Public Safety Detectives interacting with their babies (Shorts)

Jin Namba

Earlier that day, Namba saw his wife mixing the vegetables in the pan with closed eyes. So, when their son woke them up in the middle of the night, he placed a reassuring hand on her: "I've got him," he whispered. Jin kissed his wife's forehead and went to see what had disrupted his son's peace.

A barely audible "I'll come in a minute" left his wife's lips before Jin could leave their shared bedroom. The man hoped she wouldn't be true to her words and would continue her well-deserved sleep.

"What's bothering you, Baby Chicken?" Jin whispered, and a chuckle left his lips. He cleared his throat to calm himself, remembering his exhausted wife. Even if their son was already a few months old, he couldn't stop laughing when he called him "Baby Chicken", even if his wife hated this nickname.

After checking the boy's diaper and giving him his bottle, the man could finally admire his best project in peace. Baby Namba was softly snoring in his hands. Jin could barely stop himself from pinching his cheeks. However, what he couldn't stop, was the lullaby that came out of his lips. The boy smiled in his sleep, encouraging his dad to continue singing softly. After another ten minutes, Jin put his son back in his crib.

"Can you sing me lullabies, too?" a groggy voice asked him.

Jin chuckled and kissed his wife, who leaned against the wall. Of course, he could do it. He could do everything for the person who made him the happiest person in the world.

Hideki Ishigami

The aide in Captain Ishigami's car was rocking their leg. After their first mission as a Public Safety Cadet, they were scolded harshly by their Instructor, and the road back to the Academy was torture. They had to bite their lip to prevent themselves from crying.

Ishigami, in the contrast, seemed calmer than ever. He yelled at the poor newbie enough. However, he was far from being tranquil. At every red light, he looked at his watch.

"Can you call the most recent number in my contact list?" Ishigami finally broke the silence. His aide did what they were asked, with shaky hands and teary eyes. A voice they recognized to be of another of the Public Safety Detectives answered.

"Hey, MC! Give the phone to our daughter," Ishigami greeted.

Finally, the aide started to calm down. Something more interesting than their inner conflicts was in front of their eyes. Now, they knew who wore the pair of the wedding band that Ishigami had on his ring finger. Moreover, they found out that the frightening Instructor had a family.

"Hello, honey," Ishigami started. He was met only by a barely audible "Mhm." A sigh escaped the Captain's lips. "I'm sorry I couldn't make it to your concert. I sincerely apologize. What can I do for you to forgive me? Do you want to dance for me when I arrive home? What cake do you want to celebrate your concert?"

The aide's jaw was on the floor. They had no idea their Instructor could have this sort of emotion. And in front of them? Wow!

"I just want you to come back," a sad voice whispered. "And I want you to know that I'll be mad at you for a few more days," the girl continued, this time a little bit happier. Surprisingly, Ishigami let out a chuckle. After a few more words, he ended the call. However, he could feel his aide's eyes on him.

"What?" Captain Ishigami asked, more than dissatisfied.

"I didn't expect you to be so soft," the aide mumbled, afraid of their Instructor's reaction.

"For you, I'm your Instructor who is supposed to prepare you for your future job. For her, I'm her father, who is supposed to love and care for her," Ishigami answered with a barely visible smile.

Hyogo Kaga

"You dumb shitheads!" Kaga's voice reverberated through the entire Public Safety Academy. He was "explaining" to the newbies how none of them passed the last exam and how they could give up on their dreams of becoming detectives. However, his narrative was interrupted by the creak of the entrance door. The man was a second away from yelling at whoever had enough guts to disregard his lesson. Though, a little head with too familiar hair styled in two braids popped up. The little girl, who barely had enough force to close the door, ran towards the Instructor.

"Papa!" she yelled while jumping in his arms.

Kaga knelt in front of her and caught her midway.

"What are you doing here, brat?" he softly asked, while planting a kiss on her temple, as if he didn't scare the living shit out of his students a minute ago.

"I asked aunt to bring me here because I missed you," Baby Kaga answered while snuggling against her father's chest.

The man hugged his daughter tightly and reassuringly.

"I also missed you," Kaga whispered in her hair. "What is mom doing?"

Baby Kaga lifted her head and looked deadly serious at her father.

"She was cleaning. I told her not to do it because you commanded her to relax. But she didn't listen!"

Kaga rolled his eyes, yet a barely visible smile appeared on his face. He had no idea how he got so lucky to have a smartass daughter and a badass wife who gave birth to their baby son a few weeks ago and was already causing problems again.

Shusuke Soma

"I don't remember you telling me so many compliments," Soma's oldest son pouted while listening to his father talking with his newborn sister.

"I did. You just forgot," Shusuke attention turned to his oldest kid. "Do you remember things from when you were a baby?"

The little boy shook his head, understanding what his dad talked about. So, forgetting his sadness, he sat on his father's lap and looked at his sister.

"She's so tiny and cute," Baby Soma said in awe.

Shusuke nodded his head. A tear of happiness ran down his cheek. His wife was sleeping in their bedroom, still recovering from giving birth a few days ago. It was her first day back home. His son watched his daughter with an amazed face, willing to take her in his hands. And his daughter was a bundle of joy that increased his happiness even more. What had he done in the past life to deserve all of this?

"You also were this tiny and cute," Shusuke told his son. "You'll always be cute, even if you are taller than me."

Baby Soma rubbed his chin.

"What if I want to be strong and handsome, not cute?"

Soma let out a chuckle.

"Nah, you'll always be cute for me, just like your mother and your sister."

Takaomi Tsugaru

MC came up with the idea of having a team building after a few more newbies entered Tsugaru's team. So, Tsugaru, Tsugaru, Momose, and a few "kids" were sharing a drink in a somehow awkward atmosphere.

Little Hare and Momose were already accustomed to Tsugaru's antiques. However, it was strange for the rookies to try to enjoy the night with the person who yesterday took them out of an investigation because of their minor mistakes. It was also strange to see someone enjoy the strange combinations of food their Captain had on his plate. So, Momose, Tsugaru, and MC enjoyed each others' company while the newbies tried their best to look relaxed.

"I also want this!" a kid's voice yelled from behind the senior's back.

All three of them turned to the familiar voice. A little girl ran to Tsugaru's lap and was a second away from taking his chopsticks to try what got her attention. However, her dad stopped her.

"Better try what's on your mom's plate," Tsugaru guided the girl to MC's food.

"What are you doing here?" MC asked, as the responsible adult she was.

"Grandpa brought us here," the girl explained and took a piece of meat from MC's plate. Tsugaru put away his plate to make enough space for his daughter's food. He rested his head on hers.

"Us?" both Tsugarus asked.

"Yes, did you forget that you have two kids?" the boy who said this leaned above his parents and put away the beet pints they had in front of them. "I think you have had enough alcohol for today."

Little Hare and Tsugaru made space for the boy to stay between them.

"They haven't touched any alcohol yet, Noa," Momose said with a chuckle.

"Probably they are so old they get drunk on smell alone," the boy continued. His parents pinched his sides and chuckled in faux offense. At least now, their junior knew that there was someone with a sharper tongue and sarcasm than their boss.

Seiji Goto

"So, this paper goes in here, and this one in here," Seiji told his one-year-old son, who sat on his lap. After half an hour of sorting the papers, the detective put his son on his hip and went towards the laundry basket. "Mommy's white shirt, daddy's white shirt, mommy's cream skirt, daddy's other white shirt, all of them can bathe together. But they can't bathe with your pink romper. Do you understand?" Seiji kissed his baby on his head. In this position - sitting on the floor - MC found her boys.

"What are you doing?" she asked, with a soft smile on her face.

"I'm teaching our son to do the chores. We have already sorted my papers and the laundry. I don't want him to be as useless as me," Seiji said with a content smile.

MC frowned while getting closer to her boys.

"You're not useless," her lips whispered next to her husband's lips. Seiji leaned closer to kiss her. The boy on his lap started to clap his hands. His parents kissed him on both cheeks. "You have the best father in the world," MC told her son.

"And the best mother," Seiji added.

Ayumu Shinonome

Ayumu typed fast at his computer, looking at his superior. They exchanged looks that meant more than one hundred words. The hour at the corner of their screens was making fun of them, running faster than they expected. The first trains were already going. However, it didn't matter because both were away from their families on a work trip. Suddenly, a ringing broke the "idyllic" atmosphere between men. Hyogo gave Ayumu an annoyed look. Yet, after he saw the name on the screen, he changed his mind.

"Take it while I'm going for a smoke."

As Kaga went farther, the smile on Ayumu's face got bigger.

"Do you have two spare minutes?" MC's voice started.

Ayumu became alert. What if something happened at home? Was his baby daughter okay? A day before he left, Baby Shinonome called him "papa" for the first time. Suddenly, all his worries disappeared when Ayumu heard his daughter's voice.

"Papapapapapa!"

A pout appeared on the man's face. Why he had to be away from his girls? It wasn't fare!

"Aw, who is your favorite parent?" Ayumu asked when the girl was still mumbling. He didn't have to see to know that MC rolled her eyes at his childish behavior. So, to make everyone happy, he continued: "I love you both, my girls." Ayumu's cheeks were burning, and he could bet that MC's were too. She wasn't accustomed to him behaving like this.

After a few more words, Ayumu ended his call, and a voice caught his attention. It was Kaga who finished his cigarette on the balcony and was returning to work.

"Papa also loves you, honey. Wait a little more, and I'll be back," the frightening Captain said.

Knowing looks were exchanged between partners. They were even more motivated to finish their work and return to their families.

Toru Kurosawa

"How are babies made?" Toru's three-year-old daughter asked him while he was still in bed while MC tapped something for work on her computer.

In front of Toru's eyes ran all the possibilities to avoid the question. He could invent a story: his daughter would believe it, or tell her to ask mom: it would be fun to watch. However, he took his job as a father with the utmost sobriety. So, he put Baby Kurosawa in front of him and started his explanation:

"When a female and a male love each other, sometimes they want to have a family and babies. And for this, they usually have sex, but there are more methods to have kids."

A round of sweat ran down Kurasawa's forehead.

"And what is sex?"

Toru took a deep breath.

"It's a very intimate thing. You have to trust the other person to do it."

Baby Kurosawa awed understanding. A lot of other questions ran through her head. However, a sweet smell coming from the kitchen tickled her nose. She turned to run away and see what food was waiting for her and met her mother in the doorway.

"For how long are you here?" Toru asked with a pout on his face.

"From the moment she asked you the first question. I caught her words and got interested in your answer," MC answered with a chuckle. "Have I ever told you that you do a fantastic job educating your kid?"

Toru shook his head only to hear his wife's compliments again. He could lack seriosity in his day-to-day life, yet his daughter was an important matter that had to be treated correspondingly.
