) Warner Brothers at the time offer up a series of remixes of I Know You.  That’s an interesting offer to fill out Side 4 and I think it beats the heck out of an etching.  NPG Records and Legacy opted to replicate this and release it first for Record Store Day.
Above you saw the album cover and the back of the album.  Below check out close ups (as close as I could get because they are affixed to the album cover and the reflective shrink wrap is over them save for the first one I show.
Tumblr media
The second sticker is found on the back jacket.  It includes an essay by music critic Jim Walsh (someone who isn’t David Fricke).  Here it s close up:
Tumblr media
This album is pressed on “Gold” vinyl (but looks more like urine after too much Vitamin B12).  Here is what it looks like.  The second photo is taken outside on my back deck.  Yes, you can see my hand ad my camera.  Normally I wouldn’t post such a photo but I want people to understand I do not use an iPhone but instead an actual camera.  Yes, it is digital of course.

And I close out showing all four labels for this 2 LP set.

So Unclean
1. Quick! Chinese or Mexican? Both!
2. How many significant others have you had in your WHOLE life? I don’t think any of them would count as “significant”
3. I have to ask: What does the last message you received say? “I saw the corpse touching party photo again”
4. How about the last message you sent? *laughing face emoji*
5. Have you shared any kisses today? No.
6. Did the last person you kissed have soft lips, or were they kind of crusty? Soft. Can I just say that “crusty” is like the worst possible adjective you could have used.
7. Do you think your life will be any different a year from now? Yeah because I’ll probably be in Australia and working and stuff
8. What is in your wallet? My licence, bank card, health insurance card, metro ticket and I think about 30 euro
9. Have you ever been in a fist fight? 11 years of martial arts will do that to you
10. When was the last time you went to the doctor? Back when I got my yellow fever shot in august
11. Are you going out of town anytime soon? I'm going back to australia in 2 weeks. There was talk of a family friend maybe paying for me to visit her in london next week but idk what’s happening with that.
12. Do you hate your ex? There is one I dislike, the rest are fine.
13. When are you going to get a haircut? When I’m back in Australia
14. Can you fit your hand around your wrist? Yes
15. When was the last time you applied chapstick? A couple of hours ago. Need to put more on though. Winter is a bitch for cracked lips. I swear I have to drink like 10 litres of water to stop them drying out
16. Are you a coffee person or a tea person? Neither, but if I have to choose, then tea.
17. When’s the last time you had a phone conversation for more than ten minutes? Does a voice call on google hangout count? If yes, then today with Maggie and Patrick while we played The Elder Scrolls
18. All the people you’ve kissed, what did their names start with? God, I’ll just list the letters in alphabetical I guess: A, B, C, D, E, I, J, M, N, R, Z Most of those letters are multiple people though. Surprisingly there are two Z’s and neither of them are a name you expect.
19. What did you and your ex fight about most? I have never had anything last long enough for fights.
20. Don’t you love long hugs? Generally, no. But if they’re from certain people, yes.
21. And long kisses? Sure, why not

25. Did you think braces were cool when you were little? I don’t recall ever having an opinion

27. What is the last song you added to your iTunes library? That would have been an album by Alvaro Soler. But I’m going to put a bunch of new songs on there soon before my flight back to aus
28. Are you embarrassed by any of the songs in your iTunes? Not really. I have no shame.
29. When was the last time you were sick? No idea but I’ll probably get a cold from the 26 hours of flying I’ll be doing soon.
30. Who was your Valentine this year? Nobody
31. When did you first kiss the last person you kissed? September
32. And when did you last kiss the last person you kissed? October
33. Did you borrow that shirt from somebody? No
34. What was the last thing you put in your mouth? Dark chocolate with almonds

40. How often do you get confused about someone’s tone through the internet or texting? (For example, taking something serious that was intended to be taken sarcastically?) Not often. My friends and I get each other pretty well and if we can’t understand the tone we just ask.
41. What was your most awkward sexual experience? (If you don’t have one/are too embarrassed to share, what is the funniest sex story you’ve heard?) I don’t think I really have any funny or awkward stories. The most amusing one for me was fooling around in the back of his car and ducking every time another car drove past and him saying that if anyone looked in they’d only see me because I’m so pasty I pretty much glow in the dark.
42. Have you ever called in and won a radio contest, and, if so, what was it, and what’d you win? No but this reminds me that when I was a kid I won an easter colouring competition and my prize was a 3kg chocolate bunny which my dad smashed up with a hammer and put all the pieces in a cooler and then most of it was eaten by him and my brother. Although in fairness to my brother he did trade me a stuffed monkey toy for half the chocolate.
43. If you’ve used pads, do you prefer them with or without wings and why? What kind of sadistic fuck uses pads without wings? Fun fact: pads are the reason I know the spanish word for “wing”
44. Who was the last person you had actual sex with in a dream? I think I had a sex dream about my ex recently

51. What do you want to be when you grow up? Who the fuck even knows. I’m open to suggestions if you wanna throw some at me

67. Is your best friend single? Yeah
68. What are you going to be doing later? Sleeping hopefully. I’m so tired
69. The last kind of lotion you used, what does it smell like? Probably like lotion with argon oil. Y’know because that’s what it was.
70. Have you hung out with any guys recently? I have not physically hung out with anyone for a long time.
71. Can you go a whole day without drinking any pop or eating any sweets? Yeah, that’s not uncommon. I’ve kinda surprised myself by how unintentionally healthy my diet has gotten this past year. Like, I eat a ton of vegetables every day and drink mostly water, milk and orange juice. And I started eating eggs for some protein too.
72. Who’s the weirdest teacher at your school? There was a teacher at my highschool called (I think) Mr. Moore. He was always powerwalking and/or spilling his coffee. 73. How old were you when you learned how to ride a bike? 5 or 6
74. Who do you talk to first when you’re upset? Mum or Maggie

82. Have you ever skipped school because you were tired? Not school but I skipped uni lectures a lot
83. What was the last thing you had to drink? Water.
84. Your most recent ex needs you at 3 AM, do you go? Depends what he needs me for, but probably 85. Would you rather kiss someone 5 years older or 5 year younger? 5 years older. Five younger is like 18 and hell nah I’m not going to kiss an 18yo kid.
86. Do you like your parents? Yeah they're pretty awesome as far as parents go. My Ma especially is just a fucking awesome lady, I know it sounds cliche but she is genuinely one of my best friends.

93. Anybody tell you they miss you lately? When I told Ma I miss her she said she misses me too
94. Have you ever kissed someone who was high? Yeah
95. What were you doing at 4am this morning? I’ll tell what I wasn’t fucking doing was sleeping even though I’d already been in bed for 3 hours.

99. Do you know a secret about your ex and if he/she pisses you off, will you tell? No

101. Do people ever call you by your last name? Actually yeah there’s one guy at work that calls me by my last name but he’s gonna get confused once I’m back because my brother works there too now.
102. Have you ever gone camping? I used to spend a couple of nights with my aunt and uncle every year when they went camping over the christmas break
103. Would you sleep with the last person who Facebook messaged you? Probs not
104. When’s the next time you will consume alcohol? Whenever I buy beer next, probably within the next week

Serves 12-14 persons If you are a chocolate lover like me, I am sure you will enjoy this amazing cake. It is the basic recipe for a classic Greek chocolate cake, we use for special occasions like birthdays, Valentine's Day, anniversary, Christmas or anytime we crave chocolate 😅😍! Like all good things, it needs some effort to prepare! The extra I used to decorate the cake (which is of course optional) is Greek Lacta Milk Chocolate (the absolute favourite chocolate in Greece). I highly recommend it. Near the end of this recipe, you will also see photos of other cakes I prepared using the same ingredients! Calling all chocolate lovers out there-let's unite 😋😉👍!!             Suitable for lacto-ovo vegetarians.
INGREDIENTS Ingredients for the sponge cake: 120 gr / 4.2 oz or 1 cup Self rising Flour sifted 5 large Eggs at room temperature 220 gr / 7.8 oz or 1 cup crystal Sugar 30 gr / 1 oz or 1/3 cup Cocoa Powder sifted 8 gr / 0.3 oz / 2tsp. Vanilla Sugar ½ tsp. Salt
Tumblr media
Ingredients for the chocolate filling: 300 gr / 10.5 oz Dark Chocolate 50% cocoa 150 ml or 2/3 cup fresh Milk Very Hot!! 300 ml or 1 & 1/4 cup Whipping Cream (double cream) 35% fat
Tumblr media
Ingredients for the syrup: 150 gr / 5.5 oz or 2/3 cup Crystal Sugar 150 ml or 2/3 cup Water Optional: 1 Shot Brandy (good quality like Metaxa 7*)
Tumblr media
Ingredients for decorating (optional): 2 x 200 gr (2 x 7 oz) Greek Milk Chocolate Lacta (or any other milk chocolate) Thick Red ribbon 1 m / 3.2ft   A fresh Red Rose
Tumblr media
Method: Start by preparing the sponge cake (the day before): Crack the 5 eggs and place them in the bowl of a strong electric mixer. Beat them in high speed for 5' until they become white and fluffy, adding the sugar, vanilla and salt. After 5' the egg mixture should be ready! Stop the mixer.
Tumblr media
In a separate bowl, sift the flour with the cocoa powder. Scatter gradually the sifted flour and cocoa into the egg mix, blending it gently in with a spoon. You don't want the cake dough to deflate!
Tumblr media
Next, take a large oven tray lined with parchment paper, and place a round spring form of 26cm/10in without bottom (with side opening). Brush or spray it with oil. Empty the sponge cake dough into the form. It is now ready to be baked.
Tumblr media
Place the oven tray in a preheated oven, top / bottom heat = @ 180℃ / 350℉, and bake for 30'. After 30' test if the cake is baked through by inserting a long toothpick into it. It needs to come out clean! Next, place the tray on a rack to cool down completely. When it has cooled down, remove the form from around the cake. The cake should look fluffy and light. Reserve.             Tip: You can prepare the cake ahead of time, and store it in a plastic bag either in the fridge for 1 week or in the freezer for 1 month.
Tumblr media
Prepare ahead the chocolate filling (same day of serving): Place the dark chocolate broken in chunks in a deep bowl. Add the hot milk.   Let it stand for a while so that the milk will melt the chocolate. In the meantime, beat the cream with a hand mixer for 3'-4' until it makes soft peaks and turns into whipped cream! When ready, store the whipped cream in the fridge until used. After a while, use a spoon to stir the now melted chocolate with the milk until they are completely blended. Pour the whipped cream on top and mix it together well with the chocolate, using a spatula. The chocolate filling is now ready! Put a plastic wrap on top and place it in the fridge for 6 hours to cool and set!
Tumblr media
After 5h, prepare the syrup: Turn on the heat to low. In a saucepan, combine sugar and water. Bring to a boil and constantly stir gently until syrup becomes clear. Let the syrup boil for 2' more, gently stirring it every minute. After 2' turn off the heat. Now pour the brandy (optional but highly recommended) and let the syrup cool down completely. Assembly time (after 6h): Place the sponge cake in a nice platter. With a sharp, big knife cut it horizontally in half. Reserve the top half in another plate.
Tumblr media
Use a brush to sprinkle half of the syrup on top and all around the bottom cake layer. Bring the chocolate filling from the fridge. Use half to spread it around the top of the bottom cake. Now place the other cake layer on top. Drizzle it with the rest of syrup as well. Add a bit of syrup on the sides of the cake too. Tip: Before adding the chocolate filling on top, clean the plate with kitchen paper. Spread first some of the chocolate to cover the sides of the cake. Straighten the sides with your spatula.
Tumblr media
Fill a piping bag with the rest of the chocolate filling and make beautiful patterns on top. Fill any gaps you can see. The basic chocolate cake is now ready! Clean the plate edges with some wet kitchen paper. Cool it in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving! It will stay fresh for a couple of days.
Tumblr media
Optional decoration: If you would like to decorate the cake with Lacta milk chocolate (or any), cut the Lacta in fourths.
Tumblr media
Stick the chocolate pieces all around the sides of the cake. You can serve the cake like this!
Tumblr media
If you want however, to decorate your cake especially for Valentine's Day, Wedding Anniversary or just to celebrate Love, wrap around a bright red ribbon, making a double knot at 1 end or a bow. You could also add a fresh red rose on top (very fashionable at the moment!)
Tumblr media
Other ideas using the basic Chocolate cake: Another Valentine's Cake I made with a white heart from icing in the middle.
Tumblr media
A child's birthday Cake using a double quantity to make the shape of a cutie baby Bear!
Tumblr media
I even used the same recipe to make Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer for Christmas! Isn't he soo cute? (detail: his teeth are made of 2 chewing gums 😅!)
Tumblr media
Serving suggestion: The best dessert after a great dinner with the love of your life 😍! Serve it with chilled champagne of course!! “🎶Sweet for my sweet, sugar for my honey ♬”.
Tumblr media
An ultimately chocolaty Cake while not heavy and perfectly moist with the subtle hint of brandy! Classic, timeless value ❤! Greece Travel tip:                           Greek Chocolate Lacta widely known as «the sweetest chunk of your life» is the 1st milk chocolate in sales in Greece. Lacta milk chocolate was created in the 60's at the Pavlidis factory. The "Pavlidis" company was founded in 1841 by Spyridon Pavlidis in the center of Athens as a "Pastry Shop" and was famous for its fine baklava and loukoumia. In 1952 the Pavlidis family created their first Greek chocolate. Dimitrios Pavlidis, successor of Spyridon, transfers the headquarters of the company to Piraeus Street on the busy neighborhood of Katw Petralona, Athens and in 1876 founded the first chocolate factory in Greece. Who doesn’t love Lacta chocolate 😍? Excerpts from Frn.blogspot.com Photos from Katw Petralona

A Tribute to the Greek style Convenient Store -“Periptero” 🇬🇷💙!
A Greek Periptero-Περίπτερο is a scenic small kiosk/stand, conveniently located on the side or the corner of a street! It is a super mini-store which covers an area of only 1.3 m x 1.5 m, and usually has three windows and one door, from where the peripteras (kiosk operator), comes in and out.
It sells everything you can think of and would like to purchase in a hurry, sometimes even from your car: water, cold drinks, salty and sweet snacks, tobacco and cigarettes, prepaid phone cards, newspapers, magazines, toys, gadgets, maps, ice cream, candy, cookies, chocolates (my favourite, e.g. Lacta or ION with almonds), gum etc. It even has some over-the-counter medicines like painkillers. Depending on the area where the kiosk is located, the variety of the products differs to cover more specific needs like touristic zones etc.
Historically, the first Periptero kiosk in Greece opened on Panepistimiou Street in Athens in 1911, selling mostly tobacco and newspapers. It was given by the state to war veterans, disabled people or families with a lot of children, as a form of financial assistance and customarily the business was later passed on to children, grandchildren etc.
In the 50’s and the 60’s, Periptero kiosks became very popular, because they also had telephones, which was really handy, since most Greek households didn’t have landlines, so the Periptero was the only way to communicate with family or friends.
Conveniently open from early morning until late hours and some for 24/7, you will certainly come across one Periptero whether you are in a big city, village or a Greek island.
In small villages or neighborhoods, the Periptero owner has traditionally been a central figure and main source of gossip! Also Periptero was always the center of the village because everybody was gathering around it to buy the newspaper, read and discuss latest news. In many occasions, the kiosk owner-Peripteras has helped by giving directions to tourists or when somebody was lost! I have used him for directions many times, usually by buying something small, like a gum. A life-savior in many instances!
In my childhood years, I was always being sent to the local Periptero to get cigarettes for my Pappou and Dad (hahaha innocent times) while being bribed with an extra 1 drachma to get an ION chocolate for myself!!
I also remember the weekly anticipation to get “Micky Mousse” Magazine to continue my collection! I was also saving from my allowance to buy a special “Gofretta” which offered a small gift i.e. a card of a famous football player I was collecting in an album. If the album was full, you were entitled to a gift, so all kids were bringing these cards at school to exchange during breaks with fellow students, with the ones you were missing. At the end though, there was always 1 card missing to complete the album...typical trick to make you buy more chocolates.
To date, there are approximately 12,000 Periptero-kiosks all around Greece! A new law in 2015 demands that once a periptero license terminates, it cannot be renewed as it used to and can not be passed on to the descendants. This law together with the financial crisis, which also hit these beautiful kiosks, has witnessed a lot of Periptera closing down, although you can still find some around, especially in very central areas.
I certainly hope they will not completely disappear in the next decade and become a distant memory of bygone times. I would be very sad if that happened, because they are so convenient and I have so many fond memories of them especially from my childhood years 💙🇬🇷🏚😢🙏.
Periptera have always been a part of Greek history and folk lifestyle as a Taverna or a Kafeneio, businesses which are also unfortunately diminishing! Please try to support these beautiful small businesses whenever you see them!

0,3 oz / 2 κ.γ.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Don’t You Wait: The Best of The Week
Solange. Photo: Paradigm Talent Agency
Well, the Super Bowl is here, which means a ton of artists will be on hand performing all across the city, although many of you won’t be able to get close enough due to enormous crowds. Solange, ZZ Top, Lizzo, and Polyphonic Spree will all perform here this week while most of us attempt to get around all of the chatter and mess. Houston, your next seven days are all planned out.
On Wednesday you can start off at Discovery Green and surrounding areas for the Super Bowl Live event featuring Americana rockers Buxton.  Far from heroes in this neck of the woods, the band’s last album Half A Native is one of the best albums a label ever botched the release of.  Aside from the swooning notes from that album, the group brings it live for the all ages event that gets going around 3 pm with sets from Second Lovers and more with additional information here.
Walter’s will host the synth heavy jams of LA’s popular Cold Cave.  Mixing dark wave, noise, and synthpop, Cold Cave reminds me of a lot of what Great Britain offered up in the ’80s.  Known for an energetic live show, their latest release, The Idea of Love from last year, is pretty enjoyable.  The new wave goth pop of LA’s Drab Majesty will be on hand as direct support an opener and his live sets are supposed to be a real trip.  The all ages show has doors at 8 pm and tickets between $15 and $17.
  Youth Code. Photo: Dais Records
Eastdown Warehouse will have the return of Pittsburgh’s Code Orange.  The kind of hardcore these guys bring isn’t usually my deal, but their latest album Forever does hit pretty hard.  This show is highlighted with a direct support slot from LA’s Youth Code is worth checking out.  Youth Code has always kind of reminded me of a modern day mix of Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson, without the cheesy factor, and their latest release Commitment To Complications is pretty killer.  Arizona’s Gatecreeper opens the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $12 and $16.
Over at Club Spire on Main, you can get up close and personal with world renowned DJ A-Trak.  He’s been turning heads since he was 15 and a stint as Kanye’s DJ didn’t slow him down by any means.  His sets are known to get people moving and his latest release, last year’s In The Loop: A Decade of Remixes, can definitely get you moving.  The 21 & up show has locals but none mentioned yet with doors at 10 pm and tickets for $20.
  Lizzo. Photo: Atlantic Records/Jabari Jacobs
Thursday you can begin over at Discovery Green for the Super Bowl Live event that kicks off with the hip hop of Houston’s INGRID, who’s latest album from last year, Trill Feels, is pretty hot.  Lizzo will bring her intense and groovy new album Coconut Oil to life afterwards before a set from jazz pianist, Robert Glasper Experiment.  Of course, Solange will close out the night for the all ages and FREE event that gets going around 3:00 pm with extra sets from Children of Pop, Bang Bangz and more on hand.
Over at Mucky Duck, the often laconic voiced sounds of Nashville’s Minton Sparks will swing by to perform.  Adding a spoken word type set full with lush Southern notes, Sparks will make you think while she melts your heart.  Her last release, 2014’s Gold Digger is an album everyone should hear, and her live sets have been acclaimed from coast to coast.  The 21 & up show has doors at 7 pm and tickets between $22 and $25.
Boy Harsher. Photo: Courtesy of Artist/Travis Weitzman
Satellite Bar will host the synth oriented darkwave sounds of Massachusetts’ Boy Harsher.  This two piece dropped a pretty amazing EP in 2014 called Lesser Man, only to drop a full length last year called Yr Body Is Nothing that went darker and harder.  They’re known for an intense live show, and they’re an act you should check out if you’re a fan of the genre.  The dark synthwave sounds of Houston’s Tearful Moon will provide direct support while the always intriguing strangeness of Ak’chamel will go on prior.  Andrew Lee of Lace will perform a solo set as opener for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets for $7.
Fitzgerald’s will have a barn burner when one of the craziest acts you can see, Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers will swing by to perform their blend of blues, Americana, rockabilly, and Southern gothic tunes.  These guys never keep things the same and they even employed Duane Denison of Jesus Lizard at one point.  However, now they’re just a fist pumping four piece with a killer new album called Agridustrial, and their live shows are always like a crazed tent revival set to music.  The throwback tonk of The Delta Bombers will provide direct support while the rockabilly energy of The Brains will go on prior.  The outlaw country of South Texas’ The Barnyard Stompers will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $15 and $20.
Walter’s will have the fun side of Ween, when a set from Dean Ween Group stops in to drop a set.  Ween is the one in the band who plays the more pop oriented songs, and his latest album The Deaner Album from last year feels like a ton of fun from start to finish.  Amandla will provide support for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $20 and $24.
NOTS. Photo: Ground Control Touring/Chad Kamenshine
Rudyard’s has the weird punk of the Memphis based all female four piece, NOTS.  Known for an intense live show and critically acclaimed sounds, their latest album Cosmetic is worth lending an ear to.  Austin’s John Wesley Coleman III will provide direct support while the intriguing dance meets indie rock of Houston’s Keno Sims will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $10 and $13.
Friday things get heated when you can start at Market Square Park for live tunes from Dollie Barnes, Young Girls, and more.  The all ages and 100% FREE event gets going around 11 am and ends around 3.
Catch Fever. Photo: Uncredited/Courtesy of Artist/Facebook
If you really want, you could head back over to Discovery Green and the surrounding area for more of the Super Bowl Live shows.  Robert Ellis, Leon Bridges, The Suspects, and more will all be on hand, as well as performances from Catch Fever, Vodi, -Us. and Wrestlers.  The all ages and FREE event gets going around noon.
Believe it or not, you can steer away from all of that madness and head out to the Woodlands to catch funk legends WAR in the Big Barn at Dosey Doe.  Seriously, these guys wrote the book on funk, they can still bring it when they perform, and hits like “Low Rider,” “Why Can’t We Be Friends?,” and “Spill The Wine” should be more than enough reason for you to head out and catch them while you still can.  Your ticket includes dinner which is served from 6 pm to 7:30 pm for the all ages show with tickets between $98 and $158.
You Blew It! Photo: APA Agency
Walter’s will have a set from Florida emo rockers, You Blew It!.  I hate this band’s name, but contrary to what some think, I dig their sound.  Their 2014 album Keep Doing What You’re Doing got them a larger audience, but their latest Abendrot is where the love should be focused.  The album finds the band incorporating a more adult sound while hanging on to emo core elements from their past, resulting in a record that you should check out.  The indie pop of All Get Out will provide direct support while the emo of Tennessee’s Free Throw will open the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $12 and $17.
If you’d rather get your laugh on, you could attempt to get into one of the two shows at Fitzgerald’s featuring the always funny Hannibal Buress.  Whether you know him from his comedy specials, his time on The Eric Andre Show, or his albums, Buress never disappoints.  The 7 pm show is sold out, but there’s an all ages show with doors at 10 pm  with tickets between $35 and $40.

Kay Weathers will return to town with a set over at Nightingale Room.  While I’m pretty sure that Main street will be a nightmare to navigate, you should still swing by to catch her perform.  A crazy light show and adornments galore, her debut EP Songs For Lucy is pretty amazing.  She’ll have the hyper energized jams of -Us. on prior for the 100% FREE 21 & up show with doors at 7 pm.
If you’d rather steer from music altogether, then you could head to Hardy & Nance Studios for the Cheap Date show.  Over thirty five artists will have art on display, all for a $20 price to take home, and the attached market means that you should definitely swing by to grab some things to decorate your spaces.  There’s more information here for the all ages event that gets going around 7 pm and runs between $3 ad $5.
At Proof Rooftop Lounge, Long Beach rapper and weed aficionado Snoop Dogg will drop by to perform an exclusive set as well as drop a DJ set.  Of course I don’t need to give you the man’s resume, though his latest release Coolaid from last year is worth giving an ear to.  The 21 & up show has a limited number of tickets between $50 and $175 with doors at 8 pm.

Rudyard’s will have a headlining set from Houston’s Slow Future.  Though the band has only been around for a couple of years, they’ve stayed on track with a pretty solid release on last year’s First EP.  That might be enough for people, but the insanity of a set from Jody Seabody & the Whirls will be on as direct support, and as someone who’s caught them multiple times; be prepared to be impressed.  The highly charged fuzzy indie rock of Houston’s A Sundae Drive will be on as  openers for the 21 & up show with doors at 9 pm and a measly $8 cover.
On Saturday you can keep the Super Bowl goodness starting at Market Square Park for an opening set from Dayta, followed by performances from Handsomebeast, El Lago, Vodi and more.  The all ages event gets going around 11 am and it’s 100% FREE.
Over at Discovery Green and the surrounding area, you can get groovy with another day of Super Bowl Live.  A headlining set from Houston legends ZZ Top will be preceded by a performance from Gary Clark Jr as well as one from Houston’s The Suffers.  There’s also sets from Dollie Barnes and more for the all ages and FREE event that gets going around noon.

At Continental Club, you can check out the multiple vocal chorus sounds of The Polyphonic Spree.  The Dallas group lead by Tripping Daisy’s Tim DeLaughter has never disappointed with their mix of trippy pop and multiple vocals, and their live shows are always amazing.  While their last album Yes, It’s True is do for a follow up, their first two releases The Beginning Stages of… and Together We’re Heavy are what they’re known for.  There are also sets from The Phantom Royals, A Fistful of Soul, DJ Mikey and more.  Things get going around noon and it’s 100% FREE.
If you just want to avoid all of the madness around football, then you could swing by The Archway Gallery to see and hear the collaborative effort between Sandy Ewen and her mother Jane Ewen.  Art, music from Sandy’s trio Etched in the Eye to perform will all be on hand alongside gratis beer and more.  The all ages show gets going around 7 pm and it’s 100% FREE.

Vinal Edge will host the Women In Punk Fest featuring art punk, old school death punk and more.  The show, featuring sets from No Love Less, Mel Hell & The Texas Mod Crushers, Screech of Death, Supergrave and Clare, has more information here.  Things get going around 7 pm and the all ages event is 100% FREE.
Later on at Continental Club, the queen of rock n’ roll, Wanda Jackson will swing by to play to a more than likely packed house.  Jackson hasn’t really slowed down from a career that began in the 1950’s.  Realistically, Jackson is reaching that age where this might be one of your last chances to catch her, and her 2011 album The Party Ain’t Over was her kind way of saying she’s not going anywhere. The 21 & up show has doors at 10 pm and tickets for $25.
On Sunday you can finish the Super Bowl Live series with a headlining performance from Houston’s purveyors of Latin ska, Los Skarnales at Discovery Green and the surrounding areas.  I don’t need to oversell these guys, I’ll just say that they’re performers that actually perform while redefining a sound they’ve nurtured since they began.  Grupo Fantasma is also set to perform alongside others with things getting started around 11 am for the 100% FREE all ages event.

Monday, Walter’s will host the unabashed and unadulterated electro pop of Brooklyn’s George Clanton.  Clanton has skewed all over the electronica genre, and while his live sets have always been entertaining, the electro pop world is where he really shines.  Lucky for us, his new album 100% Electronica is as pop as it gets, echoing the likes of OMD and Aha.   The chillwave dreampop of New York’s Negative Gemini will bring plenty of dance grooves on during her set as direct support, while Houston’s XLO will bring a textural nature to the show beforehand.  A DJ set from Children of Pop will make things ultra groovy as openers for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and a $10 cover.
On Tuesday the crew from Bootown will bring another edition of their video clip rewritten series Neo-Benshi back to The Secret Group.  The show, featuring people reworking the script of a video in the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000 is always worth making it out for.  The all ages show has doors at 7 pm and a paltry $5 cover.
If you just want to escape, then you can forget all about the madness of the NFL festivities at Walter’s for their VHS Night.  A double feature of sorts will play, maybe some tape swapping for those who still prefer the bulky film casing, as well as drink specials and more.  The doors are at 8 pm, it’s all ages, and the FREE event has more information here.
That’s about all that’s happening around town this week.  Don’t forget that it’s going to be bonkers, there will be law enforcement everywhere, as well as drunken tourists with the keys to a rental car.  So be mindful, be safe, and use your best judgement for everyone’s sake.

In Which Our Hero Begins His Adventure
Hey guys, like the triangles? I got them from this magical place called the 1990s.
For those of you unfamiliar with what I am doing, I guess I better fill you in. So there’s this guy on the internet who invented the Day Zero Project, or as we call it, a 101 List. It’s a list of 101 goals to be completed in 1,001 days. Whatever you want to accomplish – going sky diving, reading your height in books, trying that thing you wanted to try – but with a deadline on it so you can be motivated to get it done. When I first met Sara, she was in the middle of her second 101 List. And though I hadn’t started dating her yet, I knew that this kind of thing was right up my alley. I started one myself close to the time we started dating, and finished it in the spring of 2016. I’ll send you a link to the guy and the website that got this whole thing started, as well as to Sara’s 101 list blog. If you haven’t started following her yet, well, what’s wrong with you? Get on it!

Anyway, she’s on her third 101 list now, and I started this year happily content with just making ideas for my second 101 list as I spun through the white water rapids of graduate school. I told myself I’d start my next list when I was at least done with classes.
However.
The more I came up with ideas for my list, the more excited I got for them. I sat thinking about what fun I would have trying my hand at getting actually decent at an arcade game for once, only to come back to reality just in time for my professor to say, “And everything I just said is going to be on the test.”
Just kidding. I would never* daydream in class.
Anyway, that’s when I knew I had to get started. If I’m this excited about it, it’s a sign that I should go ahead with it, right? So here we are. You’ll see below you what I plan to accomplish from January 16th 2017 to October 13th 2019. And I’ll be in grad school. So yeah, I guess I’m trying to do everything. Most likely what will happen is you’ll see me checking in with a photo or two on my Instagram when I make baby steps on finishing each goal.
Now don’t worry, go sit back in your seat, put the tomato down. I promise I’ll actually write up something solid when I get an entire goal finished. Pinky promise. Because I am a responsible* adult, I will likely only post about the goals that have to do with school for the first bit, but if you’re lucky, I just may do something interesting now and then. You never know. Anyway, before I ramble on for another four paragraphs…
