Simenon’s romans Américains

Georges Simenon was one of the world’s most prolific and best-selling authors when he was alive and he remains so today. Few of Simenon’s current readers, however, know that he not only lived in the United States for almost ten years but also set over a dozen novels here. But what’s even more surprising is these novels have appeared in English so haphazardly.

Simenon achieved his tremendous output through tremendous discipline. Despite the fact that he moved from place to place almost constantly, he kept to a strict routine of sitting down to his typewriter each morning, and once there, he wrote at a furious rate. A typical novel might take him two to three weeks. There was at least one Maigret a year, plus two to four of the psychological thrillers he called romans durs, plus countless stories. And if these weren’t enough, he also wrote further works under a variety of pseudonyms throughout the first half of his career.

Simenon claimed that living in the United States was a goal he had set himself as a young man, and soon after the war in Europe ended, he applied for visas for himself, his wife Tigy, and their son Marc. They landed in New York City in October 1945. Knowing almost no English, Simenon quickly hired an American agent and put out a request for a bilingual secretary to help him with his correspondence. He met the first application, a French Canadian woman named Denyse Ouimet, for an interview at a restaurant named Brussels near Central Park. As Denyse later told Simenon biographer Pierre Assouline, “I met him at the Brussels at 1:45. I saw him again at the Drake at 4:45. At 7:00 we were making love.”

I looked at Chibs staring at the fire. I bit my lower lip as I saw her tongue wet her lips. I groaned inwardly and looked away.

- Hey - a male voice interrupted my thoughts.

- Hey - I looked at the man - I'm Michael Irby.

He grinned from ear to ear.

- Nice to meet you Michael, my name is Olivia.

- Nice to meet you too.

This evening was really nice and relaxed. We haven't had him for a long time, there was always something going on in the club. The conversation with Michael ended really well. He's a very nice man, he asked me a few things. He wanted to do his best on the show. I explained a few things to him, obviously avoiding topics and details directly related to the club.

- Look - Emillio stood in front of me, phone in hand.

- Come on, Emilio - I breathed.

- I wasn't the one who reported you - he growled - it's the reporting person's phone.

- What ?

- Check for yourself if you don't believe me.

I took the device and looked through it calmly. There were a lot of photos in it, our photos. Pictures of the club, boys, but all these pictures looked like they were taken from the inside. One of the boys from the club seemed to be taking these photos.

- Who's the phone?

- You promise you won't hurt him?

- Emillio, you don't seem to realize what this shit can do to us.

- You know, that's not my problem - he shrugged.

- I'll take you with me - I smiled.

I turned away from everyone, transferred all the photos to the phone. Then I raised the device above my head.

- Sorry - I shouted - does anyone know whose phone it is? Found him on the ground.

I was looking at the people, each of them going through their pockets. I looked at Chibs, who was frowning and nodding slightly.

- Don't - Emillio growled.

- It's probably mine - said the tall brown-eyed man.

I handed the phone back to the man and smiled sweetly.

- Clayton - he held out his hand - Clayton Cardenas." ,

- Olivia - I shook his hand - only Olivia.

- Thank you for finding the phone - he smiled broadly,

- Well no problem.

- I have to keep an eye on him, he laughed, I always lose them.

- Sometimes it does - I shrugged - but you'd better not lose your phones, you never know what an alien might find in them. Have a nice evening, Clayton.

I started towards Chibs, felt a tug on my elbow.

- You better let me go - I looked at Emillio.

- Because what will you do to me?

- I'll put a ball between your eyes before you have time to think about your family. I can take care of them if necessary.

- I don't recognize you, he shook his head. Your father would be disappointed.

- You don't know shit about my father - I pushed him - if you dare to say something about him again, you will regret it.

- Olivia - I heard Chibs snarl.

I looked at him, his brow furrowed as he looked at Emillio.

- I'm going hotel.

I smashed my sweatshirt under the vest and headed for the motorcycle. I heard hurried steps behind me.

- Doll wait, I'm not 20 anymore to chase you - he gasped - What's happening?

- Shit spilled out - I snapped.

- We'll clean them up, but first we need to know what caliber this shit is.

- Of such caliber that this fucking actress has a phone full of our photos.

- We are pretty so he takes pictures of us - Tig grinned - I told you that I am a star.

- Tig for once, be serious. He has my photos when I pick up the containers from the port, he has photos of how we unload them and even when we are taking the goods. Pictures are taken up close, there is no option for an outsider to take them.

- Are you suggesting we have a rat?

- Reste tell yourself, I'm going hotel. I turned and got on the motorcycle.

I glanced at Tig, who was marching towards Chibs in long strides.

This woman was really going to be my death. My personal or club, I stared at her as she spoke to Tigi. I shifted my gaze to Emillio, who was staring at her. I approached him with a bottle of beer.

- Do you want to enlighten me why you pissed off my deputy?

- No - he growled

- Respect me, her and our club, otherwise you'll meet the reaper sooner than you think.

- Are you threatening me? - he frowned.

- Be warned - I patted him on the shoulder - I will not give you a chance to explain if you offend SAMCRO.

He shuddered at my words, Tig took me away from the conversation.

- We have a problem. Chibs.- He grabbed my arm and pulled me to the side. - Olivia says we have a rat at the club.

- Dżizas, so the woman surprises me more and more every moment. She told you more.

- No - he nodded - but she was nervous.

- Stay here with the boys, I'll go find her.

I gave Tig the beer and headed for the hotel. Of course I found her there, she was just packing her things.

- I don't know. You seemed good to me for the position. Jackie boy trusted you 100%, you have proven your dedication to the club many times. But this position clearly overwhelms you.

- You are probably right, but it is a bad sign that you allow unfit people to such a position. And that you are ignoring reports of a rat at the club. Jackson would never do that.

Before I registered what had happened, my fist landed on her face. Her head jumped back to return to its place after a while with a shock in her eyes.

- This is disrespectful - I shook my head - Don't ever mention Jackson like that again. He's gone, he's not in charge of the club.

- Come out - she snapped - I'm going back to Charming.

Pov Olivia

I collapsed onto the bed as Chibs left, closing the door behind him. I pulled out my mobile and called Happie.

- What's up, girl? - he purred into the receiver.

- I need you in the hotel right now, but no one can know.

- 10 minutes and I'm here.

I put the phone on the bed and walked over to the mirror. Dung cut my eyebrow open with his fucked up rings. I put a T-shirt that absorbed blood to my eyebrows, and after exactly 10 minutes Happ appeared at the door of my room.

- Don't ask - I shook my head - Sew this for me.

Happ didn't say a word, just did what I asked him to do.

- I want you to call Marco and ask him if he'll take me to the Nomads.

- Does Chibs know you want to leave Charming?

- He will find out during the vote. Either I leave Charming or I leave Sons. One of the two Happ, I won't be somewhere they don't trust me and are too weak.

Merafong Amapiano wave: EPs to look out for

It goes without saying that one of the most sought out after music genres in the republic right now is Amapiano, a new age Kwaito reincarnation of piano and keys, resting its genius on log drums, dramatic mid song pauses, only to return with mad Kicks and baselines, Amapiano is sure to have you mopping the dance floor with sweat.

Owing its emergence from capital city of Pretoria, the genre has gained prominence throughout South Africa and the world. The lockdown has seen the release of Kabza de Small's chart topping"King of Amapiano" album and joint projects with DJ Maphorisa in Scorpion 1 and 2. At the top of the South African Amapiano throne Kabza and DJ Maphorisa share the throne with the likes of JazziDisciples, Vigro Deep, Gaba Cannal, Tumza D'kota and Seme Tee to name but a few.

But I digress, and narrow the scope to the Merafong City throne, and put the microscope on local talent that should, by no means not go unnoticed.

1. Distance TRK - Amaphupho

Multi-talented producer, singer and songwriter real name Sphamandla Collen Shabalala is a force to reckon with, he refuses to be boxed in any particular genre, he is a all round music artist.

His amapiano track Amaphupho is an absolute fire tune, featuring Brutus pablo on vocals, mixed and Mastered by Kamster SA, it is sure to inspire you and have your ankle tapping, all the while representing Wedela brilliantly. Sitting comfortably on spot number 3 on DJ Sbu's top 10 on radio station Massiv Metro, the song is one of the best to come out of the ville.

His first EP titled "Khuzwayo" was released in 2017 and sold 100 copies in Carletonville. He was nominated under the "New House Artist" category at the Mzansi Kwaito and house Awards (MKHMA) 2019 with the song "Lethukukhanya". Distance is a true genius, not to mention talented.

2. Queller dupour- Bass & 3D logs

Young producer prodigy & vocalist Queller du pour is becoming a household name among Amapiano lovers in Merafong City, his talent is unmatched and he is a true hard worker. His signature one string pull footprint can be traced in other people's work including Amapiano Chronicles and Broken Elements, both whom, feature in this article.

Queller's EP offering "Bass and 3D Logs" is brewing with world class production as far as amapiano is concerned. From the Amapiano remix of "Tigi" a song by Swati Afropop singer Sands, to "Yena" and "Jaiva Yoyo" both the latter tracks feature Amapiano Chronicles, Queller is brilliant and the work ethic shows. If you are a lover of amapiano this 7 track EP is sure to satisfy your crave. What stands out about the 3D log boss is his willingness to work and collaborate with other artists, which shows that teamwork makes the dream work. Queller was currently part of the amapiano Corona tour alongside artists; Jazzidisciples,Mfr Souls, Dj Jaivane, Kabza De Small,KwiishSA, Dinho, Kabza De Small, Dj Stokie,Pencil, Mbali Sebeko and Dimpie Dimpopo. The boy is hot property.

3. Broken Elements- Induku EP

House duo Broken Elements bring a unique distinctive sound to the music scene of Merafong City. Their touch of percussions is literally music to the ears, and is sure to have any Yanos heads doing the pouncing cat.

The EP features cream of the crop vocalists from Merafong, boosting artists such as Mozaique and Kgadi Salane. The EP is ripe with production influences from the likes of BafoDeDeejay and the 3D log boss himself Queller,it couldn't go wrong. From the track Beautiful Butterflies and Mdantso the EP is a banger.

4. Tribal Souls - Goddess EP

Amongst their catalogue,the duo dropped singles "Unleash the King" and "Sounds of the deep", both attesting to their work ethic. Their latest EP "Goddess" drops on the 8th of August.

Whoever says Deep house and tekno influences cannot be fused with amapiano has not looked the direction of ext 3 Khutsong. Tribal souls was formed in 2017 and has been growing since, they categorise their sound as "a combination of deep house and amapiano"

5. Amapiano Chronicles- KhutsongVille EP

Probably the most decorated duo on the list, appearing to have the most following and most relevant in the streets, they boost tracks such as "Kwa Maselwane", the buzzing "Iziyobisi" track and "Mosquito bite" just to name a few. Siyabonga Nkululeko Ndzuzo stage name - Siiyadadeep and Kamogelo Lebethe stage name - Jnr Chronicle are causing serious waves. This is the most anticipated EP as far as amapiano goes in the Ville.

It would be utter disrespect however, not to mention Reason de Friend who has collaborated with the duo on some tracks, and has projects of his own as well, him and Queller has had a influence on this particular sound. All the Yano heads are waiting in nostalgic anticipation for the KhutsongVille EP.

6. Kamster SA - NewBeginnings Ep

Hailing from Carletonville, Wedela House producer Kamster SA real name Kamohelo Monesi, holds no punches back with his upbeat Percussions production. Kamster has been fiddling with afro-house production from as early as 2010, now at the tender age of 21 his sound is ripe with cords to make the soul chant. Already having dropped his single "Umcimbi" his EP is set to drop on the 24th of July, Friday. Definitely cannot wait for the project.

Umcimbi is a hit, best believe.
