How Aaron could’ve been a good character and why he wasn’t

I’ve been annoyed at this for a good long while and i’ve finally gotten around to talk about it so here we gooo

please note that, though i watched all of mcd s2 while it was coming out, i haven’t rewatched it all the way through (i’m a little less than halfway through s2) so bear with me

now, we can all agree that we didn’t really have a lot of beef with aaron in s1. was it annoying that aph was keeping secrets? yes. did we actively enjoy the fact that this random edgelord showed up with all of this convenient information? sure. but did we actively dislike him? i don’t think so

im sure that some people did, but it was a far cry from the universal grudge that we as a fandom hold. the only question is, what changed?

the answer is pretty simple: he got annoying

there is no greater sin that a content creator can commit than to make a character tedious--especially a character that the fans are meant to root for. i once heard someone say that there is no such thing as a good character and a bad character, there are only interesting characters or boring characters

now, before the s1 finale, aaron wasn’t annoying because he made sense. we didn’t know a lot about his backstory, but we knew just enough to not have a lot of questions while also understanding why he as a character worked. he spied on zane, he got information, and he got away with it because, according to every government in existence, he was dead. he was doing it to avenge his village, which seemed to be his reason for doing most things.

that was basically it, because that was all that we needed. he didn’t answer personal questions because that could reveal his identity, and he didn’t hang around phoenix drop proper because he knew that there was a spy in the village who might figure him out. all in all, he was a very logical character

what changed? his motivation

after the gang sealed zane in the irene dimension, may i ask WHAt the fuck was his reason for staying??? nothing! what was his reason for keeping his identity a secret? pretty much nothing! it made no sense!!

according to all of his characterization as a *~lone wolf~*, it would make the most sense for him to strike out on his own and do whatever the fuck, maybe occasionally popping back in to warn the main characters of some impending doom, maybe hold a giant fuckass sword to someone’s throat again, maybe find some other tyrant to destroy.

but he didn’t, and it made no sense

this was made exponentially worse because he was an ~edgy dark angsty boy with a sad past and a dead wife~ and because he seemed to be able to do no wrong. he rarely, if ever, communicated with the rest of the group, and he often just went out on his own--and yet, most people seemed to trust him unconditionally?? he always seems to show up at the right place and the right time with little to no explanation as to how, and no one ever questions it. sure, laurance and dante had some doubts and even spoke up once or twice, but laurance’s grievances are mostly due to being in love with aph, and literally no one else ever asked anything, despite not even knowing his fucking name

and, of course, everyone thinks that he’s super hot and aphmau falls in love with him and then he dies a tragic death in a moment of self-sacrifice that really wasn’t all that heroic because he left his wife and child behind

i mean, come on

THAT BEING SAID he had soooo muuch potentiaalllllll

LET ME EXPLAIN

during s1, his role in the story was the spy--and he was very good at it, because everyone thought that he was dead!! how are you gonna blame a dead man for anything without sounding crazy! no one knew his name or his face or anything--and they should’ve kept it that way because, surprise!! theyre still at war in s2. sure, it’s a different war, but it’s still! a fucking! war! and like 70% of war is ESPIONAGE and INFORMATION and STRATEGY, havent you ever heard the phrase KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE??? they literally had possibly the best spy that they knew of and instead of actually putting his skills to work he just dramatically leans on trees and sits in the shadows??? WHAT

he clearly had ways to get into high places, since he had somehow gotten his hands on the amulet in s1, and he used to be a lord so he would’ve known things about POLITICS and KINGDOM STUFF--i mean, we all know that aphmau knows jack shit about this world and how it works.

what SHOULDVE HAPPENED IS:

after they all get back to the overworld, he leaves the party. idc if it’s immediately after or if he waits a few days, but he leaves regardless. every once in awhile, we hear of him popping up in various places, and we run into him a few times. he informs the gang of what he’s heard, maybe tags along on some missions. he still shows up in random places the way that he does in canon, but since he’s not based it phoenix drop i think that it makes a bit more sense, and he occasionally pops back into phoenix drop whenever he’s in the area or needs time to rest and recharge, and stays an informant for aphmau & her crew. as things pick up, he slowly becomes a more commonly-seen member of aphmau’s inner circle.

throughout this whole period, he finally starts to come to terms with the death of his wife & their village, and he slowly starts to share more with the group--nothing big, just details here and there--and he actually starts to develop *gasp* a personality. i’d like to imagine that he gets closer with laurance, dante, and katelyn instead of only ever talking to aphmau. i don’t think that he’s ever super talkative, but he starts to be a little less quiet & closed off.

at this point, he’s either told them his name or (preferred) they all have a list of nicknames that they cycle through to address him. sooner or later he starts to help with the building of phoenix drop and the alliance, taking on duties that are more akin to his old role as lord. he either phases the espionage out of his schedule or ghostwrites all of the legislation, and falls more easily into his new roles

i don’t really care if he ever ends up with aphmau or not, but if he does then that also happens at some point or another, but i, at least, would no longer be angry at that outcome

However, this whole plot would require everyone in the story to take literally all of their roles in this literal government that they’re building seriously, and we all know that that’s never going to happen, but i can dream /s

Tl;dr, if aaron actually used his strengths and skills to be a useful member of this alliance instead of randomly showin up and dramatically hitting things with his giant fuckoff sword, he’d be so much more tolerable

Farmer Au (Pt.3)

Virgil woke up the next day feeling more refreshed than he ever had before. Splashing water in his face, he could only think of the young ranch-hand who he would be spending his time with that day.

"Something on your mind kiddo?" said Patton, smiling.

"Its nothing important, just thinking of something," Virgil said, trying desperately to hide the blush on his face.

Patton gave him a knowing smile, "Alright, whatever you say Virgil," he said, turning away to head to the corn fields nearby.

Virgil walked to the barn, fidgeting with his hands the whole way down.

"Good morning Virgil," said Roman, Virgil felt a hand brush across his own.

"Morning Roman," said Virgil.

"Not much to do today in terms of chores, so I think I'll spend most of the day on your horseback lessons," said Roman, leading Virgil through the stables.

The pair of them stopped in front of a set of horses. One was purely white, with a blonde mane that seemed to have been braided together. The second was a black and white horse with violet eyes, a lavender flower braided into the front of its mane.

"Ares is mine, you can take Violet," said Roman, pointing to the blonde and checkered horse respectively.

It took Roman a longer amount of time than it should have to help Virgil onto his horse, but he finally managed to get a grip.

"Now just follow my lead and hold on to the reins, it's not as hard as it looks," said Roman.

They road a few ways away from the barn, Virgil feeling much more comfortable than expected with the whole scenario. The two of them had decided to stop at a clearing of different flowers and trees.

"Its a beautiful day out isnt it," Roman said as he watched Virgil running his hands through the water.

"Yeah. . ." Virgil replied, content in the feeling of the water of his calloused hands.

A few moments later the peaceful silence was broken by a whiney, and a growl. Virgil bolted upright and faced the direction of the noise. Slinking out of the forest was a large, angry, mountain lion.

"Virgil- run," Roman shoved Virgil in the direction of the horses. He tried to protest but Roman merely hoisted him up before he could say anything, sending the horses running back for the farm. Virgil watched as Roman tried to lead the lion away from the woods, panic rising in his chest. He'd been so focused on Roman he hadnt noticed a second lion lunging out from the woods until he was knocked off his horse.

He woke up in his bed back at the house, covered in bandages, aching from head to toe. He looked at the bed next to him, where Roman lay, mummy-like, his eyes were open, and were locked with Virgil's.

"Are you alright?" Roman asked, this seemed to cause him great pain.

"I'm more worried about you!" Virgil tried to reach his hand out for Roman's, but it ached to much to do so.

"Virgil I'm so sorry- I should've been more careful," the guilt in Roman's voice was almost to much for Virgil to bare.

"Alright you two, we've closed down that trail until Remy can hire someone to relocate the mountain lions, Virgil, I've informed your parents about the situation and they say it's up to you if you want to stay, neither if you are going to be doing to much until you heal up," Patton walked into the room with a hug of water and some wash clothes and medicine. The feeling of it against the scratches on Virgil's skin burned.

"You're lucky those werent fully grown, even at the age they were it couldve been a lot worse," said Patton, he, to, sounded guilty.

"Its not your fault sir, I shouldve been more careful," said Roman. Virgil stayed quiet, he didnt feel like he had the strength to object anymore.

Late that night he and Roman were swapping stories instead of sleeping, Virgil telling tales of ancient ruins and ghosts and vampires, and Roman spinning them into tragic tales of love and loss. Virgil liked this game, he was actually good at it, and it didnt require him to understand reality, because there was no reality to be understood.

"I think it's about time for bed, stormcloud," said Roman.

Virgil sighed, "Good night Princey," he said.

"Good night, Stormy," replied Roman.

1. How did you get into the Musical Touken Ranbu franchise? What was your first impression of it?

i got into it bc of @ohai-there and i was more of a peripheral fan of the entire touken ranbu franchise

2. Rank the musicals from the one with the storyline you liked the most to the one with the storyline you liked the least (you may include the Premium Live, Itsukushima Shrine and/or Shinken Ranbu Sai 2016 too if you wish). Why have you chosen to rank them in this order?

1. atsukashiyama ibun

2. bakumatsu tenrouden

3. shinken ranbu sai 2016

4. itsukushima shrinet

i haven’t watched mihotose so i can’t rate it???? rip

i lov atsukashiyama a lot and the storyline always gets me also bc it makes sense that they couldn’t change the past (coughs at bakumatsu) i just like when people follow the rules that have been set out for them, me looks at mihotose, pushes it away, that’s a paradox. anyways i like sai’s storyline also but i feel like bakumatsu is stronger in that respect

3. Storyline that you would change? Why?

bakumatsu tenrouden, i just wanted them to not change the past, even though that wouldve been tragic, but like the entire point is to keep their previous master’s memory and if you change it it’s technically no longer ur master buddy, get shit on okita-kun i lov u but-

4. Favourite scene or moment? Why?

uh the drinking bit in bakumatsu, and when imanotsurugi jumps over iwatooshi’s naginata. these are both really cute and i love the context, also when hachisuka downs the sake is good shit and i love the dynamic b/w imanotsurigi and iwatooshi

5. Least favourite scene or moment? Why?

whenever imanotsurigi gets really distressed, i understand it is for the plot but my babu dont hurt him plz

6. Scene or moment that you would change? Why?

when sanjou gets fuckn rekt by yoshitsune please, when theyre yelling out each others name as they go down, and then iwatooshi gETS FUCKN REKT LIKE HE’S HALF DEAD PLEASE

7. Which storyline would you want to see adapted in future musicals?

SAMONJI FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! samonji family and rai family angst,, ,, hoo hoooo

8. Favourite Musical Touken Ranbu character? Why? How is the musical version of him different from how he is portrayed in the game and other media?

IWATOOSHI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but even then, i feel like the expansion on all the character however minute from how the games potray them is one of the best things to have happened to me, bc with the games its stagnant and still but with the musicals they literally come to life and its a lot more spontaneous even if it’s scripted. i really like iwatooshi’s character bc there is less of “im the greatest thing ever can u even wield me lol amuse me” or him sleeping lmao and more of him focusing on imanotsurigi and it’s wonderful and cute and i love it

9. Least favourite Musical Touken Ranbu character? Why? How is the musical version of him different from how he is portrayed in the game and other media?

i don’t like yasusada’s character in all media esp when its him just angsting over okita-kun just bc of the whole break the rulez thing that really grinds my gears, i really do like okita-kun but like dont really like the bending time bc that just breaks the entire??? universe???? anyways i think yasusada shouldve become retrograde army bc he actually changed the timeline but i wouldn’t like that bc he’s a cool dude when he’s over it lol

10. The Top 3 (or more xD) actors whom you like best and whose portrayal of their characters you like best.

1. saeki daichi does such a good job with iwatooshi

2. sakiyama tsubasa is so pretty and really suits ishikirimaru

3. i really liked takahashi’s hachisuka and like wow, so pretty what a good smirk

4. kuroba mario is 100% my fave mikazuki, i feel like bc i didn’t watch the stageplay until i was very comfortable with mario as mikazuki i was like who is this????? blue haired???? man????? when i watched the stageplay (although hiroki did a really fuckn good job too)

11. The Top 3 (or more xD) actors whom you least like and whose portrayal of their characters you least like.

i actually don’t dislike any of the actors????? their potrayals are all really frickin good and i enjoyed the musicals bc of this

12. A Touken Danshi character that you would like to see in future musicals? Why?

iwatooshi and ishikirimaru i just want the interactions, me slamming a fist into my hand multiple times, a rare pair but plEAASE!!! i also just want to see more of daichi and tsubasa

13. An actor you would like to see (and maybe, the character he could portray) in future musicals? Why?

well fuck i just answered it in the last questions didn’t i woops, but yeah tsubasa and daichi, also imari yu wonderful, i love them

14. Favourite in-story Touken Danshi pair/trio/quartet dynamics? Why?

iwatooshi and mikazuki god help me, also whenever ishikirimaru is on stage and singing what a good time

15. Least favourite in-story Touken Danshi pair/trio/quartet dynamics? Why?

hachisuka and nagasone during bakamatsu i dont like the hate, even though i find it fair enough that hachisuka doesn’t like nagasone like boi i wouldn’t like it too if i was deceived so like lmao anyways i dont ship them together either, bc i feel that they saw each other as brothers even before it was discovered that nagasone was a fake

16. Favourite in-story overall Touken Danshi group dynamics? Why?

yasusada and kashuu, also iwatooshi and imanotsurigi ehehhee just love it a lot bc they care so much abt each other and its just plays my heart strings y’know

17. Least favourite in-story overall Touken Danshi group dynamics? Why?

the sorta alienation of ishikirimaru bc hes slow or w/e the justification is, i feel like sanjou should be a lot closer, though i understand the huge distances in time of when they were made so yeah i guess jsut sanjou being not as close as id hoped

18. Based on the existing characters in the Musical Touken Ranbu franchise, who would you select to be on your dream Touken Danshi 6-sword team?

is this like build a squad bc lemme tell you, , , iwatooshi, ishikirimaru, hachisuka, nagasone, horikawa and kane-san. THIS IS SO UNCONVENTIONAL BUT I LOVE THEM SO MUCH I CAN LOOK PAST LITERALLY ANY OF THE BAD LINEUPS LOL

19. Favourite Human Team character? Why?

holy fuck its a tie b/w hijikata and kondou bc i love them a lot, also bc im biased bc of the fact saitou hajime isn’t in the musicals me crying, also bc hakuouki has me like mmm binch anyways it’s either hijikata or kondou i love them equally in different ways

20. Favourite overall Human Team dynamics? Why?

shinsengumi dyanmics i lovedddddddddddd itttttttt,, bc they care so much abt each other and its so tangible and ugh it so sweet and precious

21. Favourite Touken Danshi-Human character dynamics? Why?

ehehehhehehhehe i like kashuu and mikazuki + kogi bc its really comedic and funny and i love it, also i just loved mario’s interpretation of mikazuki in general and it was really fun to watch

22. Least favourite Touken Danshi-Human character dynamics? Why?

hachisuka and nagasone, esp when hachisuka is like throwing a hissy fit over it like please bby chill out its ok

WHEN KASHUU LAUGHS W IWATMATSURIGI AND THEN STARTS SOBBING LMAO THATS RELATABLE

25. What is your overall opinion of the Musical Touken Ranbu franchise? Has your opinion changed from your first impression?

i love it very much and hold it close to my heart and i really like all of the actor’s portrayal of the characters and would like to see more of them all again

my first opinion was just this is just plot and boys what and now im thoroughly invested and need 2 have that sweet sweet satisfaction of more musicals (w sanjou + kashuu obv)

anyways huge thanks 2 @rz-jocelyn for making a second set of questions that i actually answered better bc there’s been enough time for me to internalise and comprehend all of the musicals better and just to get whats going on, thank you very much!
