Saw this on youtube and really enjoyed the song and Rosalyn’s singing!
I hadn’t heard of the song before; it’s called “The Bund” (or “Shanghai Bund”) from a popular 1980’s Hong Kong television show with the same title.

so, vtubers are weird because they blur the line between “fictional character” and “actual e-celebrity”
and the boundaries between you and a fictional character are very different than the boundaries between you and an actual e-celebrity
and the thing that really makes it tough to define the boundaries of vtubing properly is that the line isn’t exactly consistent. there’s a sliding scale of vtubers.
on one end of the scale, you’ve got vtubers like Kizuna Ai who are just straight-up fictional characters. yeah, there’s a real woman playing her, but it’s no different than a real woman playing a normal anime character.
and then on the other end, you’ve got the vtubers who aren’t even really playing a character at all, they’re just using an animated avatar instead of facecam.
and then most of the really popular vtubers, like from hololive or nijisanji, fall somewhere in the middle. the EN and ID talents from these companies tend to fall closer to the “actual e-celebrity” side of the scale than the JP or CN talents, who fall closer to the “fictional characters” side, but even within those two groups there’s a sliding scale, and regardless, both groups do still fall generally in the middle.
i remember back in 2017 when Kizuna Ai was first starting to get popular, and i saw people making porn of her, and i thought “is this okay? i mean, yeah, hot anime babe, but also kinda a real person at the same time” and in retrospect i don’t know what i was smoking. Kizuna Ai is absolutely a production. if i had been having these thoughts about a vtuber more along the lines of a Hololive or Nijisanji member, then i’d understand. those vtubers do actually blur the line. but Kizuna Ai doesn’t really. Kizuna Ai is a character. hell, Kizuna Ai may as well actually be an AI like her lore says she is, it’d make no difference.
but, back to the vtubers who do blur the line- the porn issue is a question that still comes up. in general, the industry seems to have decided “yeah, porn is fine”, but there’s definitely some wiggle room for edge cases to crop up.
it’s all very weird, given this is kinda an undiscovered country.

now that the hololive en are out in full force, I already saw some japanese sub of clips of their streams, like, everyone’s one big family here.
I guess the jp fans understand how overseas fans feel now,
everyone’s supporting all the girls and that makes me happy.

Because I’ve made my love for Hololive known on this blog, and because I assume some of you love it too, I’d like to talk about what’s going on with Cover Corp and China.
Kiryu Coco and Akai Haato were suspended from streaming for three weeks due to the mentioning of Taiwan. Haato was reading off her YT analytics which stated Taiwan as a percentage. Chinese nationalist fans began to hate on her so in an act of solidarity, Coco announced her YT analytic percentage on her daily Asacoco program. Because of this, many Chinese fans were enraged and started boycotting and calling for the termination of Kiryu Coco.
Now, this is a hard situation for all. Coco has been banned from streaming before, but luckily they were able to appeal to YT and get her on the platform again. However, unlike YT banning Coco, this is Cover Corp taking the initiative and suspending her. Haato is a casualty as well simply because she made a mistake. Obviously, many people are mad at Cover for not sticking up for their girls, especially after the Mano Aloe situation. However, we must realize that Cover has not only these girls to protect, but the ones in China as well.
Hololive CN is a minor branch, and only two of its members (Artia and recently Civia) have made content for overseas fans. If they lost fans and donations they would undoubtedly be ruined. Not to mention many JP girls who multi platform also make a lot of money from their Chinese viewers. Cover Corp has taken all this into consideration and did what they did.
Now, I’m not saying what Cover did was right, but it was the best way to keep all the girls safe. All we can do as fans right now is show our support, not only for Haato and Coco, but for all the other girls who might be affected.

People are demonstrating real goddamn ignorance about what happening to Coco and Haato. They just see Coco and Haato are on suspension and just fly into a rage without even considering the full context or don't even know why Cover is doing this. First of all, theres a whole CN branch on BilliBilli, which means, if China doesn't like Cover for even the PETTIEST shit that whole branch goes kaput and god forbid, maybe even backlash irl against the CN talents from the government. I'm sick of people completely forgeting or disregarding HoloCN. They are now in danger because of something 1000% out of their control. Coco and Haato did something, yeah, was it wrong? No of course not, but the CN girls have done literally NOTHING, and now here they are. Sure, maybe Hololive never should have entered China, but they are here now, they made the auditions, they built their audience, and to say "tough shit" to them isn't fair, especially if you want to say you care about Hololive. Why should they matter less then the main branch? Especially if this moment right now won't even hurt them in the long run. It was either the suspension or HoloCN.
To say "Cover doesn't care about their girls because they throw them under the bus" while they are trying to figure out how to not throw all of HoloCN under the bus is fucking stupid. Just admit you don't care for HoloCN and don't act like you know whats going on if you clearly don't.
Cover fucks up yeah, that copyright shit was on them, and they were too slow and ineffective against the rampant demontiziations that the girls suffered from 2019 to earlier this year. They are slow when it comes to action overall and they have a real bad habit of being shit when it comes to word choice. But tell me, the fuck are they supposed to do against one of the biggest Governments in the world? Give them the finger and let the government and those rabid antis tear the CN girls apart? This isn't like Blizzard AT ALL. You guys are being so fucking irrational its mind blowing. People just refuse to look at the context, in the last two months Cover has been faced with situations where the ENEMY has the leverage, and you want Cover to just say consequences be damned and let the members just take the brunt of it. Goddamn, god fucking damn just THINK, for the love of god just fucking THINK!

I’m considering turning a rather serious source (serious in the sense that it’s a fairly heavy real convo of two friends drifting apart in real time rather than something fictional; heard of the Johnswan vs Dream situation?) and spinning it into a thing with Yogiri and Artia from the now defunct and excommunicated CN branch for a quote. Wanted to run the possibility by you (and if you’d personally want it submitted as a quote) before I either follow through or forget.
Ah, yeah, I likely wouldn’t post that sort of stuff, mainly due to not wanting to make incorrect quotes out of graduated Hololive members (Aloe would be the only possible exception in this case, but even that would be extremely rare) - especially considering the whole drama leading to HoloCN graduating in the first place. And a source of that origin would probably be too serious for this silly comedian idol blog, regardless.
Pretty interesting, otherwise! Just not entirely suitable for this blog.

Chinese money isn't the only thing in line... ok, i might be paranoid and also on an anoxious state, but i think theres some hololive japanese staff and some vtubers in mainland china, so if cover does bad moves, this might turn into a possible hostage situation involving NATO and shit and also, they have their own CN virtual talents who might get harrasment or arrested. On other hand, the tought of WW3 starting bc of an anime girl saying Taiwan is insane, lol.
No offence, but China has been holding political hostages for years, I doubt the gravity of the situation for hololive would result in your scenario, however I do acknowledge there is nuance to this issue, as there always is with international business, but one must ask when does the hostage situation end if we’re always giving in? Because that’s what we want ultimately is freedom from China’s tyranny interfering with our Western values of freedom. Is the only reasonable option to give in when asked, because that’s what we’ve been doing for decades, I don’t see their dictatorial relationship with the world changing any time soon if so...

From what I can tell, it sounds like Artia announced that Hololive CN will be dissolving soon due to Cover’s increasingly negative reputation in China. However, Cover is at least giving them a lot of options for how the talent can move forward, even letting them keep the rights to their avatars.
ah, i heard something about that the other day, but i hadn’t heard any confirmation about it until now. while it’s saddening that they won’t be a part of hololive anymore, i’m glad that they aren’t graduating, and get to stay as who they are; if they get to keep their fanbases and characters, then that’s fantastic
i wish them well, and i hope that we can continue to support them going forward
