so, this is nice to see. like. sometimes it just feels like i’m not accomplishing anything, right
my ao3 wordcount for 2022, as of today:
Tumblr media
that doesn’t include at least 120k of original stuff, if somewhat sleep-deprived memory serves. that doesn’t count the 20k oneshot rotting while i put off finishing the last scene, or the 60k fic that’s just getting started. it doesn’t include ideas i started and pushed aside halfway through.
i hate to risk sounding like i’m bragging but damn. it’s not a lot. it’s not anything, to most people, especially being that it’s free labor.
but that’s half a million words there, easy, and i know all of them are good. i have faith in my competence.
whatever else comes out of this year, i did that much. and i know wren from last november wouldn’t have dreamed of a 500k year, let alone a 500k year i wasn’t even trying to pull. the only person i ever have to impress is my former self, right?

Watty2022 prep convo 2
The first thing I did about that August 19th Watty entry deadline (after drinking a big glass of cold water) , was to access what I had.
Technically, I have 5 books eligible to enter.
One quick tip: whenever I start a book on Wattpad, I add the First Published Date to the Blurb/Summary on that book right as I hit the post button. Like, literally spell it out. It makes it easy to see if the book is eligible for Watty.
Anyhow, two of my eligible books had already been shortlisted last year, so I’m not bothering with them again.
My NaNo project written in a haze last November is very niche with 300 reads or something, so not bothering with it either. Too much work for dubitable gain.
Lone Werewolf has a low chance of success, since it’s  mixed-genre, 170K long and starts off slow despite my best efforts. As far as I can tell, Wattys like ‘em clear-cut genre, fast-starting and… well, not over 100K. There’re always exceptions, I invested heavily into this project and I have everything ready to go for it (summary, logline) from last year when I didn’t enter it (was expanding it, because I didn’t like the ending). So… will enter it, but won’t do anything extra for it.
Now, Raised by the Mafia, my last eligible book… this one can use some work (an understatement of the year!) and it needs all the trimmings.
State tuned to see my process and tell me about yours!
Who the heck am I? Mom, wife, cat-lover, totally rational scientist, gardener, Watty 2020 winner, Watty 2021 shortlisted… and always--a dreamer.

10 Ways to Successfully Use Influencer Marketing by Julian Shapiro
Influencer marketing is expected to hit $13.8B in 2021, according to a recent report. This is an increase from $9.7B in 2020. With companies large and small seeing major returns from influencer campaigns, here's a cheat sheet for founders on successfully utilizing influencer marketing.
1. Seek relationships with fast-growing influencers: They'll likely charge less than inflated, slower-growth accounts, and they’ll get you in front of their rapidly growing audiences.
2. Work with creators, not "influencers:" Creators are craftspeople. They are writers, photographers, artists, etc. They put more value into the content they create than legacy social media celebrities do.
Simply put, they care more about the quality of their craft than their follower count, which can mean more engagement and commerce.
3. Seek long-term relationships over one-off campaigns: Brands that are repeatedly shown to an influencer's loyal following build deeper affinity over time.
Find influencers who want to be a true representative of your brand. This leads to more consumer trust in the long run.
4. Start with nano- and micro-influencers: Most startups should start with nano- or micro-influencers rather than macro-influencers. What's the difference?
Nano: ~10k followers or less
Micro: ~10-100k
Macro: 100k+
As influencers grow, their audiences become more diverse. When this occurs, it's harder to deliver personalized messages, which causes a decline in engagement and conversion.
Influencers with smaller followings are more accessible and trusted than their celebrity counterparts. You’ll also get better targeting (higher conversion) for a lower fee since they have less reach.
5. Create campaigns aligned with your influencers' values: Brands that win with influencer marketing have figured out that they get a higher ROI when they create campaigns that make their influencers feel like they're promoting themselves. Here's how:
Start small: Run giveaways with your influencers. Let them provide value (free product) to their audiences.
Then scale: Create products with your best, long-term influencers. They're brand ambassadors. Run a collaboration. Get them to invest in your brand.
6. Offer creative control: Rather than providing word-for-word scripts, give influencers creative control over content.
Why?
The content needs to be authentic.
The influencer knows what resonates with their audience. Their creativity and perspective can mean a better chance of going viral and getting good engagement.
7. Use a hybrid pricing model: Brands are tired of wasting money on campaigns that lack a clear return, so some are moving away from paying lump sums for creator posts.
Instead, they compensate influencers based on the conversions they drive (like an affiliate model).
It doesn't have to be one or the other, though. Try a hybrid approach:
Pay some money upfront for the creator's content.
Then, also pay a percentage of each sale that comes in through their affiliate link.
This can lead to long-term, win/win influencer partnerships.
8. Influencer marketing = designing a community: You’re working with humans, not dashboards.
Each influencer is a relationship. Put in the work to find the right influencers. Once you find great long-term influencer partners, incentivize them to activate other great influencers.
Here's how:
Create a referral system for them to sign up other influencers.
Give them a percentage of sales generated by influencers they activate.
9. Know when to gift: Gifting = sending influencers products for free.
This often works best for nano-influencers who usually aren't "full-time" influencers. If they like your product, ask them to post about it.
Brands get low-cost exposure since their cost is inventory (not cash).
10. Use a survey to improve attribution: Attribution is notoriously difficult in influencer marketing.
You can try to see how much traffic/sales come in through influencers' URL or discount codes. But this doesn’t always tell the whole story. People may hear about you from an influencer but decide to purchase later.
The workaround?
Add a post-purchase attribution survey. Figure out how many people first heard about you from an influencer.
Tumblr media
Do you work with influencers? What are some of your best tips on building relationships with the right people to represent your brand?

We reached our Camp Nanowrimo goal!
Tumblr media
@decantae and I have decided to participate in Camp Nano with a 25k goal, and we just hit it today on July 11th, 2020!
We actually just came off of writing 50k in June as detailed in this particular post in the sprint of reaching 100k on our project, so I was fully expecting July to slow down a bit in the aftermath of reaching that milestone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We hit 100k on our project on July 3rd (and wrote 50k from June 3rd - July 3rd), and you can really see that push in the 5k word count in the first few days of the month. Then we settled into an average of roughly 2k-ish in the past week or so with a couple of dips.
Our writing hasn’t been as smooth as it has been in the past with a couple more stumbles and with the aforementioned lower word counts on a few days that sometimes felt ridiculously slow, but it’s remained extremely fun. I’m still thinking about writing all day, and counting down the seconds until the next opportunity to write.
(That being said, I feel like my writing quality has been suffering and stagnating quite a bit recently so it’s been a bit harder for me to write, but that’s a discussion for a different post).
As someone who never wrote consistently or stuck with Nano for more than three days, writing every day has been such an accomplishment in it of itself — actually meeting a Camp Nano goal was legitimately unthinkable earlier in this year.
I don’t know what else to say to be completely honest, so please take this heartfelt keysmash as a conclusion:
lkjadfsncdalaskjcnadkfcnald.kjcm
aj;dkfhclajkdscnaldcnaldjkfha;cdmakdcmnadljkn
Best of luck to everyone who is participating!

DtD News Nov 2020
Thank you to anyone who came back for this nonsense. For brevity I have an announcement that I want to make up front. I didn't have room for it last month so I pushed it back, but I can't anymore. I had to make one major revision to the published story. I want people to know about it.
This is the TLDR version. I tell a more in-depth story at the end.
ANNOUNCEMENT
The summary: I had a bad outline walking into writing Mistrust Goes Both Ways. I ran into a problem mid-story. Instead of stopping and taking the time I needed, I challenged myself to creatively solve my way out of my problems. I re-started with about half of what I'd written, published Mistrust Goes Both Ways, and restarting my outline with high hopes.  I was proud of myself for rising to the challenge.
Despite my best efforts, it didn't work out. In the end, I had to scrap my outline. I was able to structure the end I was going for and spent the end of 2019 trying to link the first two stories to the ending I wanted. It wasn't working. Then TRoS. Then COVID. Here we are. In June, I started experimenting with scrapping Mistrust and restarting from Read Between.
Mistrust Goes Both Ways will not be part of the finished story when I'm done. I know some of you love it. I love it. I have no intention of taking it down. I might, for a short time, when I'm posting the final story. I'll let you know if that happens and it will go back up afterward. I don't have specifics as there's no point planning for it now.
For right now, nothing is changing on my AO3 account. Feel free to read and comment to your hearts content. I promise it will stay up forever to remind me that some mistakes are worth sharing with others. I learned good lessons from this mistake. It stays.
That being said I think I owe you an actual update on the progress of this story.
WHAT THE HELL I DID THIS MONTH
After my first update I needed to re-integrate with Reylo friends. Funnily enough, that pulled me into another fic. I've been working on that between following this election. Now that it's called I can get back to writing. I tried a couple of times since I voted on Oct 30th, but I knew it wasn't what I wanted to be thinking about.
Thankfully, I've also begun doing more social/political essays lately. I'm not sure what overall form or shape those may take and I haven't published any. Still, I was creative and I did plenty of writing. Interestingly, all this political focus is good for Deceive the Deceiver. Spinning and listening to conspiracy theories is a big part of weaving a world like this one. A great deal comes from my thoughts and perceptions of the real world.
WHERE DTD IS
As of right now I am in the process of first drafting the entire story with Read Between as the starting point. That is, every one of the short stories in the series. What I'm doing is somewhere between a history, an outline and random scene writing. All of these elements are currently strung together in one long, continuous, chronological, first draft. It's everything from the history before Read Between (which starts in the 1930's), all the way to the final scene of DtD.
I'm taking all the good ideas I've created in the last couple of years and re-organizing them into a first pass. It's the skeleton and some of the meat now. I'm slowly building out now that I have a blank-er slate. It's about choosing what works and what doesn't.
I call it accordion writing. It just gets bigger and bigger. This outline will later level up into the first full story drafts for each part. I've got so much history when I finish this I might… I'm getting ahead of myself. Don't want to give too many clues away.
Another interesting thing that's happened recently is I've started pulling bits of other fic ideas that I’m just not gonna finish. A big chuck of the history I stole from a modern/academia AU where Ben and Rey are history students specializing in the ancient Jedi religion. Another was a complication between characters came from a canon story where I wanted to paint the relationship with a new layer. We'll see if I can pull that off.
I spent a lot of time prior to this year focusing on the heroes but my villains hadn't gotten much love. Filling in the history has given me a chance to flesh out the villains. All their moves and countermoves, woven through the bits I already have, are spinning a pretty tapestry. Oh, the villains are so much fun to write!
This other fic came together in the same sort of accordion fashion and it's been fun working through the kinks in the process now that I've seen some of the weak points on a scale like DtD. I think I've mentioned, but this is a writing experiment for me and I'm most invested now in improving my process and clue-threading with DtD. This other fic is helping me test it on a smaller scale.
Not that this needs to get any longer, I'm just going to throw pretense out the window and go with complete vanity. If you don't give a wet shit about my life (and I don't blame you) you have reached the end of your journey. I hope to see you next month. If not, then I leave you with this parting:
May we meet again in our next fandom, through mutes and not as rival shippers.
The following is the ridiculous story of my ups and downs with Deceive the Deceiver. I figure if I explain to you how much I'm invested in this story some of you will stop worrying that I'm going to abandon it. Trust me. I'm not.
This tale stretches from NANOWRIMO 2018 and the prompt that started it, through the ups and downs of 2019 and 2020, to the writing of last month's letter. Buckle up. I love bumpy rides.
DtD: from NANO '17 to COVID-19
This story truly starts in December 2017 when I drenched the seat beneath me during Last Jedi. I'm a TLJ shipper. I got caught on the thirst train. It hit a time when writing was becoming a really big part of my life. I've been writing since I was a kid. I stopped for a while and came back to it. It's a long story. Ultimately, I'd started writing a lot a few years earlier. A mix of fic and originals but I was running into problems so I start reading a bunch of books to get better. TLJ lit the fires. NO joke TLJ came out on the 15th. I have pages of writing from the 20th.
2018 was Reylo year! I was already on Tumblr for my previous fandom (Batman comics). I found Reylo AU week which is in August. I submitted a story for that. It was the first fic I published for Reylo. Fast-forward August to November. I'm in the Writing Den on Discord and someone throws out this spy prompt. People start running with. Throwing ideas around. One of those was the snuggie in Mistrust! I have that conversation saved and story spots for each crazy thing they threw out. Finally, I said I'd do it!
Mind you, this is November 2nd. Nano has just started and the event is about "turning off your internal editor." This prompt consumed me. I was trying to keep up with SpaceWaffleHouseTM that first year. I did, btw. We both crested 100,000. It was my first Nano. Word count is not my problem. Organizing my crazy ambitious ideas is my problem. Some of that 100k was other stories, like Custard which I wrote half of in November and the other half Jan/Feb 2019. Most of it… probably 80k of it… was DtD.
Read Between the Lies is currently 33,710. I wrote at least 20k of that during that first Nano, as well as outlines and scenes for what I thought would be the starting point. I remember wanting to write Read Between to "get into their headspace" by writing their first meeting. I didn't think it would become a whole story. I was just going with it then. Any idea that came to mind.
I took December 2019 off for a few reasons. Some personal. Some burnout. I'm one of those people that can use writing to relieve stress, but I was so exhausted from that month-long writing sprint. By the last week I was dragging to get the final four or five thousand words to hit 100k.
Also, what I had by the end (no internal editor) was a bird nest of ideas that had too many beginnings, not enough middles, and endings to go around. I knew one thing right away: I knew I had more than one story. There were so many fun ideas. I figured, what the hell. I knew another thing right away: the prompt was at the end of the story. Like, the very end. Like, the last short story. Or the second to last short story, at the earliest. That hasn't changed. Ever. That's just where it ended up.
Between January and April of 2019 I touched DtD a few times. I kept coming back to it, reading through it, trying to untangle it. I made new notes on the stories. Expanded ideas. Tried to structure it. I figured out a bunch of good notes, but no real substance. The hardest thing was figuring out where to start! Did I:
(1) Start shortly before the prompt with Ben/Rey's relationship established and fill the story with the history?
(2) Start a lot earlier and build Ben/Rey's relationship from the beginning I'd written in Read Between?
If I'm being honest, Read Between was a lot better than I thought it would be and I didn't want to get rid of it. For a while I was thinking of publishing it last as a "prequel" if people liked the series.
Funny enough, the turning point happened May fourth weekend 2019…
In the week leading up, I was struggling through another story and decided to take a break for the weekend. I'd start writing again on Sunday when I met with my writing group. I met them through Nano. We used to meet at Panera. Now they meet on Discord. They mostly sprint though and I'm not a sprinter. I miss Panera. Anyway.
May 4th was a Sunday (look it up). I gave myself a writing break for the weekend and marathoned Star fucking Wars. It was nerd weekend. I was going to nerd out. I wore exclusively SW gear all weekend. I remember it well. It was the start of something fucking magical in my life.
Have I mentioned recently I really love this story. Trust me I will fucking finish it. Oh my god the demons won't leave until I do. Get them out of my head…
I had a pretty rockstar weekend. I believe the reason I skipped the PT that weekend was because I'd watched it the month before or so. Right after finishing the Clone Wars animated series (which is awesome and I strongly recommend both it and Rebels). I skipped them and SOLO.
Starting with R1, I went through in chronological order. I stopped at RotJ. I was with my family on Saturday and they were playing RotJ in the living room during the party. We talked about my marathon. My mom came over to my apartment after. We watched RoTJ properly. Then Force Awakens. It was too late by then to watch TLJ. I know I went straight to bed after my mom left on Saturday night.
Somewhere during or right after TFA I started thinking about Deceive the Deceiver. I don't remember what sparked it. I went to bed thinking about DtD. I know this with 100% certainty because I woke up thinking about again on Sunday and I thought it was quite odd.
I dream about this story in a way I have only dreamt about a precious few. Technicolor folks. It keeps me up at night.
I went to my writing group with (a) no plan for what to write, (b) a gordian knot that I had yet to untangle, (c) a sudden urge to re-read it. I opened my notes and read DtD through all our sprints. I read most of it during that writing session. We go about three hours.
That night I had Game of Thrones at my parent's. It was the (spoiler alert) episode where Arya kills the Night King. I remember because two minutes into the episode my brother's car broken down a few blocks from our apartment and we had to go help him. Derailed the whole night (this is foreshadowing).
Side note: I live with my younger brother and he's the best roommate I've ever had in my 35 years of life. Love you, Mo!
The episode was recording so we ran out. Had to leave the car in a parking lot. Someone had already helped him push it out of a puddle but my brother was soaked to mid-calf and the engine was shot. We dropped him off at home and I rode back to my Momma's crib to watch GoT. It was only the beginning of a wild night.
I went to bed late. I had to get up a few hours early to deal with the car before work started for either of us. I guess we were both hoping to avoid taking the day off. That wasn't going to happen. I drove home but I couldn't sleep. That crazy episode and the fact that my brain was already on fire with DtD.
I spent the wee hours finishing my re-read through the rough draft of Read Between the Lies. It saw my starting place. I started writing. I wrote through waiting in a parking lot, for the tow truck, in my car, at 6 am, with no sleep. I did a voice recording as I drove from the parking lot to the mechanic where the driver was taking my brother's car. I thought about it the whole way back. I sat on the sofa a wrote some more when we got home. I went to bed at 11 am and I'd written 10k more words for Read Between the Lies.
Somewhere between the chaos of May 5th and the official publish date on June 5th, Read Between got written. I know it didn't take too long. I remember sending it off to beta (by my amazing beta team on 1 & 2: Em, Jen, and Sai) and immediately pivoting to my outline. I slapped that together far too hastily and kept moving. I was going on holiday in the UK (I'm American and I'm ashamed) in early August so I planned on trying to publish Part 2 when I got back. At the very least I wanted it ready for beta.
Also some to admit, around the middle of 2019 I was fatigued with the fandom. We were hitting a lull. I was psyching myself up for the end and the exit. I was trying to clean house. I wanted to push out unfinished fics. To make them work. There was a lot of that mood from me in 2019. I was trying to make everything work. It's why Read Between came out, and that was a good thing. It's also why Mistrust came out, and that was a bad thing.
With that mentality looming, tough outline in hand, I started writing Mistrust before the end of May. I hit my snag sometime during the period I was publishing Read Between because by the time it was all done I knew I wasn't going to have a finished story by the time I left for London. I would figure it out when I got back. I picked up another project to distracted me from my problems for a little while. That is going to be an original if it's anything. One day…
At some point after I got back I started focusing heavily on problem solving. I had two stories already and a number of plot threads I had to resolve. I have heavy, heavy, heavy notes from September to December of 2019. Lots of possible ways to run this story. It sucks that a lot of that stuff isn't going to make it, but I'm recycling shit every day and I learned so much about the characters/story in that four month period. It really shaped the finished product in an important way.
This period is where I started to look at the bigger structure and how I was going to solve specific plot problems in each short story to bring the whole together. That focus on the different parts is important because it was the last thing on my mind when TRoS happened.
December 20th (the release date) is my birthday. My ass drove up to one of those Reylo-only screenings and I was surrounded by amazing people as I watched a movie that ruined my 35th birthday. Thankfully, I spent it in incomparable company. Thank you to all the hosts and super special thanks to Jen. Not only was she a DtD beta on both, she invited me. Thank you love! You are the reason I still remember that trip with joy.
Side note: I no longer hate TRoS. I've made my peace with it. I'm a far happier person now.
Needless to say, the only Reyloing I did in January of this year was venting frustration. Then I took a few weeks away from the fandom. I'd done my purging into the void. I knew other people still needed the space to vent but I had to get away. Once the toxin is out I couldn't let it back in.
What occurred starting in February of 2020 was a series of situations in which, every time I logged into Twitter I was faced with the kind of vitriol in the fandom that I don't need in my life. Some of it was still TRoS stuff, even as late as May. I'm not judging, I'm just saying, with the world on fire (literally), I didn't need it.
I don't think I have to explain why I've avoided social media like the plague since early this year. I live in America. If you heard anything about our recent President I don't have to explain any further what this year has been like. That has been par for course all over the world.
So here's my secret to happiness. I don't fux with the trolls. Do not engage. Sometimes that means radio silence. I'm breaking that silence because I want you to know 2020 has not destroyed DtD. It's only leveled shit up.
I have pretty much been working on this story consistently since March of this year. I go back and forth with reading, history, documentaries. I'm learning to wield many new weapons. They take time to settle in. DtD is the de-stressor I go to in between the real shit.
Sometime in June I was screwing around with the order of the parts. I had worked out the end but I was trying to bridge the gap between the ending I was certain I needed to get to and the two beginning stories I'd already published. I couldn't bridge the gap. It had been a year since I published Read Between and it wasn't working. Then I had an epiphany.
What if I got rid of Mistrust? Read Between is a pretty blank slate. I didn't want to re-write it and I still don't. I have no intention of getting rid of Part 1. I may clean it up and add some stuff at the very last minute, but it will be right before the new stuff drops as a pre-cursor to the flood of subsequent stories. I may add a few new clues or alter a scene or two, but I have plenty of room to move with it exactly the way it is.
What does that mean for Mistrust Goes Both Ways? To make a long story short, there was no good way for me to continue with what I'd published and still write the story in my head. I'm sure there are cool places to take the existing story, but that's not what I'm trying to do. In truth, I should have left 1 and not published 2 when I hit a snag. Lesson learned.
In June I basically threw Mistrust out and asked myself, "Now what?" I have months of great ideas rife for reshuffling and no restrictions on how to bridge the gap from 1 to the ending I wanted. But the end had shifted.
That brings us up to speed. The last thing I did before taking a much needed break was get through 90% of the history in my accordion outline/draft. I poured the foundation that was missing. I walked away in early October and let it set. I'm going to button up this other fic I'm working on and then go back to DtD and check the foundation I laid.
I'm very confident that not only will it hold, but that with fresh eyes and the fun side stories I've had the chance to lay to rest, I will finally be able to start building the finished products on top of it.
IN CONCLUSION
I'm still as excited as I've ever been for this story. It frustrates me all the time, but that means the medicine for my soul is working its magic. Change it painful, but pain is transformative. I've embrace changed. That ache is just a sign the muscles are getting stronger. Growing pains. As I learn to live with them in my family, my country, and my job, I find that life's lesson's often end up reflecting in every place in our life if we but open our eyes to look.
Growing pains exist in my writing process too. They are as transformative in this corner of my life as they are in every other. They have revealed as much about me as a person in my writing as they have in my politics. They have taught me how to compromise with my family as I learn to compromise with my characters. As I consider how people treat each other I am reminded that struggles in understanding our fictional counterparts may shine a light on our struggles to understand our truer selves.
Take care of yourselves. Once you've got that covered, if you can, take care of each other. Feel free to poke me and say hi. If not, until next month.
Fari.

State Of The Author :: March/April 2020
I have been insanely productive. Especially this month. I not only aced Camp NaNo, but I got the first essay of my Master's degree submitted on time. I AM AWESOME.
Works In Progress:
Black Holes And Revelations: chapters 9 through 12 finished, chapter 13 started, and 17,530 words written - new total 54,079. My goal for this fic is 100K but I'm starting to think I'll end up exceeding that word count.
Camp NaNoWriMo: my original goal was 10K. I reached that in just over a week, and increased it to 20K. Hit that goal last Thursday. :D Final Camp word count is 20,042 words - what I wrote for Black Holes And Revelations, plus my essay and reference list for said essay.

2019 Writing Wrap-Up
I typically do this on my main rather than here because I always forget this exists, but not this year!
Another year where I didn’t end up sharing a single thing I wrote in its entirety so I’m sticking with my trend there lmao. Good to know that some things never change. But I have taken the first steps towards that - namely, starting this blog to give myself a place to talk more about writing.
Now, onto the stats!
Total for 2019: 104,374 words!
I actually wasn’t expecting to even near the 100K mark this year, so the fact that I passed it was a pleasant surprise. It’s significantly less than I hit in 2018 (over 170K), but I’m still very proud of what I accomplished throughout the year.
My focus over 2019 was based a little less in silly concept story ideas (which I still love dearly and want to do more of this next year) but I tried to focus a little more in diversity. In the types of stories, the characters in them, and how they were written. I did my best to push my boundaries with it, which often led to taking longer with my writing and probably is one of the reasons the word count of the year wasn’t as high as last year. But I felt it was important for me, and I’m glad that I worked on what I did.
The longest piece I wrote was my WIP NaNo novel, Castle on the Hill, which hit 57,037 words. I’m hoping to work a little more on it in 2020 and maybe finish up a first draft over the summer, when I have a little more time.
With that, here are some of the highlights:
~~
“They say the British are starting to listen to our people there! That they might consider changing some of the voting laws!” He preaches with the pride of a man who has always believed in the good of the British, but it is confusing to hear him speak like this.
Wasn’t it only months ago when his father spoke of the evils of the British invaders? Of the unforgivable things they’d done? How is it that, now, he draws his own family closer to the center of their spiderweb?
(A Wanderer on a Scorched Path)
~~
That night in the motel had turned into a week, which turned into a month, and so on until all Laine’s memories of her early childhood involved Do Not Disturb signs and vending machine dinners.
(A Walk Down Memory Laine)
~~
In hearing of her success, the townsfolk quietly cheered for her, disregarding their previous contempt for the malicious girl who’d tormented them. She was all at once one of theirs. Hadn’t they laughed with her, waved at her, made faces at the small girl who had seemed so unlike her family? And perhaps all of their attempts at kindness were being paid off. Finally, here was a Grey who would break the curse of her cruel family and be a decent sort.
(The Grey Manor)
~~
A familiar coach split the crowd, curtains drawn over the windows. It was almost easy to believe that the Greys were inside, eager – if Greys could be eager – about reuniting with their youngest. But there was only one Lady Grey left.
(The Grey Manor)
~~
It was during one of these heavy snowstorms that the Visitor arrived in town. None could claim to know where she came from, and fewer still knew her name. Even the details of her appearance never quite matched up – some said she was an old woman, with hair like straw and wearing rags better fit for carrying potatoes than being worn. Other claimed she was no older than thirty, that the apparent age was only due to her gravelly voice and wild, fair hair. They said that though her clothes were faded and tattered and too large on her tiny frame, one could still see the frayed ruffles and faint design of what once must have been a fine gown.
(The Grey Manor)
~~
Years had passed since the doctor’s apprentice had last been to the Grey Manor. He’d been one of many who had taken a thrill at the abandoned house while Lady Grey had been away. He now considered himself above such superstitions. Yet the effect of the snow-covered cemetery and the sprawling, leafless ivy across the outer walls could not be blamed wholly on the overcast sky.
(The Grey Manor)
~~
The doctor’s apprentice made his way deeper into the house, but the Grey Manor felt more fit for ghosts than the living.
(The Grey Manor)
~~
“Good afternoon, Clara!” I greeted as I waved for her to take a seat before my desk.
“Doctor,” she responded in kind. She pulled back the chair and fell into it in one fluid motion. “Things are on the up-and-up!”
As much as I appreciated her enthusiasm, having supervillain clients typically meant having to gently discourage their flavor of ‘on the up-and-up’.
(The Desk of Dr. Isselhardt)
~~
“I think I’ll start off with a vacation. I was initially thinking of revisiting the city I grew up in, but finding a kennel for my hellhounds would be a nightmare, and I just know none of my friends would take them in.”
I had met Jekyll and Hyde once, when I’d bumped into Clara on my morning jog in the park, and I couldn’t blame them.
(The Desk of Dr. Isselhardt)
~~
The angelic child screamed like a demon, yet Camila adored her more than she’d known she was able.
(Quinta and Her Cat)
~~
Amara leaned back against the door, staring at the ceiling. “Your Guardians don’t seem as sympathetic as you make them out to be.”
Deirdre kicked out her foot, but only caught the edge of some piping. “They have to choose their battles. They’re strong, but not so strong as to fight all of them.”
“Legal skirmishes between the elite is apparently a higher priority than the oppression of thousands,” was Amara’s reply.
Deirdre didn’t respond; she had nothing more to say.
(The Great Guardians)
~~
One of the aliens is moving quickly towards me, and I realize my impression that they are humanoid was a little premature. Though its head, neck, and torso are vaguely like mine, the bottom half of their bodies are more like a spider. A gray, spider centaur. With no face.
A small part of my brain asks why I'm not terrified. I have no answer for it.
(Alien Abduction)
~~
Sir Michel had been in Eastcairn Keep only once before, but the imposing walls of stone were as familiar as if he had grown up here. The halls were cold and impersonal, as though acknowledging that they'd been around long before Sir Michel had arrived and they would stand the same long after he was gone.
(Foul Play)
~~
"I have a sister." Andromeda's voice was soft, but it carried as though all of the forest had quieted to listen. "The kingdom is in no great danger of losing an heir."
Sir Michel chuckled at her naivety. "Princess, if you believe that your father will allow for this - "
"Then let him come to tell me himself."
Never before had Sir Michel been interrupted by a woman. His laughter caught in his throat, and, for a moment, he was too stunned by Andromeda's audacity to respond.
(Foul Play)
~~
"The King is busy running a country, as one day your future husband shall."
"And I suppose you think that by carrying me back to the Keep, you'll be given the position?" Andromeda asked bitterly. She brushed a loose braid behind her shoulder. "You, a man with nothing but a meager title, sitting on the throne? No one with sense could expect such a fate for you, yet here you are."
"Yet here I am," was the knight's weak response. He couldn't understand how it was that he spoke far louder than the princess, and yet his words didn't seem to carry half as well or ring half as true.
(Foul Play)
~~
"One of your men killed Tihomil, but not you. The trial is not fair."
"We don't fight fair when it comes to your life."
(Foul Play)
~~
Andromeda pushed herself away, pulling her dagger with her. When she lifted a part of her skirt, Sir Michel saw that it was strapped to her leg, a place no honorable man would've thought to check. When she bent down again, her face was no more than a foot from the knight's.
"I don't fight fair when it comes to my life," Andromeda hissed. She wiped the blood staining her hands onto Sir Michel's breastplate, trailing red across its center.
(Foul Play)
~~
As his vision began to tunnel, Sir Michel the Righteous' last sight was that of the princess stealing off into the night, her movements as feral and graceful as something too wild to be contained in the Keep.
(Foul Play)
~~
Josef Weber was a quiet and privileged man, and the two together gave him the appearance of being far prouder than he actually was. This view was encouraged by the fact that he surrounded himself with few friends, and that those he kept were similar in stature and wealth to himself.
(Castle on the Hill)
~~
The night sky was illuminated by fireworks, casting a scarlet glow over the small, German city of Heidelberg. Its castle stood imposingly atop a hill, awash in the red, mimicking fires that had taken the structure from what it had once been to the ruins that now overlooked Old Downtown. Crowds of thousands had flooded the streets, watching the annual celebration in awe as the fireworks reflected in the Neckar River below.
(Castle on the Hill)
~~
“Shouldn’t you be running back to Hulmarra? I thought you were loyal to your lady.”
Theren’s laugh was abrupt and loud, but when he stopped, his voice was coldly stern. “We’re loyal to two things. Gold and discretion. It just so happens Lady Iltazyara is well equipped with both.”
Verna smirked. “Only those two things? If I paid you to kill your sister, would you do it?”
“That price would cost far more than you have,” Theren said with a condescending smile.
“You’d be surprised how much I have at my disposal,” Verna taunted.
“Then we can talk later.” Theren winked in her direction and grinned broadly at the impatient look on Rowan’s face.

roosh v forum, how to make money with bitcoin
Cryptocurrencies are big company as well as investors are pouring into the space. The most up to date example is the $400 million investment made by MicroStrategy in Bitcoin. Those capitalists have a lot of cash to play with and will be eager to see if the crypto money market remains to grow. The new wave of institutional financiers is expected to make a great deal of money, as well as they might have the ability to get associated with bitcoin also. In October, the cost of Bitcoin was nearly $68,000. However it was less than $30,000 in November. If the price had actually quadrupled, the cryptocurrency would be worth $116,000 - greater than increase its current price. The cryptocurrency market is currently valued at $29,000. If it quadrupled in value, it would be worth more than $116,000! Nevertheless, some experts see problems ahead. If the rise in value of Bitcoin was not quit, the rate of Bitcoin can experience a parabolic rally. Will 2021 be also bigger for Bitcoin? A current report from Morpher asserts that a halving cycle will certainly make bitcoin worth a minimum of $160,000 by the end of 2021. This is a large forecast, and it isn't the only one. With the decentralized nature of the cryptocurrency market, a halving cycle will certainly occur in the future. Nonetheless, the next huge wave will strike the crypto globe in 2020. how to send bitcoin from coinbase to ledger nano s following halvening will certainly happen in 2020 and will see the possession triple in value, making it the like it was in 2017. However will 2021 be also bigger? Fundstrat's Tom Lee states the money will certainly reach $116,000 by 2021. While the current cost of the virtual money is big, it will double once more in 2020. In spite of these aspects, he believes that the cost of the crypto will certainly climb 300% by the end of the year. Will 2021 be even bigger for Bitcoin? This year, the cryptocurrency is expected to get to $20,000. The rate has risen to almost double in the past year, and also this year has actually been simply the beginning of a boom. As the crypto currency, this will likewise aid the sector gain even more money. The worth of the currency will be multiplied in the future. The price of the digital coin will maintain expanding exponentially. Will 2021 be also larger for Bitcoin? A few major gamers have recently announced their wish for a $100k market cap in the currency. But if these assumptions are met, it will certainly be substantial in the short run. In 2021, it will depend on $50k for the electronic money. However, the rate of the cryptocurrency will drop to $5k by the end of the year. If the market remains to increase, it will get to a market cap of $1 trillion in the future. According to a panel of 50 crypto professionals, the rates of bitcoin might reach $100,000 by 2021. As a matter of fact, the international cryptocurrency market is expected to hit $100 billion by the end of 2021, but there are no unalterable forecasts. However, the rate will likely continue to fall. The market will certainly keep on raising. If it does, after that it will certainly be one of the most costly for the following few years. Will 2021 be even larger for Bitcoin? It seems so. The digital currency has actually experienced a parabolic arrangement in the past year as well as will possibly be also bigger in the coming years. While the marketplace is already huge for Bitcoin, the rate of the digital money might increase or even three-way. It will certainly be worth greater than $1 million by the end of 2021. With these 2 aspects incorporated, it is very easy to see that the cost of Bitcoin is likely to reach a billion bucks by the end of this years. The present year, 2021 will certainly be even bigger than last year, yet it will certainly be also bigger than that. The Bitcoin price has actually been up 27.3% considering that the beginning of the year. Regardless of the cost boost, the marketplace will remain to increase. If the prices of various other digital assets fall, then it will be also larger for Bitcoin. However, in the future, will 2021 be a trillion dollar rally in the crypto world?

Camp Nano July 2020: Summary
Goal: 25,000 words
Won on: July 12th, 2020
Final Word Count: 63,333 words
Average Word Count: 2,043 words per day
Lowest Word Count: 829 words on July 7th
Highest Word Count: 4,574 words on July 2nd
Tumblr media Tumblr media
okay that final word count number is so satisfying though???
@decantae and I decided to try our hand at Camp Nano this month with extremely low expectations. I’m so excited to announce that not only did we win, we wrote 253% of our goal!
We were actually coming off of writing 50k in June as detailed in this post here. When we decided to attempt our hand at Camp Nano, we decided to set a deliberately low goal for us in comparison because we were both convinced that after our success and push towards hitting 100k on our project in June, our word count would falter, and we didn’t want to push ourselves into burning out.
We hit our goal on July 12th. Seeing as it was a little less than halfway through the month, we did readjust our goal (not on the website, just on a personal level) to 50k while still keeping our expectations low — we wanted to keep our writing journey fun and not an obligation. The moment it became a chore, I’m sure we would’ve stopped writing.
Honestly, I did expect us to hit 50k based off of our performance and consistency since we started writing this project in April. Exceeding that goal by 13k however was something that I never even imagined. This is by far the most we’ve ever written in a single month!
Incredibly, as I’ve detailed in the two posts linked above, it has continued to be a relatively painless journey. Although there are some parts that I can feel are dragging or are a bit difficult, it was nothing that we couldn’t force our way past. It’s been such a joy to be able to write every single day with my best friend, just so I can read and reread everything we wrote and be extremely proud of what we’ve done.
In some ways, it’s easier to tackle a huge word count with a writing partner because we’re effectively halving that burden by sharing it. In other ways however, it can be so much harder because it requires both people to be pulling each other along, to be contributing, to be on the same page, to put equal amounts of labor and effort into it — with just one of those things missing, collaborative writing can screech to a halt. Somehow, decantae and I have managed to figure out something that worked for the both of us, and the payoff has been such a fantastic rush.
This has been the first Nano-related event that I’ve taken part in that hasn’t ended in me giving up on it one week in. As someone who has never been able to write for more than three days straight, this is a huge accomplishment and I am so, so proud of myself and so grateful for my writing partner.
Congratulations to all the other Camp Nano participants — whether you won or didn’t win, you all did absolutely fantastic! (And if you didn’t participate, I hope you had a wonderful month of writing triumphs as well!)

How HIKI Shifted Their Social Media Marketing Launch Strategy During COVID-19
Tumblr media
HIKI, a newly launched genderless full body sweat brand, was set to reveal their DTC brand in March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic was in full swing. Despite the pandemic, HIKI decided to push forward with the launch by shifting its social media marketing launch strategy to suit the times we were living in. But how did they manage to do so?
Read on for a behind-the-scenes look at how HIKI shifted their social media marketing strategy for a COVID-19 era and how they leaned on their community to co-create their products. You'll hear directly from Tinah Ogalo, Social Media Coordinator at HIKI, and you'll learn:
Where to find inspiration for creating social media content for a Gen-Z/millennial audience
How to leverage your community to inform your marketing strategy (and to create TikTok content)
How to plan for a successful new brand or product launch on social media
How to stay up to date on social media trends and updates
Tumblr media
This post is part of the #BufferBrandSpotlight, a Buffer Social Media series that shines a spotlight on the people that are helping build remarkable brands through social media, community building, content creation, and brand storytelling.
This series was born on Instagram stories, which means you can watch the original interview in our Highlights found on our @buffer Instagram profile.
Who are you?
Hi, I'm Tina w/ an H. I’m the social media coordinator for arfa, a new consumer goods brand house specialising in personal care products. We co-create every product with real people from all over the country (we call them the arfa Collective) because we believe people should have a say in what they put on their bodies. And in return, we make them stakeholders in the business and give them 5% of profits. We currently have two brands that we launched this summer: HIKI, a genderless full body sweat line, and State Of, a skincare and beauty line for menopausal women.
Tumblr media
Where do you find inspiration for HIKI’s social media content?
Our HIKI audience is predominantly Gen-Z / millennials, so I look to platforms and topics that those demos are currently responding to most, like pop culture, TikTok, Giphy, and my Instagram explore page. I also am so inspired by our community's posts about HIKI. They created the brand with us and they’re so invested in its success, so when they post content to their socials about our products, I am always re-posting or coming up with creative ways to showcase their content.

Two things we love: Our Anti-Chafe Stick and @theogermaine 😍
A post shared by HIKI (@hiki_foranybody) on Aug 13, 2020 at 9:05am PDT
One example was the ‘Put a Finger Down’ challenge on TikTok. We saw that this was a great way to engage with our community so we created our own version to show them and others that sweating is totally normal. We had our Collective members, Noelle and Gabe participate in the challenge. Fun Fact - that’s our UX Designer, Ian’s, voice. We thought a British accent would be a nice added touch LOL.
How does managing HIKI’s social media account and community look like on a day-to-day basis?
Every morning I check to see what posts I’ve got lined up for the day, and then I go through all of our notifications that I may have missed from the night before. For the rest of the day, I’m working on the content calendar that’s two weeks out, searching for the latest trends, leveraging audience insights, making creative briefs for assets I want to incorporate into the feed, and working closely with our designers to create custom content for each platform.
HIKI was launched in March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic was in full swing. How did HIKI shift its marketing launch strategy to suit the times we were living in?
I joined in June, so I wasn’t at arfa for the initial launch, but the team did an amazing job. They had all of these plans for launch, then when COVID hit, people's lives and priorities shifted of course, as a business ours did as well. It felt counter-intuitive to what we were trying to build – products and brands that put people first – to launch for-profit as though the world hadn't changed. We also realized sourcing supplies was a big problem for a lot of folks, so we decided to instead give away all of the products we had ready to sell and ship to healthcare personnel, essential workers, and first responders—we ended up giving away 20,000 products, and I am so proud of that.
It felt counter-intuitive to what we were trying to build – products and brands that put people first – to launch for-profit as though the world hadn't changed.
It also helped us a lot when we officially launched for sale in July, because we had about 300 reviews on the site and had already gotten some amazing feedback from customers that I could use on social. Beyond that, we really leaned on our Collective, the people from all over the country we built the brand with, and micro and nano influencers to get as much vibrant and fun content as possible to push on our organic and paid channels to spread awareness. And it worked! The response to our branding on social accounts has been overwhelmingly positive.
What marketing/social media advice do you have for brands that are pre-launch?
Launches are always hectic (but so fun!), so it’s important to do as much heavy lifting beforehand so you can sit back on launch day and enjoy the show. Build up your asset arsenal so you have lots of social content to choose from in the first few weeks, gift 50-100 influencers in the 20K-100K range to generate buzz, partner with like-minded brands on social giveaways to build up your email list, and do lots of research on relevant hashtags. And definitely have at least a two-week plan so then you can breathe.

How do you leverage HIKI's community to inform your marketing strategy?
Our Collective wants us to succeed just as much as we do, getting feedback from them is always great because it’s so inspiring. Creating engaging stories such as polls and questions allows us to see what our community likes and doesn't like. Right now we know that they’re big fans of product shots and memes. They tell us how they incorporate HIKI into their lives and in turn, helps us share with our community different HIKI Hacks.

Tumblr media
HIKI's Co-ounders with The Collective members
What’s your number one tip for engaging with HIKI’s community?
Be active and listen! Check throughout the day that you’ve answered everyone, pinned tweets, liked comments. Even on the weekends, I check on our page in the morning, midday, and evening. It’s so important to us that our social account feels like a person(because it is! It’s me! :)) and we all are engaging with our feeds regularly, so the same should go for HIKI.
How do you stay up to date on social media/marketing trends?
I am always on the platforms, looking at what interesting new brands are doing and what’s trending. (Side note: I LIVE for TikTok trends). I also listen to podcasts and read social media blogs, like Homemade Social, to stay in the know.
What's your favorite HIKI product and why?
I love all of our children equally, but if I HAD to pick, I’d say the Body Powder because it smells amazing, is talc-free, and rubs into my skin seamlessly. Besides putting some on my lower back to fight my daily back sweat, I also use it as a setting powder.

Bad news? Talcum powder is harmful and it can be found in many personal care products. Good news? We don’t use talc 😏

Journalism Schools, relevance vs. cost
Journalism Schools, relevance vs. cost https://ift.tt/32l0M0a
Tumblr media
Should students pay $30,000 or even up to $100,000 to attend a journalism school in the United States? Is it realistic considering the starting salaries in the profession? Is teaching journalism schools actually needed?
An interesting discussion was prompted last week by Anita Zielina, director of innovation and leadership at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY (and a former JSK Fellow at Stanford, class of 2012). Anita tweeted the table below. It is lifted from the tuition comparison calculator of the Craig Newmark school) which sums up the cost of some of the best J-schools in America:
On average, a student will pay $57,000 per year to attend one of these J-schools (living expenses not included). Compared to that, the SciencesPo Journalism school where I teach in Paris looks like a bargain at $16,500 per year. For that price, you get the best journalism school in France, which also offers a dual degree with the Paris School of International Affairs — end of our commercial break.
Rafat Ali, creator of Skift and a pioneer in digital journalism and media entrepreneurship, joined the discussion by tweeting:
“Well, please don’t go to journalism school, the debate is settled for something this expensive. If you have to go, pick the cheapest school, it is your own initiative that matters most in “learning” journalism skills”.
During my years as a JSK Fellow, some of my classmates at the Stanford Graduate School of Business incurred $100k or $150,000 in student loans. When asked about it, most of them were not utterly concerned given the expected starting salary for the Stanford MBA: $200,000+ a year. For 2019, it amounted to $216,000, including a base salary of $152,000, a signing bonus of $28,000 and an expected performance bonus of $66,000.
That’s for the stellar word of MBAs.
Back to Earth with journalism salaries. According to Glassdoor, it looks like this:
Yep, an American journalist makes almost five times less than a junior Stanford MBA hitting the job market. Worth mentioning also is the rise of freelancing. Many Columbia graduates won’t even get a real contract for several years and will be either pure freelance or “permalance” where they work a regular gig but without the security or benefits.
It’s a double whammy for a young journalist attending Arizona State or Columbia: they will pay the equivalent of an MBA or a law school tuition for a salary that will make the burden of their student loan almost unbearable.
That’s my first point: top universities are making a huge margin on tuition and they should better align their fees with expected salaries of their students.
There is room for it. Look at this chart: in ten years, higher education costs grew at a rate of 184 percent vs cumulative inflation of 56 percent:
The longer the period, the wider the gap between inflation and tuition fees: between 1970 to 2018, the Consumer Price Index in the United States has been multiplied by 6.5x. During the same period, the average cost of higher education grew 19x for private institutions (to $30,282/year) and 22x for public education ( to $7054), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Center for Education Statistics. Again, we are talking about averages here. No wonder why outstanding student loans have soared to $1.41 trillion in 2019, a 33% increase since 2014.
There are several consequences: first, journalism curriculums are less likely to attract people as they see their future financial condition — high cost of education met by low salary — degrading. Two, they are less likely to in journalism as the trade mingles with multiple commercial streams: production of branded content, all forms of “corporate journalism” and the various flavors of communication, all of them hungry for genuine editorial talent. As a senior business writer who crossed that Rubicon told me once: “Look, I’m 45, I have worked at Reuters and The Economist, do you know how much I need to live in Brooklyn with two kids? Now I’m doing fine, I have more time and more access for my reporting… But yeah, I can’t bash the client…”
Now let’s talk about how relevant it is today to join a journalism school. I still believe that it is necessary to give to those who will collect and shape information proper training and methods. I’m writing this from France where we are still squabbling with the Yellow Vest movement, which recently morphed into violent opposition to the pension reform. One of the key features of this populist unrest is the emergence of a new self-labeled “journalist” category, halfway between political activists and agitators, a banner in one hand a GoPro in the other. They present themselves as authentic reporters, bringing up an ethic that knowingly blends journalism and activism. In such a context, I think journalists taught with all the fundamentals of the trade are more necessary than ever.
Having said that, I think journalism teaching is in need of a profound change on two counts. One is bringing more expertise into the profession by making it attractive for people who have already accumulated a solid experience in a field that is particularly hard to cover (economics, science, law, medicine, you name it). Two, I don’t think organizing a curriculum around one or two years makes sense anymore. In the next decades, the media market will call for numerous qualifications that no one can even fathom today. New forms of teaching would, therefore, encompass flexible, lifelong-learning modules, certified “nano-degrees” corresponding to skills in demand at a given moment of a career, taught online or on short bursts of in-class courses, and fostering communities of learners.
My prediction is that in less than five years, the majority of journalism teaching will have made the switch to life-long, segmented learning. That future makes way more sense than asking someone to commit for a $60,000 or $100,000 tuition bill to be paid back with a $50,000 a year salary.
Ask Deepnews (part 3): “How far can you go in terms of accuracy of your deep learning model?”
[Here, we reply to readers and users questions, a few weeks after the launch of Deepnews.ai’s professional newsletter system (the Distills).]
— The short answer is: we will reach an asymptote that will be below absolute accuracy. I can’t think of a Natural Language deep learning model that is 100 percent accurate.
The way we currently measure the accuracy of our main model (the Deepnews Scoring Model or DSM), is comparing the score of an article returned by the DSM to three evaluations made by humans. We did it for about 10,000 articles, a process that was important for the calibration of our model. But taking into account the law of diminishing returns, we would need to do many more comparisons to jump from, say, 86 percent to 90 percent accuracy.
Eventually, though we will. It would be great to have a batch of 100,000 or 300,000 articles tested in parallel by humans and the machine. Ideally in several languages… But it is a costly process (we need to pay qualified people to assess the stories, it can’t be done by Mechanical Turks), and we could easily consume half a million dollars in doing just that.
We also have so much on our plate right now, like testing new breeds of model, trying to understand what the neural networks “sees” in a story, transferring the DSM to other languages and the uncertainties that go along with that, adapting the Deepnews algorithm to specialized content, launching a new series of Distills in a few weeks, plus maybe doing some bespoke verticals for corporate customers as described last week.
2020 will be a busy year.
