Dream is a bird watcher on a trip with other birders to see exotic birds. The trip is cool, Dream has seen tons of rare birds for the first time live and not just in books, but there is. something. weird going on - Dream thinks that he has a bird following him, that none of the other people on the tour can see, and of which he can't get a clear picture.

The bird is golden - reds and yellows and oranges in so many different shades color its feathers; if Dream wasn't living in the 21st century he would think it was a phoenix - which don't exist and even if they did exist it wouldn't be following Dream around on a birding tour of tropical forests!

At the very least, Dream is going to go out alone and try to get a picture! Then while he's out in the afternoon light all alone, the bird lands on his head. Soon after it jumps down to perch on his forearm; Dream slow reaches out with his other hand to touch this beautiful (stalker) of a bird.

Dream with awed pets: Hello 🤩

Phoenix: Hello. You're lovely 😍 I'm Hob.

Well, it's not every day that what is obviously a mythical creature talks to you and thinks you're pretty, and Dream's just going to roll with it, but ...... WOW!

Hob likes the pretty man - he's all blacks and grays and bone white against the forest greens. Hob wants to keep him, but knows enough of the human world to know that his pretty boy probably can't live in Hob's forest. Hob hasn't played at being human in a long time.

Omg this is fantastic.

One moment Dream is trying to get over the fact that there's a talking bird perched and preening on his arm - and the next moment he's tumbling backwards with his arms full of a whole entire man. Golden skin covered in soft hair, deep brown eyes gazing at him, so much warm flesh under his hands instead of feathers! The man grins mischievously. He practically shimmers with magic, but he really does look like a perfectly normal person. Before Dream can blink, the man isn't even naked anymore - he's appropriately dressed as a tourist in a colourful shirt (the same colours as his wings were, of course) and some indecently tiny shorts.

Dream is stunned. And incredibly curious. So when Hob loops their arms together and happily leads the way out of the forest and back to the resort where the other birders are staying, Dream doesn't complain. Nor does he complain when Hob confidently refers to himself as "Dream's boyfriend, just arrived to join him on this lovely trip".

If Dream didn't know better he'd say he was going mad. But the large golden bird happily nesting in the duvet of his hotel bed, shedding feathers everywhere... he couldn't possibly be imagining that.

Or the kisses that Hob gave him before smugly transforming back into bird form for a nap. Definitely not Dream’s imagination...

The funny thing was, it was never quiet in space. Hob had thought it would be, that first time he’d left the planet in his own ship... At some point he’d had formed the idea that once he got up there by himself, once he left the public spaceport and the press of overpopulation behind, he would leave the noise behind, too. Find, at last, a pure silence, the likes of which he hadn’t experienced in all his long life. Space, he’d thought, under the right circumstances, could be free of everything, of bugs and advertisements and other people, of every little noise. He’d been wrong.

The funny thing was, it was never quiet in space.

Hob had thought it would be, that first time he’d left the planet in his own ship.

Commercial spaceflights were loud, of course, and always had been – as bad as planes were, back in the day, and maybe even worse, during the longer flights to the Mars colonies – industrial-sized rockets generating industrial-sized noise ferrying care packages and flour and crying children across the solar system instead of cross-country. But at some point he had formed the idea that once he got up there by himself, once he left the public spaceport and the press of overpopulation behind, he would leave the noise behind, too.

Find, at last, a pure silence, the likes of which he hadn’t experienced in all his long life. Space, he’d thought, under the right circumstances, could be free of everything, of bugs and advertisements and other people, of every little noise.

He’d been wrong.

It wasn’t just that his little ship, new as she was, made her own small moans and groans on that first test run beyond the edge of Earth’s atmosphere. The crackle of the radio, the hum of the engines, the muted whistle of the air purifier – all these sounds could be turned off, and Hob had done so. He’d shut down everything but the most basic life support and floated in the liminal space between the Earth and the Moon for a full ten minutes, a tiny soap bubble in the darkness. He’d breathed deeply, taken his mind away from the sound of his own heartbeat, and listened.

Turns out, space makes its own music.

As the years went by, he gained a variety of descriptions of the music from other spacefarers who’d heard it too. Some of the more fanciful freelancers called it celestial jazz and discussed at length whether it followed a particular meter, if it was chromatic or pentatonic in scale, and other musical terms Hob barely understood.

A group of missionaries he met on a remote Martian outpost insisted that the music was the means by which God was expressing themself directly to the universe.

Scientists talked about background radiation and planetary resonance and something called vacuum atmospherics on which he read several papers before deciding, ruefully, that there were some mathematic principles which he would simply never understand.

He’d asked Dream about it, once. Had even shut down all systems like he had that first time, just to listen. (He still does, occasionally, because whatever it is, it is beautiful.)

What is it? he’d asked. You must know.

And Dream had smirked that particular Endless smirk that drove Hob mad, and drawn him away from the viewscreen and its twinkling miniature Earth.

Stars dream, too, Hob Gadling.

And that had been all Hob had been able to glean from his lover on the subject.

Hob’s ship was not a thing of beauty. Her design was far too boxy and utilitarian for that. But Hob loved his snug little vessel with an almost obsessive affection. She reminded him of a camper van he’d had in the 1960s, or the massive rolltop desk he’d put in his study in the late 1800s, everything folded away in neat drawers and cubby holes, not an inch wasted. He reveled in it every time he made ready for a trip: packing away his clothes and gear, choosing rations, replacing the air filters, checking the water purifier and the drip lines on his tiny hydroponic garden.

And, crucially, she was all his.

Even the New Inn, way back when, hadn’t really been all his. There’d been investors and mortgage holders and zoning committees and eventually the National Heritage List to contend with, and while Hob had been the one to pick the lighting fixtures and design the wooden inlay on the bar, it had always been fundamentally a group project. Not to mention that its very purpose was to serve as a gathering place, a safe space for anyone who happened to walk through the door.

Not so his spaceship. All right, he hadn’t built her himself – despite his best efforts, he would never be more than a mediocre aerospace engineer – but Hob had spent weeks at the dealership, poring over schematics and blueprints, personally choosing the design of every single cubic centimeter. The sales associate had leered a little when Hob insisted on a double-wide bunk, given that all the other specs were for single occupancy – but he was paying cash, not financing, so it wasn’t like they were going to argue with him.

He’d known it was worth a little leering, the first time he and Dream had wrapped their arms around each other and gazed out the tiny porthole window at the stars, so close you could almost reach out and touch them.

Dream had been with him when his ship was delivered to the public spaceport nearest Hob’s flat. They’d walked around her together, Dream smiling slightly as Hob enthusiastically described the engines and pointed out the retractable heat shields. His long fingers had trailed over the official designation engraved on the side – Hob still thought of it as a license plate, like on his car – and he’d raised an eyebrow.

“I know,” Hob had laughed. “Can you believe it?”

“You did not choose this number on purpose?”

“Believe it or not, no. They’re automatically assigned during manufacture, randomly generated so each one is unique. This is pure human coincidence, my friend. Or maybe fate, who knows – we’ll have to ask your brother. Not that he’ll tell us.”

Dream had traced the numbers again: UKCS-001389, big and bold. Then he’d smiled.

“Come, take me inside,” he’d said. “I would see that my beloved will live well among the stars.”

Hob had locked the hatch behind them.

Later, after Hob had showed off every corner and cubbyhole, and after they had thoroughly evaluated the comfort and structural integrity of the double-wide bunk, they’d sprawled together, fingers finding new patterns on familiar skin.

“Have you given any thought as to what you might name her?” Dream had asked idly.

“Some. My first idea was to call her the Robin.” Hob had sighed. “I liked to think of that name flying off to the moon and other planets – but it was already taken and the UKSA doesn’t allow for duplicates.”

“And your second choice?”

“Well,” Hob had turned and run the backs of his knuckles down Dream’s cheek. “I do have another idea. But I wanted to ask you about it first. I was thinking… well, you’ve told me so much about her… I was thinking, I might name her Jessamy.”

Dream’s head had turned slowly toward Hob, an inscrutable look in his eye.

“I know it was a while ago now, even by our standards. But she was with you for so long. She loved you, protected you –”

“And failed, in the end,” he’d said thickly. “And died.”

“She didn’t fail. And I don’t think her death is the most important thing about her. I mean, I don’t think it’s bad luck or anything, you know? It’s only one bad moment in a long, long string of good ones. And, you know,” he had stumbled gamely on, “I like the idea that part of her – part of you – would be traveling with me. A new adventure. It would make me feel… close to you, if she were with me. When you aren’t here.”

Dream had simply looked at him, for a long moment, and then pushed him onto his back and rolled on top of him, kissing him slowly and sweetly and deeply.

“Even after all this time, the depth of your heart never fails to astonish me. I would be honored,” he’d said, “if Jessamy were to fly again with you. And so, I think, would she.”

The next day, Hob had gone to the nearest Space Agency office, waited in an interminable line, and officially registered UK Civilian Ship 001389 as the Jessamy.

A week later, she flew for the first time. Or again, depending on how you measure it. And thus the newest chapter in Hob’s long life had begun.

Hyde…this is Hyde. Phoenix noticed a while ago that you’d been cleaning the same spot on the bar for the better half on five minutes while you looked over to where Mickey was standing with Logan on his hip. Taking away to Hob about something that happened earlier in the day.

“I’m sure you’ll remove the wood varnish if you keep cleaning in circles Hyde.” Phoenix takes the rag from your hand and switches it out for her empty glass. “What’s on your mind?”

“He isn’t going to ask is he?” You sigh as you work to fix Phoenix another drink.

“Who’s not gonna ask you what?” The thing at Natasha is she liked to play dumb, but in reality—she knew everyone’s dirty little secrets and who was hot on who. And she knew damn well you and Fanboy had a thing for each other.

“Mickey—I thought maybe since things had been going alright he’d ask me to be his valentine.”

“Maybe you should just ask him?” Phoenix shrugs like it isn’t the most obvious answer to your problem. “I’m sure if you asked he’d say yes.”

Little do you know, as you take a shot of liquid courage and make your away out from behind the bar that Bob was in the middle of encouraging Mickey to ask.

“It’s Hyde man, she’s so sweet in you.”

“I dunno—“ Mickey sighs reluctantly, he’d done a few things to really set your self confidence back recently and something inside him kept telling him you deserved more than he could give you. “I just feel like she could do better.”

“Maybe.” Bob Shrugs. “But she’s coming in here as we speak.” He smirks wildly and turns on his heals. “Good luck Romeo!” And to that Mickey is turning around with a dear in headlights stare.

“Hyde—fancy seeing you here.” God Fanboy wanted to kick himself so damn hard right now.

“I uh, I work here?” You awkwardly point out as you look down and smooth over your apron. “Hey listen—you don’t have to say yes or anything and I totally understand if you’re busy or just don’t want to.” You begin to ramble and Micky just knows what’s happening. Fuck—he can’t let you ask him, he has to ask you.

“Be my valentine?” He interrupts, no doubt in his mind that he wants to be yours. It catches you off guard but you smile nevertheless. “I should have asked sooner, I’m sorry, I’m still just trying to wrap my head around all this.” It’s the truther of the matter and you understand, but Mickey ignited a fire inside your chest you just couldn’t control.

“Of course.” You smile, nodding in response as you move a little closer and plant a soft kiss on his left cheek. “I’d love to.”

“That’s uh—yeah okay, great!”

“God these two make me wanna pull my eyes out of their sockets.” Jake grumbles from where he’s standing at the pool table. “Poppy, what’s your guy doing for you this Valentine’s Day?”

“I didn’t know we were on speaking terms Seresin?” Poppy just side eyes the man who almost ruined her relationship before it started.

Can’t believe we got the most scene ever with Hob and Rue, and you think it’s capped by Aabria pulling out a phoenix feather and giving it to Brennan when Oscar only just described Rue’s outfit for the hunt, and then of course Brennan “Bird Facts” Lee Mulligan just stuffs the whole feather in his mouth in a manner that can only be described as “voracious nomming” and eats it.

So Researcher Hob wants to open a sanctuary for the outside "monsters" that he's found -- he wants them to have a safe place to live and trive.

Hob thinks he's found the perfect forest for his monster "friends," but it's only perfect because it might be already home to a least one monster and the locals are afraid to go into it.

Hob doesn’t want to encroach uninvited on another creature's territory and he's not sure what the creature might be, but based on the locals descriptions it might be a stag forest spirit or maybe, just maybe..... a dragon.

Hob doesn’t want to get his hopes up that there might be a whole (wonderful) ¡dragon! in this forest, but he's going to hike around and see, before he builds his little house and starts bringing his saved monsters to the forest.

While on one of his hikes, Hob encounters a beautiful but standoffish man, Dream. At first, Dream is angry that Hob is in the forest, but when Hob explains why he's in the forest,,,,Dream seems intrigued.

Hob talks to Dream at length about wanting to be friends with the extraordinary creature already in the forest, and ask its permission to build both a little cottage for Hob himself and to introduce some currently homeless werewolves, a water sprite or two, and what might be a sneakily cheeky phoenix into the forest.

Hob really doesn’t want to impose, but he thinks the forest might be a safe environment for these creatures in need.

Dream seems very curious as to why Hob wouldn't be scared of the dragon or forest spirit. Hob is very much ~ are you kidding!?! Meeting a real live dragon would be the coolest thing ever. Hob pretty much assured Dream that the dragon would probably run from Hob,,,,as Hob would be peppering it with questions. Hob's almost sure dragons, like phoenixes, can talk given their relative ages. (Don't get Hob started about the coffee klatsches he and that phoenix can have..it's a hoot!!) [Is the phoenix Matthew,,,,, maybe].

In any event, Dream says he can probably convince the dragon to visit Hob (Hob: 😍🤩😍🤩) to discuss his propostion.

Is Dream the dragon in human form?!?! What do you think 😉 of course he is. Hob is in for a treat when he gets claimed by a dragon.

Omg this is so much fun!!!! I'm obsessed with imagining Hob’s face when the dragon turns up at his door.

Dream's dragon form is... intimidating. Very large, with diamond shaped black scales which glitter in the sun. His eyes are huge and icy blue, his tail could snap a tree with one strike, and he's got these gorgeous boney horns... kinda scary. Hob is obviously obsessed on first sight.

He offers tea to the dragon, who graciously accepts and drinks it from a bucket. Hob is vibrating with excitement as he explains his plan for the monsters (Dream has already decided that he'll say yes, but it's kind of nice to hear Hob talking so enthusiastically). And Hob says that he'll be happy to do anything for the dragon in return for protection and sanctuary for his mistreated monster friends.

Still in dragon form, Dream agrees to Hob's plan and accepts the idea of keeping the monsters in certain parts of the forest where they can roam free but Hob can keep an eye on them (and Dream won't accidentally eat them). But. Dream would like a little thing in return.

To secure the dragon's protection in a more official magical sense, Hob finds himself laying face down in the middle of a complicated binding circle... with Dream’s long dragon tongue so far up his arse he can hardly breathe. This definitely isn't the way he thought this would turn out... and he's going to get a further shock when he finds out that the dark haired man he originally spoke to is both the dragon AND his husband according to magical law!

Matthew isn't going to believe this... and he definitely isn't gonna want to know how much Hob enjoyed being impaled on the dragon's cock...
