Got high and watched How To Train Your Dragon last night and for some reason it was only then when I realized how heartbreaking Stoick’s line “With you doing so well in the ring... We finally have something to talk about” is
Like Stoick wants to connect with Hiccup. He’s tried so hard: taking him fishing, teaching him how to take down a dragon, even just living in the same house as his son, but they’re so vastly different that they can’t even hold a conversation. Until he hears about Hiccup’s successes in dragon training. And he’s so excited. He can finally connect with his son! But that is such new territory that Hiccup feels awkward and doesn’t answer. And Stoick realizes that even now, he doesn’t have and may never have the son he’s always wanted. So he tries one last thing: Giving Hiccup one last reminder of his mother. The only thing they have in common. And even that fails.
Thinking about Gobber and how he heard Hiccup say “I just want to be one of you guys” and then immediately went out and did something to give him the chance to try and be like them by convincing Stoick to put him in dragon training. The way Gobber looks out and cares for Hiccup is something so special to me.
I think it's really interesting that the whole first movie Stoick is defining what Hiccup 'isn't', and the movie kinda revolves around Hiccup figuring out what he 'is'
Like Stoick is always saying 'you're many things Hiccup, a dragon killer is not one of them', 'i knew who I was, what I had to become, Hiccup is not that boy', 'you're not my son', etc etc, he defines Hiccup by what he isn't until Hiccup shows him what he is
Does anyone else feel so immensely sorry for Hiccup when rewatching the scene in the second movie where Stoick and Valka are dancing??
Like the poor child never got to enjoy his parents being parents, never snuck down at night and caught his father and mother in the middle of a sweet moment, never heard them laugh together and then smile lovingly in each other's arms, never had the chance to climb in bed with Mom and Dad after a nightmare, never went to just enjoy a nice fire on a cold day, sitting between them.
And Hiccup, in this scene, is smiling so joyfully because he's happy for both of them. And he's happy that his family is whole again. Happy to see his dad so happy. Happy to feel like he has a mother and a father, happy to share such a special moment he's never been a part of before.
Like, can I just...sob? Am I allowed to sob sad tears at a scene that's supposed to be happy?
Speaking of ice-cream, this reminds me of that moment from RTTE
Gobber: "The sun, is a shiny potato, covered in drawn butter."
Snotlout: "And the moon is a scoop of ice cream."
This implies that over the course of three years, the twins introduced ice cream to the rest of the gang as well and it's one of the treats they sometimes enjoy
Here's something i dont think we talk about enough:
✨Berk is a small town✨
So some background for those who don't know what that means:
1. Everyone knows everyone. They know everything you do. All the time. If you think they don't knoa you, they know your parents or a friend of your parents or a friend of a friend if a friend. Everyone knows everything.
2. Because everyone knows everyone, you get a Reputation from a young age. And it never leaves. If you high achieve, you stay that way, If you're good at soccer you stay good, etc.
3. You either are dying to leave or never want to leave. This affects all of your relationships with literally everyone.
What does this have to do with Berk?
Well!
That means Hiccup has always been the screw up. In Riders and Defender he gets questioned all the time because he can't escape that.
And you know it put the fear of Odin in him when Stoic told him "there's nothing on this island he doesn't know about" because for the most part THAT'S TRUE
It also makes RTTE more understandable: Hiccup wants to LEAVE, he's a little tired of the screw up routine and it even takes his father until the latter part of RTTE to really earn his full respect. THIS ONLY HAPPENS IF YOU LEAVE A SMALL TOWN!
And in the movies you see Hiccup wanting to leave and how that affects his relationship with Astrid, his mom, and his dad.
In the 3 rd movie there are also moments where he is questioned and STILL TREATED LIKE A SCREW UP.
Pls add more if i missed anything!
TLDR; BERK IS A SMALL TOWN AND IT'S SUPER RELATABLE.
This may be a dumb question, but did Hiccup ever become chief of the Hairy Hooligans ? Because that was the main plot of basically the first half of the series.
If I remember correctly, he was never actually chief ? Obviously he became King of The Wilderwest at the end of book 12, but is it ever established what happens after Stoick inevitably died ?
Did the chiefdom go to Hiccup, because it couldn’t go to Snotlout anymore (RIP) so was it Baggybum ? Or did Hiccup just rule as chief of Berk AND King of The Wilderwest ?
I love Stoick always asking about Hiccup's day, like, the only two examples I can think of rn off the top of my head are in 'Live and Let Fly' and 'No Bark, All Bite' when at the end of the episode Stoick is like 'okay son why don't you tell me what you've been up to for the last few days' but it's so sweet
