Been learning about animals again and I came across the Dunkleosteus. For some reason I think it's kinda cute so I wanna see how Desmond would act as that (and possibly some mauling-)
For those unfamiliar with how a Dunkleosteus looks like, here’s the estimate of its sizes and a reconstruction of how it could possible look like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It seems Dunkleosteus is most native to America (although it’s also possible there were some in Europe?) so a Dunkleosteus Desmond could easily make contact with Ratonhnhaké:ton but you know what would be fun?
If he makes contact with the Colonial Brotherhood before its fall instead…
He’s just living his best fish life, maybe wondering if there is any real reason why he became a fish? Maybe a big brain plan from Min-
He’s a fish.
Naaahhh.
Is it strange that he was bigger than most fishes?
Of course.
But he was simply going to ignore that.
Then… one day, Desmond’s calm peaceful (boring) waters suddenly grew noisy.
Okay, ‘suddenly’ was the wrong word to use.
The noises started far away but continued to come closer and closer until whoever were making those noises were right on top of him.
He heard the word ‘Assassin scum!’ and grew curious so he swam upwards.
Just to see what was happening, of course (or so he would tell himself).
Unfortunately, he had gotten so used to his new body and the peacefulness of the waters that he… accidentally! … smacked the little rickety boat with his fin while he was making his way to poke his head out of the water for a moment.
The Templar lost his footing while the Assassin managed to grab hold of the boat’s side after falling to their knees and Desmond (just so happened!) had his mouth opened and uuuhh…
He might have accidentally chomped off the Templar’s upper half???
Desmond felt so disgusted that he immediately threw it back up though!
And… it kinda sorta… fell back onto the ship where the Assassin remained staring at him with wide eyes and a pale complexion.
Understanding he must have traumatized the Assassin, he just… plopped back down to the deepest part of the waters…
… was there an underwater equivalent of a toothpaste around here?
.
.
.
A few months later, Desmond hears a few noises once more and swims closer to check what was happening.
This time, he made sure to not hit the boat with any part of his body nor did he swim above water to peek!
Hearing them clearly is fine at this point, considering the trauma he and that poor Assassin had to endure.
“Alright, here’s the first one! Careful not to rock the boat too much!”
“If you’re so worried, how about you come help!?”
“Someone has to keep the boat steady, ya fool!”
“Oh, and it has nothing to do with you vomiti-”
Their conversation was interrupted by a big splashing sound and…
Desmond stared as the corpse of a clearly dead… absolutely dead… man started to drop deeper and deeper into the waters.
“Why’s Miss Jensen having us drop these here anyway?”
“They’re all Miss Jensen’s family’s enemies. Remember? The ones she calls Templars?”
Another body dropped onto the waters, its empty eyes seemingly staring at Desmond as it slowly drop to the depths.
“Aye, I remember that. I’m asking why we traveled here to drop them?”
“I heard that fish saved Miss Jensen one time. They say she wants to feed the fish who saved her.”
Another body dropped and Desmond think it’s high time he just goes away, further away from all these corpses.
Some of the other fishes would probably eat them.
Maybe???
As Desmond began to swim away, he heard the men continue to converse, even though the one of them was slightly out of breath with all the corpses he was dropping (no wonder they were using a bigger boat than the one Desmond saw last time).
“That doesn’t sound like Miss Jensen.”
“Of course not. Miss Jensen says there’s a big fish here that likes to eat human so this is the perfect place to take care of the ‘remains.”
“Oh, that sounds more like her.”

If all the other Assassin’s Creed games had choosable Male/Female protagonists like Odyssey/Valhalla…
Assassin’s Creed
Altair or Maria
Whoever you don’t choose becomes the secret disciple of Robert De Sable. (Maria is kept secret because she’s a woman, Altair is kept secret because he’s Islamic)
Assassin’s Creed II/Brotherhood/Revelations
Ezio or Claudia
Whoever you don’t choose becomes the younger sibling that you protect.
Assassin’s Creed III
Ratohnhake:ton/Connor or Io:nhiote/Abigail
Whoever you don’t choose becomes a childhood friend of the player character who joins Kanen’to:kon on his raid and gets killed. The player character then names their daughter/son after them.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag
Edward or Caroline
Whoever you don’t choose stays behind in Wales while the player character pursues piracy.
Assassin’s Creed Rogue
Shay Cormac or Hope Jensen
Whoever you don’t choose stays loyal to the Brotherhood because they didn’t witness what happened in Lisbon.
Assassin’s Creed Unity
Arno or Elise
Whoever you don’t choose becomes the child of De La Serre while the player character becomes the child of Dorian.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate
Jacob and Evie
…. Nevermind, this one works as is.
Assassin’s Creed Origins
Bayek and Aya
Play as both, but you choose who is the main player character hunting the Order of the Ancients and who is the side player character helping Cleopatra.

I'm actually FASCINATED by the role of New York gangs in AC: Rogue. To me, a born-and-raised NYer, gangs are a recent development going back to the 1850s because frankly, that's as far as our oral histories usually trace; that's the earliest major wave of immigration. Most old New York families don't go further back.
The gangs weren't completely wiped out until the 90s, and by "wiped out," I mean they still exist, but the end result of government crackdown was that they no longer operate in the open the way they used to, and their methods of operation have changed. In the 1950s-80s, they extorted money via racketeering (what you see in movies when a gang member comes to a business and offers "protection" in exchange for money; reject it, and the member and his goons destroy your business or threaten your life) and had shootouts on the streets. Nowadays, it's more likely to be money laundering.
Needless to say, we can say with full confidence and a sense of black-and-white morality, that gangs are Bad, because of how much violence they encourage within the community.
BUT, there are certain things that aren't as black-and-white, because gangs usually exist to fill the needs of a society that the "legal" methods cannot meet. You feel powerless? You band together and intimidate other people, even if it becomes violent. Isn't that how Jacob formed the Rooks?
I want to sidebar about a great example of gangs filling unmet needs in what are shitty, harmful methods that would not be met at all otherwise: Human trafficking.
I'm not defending human trafficking by any means, but I would like to examine the conditions under which people are trafficked, their role in NYC, and the deeper implications in AC Rogue.
We know that smugglers are exploitative. The smugglers who lead North Koreans across the border into China and Mexicans into the United States demand huge sums of money from migrants (let's use "migrants" in this case since we're covering a lot of different groups who leave their homes for different reasons). These migrants pay this exorbitant amount to take a journey that they might not even live to see the end of.
However, we can understand that people who decide to take such a journey usually feel that this chance for a different life is better than staying in their current conditions. And that they are so desperate or at the end of their rope that this may be the best and only option. There is no other way to guarantee leaving for a better place.
The most glaring example of this in my mind is Sister Ping, who smuggled people into New York from her native province in China for years. She ran one of the biggest operations in the city; people died under her charge after paying basically what would have been a year's salary in the US. And yet, when Sister Ping passed, people flooded the streets of Chinatown to pay their respects. Because she granted them passage to the United States.
So yes. These things are bad, but people do end up using gang "services" because they could not acquire what they need otherwise.
But enough about Old New York. What about Old, Old New York? Like 1750s New York?
AC Rogue is not about the nuances of gang culture, so Hope Jensen's operations in New York outside of smuggling and experimenting on poison are pretty nebulous. Shay is supposed to be the complicated "hero" -- I would generously say anti-hero -- of Rogue who seeks to right the wrongs committed by Assassins. So he's presented as being in the right for crippling her supposed (we never get an actual confirmation, and Shay at this point only expects the worst out of the Assassins after their fuck-ups) plan to release poison gas on New York.
Poison gas aside, because of Shay's perspective, we are introduced to the gangs as criminals who extorted the Finnegans, but I wonder what other operations they ran? Were they also smuggling people into the city? Was Hope extorting businesses? Did she put money back into the city in other ways, ways we didn't see because we're looking at it through Shay's perspective? What were the needs that Old Old New York society that the gangs needed to fill?
We're arguably the hero for putting down criminals because of Shay and Monro, but I wonder if the formation of the Rooks in Syndicate would have looked very different if I were playing as a bystander or Assassin defector.
And morality debate aside, I'm very, very excited to look deeper into the Old Old New York gangs. They're like. The Grandfather of the Grandfather of the Godfather of the Modern NYC.

What if Desmond was reborn as Shay’s son and the same age as Connor
We have this idea where Desmond is reborn as Shay’s son but, in that one, we made Desmond the same age as Arno for that sweet, sweet angst.
For this one, we need to talk about the timeline for a bit.
Ratonhnhaké:ton is born in 1756 and Shay put his lot with the Templars the same year.
This means Desmond has to be conceived in 1755 before Shay leaves for Lisbon. Specifically: Desmond must be conceived months before November 1 1755. (If you want, we can put it his birth date as March 13 then Desmond would have to be considered around June 1755)
He returns to the homestead late 1755 to early 1756 and there was a lot of snow during the cutscenes during that time so we can say Winter Months (December ~ February)
Why is this important?
Because we have a prime ‘candidate’ for Desmond’s mother:
Hope Jensen.
Hope would definitely hide the fact that she’s pregnant and would never say that Shay was the father.
Perhaps it was simply a night of passion that they never talked about.
Maybe there was a sliver of ‘something more’ but it was postponed when Shay sailed to Lisbon.
Regardless, Hope would still join the hunt for Shay and she would watch as he ‘dies’ after failing to persuade him into returning the manuscript (maybe even hint on her current ‘situation’)
After that, she would never tell anyone who the father of her son was.
Desmond would be born in one of her gang’s hideout.
He would stay with her while she worked for the Brotherhood and he would know she’s an Assassin early on. Her gang would serve as both his bodyguards and his nannies when she’s away.
He would be 1 year and 8 months old when his mother died while he was taken away by her most trusted gang members, running away when she noticed Shay spying on them while she was talking to Liam. Desmond was nearby and was taken away while Hope slowly filled the warehouse with poisonous gas.
Desmond would then watch the fall of the Brotherhood and his mother’s gang as Shay hunted them down.
By the time Desmond is four years old, the only living gang members that he knows of are the ones who took care of him.
To him, Shay Cormac is the man who betrayed the Brotherhood and joined the Templars to hunt them all down.
The man who killed Desmond’s mother.
And now we have the setup for Desmond’s revenge plot (with a twist).
So, in this one, Desmond comes to Achilles around the same time Ratonhnhaké:ton does. Maybe he timed it that way, maybe it was fate. An important thing to note is that he has been making a name of himself by rebuilding his mother’s gang.
Of course, it’s less of a gang and more of a Brotherhood by its own rights. They stick to the shadows and follow the Creed and its tenets.
People see him as a genius youngster.
The ones who raised him after Hope died believed that he’s a prodigy like his late mother.
So he didn’t come to Achilles to ask for him to train him, he came there to learn about Shay Cormac and if he knows his current location.
This is where our plot can diverse into specific plot points:
(1) Desmond learns Shay is his father but Shay remains oblivious.
(2) Shay learns Desmond is his son but Desmond doesn’t know about this.
(3) They learn of their connection with one another in different ways.
For Desmond, either one of the people who raised him (maybe the ‘nanny’) knew the truth, maybe she was a servant of the Jensen family who came to care for Desmond, or Hope left a letter for Desmond to read when he was older if she died to one of the people who cared for him beforehand.
For Shay, it could be the good old ‘Hope Jensen had a son’, ‘said son is around this age’, Shay remembers they had sex around that time, and did the math himself. Or the Templars learned of the connection and informed Shay.
This would change how tragic this becomes, especially on Shay’s side.
Desmond’s side though?
He already had a bad father as Desmond Miles. His father being the one to kill his mother? Yeah, that just another nail in the coffin he would be carving for Shay Cormac, to be honest.
Shay though? If he learned that Desmond is his son, he would absolutely try to connect with him.
He would be the reason why Shay would return to the colonies during AC3.
So if you want Shay to be part of AC3 then Shay must know that Desmond is his son.
Or…
He learned that Hope Jensen’s son has been wrecking havoc with Haytham Kenway’s son and felt that it was his duty to ‘finish’ what he started.
.
Whatever situation they have, Desmond would be loyal to the Brotherhood. Not Achilles’ Brotherhood but the one he made himself. He’d support Ratonhnhaké:ton on his missions while suggesting Ratonhnhaké:ton join them.
Haytham would even comment on how their relationship is a bit similar to Haytham’s relationship with Shay but with the ‘roles’ reversed.
Desmond would clarify that he sees Ratonhnhaké:ton as an equal.
Desmond and Ratonhnhaké:ton would also bond over having bad fathers (although Ratonhnhaké:ton would remind Desmond that Shay Cormac doesn’t even know that he has a son so it was less ‘bad father’ and more like ‘bad Assassin’). In the end, Desmond would never betray Ratonhnhaké:ton and he has no memories of Shay being anything ‘good’ to him. Being his mother’s killer definitely soured their entire relationship before it even started.
So… it’s not going to have a happy ending.
.
.
.
Or, you know, Desmond’s mother could be some random woman Shay slept with and he found out about him after betraying the Brotherhood. He raised him away from his Templar business and Desmond becomes an Assassin anyway because of Ratonhnhaké:ton. This one’s angst would be the hesitation of fighting his father.
Pick your poison. XD

Love how Steven Piovesan (Shay's VA) is like, "Lol, Shay's in love with Hope Jensen a hundred percent, but she doesn't feel the same, and it's similar to Edward Kenway's simping feelings for Mary Read," because yes, what a fantastic interpretation.
It is very cute to think of Hope being Shay's first serious, knee-softening crush. I know he'd been around by the time the game starts (he and Liam talk about the Galway girls, these boys were def getting pulled), but his feelings for Hope might've been the first to grow out of constant proximity to someone he actually gets to know long-term.
Also, he just likes strong authority figures Haytham.
