I know it's a thing on here to treat ppl who are unamused by horoscope shit as wet blankets but frankly there is something uniquely aggravsting abt telling another person your star sign in order to participate in what you assume is lighthearted convo and watching a respected adult peer actively adjust how they feel about you as a person in real time bc of the day of the year you happened to be born on

waitttttt what are your thoughts on common people 👀👀👀
Well my thoughts per usual are not very enlightened lol. But! I feel the song has…friction to it, like it’s not a totally straightforward nice lil ode of back-home wistfulness. Every time I hear it, the phrase “act like you’re one of us” clangs and gives the whole thing a more complex undercurrent. Like ‘wait, what? why?’
I like that it’s not totally clear who is saying this line. Depending on when I listen, I could understand it being Louis speaking to the listener, or the hometown talking to Louis/others…or tonight when I heard it I thought of it also as the world at large telling Louis what he would need to do to make it big (“you’ll hear strangers singing your name/if you act like you’re one of us”). So needing to fit in whether it’s growing up or trying to make your own way. [This is a tangent but since I first heard this song I think of Tan France speaking about his experiences growing up in Doncaster and how he had a really traumatic time.] Anyhoo maybe it’s more clear-cut than this but that’s my vibe. And I do think Louis is skilled at being intentionally ambiguous. It really is a lovely and interesting track and he sounds great on it.
PS I remember there being a good post by @ialwaysknewyouwerepunk about the messaging of this song…I will see if I can find that too.

3, 10 and 13 for the book asks!
ahhh tysm for asking! I’m putting this under a read more bc i got a lil out of control lmao
3. what are your top 5 books of the year?
ok I’m planning on making a separate post w my top 10 2022 releases so consider this list like. my top 5 books I read this year that were NOT released in 2022. if that makes sense. in no particular order:
-the inheritance trilogy by nk jemisin—putting an entire series as one book may be cheating BUT. also me recommending jemisin is very like. hey, did y’all know that one of the most acclaimed sf writers of our generation is uhhh….really fucking good? but oh my god she is.
-the book of atrix wolfe by patricia a mckillip—was reading this when I found out mckillip had passed away, which made for an extra emotional experience. her writing is so, so beautiful, and has had such an impact on the way I write (ok, try and mostly fail to write)/think about fantasy. this is a great standalone from her, about ghosts and curses and the magic of kitchens.
-the singing hills cycle by nghi vo—this is just like. everything I want from a series of linked fantasy novellas. if that makes sense. Like I’m such a sucker for books where the frame narrative is someone going around collecting stories, and the stories vo tells are so real, feel deeply embedded in history and mythology, love and rage. and, ofc, also very very queer and hot (who among us has not wanted to be semi-abducted by beautiful morally ambiguous tiger lady).
-ghost summer by tananarive due—one of the things I love abt due is her stories work SO well read aloud—levar burton’s podcast featured one of the stories from this book and it was such a good ep, I really recommend seeking it out. listening to her read at an event I attended a couple years ago was also amazing—the entire audience was like so tense and so with her for the entire story, it was great. another thing I love about this collection is that at the end of each story she gives some context around the writing of the story—it’s fun! I think more authors should do this w their short story collections!
-peter darling by sa chant—yes it is embarrassing that it’s taken me this long to read this. but I did! finally! and I did cry !
ok actually going through the list I cried while reading 4/5 of these despite the fact that none of them are like. stereotypical cry-y books. which could mean 1) i love books that make me cry or 2) i just cried a lot this year. probably both
10. what was your favorite new release of the year?
gonna say it’s a tie between the daughter of doctor moreau by silvia moreno-garcia and the hurting kind by ada limon. I just finished the hurting kind so that might make me a lil biased but limon is one of my all time favorite poets and this collection peeled me like an orange so ! (is that a phrase? is that something ppl say? icr)
And then the second daughter of dr Moreau was announced I was like I’m going to love this and then I did. reworking SF classics is just so completely my shit and moreno-garcia does it sososososo well. really recommend watching island of lost souls (the 1932 adaptation) right before watching this, they pair together perfectly (it;s like, one takes this base story and does something mostly shitty but still kind of fascinating/intriguing with it, and the other takes this base story and turns it into something incredible).
13. what were your least favorite books of the year?
Listen. I read so many bad romance novels this year. also a lot of really really good romance novels but. so many bad ones. i don’t want to like name names but here is a vague list:
-romance that was literally just ted lasso but ALSO the author was originally a het romance writer who had never written gay before so the sex scenes were like ‘he put his thingy in my thingy’ and it’s like maam. this is not my immortal. either say hole or leave.
-tiktok popular book that was EXTREMELY badly-written (yes this happened 3 times. it will probably happen again. I’m not even on tiktok--i’d see some non-tiktok person rec it also so i’d be like oh then it must be good ! and it never was. idk i am Charlie Brown and tiktok is lucy holding the football)
-started reading a fantasy romance and was intrigued by the premise and then they described the love interest and I was like ‘oh. this is just fantasy k*lo ren.’ i have like zero feelings on k*lo ren he just is not sexy to me so it always took me out of it and made me put the book down. also I don’t even think the books themselves were r*ylo or republished fanfic or anything I think the authors just think that character/actor is sexy. which is fine. i just am not personally into that. this also happened twice

ok @ongreenergrasses tagged me to do this and that's how I know we're made for each other bc tagging me in things is my love language
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 20, but 13 of those shouldn't count because they're Sherlock and I am not that person anymore
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? ok I had hopes that there was some way to do this besides doing, you know, math. but. it's 169,674
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?  shockingly, #1 is Death and John Watson; or, Five Times John Watson Met Death and the One Time He Died at 615 kudos. If you'd asked me what was going to top this list I never in a million years would have said this one. I might have to re-read this now.
What I would have said actually comes in at #2, the (almost complete, dear g-d I'm so close) Come then, and be broken at 376 kudos.
#3 my beloved, my eldest daughter of a fic, Put Away Childish Things at 223.
#4 is astoundingly another Sherlock fic, this one creatively titled Five Times John Woke Up to Sherlock and One Time He Didn't (it's not bullying if it's past me I'm making fun of, right?).
#5 is a tie, with 60 kudos each, but they're part of the same series: A Great Man and Something Like Beginning, from my Sherlock kidfic (and incidentally how i met Hayls in the first place!).
I'm really committed to preserving my ~journey~ as a writer, but the outsized prevalence of Sherlock fic on my profile is making me question that decision. I feel like it's false advertising for who I am as a person now. 😅
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I try to! It might not be in a timely fashion, and honestly sometimes I feel weird about it, but I do go through and answer a few at a time when I have a few minutes.
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I refuse to re-read the Sherlock fic just to confirm, but I think Childish Things wins by a landslide anyway. Fic where John or Sherlock died was a dime a dozen back in the day whereas "[a genderswapped] stiles helps peter kill her best friend" is still a very particular, unique twist of the knife.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? this is probably going to be that Sherlock kidfic verse!
7. Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written? I absolutely do not write crossovers. No offense to anyone who does, but I simply do not understand the appeal.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic? It was less about the fic and more about the fact that I pointed out 911 has some copaganda elements via a fic's tags, but yes.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind? I now, as of literally the most recent chapter of the most recent work I posted, have to admit that I do technically write smut. It's super cerebral, feely smut, but you do read two people having sex, so like. guilty.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I don't think I have written any fics worth stealing but if it's happened I don't know about it
11. Have you ever had a fic translated? nope!
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before? nope! I have co-written things in Real Life and I honestly don't think I have anyone that I would want to write fic with like that. HOWEVER I do have a beloved sounding board in @ragequilt
13. What’s your all time favorite ship? i literally cannot answer this, there is no way I can say decisively
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? I had this fic from when the first of the new star wars movies came out where everyone thinks poe is dead, so finn has to become a person on his own, essentially, rather than being taught/hand-held by poe which I felt like I was seeing a lot in fic. The whole thing was epistolary, a diary that finn's therapist had him start keeping, which he then started writing to Poe. That's pretty firmly abandoned at this point, but it still haunts me and I wish I had finished it.
15. What are your writing strengths? Hayls once told me I'm really good at dialogue, and I actually think that's true. I'm also pretty good at atmosphere, I think, though no one has ever said exactly that. I do think I'm good at characterization, and that for me is really tied to how I do dialogue. I would honestly accept any commentary anyone wants to offer on the subject, though
16. What are your writing weaknesses? PLOT. not like, emotional arcs or a character's journey or whatever but. the ticky little nuts and bolts of how we get from a to z, especially when it requires a tight plot of external action. I always think about myself as (to quote @ragequilt here) someone who writes hurt/comfort, not casefic, and this is why. I'm rarely interested in writing the finer details of a mystery or an extravagant plot full of courtly intrigue. I'm probably bad at other things, too, but this is the one that stands out like a glaring neon sign to me.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I think in almost every case it's not necessary UNLESS it's being done for effect - that is, if I intentionally want the reader not to know what's said. Otherwise, I'm just going to put the switch to french/spanish/hebrew/arabic/mandarin in the narration. One exception to this for me, which is really just a sub-clause under the "only for effect" rule, is when I'm writing canonically bilingual characters who would employ words or phrases in both their languages in the same sentence. Some of this is characterization - Eddie Diaz speaks Spanish or Spanglish around his family; someone writing me wouldn't be writing me properly if they didn't write the Hebrew/Yiddish/English patois that I speak in Jewish spaces. I don't want my writing to read like the over-translated subtitles you sometimes see where loan words are translated, thereby rendering the subtitles actually less intelligible. It's a delicate balance and I wouldn't guarantee I get it write all the time, especially when it comes to not othering a character I'm writing. (also @ hayls I am one of those people who always/almost always says Hashem instead of g-d 😂 for me it's a way of making sure people don't think I'm talking about Christian God™️) You will notice, though, that I do have a tipping point implicitly delineated here - if someone is speaking another language for whole sentences, I'm just going to put that in the narration; single words or phrases will be written as spoken.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Sherlock (womp womp)
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to? I've never written Destiel fic, and while at this point you might be wondering what on earth there is left to say via fic about that pairing, I have a lil thing bubbling around in my brain about bodily autonomy vs. trauma vs. helping someone not suffer from their trauma while violating whatever the brain equivalent is of bodily autonomy.
20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? whyyyy would you ask someone this, it's like asking someone to pick a favorite child. the answer will change tomorrow, but right now I think it's the still-WIP sequel to Childish Things, A Twisted Thing Cannot Be Made Straight. It's got fun witchy!Stiles, buckets of angst but also lots of fun pack shenanigans in flashbacks, lots of me working out my own feelings about childbirth and raising children, ambiguous relationships, belated grappling with trauma, and also a satisfyingly bloody climax. There are some scenes there that still give me chills to read, and I wrote them.
@ragequilt I want to see yours!

5x20. “The End” - X-Files Rewatch
A little missing scene fic I wrote to accompany this episode: [INTRUSION] / Read on AO3 / rated T / M/S UST / Diana / Multiple POV, Drabble, Missing Scene / The first interactions between Mulder/Scully/Diana after the conference room scene. Also, how did Diana end up in the back seat of their car?
Tumblr media
Anyway, on with the episode! I have quite extensive analysis about Diana & Mulder, Scully's jealousy and the MSR. Probably one of my longest posts yet. Hope you enjoy! Comments, reblogs and tag comments are love!  ❤️
***
Cute lil' Gibson. Love him so much. ❤️
Mulder and Scully's picture in their office.
Tumblr media
What is Mulder hoping to find?
Mulder isn't sure, beyond "The Truth". His sister, of course, but overall?
Scully can't live with ambiguity like that - that their investigations will continue forever with no end goal, because there is no end goal in Mulder's mind. She needs more certainty, something solid.
If Mulder reaches the end of the work - does he lose Scully? (This theme is addressed in Fight the Future.)
Mulder's face when he sees Diana.
He's not angry, just shocked. They didn't leave on necessarily bad terms, at least in his mind. He probably blames himself, as he usually does. (MORE AT THE END.)
"There were things at home I decided I wanted to get back to."
Diana's assumption that she can have Mulder when she gets back. There's no idea that he's changed or doesn't want her any more.
Scully is confused. Why are they giving this woman a ride? Why is she being included in something that was normally just something she shared exclusively with Mulder? She's jealous, possessive, at least when it comes to Mulder.
Their positions entering Gibson's room: Mulder, Scully, Diana.
The whole mind-reading scene.
I think Mulder is thinking about Diana, just because she's turned up and it's so weird for him. He also has the annoying tendency to take Scully for granted sometimes. 😥
It could be either Diana or Scully thinking about Mulder, maybe both. Gibson is a troll. Both of them have Mulder on their minds - perhaps Diana is a bit more overt, though. Scully is good at compartmentalizing and would try to focus on the case despite the strange woman intruding on her territory.
That Mulder doesn't want Gibson to say who is thinking about him. He thinks its Diana, of course, and he does NOT want Scully to know about her yet. He wants to delay any explanations for as long as possible. Why? He's never told Scully about Diana. His feelings for Scully, his thoughts about their relationship... they're in a very delicate position and his ex showing up throws things completely off-balance.
Diana peeking in on Mulder and Scully's argument/discussion MAKES ME RAGE.  😡
Scully's look when Diana speaks. Like... who gave you permission to enter this conversation, Diana? Certainly not Scully.
Tumblr media
Mulder giving Diana the "authority" to do the testing over Scully.
He obviously knows her strengths, what she's capable of. Still hurts.
Scully's "So you two know each other." and Diana's obtuse "It was a long time ago." OOF.
That Diana knew Mulder before Scully, does she feel that gives her some special advantage? She's trying to assert herself, get some of the power she feels she lost from their previous interactions.
Mulder's so transparent. He's SOOOOO uncomfortable with Scully knowing Diana.
Why would it be awkward unless he feels guilty or some strange sense of betrayal?
Why would he feel that way about a past relationship unless he was thinking about deepening the one he has with Scully?
Scully holding Gibson's hand. ❤️
Tumblr media
Gibson the little troublemaker.
Telling Scully she's thinking about Diana and Diana is thinking about Scully.
Scully finding out more about Mulder and Diana.
Her jealousy is written ALL OVER her face.
That Diana is more similar to Mulder
Scully can't help but feel insecure, that Mulder would favour a partner like Diana instead of her. 😥
I love how excited Frohike is to see Scully. ❤️
Tumblr media
When going to the LGM, she says : "Analyze the data … with an eye to the parapsychological."
Does Scully feel she needs to be more open-minded because she feels threatened? She needs an advantage.
Frohike looks very uncomfortable when Diana is brought up. What does he know that the other gunmen don't? Maybe Frohike knows exactly the predicament that Mulder is in regarding his feelings for Scully, and whatever issues Mulder dealt with about Diana.
Byers' "I always wondered why they split up." Oh he is so clueless. Scully's face. Her emotional, roughened voice. She's not dealing well with this new info.
That he was in a romantic relationship with Diana, while working with her. She’s probably thinking: maybe Diana is the reason that her and Mulder haven't had anything happen between them, why he's rejected her over and over? He doesn't feel that way about her, he's been pining over this other woman. Who will now replace her not only in a romantic sense (that she never had but she perhaps thought might have been possible) but also in a professional one.
Scully heading to the Gunmen's to fact-find about Diana is pretty cute in a heartbreaking way. Scully brings something for them to look at, but she is also there to grill them about Diana. I think her evasiveness about her reason for being there might be pretty telling to the Gunmen (Frohike, at least), and they might suspect some sort of jealousy on her part.
Tumblr media
Mulder's chatty when there's only one of them.
Diana is DEFINITELY trying to manipulate Mulder away from Scully. "I sense you could have used an ally, though – someone who thinks like you, with some background."
Mulder's defense of Scully: "I've done okay without you."
Diana's "Hey ... I’m on your side." and taking his hand. This just screams manipulative to me. Also, this seems like a strange phrase to use. She’s trying to convince herself as much as she is Mulder.
Scully seeing the handhold.
Walking away, trying to recover from whatever it was that she thinks she saw. Some sort of intimate moment - after learning about their past. Diana seems to want to rekindle things, but where does Mulder stand?
The scene in the car is just heart-wrenching. The deep sigh, the tears in her eyes.  😥
Then, Scully proving to a roomful of agents why she's been the BESTEST PARTNER EVER. TAKE THAT STUPID FOWLEY. (I’m not biased, I swear.)
Mulder's so happy and proud that people are seeing how awesome Scully is. ❤️
Scully dropping the "five years" that she's worked with Mulder to Diana and talking about proof.
Diana's criticism: "How do you quantify the spiritual? It can’t be done." Trying to undermine the importance of what Scully's learned, what she's given Mulder.
Diana frames her argument as being concerned with the X-Files being shut down. So what? Is Mulder just supposed to ignore the incredible evidence so he can continue his endless pursuit of nothing? Never wanting proof or anything concrete, just happy to gather stories and have faith in unprovable beliefs?
The similarity to the beginning with Skinner - what does he want? Does he want proof or does he want to endlessly investigate cases and learn interesting things but never actually accomplish anything? Does he want Scully's way, or Diana's?
Scully's white suit vs Diana's black one. Just sayin'.
MULDER DOESN'T ULTIMATELY CARE ABOUT THE X-FILES IF HE CAN GET PROOF. HE CHOOSES SCULLY.
Pre-Scully, would Mulder have thought the same as Diana? Probably. But now his beliefs have shifted. It doesn't matter what he has if he doesn't have the foundation, the basis in reality - to back them up.
Mulder has GROWN. He's changed so much since Scully's come into his life.
Time for Scully to do the same.
CSM back to his old tricks. They wanted him back so he could assassinate - but he's just a tricksy manipulator who takes pleasure in tearing hope away from people at the last minute. He's a cat playing with a mouse before he breaks it’s neck.
Scully's wearing a lot of skirts this season. ❤️
Gibson's "They’re so worried about what other people are thinking when the people they’re worrying about are worried about the same thing. It makes me laugh."
Scully's worried about Mulder, and Mulder's worried about Scully.
Tumblr media
"No, you don’t care what people think. Except for her. The other one." - Gibson
Scully does what's right no matter the consequences. That's why she's still with Mulder. But Diana, she has no idea what to do there.
Diana falling asleep while watching Gibson. So she's incompetent, too? Cool cool cool. 😡
Scully at Mulder's apartment. Skinner knowing she's there.
She went home after finding out Diana was shot/after finding the sniper assassinated. Changed and came to Mulder's apartment. Why? To be there for him. Maybe she heard about Jeffrey Spender and his threats.
"I'll be here if you need to reach me." - Scully
Staying with him, helping him through whatever he's thinking; that they've lost not only the proof but the X-Files as well. Maybe their partnership.
Scully feels guilty. Mulder sided with her, chose her proof despite the warnings from Diana. And the consequences she mentioned are all coming true. Maybe she's not good for him anymore, maybe she is HOLDING HIM BACK. Her thoughts, her guilt that she expresses in Fight the Future start here.
The ending.
Holding onto Mulder while he stands there, stoic and unresponsive.
First, he lost his proof, his answers. Then, his life’s work. What’s left?
Scully’s reaching out, but he's folded into himself.
I like how this episode seems to end with Scully embracing Mulder - trying to hold onto him while he is the stoic and standoffish one. Seems like this whole episode, from an MSR perspective, has been about Scully's emotions surrounding their relationship, trying to hold onto Mulder, who she feels is slipping away. Holding tight to the idea of THEM when she's not sure there has ever been the possibility of a THEM.

MY DIANA THEORIES
Diana
She helped CSM when he was shot in Redux II: in exchange, he'd find a way for her to return and get Mulder back
She returns at the same time as CSM; at the beginning all she's told is that she can have Mulder (yes, like an object), nothing much about Scully except that she's his partner and they AREN'T involved
She's shot, why? To show her that CSM can do what he wants with her, that he OWNS her; she's cured quickly, by HIM: tells her she's going to be working on the XF with his son and her only objective is to get Mulder to turn against Scully or at least put a wedge between them
CSM knows that the MSR is the reason why his repeated attempts at turning Mulder have failed. Mulder's changed, he no longer can be manipulated by people as easily. Scully is his conscience, his integrity. As long as they are together, Mulder in invulnerable.
Diana is the perfect way to disrupt the relationship. She's been working with the Consortium, and she can (or at least used to be able to) wrap Mulder around her finger.
Diana/Mulder Relationship
They had an on-again, off-again relationship ever since he was out of the academy (Gunmen)
Diana was manipulative but loved him in her own way. She feels entitled to him. She assumes he will come running back to her because he always did it before.
From my Kill Switch post: Diana made Mulder wear the ring to 'claim' him, she was pretty possessive of him. They didn't actually get married until after they discovered the X-Files. And that was sort of a last ditch effort by Mulder to keep her, since she was getting impatient with his obsessive focus on the X-Files. She left anyway shortly after, sent the annulment papers by mail for some bogus reason that she guilted him into agreeing with. I don't think Mulder was ever in a healthy relationship with someone who was unselfish and truly cared about him until Scully (and even that isn't quite healthy in some ways, but at least she cares for him).
Mulder feels responsible for losing Diana, that it was all his fault for the relationship failing. He's avoided romantic entanglements since then. He SPECIFICALLY refused to entertain the idea about loving Scully because of this history.
He doesn't harbour any negative feelings towards Diana, or feel that she did anything wrong.
I have some ideas of what she said to him to get him to agree to the annulment and they'd probably fuck him up; this goes beyond speculation and into fanfic territory so I won't get into it here. Nevertheless, he feels like he's shit at relationships, that if he were to try to become involved with Scully in that way that she'd leave him because of it. He always loses those he loves, and it's always his fault.

just a quick question from that 20 writers questions thingy you posted... how do you come up with fic titles? it’s something i kind of struggle with a lil bit, but somehow yours are always perfect ??? like The Soldier of Stars ??? Fortune Favours the Brave ??? how ???
questions are always welcome here haha hello!! :D thanks so much for stopping on by - it truly means a lot my friend and i’m more than happy to answer questions about anything! <3 the weather is absolutely beautiful, and i’m feeling very motivated and vibey and happy today so this just *elevated* it so thank you!
okay so -- FIC TITLES! i’ve gotten this question quite a few times in the past and so i always hope that somehow this post helps you out. and i totally get it omg! fic titles, let’s be real, can be HARD! especially when you’re trying to figure out your story, what direction you want it to go in, your characters, plot, themes - all of that, i totally get it! AW YOU’RE TOO KIND TRULY!!! <3 that means so much truly you don’t even know! :)
we’ll start with some examples first because i actually do have backstories for those fics mentioned above! and then i’ll leave some tips that i feel can be helpful! <3 (under the cut so we don’t bother everyone’s dash with this long post hehe!)
The Solider of Stars is very much about Hazel Parker, along with Catherine McCown and Elizabeth Elliot and their sisterhood and time in Easy during Operation Virago. BUT -- another major plot point is Hazel’s connection inherently with the stars throughout the entirety of the fic. She always brings them up, she finds her comfort in them and most importantly they remain a constant in them. And in a way, this sort of just *hit me* if we want to call it, it really came to me in the middle of night last year at this same time and I really wanted to stick with that theme of the importance of stars!
Fortune Favors the Brave is actually a latin quote I put a twist on! It’s originally in many cases, Fortune Favors the Bold, but I’ve seen forms of it where Bold is actually Brave and Brave really fits better for my Nightingales and it really stuck. I tend to revert to my routes of Latin courses that I took when I’m in doubt and in many cases it helps more than ANYTHING! So Latin phrases are always a huge help for what I recommend! And feel free to put a twist on them all you want -- that makes it all more the fun!!
Landslide was originally from the Fleetwood Mac song entitled Landslide just because that song fits the angsty-sad-ominous vibes of Landslide so well and basically it is a parallel to how Natia’s life is very much constantly in a Landslide - in quite the metaphorical way which was super fun to put together.
SO  -- if there’s anything you’ve gathered from the 3 examples above is that I really do ANYTHING for story titles. Look at songs, look at latin phrases (latin is the route of so many things, and it is always a unique twist!), you could look at quotes from the time period as well and pick apart the quote for a title, quotes from today even, phrases you find that you like, even if you write the first chapter and find a line that you like and use that line from Chapter 1 for the entirety of the title of the fic!
AND ALSO, try and think of what is your main theme or plot or idea that you have going on in the fic - what do you want your reader to remember and focus on as they’re reading? For example, take something like ‘Harry Potter’ - the story is very much about Harry Potter and of course his adventures at Hogwarts, and each little tag added onto the end describes what Harry Potter does in that book/movie, like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows! The Deathly Hallows were HUGE for the 7th book and so you can also really play around with that! What’s that HUGE thing that is so important to your OC, to the entirety of the plot of your book? You can always work with that!
One of my other Band of Brothers fics that I’m planning is entitled “And Then The Dawn Came” and the Dawn is incredibly important - it’s sort of mysterious, ambiguous and ominous - you don’t know who’s in the right or wrong, there’s secrets, there’s lies and there’s people who are extremely morally grey. One of the key phrases is “Because the dawn always came....” in the intro and that really is reflection as a whole - you can do all this stuff, but the dawn in the end will always come, that will always be a constant no matter the situation.
i hope in some way this was helpful and i’m more than happy to continue chatting about stuff like this so always feel free when you need a question answered to come on by the askbox! i’m happy to give my perspective in anyway i can! or even messages - i’m always happy to help! :D thank you so much for the ask and for stopping by! <3

salty hugo nominee 2020 reviews: short stories
under a cut because long, etc
ranked roughly from “shit that made me the most annoyed” to “shit that made me the least annoyed”:
A Catalog of Storms by Fran Wilde
God did this ever not work for me.  It must’ve worked for someone, I guess?  To be nominated?  But, what?
Look, the story was already on thin fucking ice when I was halfway through and I noticed the narrative wasn’t going much of anywhere.  Then the storms started getting names like A Leaving and A Grieving and A Loss That’s Probably Your Fault and I rolled my eyes so far back into my skull that I had to wait a while for them to re-correct themselves so I could finish reading the damn thing.  AN OVERWROUGHT AND NOT-EVEN-THAT-EVOCATIVE METAPHOR IS NOT A STORY, I want to nail on the office door of A Certain Subset Of Acquisitions Editors.
Ten Excerpts from an Annotated Bibliography on the Cannibal Women of Ratnabar Island by Nibedita Sen
Sigh.
Look, I know why everyone wants metafiction to be good.  I’m a sucker for the meta and the contrary and the self-referential and the circuitous.  In college I convinced some poor sucker of a professor to let me submit some horrifying 80-page metafictional thing about Andrew Johnson being a piece of shit, told via (among other things) histograms, MSN Messenger group chats, excerpts from a 2100 reactionary Civil War novel that does not exist, strangely erotically-charged letters between Johnson and various southern governors, excerpts from an anthropology textbook published in 2400 that also does not exist, and so on and so forth.  That shit was delightful to write, so I get it, I do.
But I also don’t ask anyone to read my 80-page metafictional thing (except that poor professor, bless their soul), because when I reread it later, it wasn’t a story.  Parts of it were an excuse to show off my own cleverness.  Parts of it were almost a story—but I either couldn’t be assed to fill the full thing out, or I didn’t quite know how to full the thing out, or I just didn’t have the ballsiness to do so.  Alas.
So, okay.  In waltzes this particular story, a metafictional thingy told via excerpts from various books and websites.
And while this one didn’t enrage me with its mediocrity the way, say, STET did last year (an angry Facebook post that was only barely pretending to be a story), it also just isn’t much of a story.  Weird spooky cannibal shit happens.  Feminists be fightin’ with each other about intersectionality.  Sure.  But I feel like that’s just Tuesday afternoon on my Tumblr feed, not a proper story.
(I would be delighted to read a metafiction-y story that does manage to work for me, by the way.  Hit me up with your best quirky metafiction-y shit.  But this one wasn’t it.)
And Now His Lordship is Laughing by Shiv Ramdas
It’s like, fine.  The prose is good.  The right motions are made, mechanics-wise.  There’s just not that much to the story.
This is actually a problem with most of the stuff I’m reading in SF/F zines these days.  The prose is good, the prose is always reasonably good, and sometimes it’s so good I’d chop off my left pinky to be able to write some of the phrases they do.  But the story part, too often, ends up being a nothingburger with nothingsauce.  It’s obvious from the start that the colonial government is going to be horrid; it’s obvious from the start that Apa’s going to use some trick to get her vengeance; the only question is how.  And the how wasn’t especially evocative or thrilling, to me.
Blood is Another Word for Hunger by Rivers Solomon
Y’know, this one is weird.  You get a lot of points for being weird.  It’s not quite Philip K. Dick levels of weird, and it could’ve benefitted from that level of weird.  Like, if Sully’s gonna give birth to a bunch of previously-dead folks, I’d expect them to do some kinda weird shit, rather than just some amicable homesteading and then some Sully-planned murder, right?
What’s here is reasonably fun but I ache thinking about how much weirder and cooler it could’ve been.
Do Not Look Back, My Lion by Alix. E Harrow
This one was actually pretty solid adventure fantasy.  Actually, it sort of gets me in a mindset of wondering—do I ask too much of SF/F short fiction?  Like, I look at the Hugo nominees each year, and I’m always hoping to have my mind blown, my world rocked, and so on.  But I dunno, the English-speaking SF/F world is only so big, my mind can only be blown so many times, and maybe something can just be a good romp & that’s perfectly deserving of an award on its own.
It does some stuff with gender, sure, and that bit’s pretty fun, but mostly it’s a cool story.  Recommended if you’re into warrior chicks and/or healer chicks and/or those dating each other.
(BCS, as a venue, seems to select for a lot of this sort of thing.  It’s not always revolutionary but it’s also always a story and I appreciate the shit out of that.)
As the Last I May Know by S.L. Huang
So we have a blatant ethics-of-nuclear-war metaphor going on.  Lil’ trite and/or unsexy now that the Cold War’s over, but, well, the horrible threat of nuclear war never really went away, right?  We just decided to ignore it in favor of other looming apocalypses.  So sure, let’s ride.
I liked Tej in this story; I liked Otto Han; I liked how full a sense of their characters was evoked in such a small space.  Something about Nyma didn’t quite land for me, though, and I can’t put a finger on why.  I get why she’s relatively non-agenic, I understand the concerns and fears that drive her, but I just wanted something... more?
I dunno.  Maybe I’m nitpicking.  It was alright; I wanted more than alright.
Also, an ending like this is like when pop songs do that radio-edit lazy-fade-into-silence ending.  C’mon, commit!  The only time you get to do an ~ambiguous~ ending like this is when you’re writing “The Lady or the Tiger” and you want some middle school English class and/or some book club to argue ferociously over it.  But endings are what elevate things from thought experiments to real stories; it’s the moment you gotta say, yeah, this is a thing about the world that I know and believe to be true.
