in defense of mahoako episode 6

i see a lot of people saying "it's over" jokingly or not over azure's chapter not being adapted yet and the abdl stuff. i think that episode 6 was important not only because of kaoruko's character development, but because we get a very intimate look into haruka's feelings.

people age regress often because they feel overwhelmed with responsibility, and haruka is no exception. taking on a maternal role to overcompensate for her perceived inferiority and ditziness, she's still left feeling like the other girls are more capable than her.

then korisu forces her to age regress in the dollhouse, and her true colors come out. she's relieved, though a bit embarrassed, that she doesn't have to do anything to be taken care of and loved except to simply be.

she keeps up the team mom schtick by the end of the episode, but her time with korisu leaves her noticeably refreshed.

something that i like about this anime is that kink is used as an instrument to facilitate character development. utena gains confidence and ownership of her desires through magia baiser, kiwi in her relationship with utena is able to see herself as desirable and cute, korisu is able to cope with her absent parents by being a maternal figure for others in fantasy, and haruka is able to overcome her feelings of worthlessness by age regressing.

i haven't read the manga yet, but i hear there's something in store for sayo next week and i can't wait to see!!

Shows like Gushing Over Magical Girls present a "what if" scenario that people like me can use to re-examine how they grew up, and what things they wish they had learned at a younger age. Watching Utena's face flush with excitement as she discovers what turns her on feels extremely familiar to my own teenhood, and I wonder how differently things could have turned out if I'd been allowed to engage with and understand my own kinks back then like she does here. There's a difficult-to-explain sort of catharsis to it that can only be explored in fiction like this, and I think it's not only valid but extremely valuable to have this type of show for that reason.
