basically we take care of him and baby him a bunch, then the next day he wakes up to nobody in bed…
he walks into the living room, and sees m!reader cheer “merry christmas!” with the entire apartment decorated with a bunch of gifts for him, and they spend the day cuddling and just being cute overall?
(i finished the manga for the first time like a week ago and it’s absolutely killed me please repair my heart)

“Don't be too hard on him tonight. It's been kinda rough lately.” Manjiro's words repeated in your head the entire drive to and back from your destination. On the phone you gave a half-hearted, “Yeah I'll try.” and as your mind raced at the same speed of your motorcycle you recalled all of the recent events, deciding that Mikey makes a good point.
First Halloween, now Christmas, how many more holidays will become tainted with the blood from their gang activities? That's something you've never been able to quite understand, even with a brother in said gangs. How many times did he come back home dripping in blood, both his own and someone else's, only to be chewed out by you while you shakily bandage his wounds?
Tumblr media
You pull up to the church Mikey told you about. He's just sitting on the steps, most likely waiting for you after Mikey let him know that he had a ride coming.
At first, the words wouldn't come out. Neither snarky remark nor greeting made its way out of your mouth. You simply looked at him, bloodied and bruised. Just like Baji always was when he came home…
“You come here to stare at me or what?” Chifuyu's voice cut through the cold air, breath visible amongst the falling snow.
A deep sigh escaped before your reply, “Actually I'm your chauffeur. I'm afraid we're all out of limos tonight though, I hope this will suffice?” You joked, glancing down towards your bike. Chifuyu just rolled his eyes playfully at this. “Get on. Before you get frostbite.”
-
“You don't have to, you know. It's really late and you probably have work tomo-”
“I want to.” You cut him off, stopping what you were doing for a second. “I want to. What kind of shitty friend leaves you alone in that state anyways.” You didn't think he noticed, but you were wrong. He could read you very well sometimes, and he most certainly noticed the strain in your voice as you tried not to cry.
Chifuyu took a seat in the chair you pulled out for him, watching your body rush from his bathroom to his closet while you rounded up the necessary supplies. His first aid kit, some extra washcloths, a bowl of warm water, and a blanket. Placing everything on the dining table while you have him remove his shirt, large, visible bruises already blooming on his chest from whatever blows connected during the fight.
Gently touching the afflicted areas, you asked your friend with each touch, “How badly does this hurt?” Each answer being something along the lines of, “Ouch! A lot!”
“Do you feel like anything is broken?” At this Chifuyu shook his head and mumbled a 'no'. So you continued, soaking a washcloth in the water and wringing it out until it's only damp, dabbing at the biggest cuts on his torso first. Each time the warm fabric made contact with the open wounds, Chifuyu winced. You glanced up at him and whispered “sorry…” while trying to be even more gentle. It was obvious that something was on your mind, judging by the way you weren't practically bullying him for getting hurt so much. A part of him knew why though. He couldn't argue that he was thinking something similar to you tonight.
“Surprised you haven't scolded me for getting hurt.” Chifuyu prompted. Watching you with one eye closed in pain while you wrap some bandages around his chest.
“I'm doing it in my head.” At that, he scoffed. At least you still had some sass in you.
Next, you moved on to cleaning up his face. Chifuyu's cheeks were already a bit swollen from earlier, bloody and bruised just like his torso had been. Before this you carefully wrapped the blanket around his shoulders, telling him that he needed to keep warm after being out in the snow for a while. Once again, Chifuyu noted how gentle you were tonight. Even more so than usual as your hands lingered on his arms for a minute, a bit of your body heat seeping through the fabric while they did.
“Hmph. All this and you still managed to win, huh?” You lightly teased. Chifuyu winced again when you cupped his cheeks.
“Of course we did. Even though we were at a disadvantage from the start.”
While administering your first aid, you prompted your friend to continue, “Oh yeah? How so?”
Chifuyu became more animated while complaining, “Well for starters that dick Hanma beat me up and then tied me up before the real fight even began!” he exclaimed. “Kisaki planned on betraying us all along. Which we probably should have seen coming from a mile away... but Takemitchy thought teaming up with him was our best option, so I agreed to co-operate...”
As he went through the whole story, giving Kisaki, Hanma, and Taiju Shiba increasingly meaner nicknames, Chifuyu gradually blew off the steam left over from the night's conflict. By this point it was well past 2 a.m and you were both exhausted. He offered to let you sleep over and you accepted.
The two of you had spent the night at each other's places many times before, along with Baji and some of their other friends from Toman. So sleeping in the same bed didn't bother either one of you. Especially at such a late hour and after the stressful events of the night. You really just wanted to sleep it off.
Falling asleep came easily, even with Chifuyu's light snoring (which you are totally going to tease him about in the morning). Waking up came easily too. Too easily, in fact... You woke up only 3 hours later unable to fall back asleep. After letting your mind race for a couple minutes, and lots of fidgeting later, you decided to just get up and do something. Literally anything is better than laying in bed all antsy.
Looking around Chifuyu's apartment brought to your attention how unfestive it was. He did at least put the Christmas tree up, but it was barely decorated and the rest of the place looked so... Grinch-like. You recall the festivities that you and your brother got up to in years past, almost always spent with friends after some time with the family. The laughter mixed with 'Christmas dares' that people like Chifuyu, Draken, and you would always end up flustered from.
Since you had some time you figured “What's the harm in livening up the place?” Surely his Christmas decorations weren't buried too deep in the closet?
-
It's cold. Yeah it is the end of December but, it's like, really cold this morning... Chifuyu thought to himself upon rousing awake. The pain in his limbs and his chest reminded him of last night's happenings. He recalled the fight, the punches he took, celebrating Toman's victory over Black Dragon, and lastly... Chifuyu remembered you. Remembered how distracted you were while taking care of him. Something was off. You never once yelled at him to 'be careful, idiot' or any of the things you usually yelled. Your touch was somehow even more gentle than before too. It was... strange, though not unwelcome.
Chifuyu's hand reached over to shake you awake only to find an empty space. The space where you were last night. Oh.
“Tch. Couldn't wait to ditch me, huh? You're always moving too fast, y/n.” He muttered to himself, running a bandaged hand through his hair before slipping out of bed and trudging to the living room.
His feet carried him across the floor until...
“MERRY CHRISTMAS, MATSUNOOO!!”
Until a very loud voice jolted him fully awake. Clutching a hand over his chest, Chifuyu shouted in retaliation, “Are you trying to give me a heart attack?! What the hell?!?!”
To which you only laughed, “Yes! That's my job and you know it!” Chifuyu couldn't decide whether he was happy that you were back to your usual, sarcastic self or not... Regardless, he did say thanks.
“I made breakfast by the way. I wasn't sure what you'd feel like so I just cooked something simple... and my special french toast.” You added. A statement that caused your friend's eyes to sparkle at the mere mention of. After fixing up a plate for each of you, you sat down by the properly decorated tree. Chatting about how you pulled off decorating his entire living room without waking him up, reminiscing about Christmases past, and your plans for the rest of the day. All before casually sliding a gift box towards him.
“What's this?”
“Open it, silly.”
Carefully removing the blue ribbon and the lid of the box revealed a picture frame with a photo of Chifuyu, Baji, and yourself from a summer trip last year.
“Y/n...” Chifuyu whispered, staring at the photo in his hands. His eyes scanned over it again and again, taking in all of the details fondly.
“I thought it would be nice to have. Knowing my brother I'm sure he wouldn't want us sulking over his death. He'd want us to remember the happy times, and to move forward and make more good memories.” While you already felt the tears coating your own eyes, it was Chifuyu who cried first. Though he swears it's just some dust, definitely not tears!
“Yeah, uh-huh, sure. Whatever, there's more under the tree. I just wanted to give you that one first.”
You watched as your friend laid the picture frame down so that he could tackle-hug you to the ground, hurting both of your ribcages at once. “Oof– Alright, alright! You're welcome! Don't hurt yourself, you're still injured!” you chastised.
And he laughed that precious laugh of his that always brought a smile to your face. “Sorry, Doc. Got a little too excited there! But seriously, thank you, y/n. That was a thoughtful gift.”
“You're welcome. Now c'mon, open the rest!” Chifuyu nodded, smiling as he felt you pull him into your lap while he opened another gift.

Turning into a fox was never part of your life. That was until you turned 18. Now the first time it occurred was when it was midnight and you were showering after finishing up some pending work.
While taking a shower you shrunk to the size of a small red fox to which, you screamed. Your older sister barged in, saw you were a wet fox and started cackling like it was a normal sight. She chortled her way out of the bathroom and called mother who also roared with laughter.
And what worse was that your situation seemed to be something expected and you weren't aware of it—
"could someone please tell me what the fuck is going on!?"
They fell silent before screaming with even more laughter, saying something along the lines of "her voice changed,"
Eyes lined with tears from snickering, your mother began to tell you about your family's tradition (as she called it) and how they were cursed with turning into a small red fox after the age of 18.
The confusing part was that your older sister, who was 22 had never turned into a fox. "but sister never turned into a fox?"
"oh," Stated your mother upon realizing that she had to word her next words appropriately to prevent you from whining.
But of course, your sister went ahead and demolished those plans by announcing, "oh only one family member has the curse and passes it down, and lucky me, I was exempt from it."
"then when does it go away!" It was too much to handle you were sobbing and whining, much of what your mother had attempted to prevent but which your sister didn't follow along with.
"the way to break the curse," spoke your mother, with a hint of mysteriousness underlying her speech, much of that of a narrator.
"is a true loves kiss blah blah blah," your sister Interrupted with the most disinterested tone, suspending all the built-up suspense?
"forget it mother, you know how helpless yn is when it comes to her love life,"
"don't say that," nagged your mother as she stepped out of the bathroom and got back to watching her series while your sister entered her room to presumably continue with work.
That left you, a small little red fox, to figure out everything else by yourself.
How were you, the one with a miserable love life, supposed to break free from this "curse"— and who in their right mind thought it'd be funny for you, the one with no bitches, to be the one with this irking curse and not your sister, the one that plays with many hearts? Whoever it is, you hope to sue them if possible.
Well, at least you had a clear outline of what and what not to do. One, you couldn't stay out past 12 am or boom you'd turn into a fox on sight and that would be a disaster.
But two, if you didn't stay out, how were you ever going to meet someone for that true love kiss (not that you had high hopes for yourself in the love area)? Though it hadn't been long since you turned legal you despised drinking and anything that has to do with it.
You grumbled your way to your bed, your short legs and petite figure making it an awfully difficult task for you to even climb into bed. Managing to jump onto your table and hop in bed as a fox.
It was extremely different, alright.
The next morning you were human again much to your surprise. You'd hate to admit but you'd gotten used to being a small little fox in a short while. But being human was much better.
You grab your phone and check your texts since you couldn't answer them yesterday night due to your predicament (that button nose of yours as a fox did not support typing)
yun there's a sleepover at sunoo's!! i'm going and you're coming with me.
This cannot be happening. You read her text a total of 5 times but the words on the screen still shocked you. You knew Yun, she'd never back down when she's determined, and that includes getting you to attend parties and events beyond your will.
An excuse wouldn't work, but it was worth a shot.
And it did not work. You were dragged to Kim Sunoo's sleepover alas.
Yun was pretty social, knowing almost the entire mass of people that flocked to the so-called "sleepover", it was a party. You'd heard of Kim Sunoo quite a lot before, many catching crushes while others simply enjoyed his presence.
He was a heartthrob for sure, but he was the last one you'd expect to have a chance with. Even more so with your newly acquired condition of turning into a fox at midnight.
Now speaking of your predicament, you plan to stay till 11 pm and take the bus back home with the excuse that your mother wanted you home. Frankly, she did not because she wanted you to experience the drama that came with turning into a fox right in front of someone. Fun, isn't it.
You could wallow into tears but your problem was that it was 8:30 pm and you had no one to talk to, yun disappeared from your line of sight and you were sleepy.
A nap wouldn't hurt?
Oh, how wrong you were.
You jolt awake at 11:52 pm to see everyone asleep. Probably the gods decided to help you out for once since it'd be easier to leave with most asleep and especially with yun passed out if the floor from drinking, you guess.
But where had you placed your phone?
And so your hunt began, racing against the clock that ticked faint as you struggled to walk around with the number of people passed out on the carpeted floors. You remember placing your phone on the island in the kitchen while drinking some flavored punch earlier.
You tiptoe your way to the kitchen, carefully grabbing your phone up and off the counter, the screen lit up, the time flashing 11:59 pm. Screeching internally, you were ready to make a run outside the door solely to see someone standing right beside you through your peripheral vision.
You jump, gluing your back to the counter as you stare wide-eyed at the one only, kim sunoo with a glass of water in his hand. Your frantic eyes peer at your phone as it ticks to 12:00 am and poof, you turned into a small red fox right in front of him with your phone clattering to the ground.
A hand flies to his mouth, clutching it in disbelief as you panic and utter, "it's not what you think this is—" but then he starts talking to himself, "I must be crazy, totally crazy— I couldn't have possibly seen a human into a fox and that fox that can SPEAK?! And it sounds just like yn and the human looked like yn too—" He was hyperventilating, placing the glass back on the counter and slowly backing away as he spoke to you, "there, little fox, don't come any closer, stay right where you are,"
"you're not crazy, my condition is—"
"IT'S TALKING AGAIN OH MY GOSH JAY WAS RIGHT I'VE LOST MY MARBLES" He was whispering shouting, exasperated.
"no, just let me finish—" "wait why is yn trapped in a fox?" "i'm not trap—"
"oh I know how to free you," He spoke, gravitating towards the massive shelf and pulling out a book with the foreign inscription written on the cover.
"come with me," He states, his head busy buried in the book, an arm wrapping around your tinted fox body and picking you up into his arms. "no don't— at least get my phone—"
He walked up to his room, entering inside with you and your phone in hand, flipping through the pages till he found what he was supposedly looking for. "ah! found it,"
"what does it say," You inquire, peering your head to the right to see Sunoo. He looks at you and is slightly stunned, "don't do that it's creeping me out,"
"do what?" "turn your head and speak to me," "huh? it's not like I asked to be turned into a fox!"
"but that's what it says here," He shows you the contents of the book, bringing it closer to your fox body that was still carried in his arms. "how can you even read foreign script,"
"my granny taught me," "oh, well read it out for me then,"
"it basically says when a human does a wrongdoing and God deems it unacceptable then the person's entire bloodline is cursed of turning into an animal and in your case, it's a small little red fox,"
"how this any of this not shock you?"
"oh I got over the shock, I remember my granny showing me all kinds of stuff when I was a kid so this is second nature to me," he said nonchalantly like he didn't freak out and start whisper shouting to himself.
"you're saying that like you didn't freak out minutes ago," You murmur, scoffing. "do want help or not?" "fine."
He examines the book further, only for the next page to be torn out, to which he gasps, "looks like the next page was torn out..."
"yeah I can see that I'm not impaired of my vision when I turn into a fix you know," you remark snobbily, "now let me down, I'll just go home and deal with this myself,"
"you sure you want to go home a fox? you could get fox-napped," he stated with a shrug, putting you down on his bed, shuffling around his desk to place the book down. "there's no such thing as fox-napping, don't be dramatic, sunoo,"
"i'm just looking out for you, plus how will you carry your phone home, you'll crack the screen if you try," he expresses, referring to your phone in his hand that he shook in his hand to emphasize his words.
He was right, how would you get your phone with your paw?
"it's fine just sleep here and then leave in the morning," he said, pointing to his bed as he took a seat on his bed. "you want me to sleep here?!"
"yeah why not, you're a fox not a human right now, what's the harm in that?" "but—" "overruled."
He places you beside him, falling to slumber with you beside him as a fox.
It was the morning after the chaotic wreck of events, and you were snoring. Snoring so loud that sunoo woke up, disrupted from his sleep. Groaning he forced his eyes open with a sough and was unexpectedly met with you fast asleep beside him, as a human.
He screeched, forgetting the rundown of last night.
Jerking awake, you see a just as shocked sunoo staring right at you with his wide fox-like eyes. You mimicked the same surprise as you jump awake to see sunoo laying right beside you.
"what are you- oh yeah," you then flash through the flight of memories and found yourself slightly embarrassed. It had been only two days since you acquired this strange curse and yet someone, namely, kim sunoo, knew you were cursed with turning into a small cute red fox.
He recovered from his shock, sitting up and peering at you with inquisitive orbs. "what? is there drool on my face-" you ask in a panic, beginning to wipe your face of any drool causing sunoo to chuckle before shaking his head in denial to your previous query.
"no no, it's just that you're so different yet so similar as a human compared to when you're a fox," "there's a similarity?!" you inquire, offended that you, a grown human had similarities to a red fox.
"yeah," he says with a grin painted over his front, "both are cute."
At that you officially lost your mind, you pinched the skin of your leg to differentiate whether it was a dream or a reality. Kim Sunoo just complimented you, you who has had zero luck in the love section while everyone else seemed to be hitting it off.
"oh you turned a red fox again," he laughed, halting his speech, "your face is so red." The urge to dig a hole in the ground and stick your head into it like an ostrich was growing, much like your embarrassment.
The door clicks open to reveal Yun in a disoriented state, seemingly searching for something; Oh, she's searching for you.
Your revelation was seconds late as she slaps a hand to her mouth as her jaw craned open enough for a cookie to fit vertically. "You both..?! Since when, how did I not know, this is so—"
"no, I swear this is not what it looks like," you desperately attempted to save yourself and the feline-eyed who looked quizzically at yun.
"this is what it seems like, your friend over here was fast asleep in my room before I even got here after the party; or was it a sleepover? either way, I was too tired to get your friend out my bed and downstairs so I just accepted faith and succumbed to slumber,"
Was that the worst excuse you've heard? Possibly. Were you glad he didn't tell her about your condition? Extremely.
Well, at least it worked. un wasn't the brightest when it came to liars (except you, which is pretty much given since you can't lie for shit) but that was a close one.
Yun unsuspectingly left without a word after her mouth formed an O in understanding and went on to excuse herself while wiggling her eyebrows towards you.
You hear sunoo sigh of relief and turn to him with a quizzical look that said, 'why-are-you-so-relieved-when-my-life-was-on-the-line' look.
Raising his arms in defense, he probes, "what? I covered for you," You shake your head in dismissal, and move on to the question that is pondered in your head.
"speaking of yesterday, do you happen to know anyone that could've known the contents of the next page?"
"ah yes, my grandma would know,"
"then shall we pay your grandmother a visit, she must miss her grandson dearly," you state, batting your eyelashes playfully while sunoo chuckled and agreed.
"why are you so late, the train would've left, you know," sunoo utters with a hint of underlying mockery whole rolling his eyes. "i had to explain everything to my sister, only for her to hysterical laugh at me— so yes I went WWE on her," you reply, a sinister smile playing across your lips.
"should've turned into a cherished cat," murmured sunoo, continuing to look out the window, fondly gazing at the scenery. The sunlight peeked in through the same window, falling on sunoo. He gapped out the window while you gapped at him.
Words picked up as both engaged in a casual conversation, with laughter and occasional embarrassment. The warm feeling in your chest didn't flicker once while you spoke to him, but you didn't know if that warm sensation would harvest anything good out of it.
You both got off the train, sunoo leading while you trailed among the crowd. Soon you'd lost sight of the boy, internally panicking, reaching for your phone. But then a hand clutched onto yours, your orbs meeting a hazelnut gaze, who softly looked at you.
"don't let go of my hand,"
You glad that he led you, the previous fears that he'd see the pinkish tint on your cheeks that gradually spread to your ears. You had to get ahold of yourself, he was merely helping you out of pity.
Catching a taxi to his grandmother's house that was quite far from the station, the span of the drive would last for more than an hour, stated sunoo. You curtly nod, unable to form sentences from your flustered figure.
Your eyes drifted to the familiar hand that held yours, longing to feel the same heat from it.
Sunoo had fallen asleep not long after getting into the vehicle. His eyes had fluttered shut but his palm was empty in the middle seat, possibly searching for yours.
Had you taken initiative to hold his hand, there were possibilities he could wake up and see you holding his which would put you in a difficult situation.
Maybe he heard your worrying thoughts, leaning on the further while grasping your hand which wasn't far from his, clasping it in a warmly loose hold.
A smile grazed your lips, and the unfamiliar feeling of heat rushing to your cheeks surged through you as your heart thumped, reverberating in the shells of your ear.
And then the realization hit. You were blushing because of kim sunoo.
Now what good would come of this? The boy who saw you have your little mystical transformation and he also happened to be someone who could another cure to it.
The feline eyed knew too much, yet now he also was the cause of your erratic heart palpitations.
“welcome, welcome! If I’d known that you’d be coming earlier I would have cleaned up more,” said sunoo's grandmother who panned the door wide open with a similar grin beaming at you and sunoo.
“i hadn't even knocked on the door—” sunoo said, partly speechless.
"i don't need you to knock on the door to know you're here, boy,” she responded, a triumphant smile blooming past her lips as she ushered you both inside the homely space.
“did you both eat yet?”
A shake of heads sent his grandmother to what you assumed was the kitchen and back with plates full of food. Sunoo seemed rather happy to see his grandmother and even happier at the food.
Before eating the piping hot food in front of you, you nudged Sunoo, successfully gaining his attention, eyes pointing to his bag which contained the book of gibberish (to you, at least). He understood, reached for the bag, and handed the book to his grandmother who seemed to hum in amusement.
“a red fox? interesting,” she mumbled, flipping through the pages only to stop at the torn one, eyeing it up and down. “you want a cure?” she inquired, meeting your gaze as you glanced up at her.
A cough followed your confusion, you haven't spoken a word of your curse yet she already knew..? Had sunoo mentioned it to her when he called to let her know that we’d be stopping by?
Reading you like a book, she chuckled, “i can tell by a look, darling,”
Now she was reading your mind with a flick of a finger. It increased your hope for a cure besides the one your mother mentioned it was and it didn't seem likely to happen to you anytime soon so you opted for the latter.
You clear your throat, skipping to the main reason you were here with sunoo, “is there another cure?” you question skeptically, hoping for a yes from her. She thinks for a while, pulling a poker face, making it impossible for you to read her face.
“frankly speaking, no,” she probs, crushing your hopes for an affirmation, merely pulling a small smirk, “but, there is a cure right beside you,”
You tilt your head to the left and turn to the right, eyes voicing confusion as you stare at sunoo’s own puzzling orbs with his eyebrows deeply furrowed from the same confuzzlement you both were experiencing.
“anyways, eat up before the food gets cold,” she continues, grinning like she didn’t just confuse the two of you even further, walking to the kitchen, leaving you with silence.
You think over and over again, pondering what sunoo’s grandmother could be referring to. The food traveling down your throat hitches, attempting to make up the distance back up as you choke realizing what his grandma was talking about.
Sunoo blinks, still lost as ever, “did you finally get it?” he asks, wanting to know how he could help you.
“maybe..? don’t think too much of it, it's nothing.”
Is she really referring to the true love kiss your mother previously mentioned…If that was what she was referring to, sunoo was too far out of your reach in that way. Sunoo was a great guy but he’d never reciprocate your feelings in that kind of situation. But what if he did? cried a voice in your head.
You wouldn’t know till you tried, would you? The voice continued, hypnotizing you to follow along, you’d give it a try.
“one of you can take the guest room or both of you–” she cheekily said, sharing a quick glance at sunoo and you while leading you both to the room where sunoo remained by the door frame while you stepped inside.
“make yourselves at home,” and with that, she left. Sunoo’s eyes drifted to you as he said, “you can take the bed, i’ll take the couch,” and without another word, he turned on his heel to leave.
“wait!” you catch up to him and wrap your fingers around his wrist, clasping his wrist to stop him from leaving. “i won’t need the whole bed anyways,” you conclude, the floor suddenly looking rather intriguing, gluing your eyes as the silence protruded.
“oh, alright,” he replied with uncertainty, “i’ll go wash up then,” he completes, flashing a small smile your way and heading out the room. Once your sight is clear of the boy, you thump your forehead to the wall and stay there, rethinking your decision and how abruptly you mentioned it.
You lie on the bed checking the time that slowly ticks by, almost ticking you into a state of drowsiness but the sound of sunoo barging in amidst the peace laid a small blanket over you. You jolt, snapping your eyes to the door, widen in shock.
“oh, sorry did I scare you,” he asks, laughing lightly while entering the room, shutting the door behind him. His smile stretches in genuine happiness, putting one onto your front, thinking he’s rather cute when he smiles.
“you have a pretty smile,” you murmur, not comprehending that sunoo heard you, his head turning to you with his eyes joining his smile. “thank you,” he responded while sitting beside you on the bed and joining you as you continued to lay down like a log tired and extremely full of the delicious food his grandmother cooked.
You turn to face him, inching closer before saying, “last two minutes of me being a human I guess,” you express, swiping your face with your palm to which he chuckles, patting your head that sent a surge of butterflies to emerge, “goodnight yn,”
“goodnight,” you reply, feeling yourself shrink to a ball. Sunoo marveled at the transformation rather skeptically, “did you just shrink?” he asked, eyeing your now red fox self while you muttered a yes.
“you look adorable right now but I prefer you as a human,” “why is that,” you ask, feeling brave.
“because you're pretty,” he finished, his eyes maintaining contact with your beaded fox eyes, he didn’t shy away nor blush, he looked straight ahead with a smile. What was this sentiment, and why does it feel so warm?
“ay, are you flustered now? cute,” he said, pulling your small fox-bodied self onto him, a hand running down your head in a pet. You looked at him wordlessly, having a revelation that you indeed liked the boy.
Entering the room as soundly as possible, she was met with the sight of you sleeping flat on your stomach with your face buried in the pillow while he slept on his side, his leg fling over you and his arm resting on your back.
It wasn’t the image she'd expected to see but it brought a smile to her lips as she walked through the creaking floorboards and shook both awake. You stirred awake, turning your head to the side to look.
Met with the sight of sunoo asleep beside you, sending you jerking awake. “Wake him up and come down to eat breakfast,” she said, exiting the room. You resumed looking at sunoo, finding his face pretty when he was asleep.
“he sleeps like an angel,” you say slowly, admiring his beauty while his leg and arm are still flung onto you, not that you minded.
“you think?” came a sleep-heavy voice, removing his leg with his arm still laid over your back as he moved closer to snuggle to the warmth you radiated. “yeah,” you responded, unsure where all this confidence was coming from.
You watch as his body rises and falls from the breaths he took. You felt bold throwing your arm over him and closing your eyes in hopes of not chickening out and moving away. His response to it was rather heart-warming as he returned the embrace, clutching on to you as you turned to the side to embrace him properly.
“we should probably go and eat,” you express, interrupting the serene calmness as you both remained snuggled up against each other. “5 more minutes,” he drawls, emitting a laugh from you.
You both head to the kitchen to see his grandmother hard at work cooking, deciding to help you both partake, making things more of a mess than helping, getting yourselves benched to sit still in the common room.
You sit down obediently as sunoo follows along till he begins roaring with laughter with you following suit not long after, finding the whole ordeal all too funny. His grandmother walks inside with her hands with the dishes, placing each on the table, “eat up, it's going to be another six hours till seoul,”
With that, she left you both to devour the food served which you both did soon set off for the road with heart-wrenching goodbyes as you heard sunoo get an earful to visit more with his sister which left him to comply.
Seating in the back with sunoo in the taxi was peaceful, falling quiet staring out the window. Hours later, you both arrive at an unknown location and you turn to sunoo with a big question mark written all over your face.
“just follow me,”
You mentally shrug and follow the boy not wanting to get lost, racing his footsteps that are imprinted on the sand. It was a beach in the middle of seemingly nowhere but it was a breathtaking sight, especially since the sun was beginning to set.
He sits by the ledge of a small brick wall, waiting for you to sit beside him. “so, what do you think?”
“it's so calming,”
“yeah, we stopped by at the perfect time, the sun's setting now,” you couldn’t help but feel your heart skip a few beats as you turn to him and back to the sea in front of you so quick to get whiplash.
The heat rushes to your cheeks and spreads to your ears. “do you have any concerns?” he questions, gaining your attention as your eyes drift to him as he turns to meet yours. “except the obvious, nothing, really.”
“didn't you say it was a curse passed down for many generations? Then your mother or aunt would know a possible cure, seeing as they don't turn into small red foxes with you. wait, they don't, right?” he inquires, eyes wide.
“no, it's not chronic and there is a cure,” “that is?”
You sigh, turning to him with a hardened gaze, “a true love’s kiss, as cheesy as it sounds.” you hear a snort from him as he clears his throat to say, “you're saying we came all the way here, for another cure that wasn’t there, to begin with? Then this is an easy fix.”
“how? i'm practically a hopeless romantic,”
“you're joking?” he probes, merely to meet with silence. “you’re not?!” “don’t rub it in!” you whine, burying your face in your palms.
“you don't have a boyfriend?” “no!”
“have you ever had one?” “yes, in like grade 4,” you reply, embarrassed earning a snort from sunoo
“how has no one ever dated you, i’d totally date you,” he says rather seriously with a huff, looking straight ahead. You turn to with shook-ridden orbs glowing under the setting sun. “then why don’t you,”
It was his turn to look at you surprised, “w-what?” The sky was painted crimson with hues of saffron and orchid bleeding through as the big ball called watched over the couple, setting in as the sea seared with mixed colors of red and blue.
You’d never been the confident type and definitely not the type to make a move first, but this one time you decided to push your luck and give it a try. You lean closer to him, pressing a small kiss to his lips that set the gears in his head to a fuss.
You lean back with a flushed face, looking the other way as sunoo froze, malfunctioning. It was merely a peck, yet the softness of his lips sent you into override as you pulled away, wanting to turn into an ostrich instead of a red fox so you could stick your head in the sand and hide.
Sunoo begins chuckling, “i don’t that’ll be enough to cure you, y/n” he states. “are you saying…”
“yes, but first we have a curse to cure. Unless you found turning into a fox appealing, that is”
You turn to him, unable to maintain eye contact, closing your eyes, “how about another time–” and there was kim sunoo, the one you found out of your reach, pressing a light kiss to your lips.
“well, that was an experience,” he concluded, standing up and stretching a hand to you that you accepted, the sun now set with the dark blanket of the night taking over.
You push open the unlocked door to see Yun seated with your older sister on the couch with your mother placing a bowl of popcorn enough to feed 6 people on the table as she joins them on the couch, continuing to laugh at something on the tv.
You sigh as they don't recognize your presence, the grip on your hand becoming increasingly tighter, you look back in reassurance, step inside with the figure crouching behind you, and announce, “i come bearing a boyfriend!”
The silence drags as you hear the crickets chirp, the trio beginning to burst into a fit of laughter as you drag the figure beside, who was kim sunoo, eliciting a yelp from yun. “what?! You were gone for a day, and you're telling me I don't get to see you transform into a red small fox with my own eyes,” “yeah,”
“but I was going to stay over to see you transform—” “who even–”
“she’s cured, courtesy of me, of course,” sunoo announces, joining the small trio by the couch leaving you to sigh and murmur, “i wanted to sleep,”
“who wants to see videos and pictures of y/n as a small red furry?” your sister shouts, as the room erupts into a “me!” you were being collectively bullied, not that it wasn’t fun.
Turning into a fox wasn’t so bad after all which earned you a boyfriend, though your best friend was stolen by your sister. It was alright, you’d make do with sunoo.

I just finished some desperate glory the other day and I'm literally wondering the same thing. on the one hand there was that one offhand line about kyr thinking about yiso in the context of, like, finding people attractive--but then also didn't yiso say in a different part that they were possibly twelve or fifteen or twenty bc they didn't know how to do the math for another solar system?? like... if they are the love interest it is Weird to sprinkle in the possibility that they could be twelve, yk? also, unrelated, I kind of feel like the ending would've been more satisfying if they'd both actually died. it was such whiplash in the last couple of pages and the resolution felt cheap to me. the audiobook narrator was great though.
See I took that to mean they were 12 in their own years but 15 or 20 in Kyr's. Kyr is 18 at the beginning and the weird hand kissing doesn't happen until they've both aged by several years. To me based on the rest of the novel it's also pretty clear yiso is not intended to be a young child. But that whole character relationship did confuse me and the awkward wording in some instances did not help!
anyway you're probably right about the ending but tbh? by the middle I'd already decided it was better to turn my brain off and hope the plot twists kept me entertained and in that respect the ending fully lived up to my expectations
