It took the new version of "We Didn't Start the Fire" playing three or four times over the course of five hours, but I finally realized that we have a perfect opportunity to make a new version of "You Can't Fight the Homestuck", but we start where the first version left off and add all the stuff that happened after the song came out, including the fact that Homestuck ended but is still going too.

This is very long and kind of about a fic i barely remember reading. But I was asked to post this because it gets into the dynamic between Eridan and Gamzee so here it is:

(also like TW: mentions of abuse and rape cuz it happens in the fic)

I’m a little unsatisfied with how that Eridan/Gamzee idea in that hivebound fic (which I only read a bit of) was written. I want to write something similar but it only works because Eridan is the anti-hero side character. I like him too much to write from anyone else's POV first so his POV can be revealed and hurt as bad as it should.

I can’t write Gamzee, but I also can’t replace him. If Eridan were to have the same fucked up conversation with someone he hates, like Sollux or Vriska, his anger would seem fueled solely by personal distaste. However, it can’t be someone he likes either because that's out of character. He doesn’t put himself above Feferi, Karkat or even Kanaya; they’re practically the only ones he listens to so they’re out of the question as well. He hasn’t talked to anyone else enough to get a good grasp on their dynamic. All that leaves is Gamzee. Eridan doesn’t have any strong opinions about Gamzee.

Eridan feels so strongly that his idea of the world is the truth and when Gamzee acts the way he does it just pisses Eridan the fuck off because Gamzee gets to be blissfully unaware of what pain is... Eridan wants so badly to ruin it because it's not fair that he has to suffer and Gamzee doesn't...

And it sucks because you can tell in the pesterlogs that he is trying not to start shit... That he really rather not talk about his problems with Gamzee but Gamzee just keeps talking nonsense and Eridan snaps at him because magic isn't real.... Someone took that away from him and he can't stand that Gamzee thinks it's ok to tell Karkat lies....

It's like.... He's doing the exact thing he was trying to avoid in an even worse way....

It's just human(troll?) nature to want comfort and validation for being mistreated but Eridan doesn't want to seem weak.... He doesn't actually want to seem needy and whiny... He's too prideful for that... So he just accepts it as the way the world is because to know its wrong would be a feeling too hard to deal with...

To know that the world isn't actually miserable and that it's just him who has a hard time is unbearable and the only way to deal with that is to be angry at the world for being shitty.... Be angry at the thing that hurts because that's not weak..... That's being tough and above crying and complaining....

He's trying not to be a selfish douche and accept the challenges in life without complaining because that's more mature but he's still a hurt little kid and reacts immaturely because it's not fair he had to grow up faster than everyone else.

reacting like a child when you are a child is understandable.... trying to be a mature adult is actually a noble ambition... But reacting immaturely while claiming to be an adult is what makes you seem like a horrible douche.... Because nobody else sees how hard you're trying.... All they see is you claiming to be the bigger person but being cold and sometimes just plain mean...

It's almost admirable that he's trying so hard to just be better instead of bothering everyone else with what he knows is annoying immature behavior... He knows he's not suppose to be any better than anyone else even though it's completely contradictory not only to his blood class and personality but the basic psychological need to feel loved and validated... he's stuck in this conundrum of being upset but thinking he's not allowed to be and It's unimaginably frustrating... He's trying to follow these impossible rules of what he thinks is the world's expectations of a good person.. So to see Gamzee just get a free pass? Well that's not fucking fair! And if a good person is someone who follows the impossible rules, then someone who doesn't is a bad person and must be corrected like they corrected him.

That's why he yells at Gamzee.

Which is why it doesn’t make sense the way it happened in hivebound. (I'm writing this part years later so I barely remember what happened in that scene but) if Eridan was Asexual, and on Alternia you are forced to reproduce, then yeah… that would mean Eridan was raped… and also believes that it’s just the way life is… so if Gamzee started, in Eridan's eyes, “complaining” about the fact that /he/ was being raped too I feel like that should set Eridan off in a defensive way. Not an aggressive way. Eridan would snap at him not because he thinks Gamzee “deserved it” or something but because if it’s true Gamzee didn’t have to deal with that then Eridan didn’t have to either. Which would mean that it’s not the way the world is. And he was in fact abused and raped and it shouldn’t have happened. Which is too difficult to accept and therefore Gamzee must be wrong and that’s just the way life is. Gamzee isn’t a “victim” he’s “complaining” because that’s what Eridan gets yelled at for all the time, “whining and complaining”. And if Eridan gets yelled at for it then Gamzee must be yelled at too because that’s literally how Eridan's world works.

In Eridan's world, there's no sympathy for people who are hurt and its wrong to want comfort for it. he's wrong for wanting love and attention and gets yelled at for seeking them out.

how fucking sad to imagine a kid who believes being abused is normal and wanting to be loved is wrong.

Learning the Ropes

This was a terrible idea. A pretty damn awful, terrible idea. But it’s been days since he’d last seen the sky and after missing two meals already his senses seemed to be coming back to him. Well, some of them. The drugs in his system still lingering after sweeps of use but tolerance gave him some sense of stability. Iatgor wanted to see the city for once. Being Hivebound all these sweeps just starved him for something different. He would just leave for a bit. A few hours at most. His lusus and Babrel wouldn’t know he was gone. Everything was going to be ok.

But once on the streets he felt an overwhelming wave of panic where he should have been ecstatic. He knows if he was caught by his butler there was going to be consequences. Most likely he’d get his face paint privileges revoked. Now that would be some truly troubling shit. Making it just a block or two from his lawnring he was already lost. His mind just a purple haze and his eyes lazily sweep to the left and the right. Each time he blinked he felt his eyelids grow heavier. Any time he would another troll they noticeably winced and headed off in the opposite direction. It seemed no one wanted to deal with a lost mini subjug.
