My Dad can’t get out of bed at all anymore and he sleeps a LOT, so Mum needs company, so we’ve been watching a whole bunch of stuff together, and I (finally!) talked her into watching Justified. We just watched 1×09 Hatless. Do you know how painful it is for me to have to NOT keep pausing and replaying it over and over??!? 🤯

➠ currently reading: Oh! I have a new answer for this one! It’s The Alienist — Caleb Carr. It’s my second time reading it. I first read it in 2017 because I was in my Luke Evans era and he was filming the TV adaptation. It’s a thriller about using psychology to investigate the violent grotesque murders of young boys in New York in the 1890s, so it’s dark and gruesome and grisly and not for the faint-hearted, but the narrator is such a fuckin drama queen, he’s ridiculous, I love him 🙈

As someone who has watched too much tv for a long time i thought i should share with the group.

TV recs for the upcoming drought:

Some of these are harder to find, the tone and quality vary wildly, they're in no specific order. I tried for not too obscure, but not too obvious. Some are still airing, some are 20 yrs old. I swear I have a life.

Slings and Arrows. Early 2000s Canadian dramedy about theatre and shakespear. Fun without being shallow, aged ok, lovely performances, great writing. nuclear grade comfort watching.

Halt and Catch Fire. 2014 - 2017, US drama. Follows four characters through the 80s tech industry. First time I got the hype around Lee Pace. S1 is ok, but nothing special, s2 is a lot more interesting but kinda goes round in a circle. S3 and 4 and some of the best tv I've ever seen.

Somebody Somewhere. This is actually a new show, but has 2 seasons out if u want a gentle but never shallow comedy. Fills my sad gay heart with joy. And if want more new tv with middle aged gays Deadloch is streaming on amazon atm.

The Expanse. Finished recently. The sci fi I've always wanted. Big and scary and wonderful and pew pew pew space battles and adventure. Balances the grim with a surprising amount of hope? Has repeated themes of redemption. Also a whole book series should u need more.

This Is England. UK drama. A film and 3 mini series set from 1983 through to 1990. Grim, sad af, also funnyand sweet? And characters that I love. The start of my undying love for Vicky McClure. Big ol CW for violence, sexual violence, and era specific racism (esp the first film). Very good, but very hard tv.

Kingdom. 2014. Can be a pain to find because so many shows are called Kingdom. About MMA fighters having drama. Also families, mental health, addiction, etc. Excellent performances. Both a very dumb and very sweet, painful show.

Animal Kingdom. Legit only watched it because I was searched Kingdom posts and AK was out around the same time. Awful family having drama and heists. Adaptation of an Aussie film into a southern California TV show. Kind of a mess? but very compelling mess.

Obligatory Succession (Kardashians for annoying people, aka me. I am the annoying person. this is my perfect tv show), The Bear, (hospo stress and family grief show) and Severance (people talk about workplace horror, but tbh it also gives big mega church horror vibes too)- new shows that live up to the hype, esp if you like sad people. I don't think they really need recs, but i really liked them.

The Thick of It. 2000s UK political comedy? Tragedy? Though these days it looking fuckin utopian compared to UK politics now. Feels a bit like a partial villain origin story for Succession. I like how sad and broken hearted it is.

Outrageous Fortune. 2000s nz dramedy that is the source of my love of family crime drama. Aged badly in places, but still very good character drama. Also, for The Boys fans, Antony Starr at his absolute best. It's a big nostalgia fest for me now. Cheryl West is a forever fav.

Justified. 2010 - 2016ish. i'm lazy i'm not looking stuff up. Yes a cop show, yes a dad show, but also rock solid tv writing and timothy olyphant in a hat. I've watched it so many times, and every time it rewards. and yes, am watching Justified City Primeval atm.

White Collar. A dumb, total fantasy art crimes and capers show. Shit, but if you need to not think and also have Matt Bomer do a shirtless painting montage for vague plot reasons then oh boy there is no other.

Being Human UK. A ghost, a vampire and a werewolf share a flat. it's sweet and agonising and 10+ years later I still love these characters so much.

Legion. 2017 - 2019. Why make tv comic adaptations that are trying for realistic and boring? When they could all be like this? Why make anything that isn't as visually interesting as this?

Doom Patrol - same for doom patrol - superhero tv that cut out the boring bits and just went for the weird and painful. I read a couple of random doom patrols years ago and was so surprised and delighted and loved them. the tv show has the same effect.

The Boys. new, and still going, as far as I know. but two kiwi leads means under nz law i have to be a fan? also it's awful, pulpy vicious popcorn viewing. appeals to the shithead 12 yr old in me. yes, it's vicious anti corporate thing is deeply ironic for an amazon show, but considering amazon saved the expanse with no sense of irony at all I figure take all their money and keep yelling.

Preacher. Another comics adaption. The Boy's weirder, less obscene, more disturbing cousin. Tulip is another forever fav tv character.

Banshee. Continuing the tradition of heth and i starting dumb Dude TV and then getting overly attached. kinda pulpy trash, but if you can stomach the violence it's surprisingly good.

All Star Treks. I love them so much. They're so weird, and uneven, and dumb, and they're all the best and I love them.

One season wonders -

Trust. about the John Paul Getty III kidnapping. also about italian countryside.

State of Play. UK. the tv show, not the film.

I dunno. I could do a whole separate post for sit coms and brit coms and the weirder, more obscure shows and movies, but ffs this is so long.

My posts been bombing lately anyway and I'm waiting for my rice to cook so I wanna talk about some of my favorite pieces of media of all time

I know a lot of mfs on here LOVE twin peaks but I feel like a lot of the same people would love Atlanta and just have,,,never watched it??? Like ok yeah twin peaks is a crime drama technically and Atlanta isn't but they're deep down very similar! I mean you start watching Atlanta and it seems like a very normal dramady type schtick but Atlanta then hits you with just random curve ball after random curve ball. Justin Bieber is black, cars are invisible at some points, a Michael Jackson twin is living a reclusive life in Georgia with his badly skin conditioned brother. It's surreal, it's hilarious, and overall one of the best shows on tv

I mean I know it's a critic classic but I think a lot of people skip over justified. Like recently sopranos and other dramas like it have been getting a kinda rebirth, and I think it's time for that same treatment to get given to this show. Timothy Olyphant? Perfect! Margo Martindale as a season 2 villain? Impeccable!!! It is a western for the modern day and it does it perfectly

Probably the most niche on this list and in the same vein, hap and leonard deserved more than 3 fucking seasons. The writing was fuckin impeccable, the chemistry of the two mains was incredibly real, and each season felt concise while also going by in a way that didn't feel too fast. We got buried treasure, voodoo, and racism, all in 80s east Texas. I swear if the tumblroids ever watched this show they would've shipped these mfs til the heat death of the universe.

Remember when I'm Thinking of Ending Things came out and every pretentious bastard you knew was like "broooooo this is transformative!!!" Well Synecdoche New York is the better fuckin version of that movie by 10. Every absurd movie needs a miserable Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and I cry every day that that mf is dead. Again, not a cult classic or anything by far, but still deeply loved

Speaking of films that aren't necessarily looked over, I can't fucking shut up ab Dr. Zhivago, I've seen this movie ten times, which is ridiculous because that's a huge part of my life, this movie is long as hell. The funny thing is that I hate Yuri and at sometimes Lara, but pasha my beloved!!!!! I love him as a character and quasi villain.

Finally, I can't say much about this book besides read it god damnit. Please, please read it, it's my favorite book please I'm begging you please

So what we’re learning here is, I mean, A) that in some world the two of them worked together and maybe he double crossed or whatever, and also Raylan likes pork but B) that Raylan considers himself the sort of man that does not give threats, but makes clear statements of consequence and boundaries. We love that in this house as I am also very much generally a, “I do not make threats. I tell you what’s going to happen.” much of my family has in fact, fucked around and found out, after this year, and somehow, despite knowing me my whole life, remain shocked that I continue to be the person I’ve been for at least the last 5 years on this front. 

It’s tough to get across in caps how well-acted this scene and how it, despite essentially being a conversation between two people, manages to get across the incredible tension being displayed here. I love a scene in the opening of a show that tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about your character without fucking telling ANYTHING about them. We technically, I gotta bring this home, don’t even know Raylan’s fuckin NAME. We’ve been with him for two goddamn minutes, and already I have an incredibly clear sense of his morals and demeanor. I was just telling Jetty that ironically, it reminds me of the opening to Deadwood, which Timothy Olyphant also starred in, and also had a beginning like this (with a very different character) where you know who he was in the first few minutes. 

I’m not going to contrast this with the show I’m thinking of because I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but it’s much more often that I meet a character and am directly told what their deal is, while still not getting a full sense of the scope of WHO they are, not just a collection of things that have happened to them or tropes. 

It’s a brilliant bit of writing that bodes well for the show.

Alright ladies and gents (specifically @coping-via-clint-eastwood sorry this took so long) let me introduce you to my newest “holy fuck please rail me into oblivion” character, Mr. Cobb Vanth.

First and foremost, he’s played by Timothy Olyphant, who has been cast as a cowboy a few other times, the two that I can immediately think of (and desperately need to go watch) are Deadwood and Justified.

Now then back to Cobb. He’s the marshal of a tiny little town call Mos Pelgo

It’s presented as a small space “Boom Town turned Ghost Town”, pretty much one road through the whole town, and a saloon to top it off. That’s where we first meet Mr. Cobb.

There’s a moment of a classic western duel BUT something else happens that allows Mando to work alongside him instead. Now here comes my support to the idea of him being a space cowboy (it’s literally based on tropes)

1. Working begrudgingly together with the native (I think, those who are better steeped in Star Wars lore please feel free to correct me) locals to defeat the big bad threat (Plus “hey partner”)

2. Campfire. Bitches (Cowboys) love campfires. (I’m joking of course lol this all just crack)

3. He’s got a big....cruiser (again Star Wars nerds correct my terminology if incorrect) (also blame @bakerstreethound for this one and also this is where the whole fuckin riding thing came from)

And I’ve hit my image limit for this post SO ahem. Marshal Vanth is presented as a man who’s seen some shit, but cares more for his town and its people than anything else in the universe. He’s strong and soft, a good fighter, brave, and absolutely willing to get railed by Mando, literally tried to cross the Dune Sea ON FOOT WITH NO FOOD OR WATER to save his people, and oh when he walks they put in the sound of spurs despite the fact it makes NO sense in context. And just a not really relevant side not but uh I seen a lot of fics that have him like in a daddy dom role and no shade or judgement they’re all very well written but me personally I see the man as a sub leaning switch (hopefully I can get a fic idea I had written that’s gonna be allll about the man’s sub side) so. Yup. That’s our man. I hope this helps!!

it’s a lot about the way he says things, how comfortable he feels teasing and joking around with andrew. the fact that he would drop everything to do something for him and do it gladly. being able to sit around with him in silence, no need for any words, just existing together without feeling the need for words. cooking andrew’s favorite things when he’s had a bad day or just seems a little off. buying his favorite lush things as a treat. always texting him when sunny brings in his lemon bars and setting aside a few for him, even though he would never eat them himself. just being completely unselfconscious about his feelings for him, telling other people his favorite things about andrew, and when he’s around his complete inability to keep his hands off of andrew, even just casual touches.
