Being an Australian girl born and raised, and one who lives in Sydney, you can imagine how happy I was when I was watching Free! and found out that Rin spent time in Australia (specifically Sydney I think?) The fact that the poor guy would have had to also sit through those stupid ass NAPLAN exams they make us do in primary school and high school makes me feel SEEN damnit.
I'm pretty sure the only country they even do it in is Australia, but I needed to get this thought out there. It's definitely something he would have had to do while living over here, and it just makes me happy that he would have had to deal with it as well. And if any there are other Aussies see this who are also a fan of Free! and had to sit through NAPLAN testing, I hope this realisation makes you smile or laugh too! 😁
Oh! And for the people who don't know what NAPLAN is,and you want to so you can maybe better understand what it is and why I (along with pretty much everyone who has ever had to do it) hate the damn thing so much, I'll break it down below for you! You don't have to read it, but it's there if you want to, it doesn't impact on what I said above, it just explains what it is and why most people hate it and/or think it's so dumb. ♥
༻𓊈𒆜Random Info𒆜𓊉༺
NAPLAN testing is just a stupid series of tests kids in Australia have to sit through during their education. You only do it in your third, fifth, seventh, and ninth years of school (although if you fail it in your ninth year you have to retake it until you pass). It stands for National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy and like the name suggests it tests your literacy and numeracy skills and started back in 2008. As you may have noticed, I, along with a lot of other Australians, think it's dumb.
For starters, we aren't even graded on it. Sure we receive a pass or a fail, but it doesn't actually count towards the grades we receive in school or the results of any other exams we take. You sit the tests, the results come back, and it tells you whether or not your skills in that area are average, below, or above. A passing grade is just in the average margin or above average margin, but again it doesn't actually count towards anything and you don't have to retake it if you 'fail.' The only time you have to retake it is in your ninth year of school if you fail. You sit the tests you failed again in your tenth year and you retake it until you get into the average or above margins.
All in all it's pretty much considered a huge failure and a lot of schools in Australia are trying to circle it out of their curriculum. I think I heard a while back that most states don't do it anymore, but Queensland and New South Wales still do. People argue that it's more of a reflection of our teachers abilities to actually teach us, but again it's pretty much this huge failure.
It's taken by just about every kid in the country in the third, fifth, seventh, and ninth years of school. There are some exemptions but it's sat by a very large majority of students in those year levels. It costs about $100 million a year for everything that goes into it but it doesn't actually improve teaching standards, offer much insight, enhance educational resources, or boost the well-being of students and teachers. There's little to no educational value and the reliability of results is poor at best. Not to mention the fact that we receive the results a whole five months after the test itself.
The school year starts in late January and the test is done in May, so it's usually around October that we get the results. Considering the school year ends in mid-December, it's impossible to even consider let alone create a meaningful change that will assist students and their teachers in anyway shape or form before the end of the school year. Even though some argue that it's a reflection of a teacher's ability to educate, it actually indicates very little in regards to a teacher's quality and actually seems to encourage a poorer quality in teaching. It promotes a superficial kind of learning as opposed to one that focuses on encouraging creativity and cultivating complex knowledge and skills needed in the real world. Not to mention it doesn't demonstrate a kid's performance in sport, science, and the performing arts.
It just gives students a load of unnecessary stress and anxiety, not to mention that some of the kids who are taking it are as young as seven years old (and I'm one of those kids)! I managed to scrape a pass whenever I had to do a NAPLAN test but it still told me that my performance would affect my ability to succeed in school and in life. Most of only started realising how stupid and flawed it was in our seventh and ninth years of school, but by then we were already becoming accustomed to the ridiculous amount of pressure by our teachers to do well, otherwise we'd be seen as below average and dumb.
Yes, it is definitely important to see and measure how well students are performing and how well teachers are educating their students, but NAPLAN is in no way a reliable way to test these things. It's unreliable and skewed data, isn't a reflection of genuine ability, only tests a very narrow field of education, and delivers an enormous amount of pressure to children as young as seven years old.
Despite all these flaws and the absolute failure that is the NAPLAN exams, it's one if the few (if only) nationwide tests that Australian kids have to take. And again, this costs Australian taxpayers around $100 MILLION a year.
It's stupid, I hate it, we all hate it. Rin probably would have had to take it so yeah, that makes me happy to know that he probably had the same experience as me :)

i understand that! constantly posting can be quite exhausting so take all the time you need🥰
i’m doing alright. still learning japanese but nowhere near where i want to be. i took the JLPT N4 exam but i didnt like my grade at all (108/140 which is a pass but still) so i decided to retake it next december. i also applied for the mext scholarship program and failed three times lmao.
right now, i’m trying to be positively productive 😁
- japanese learner
Congrats on passing!! I get not being satisfied with your level, I'm still nowhere near where I would like to be either, but I think in a way that's a good thing - as long as you want to improve you will keep at it and if you keep at it you will improve!
And sometimes you just got to look back and realize how far you've come already, even if it doesn't feel like it. Not to mention that sometimes we feel less capable than we actually are. For most of my time here in Japan, I've been the person in the foreigner group that knows the most Japanese so people relied on me to do stuff and I've managed to do that (barely and not perfectly, but enough to get by) so I'm sure you're much better at Japanese than you might believe.
Applying for mext sounds super exciting! I don't know if you plan on applying again, but there are also many other options so depending on where you are from and what you're looking for, you can always consider taking a different approach to come to Japan (I can only recommend volunteer jobs, it's been such a great experience and it really saves you a lot of money lol). And who knows, maybe once you're in Japan new opportunities will open up for you!

I really need to learn to do things earlier and not last minute, but I just don’t know how.
And it’s not that I’m not trying - I am. Like there’s an essay I have to submit before Christmas and I started writing it around the beginning of December but then I just stopped and didn’t pick it up again.
And it’s not an isolated incident. A few months ago I had an cam and I started preparing for it at least a few weeks before but then I just abandoned it until the very last moment.
Or I was writing my thesis and I started a few months before the first deadline ([first out of three, cause there were three dates of an exam I had to pass but couldn’t take it before submitting my thesis so it was like submit by X and you have an exam on date A and if you fail you can retake it on date B or submit by Y and you have an exam on date B…]) and I had like 1/4 of my thesis but when I finished that part I just stopped and picked it up so much later and I ended up submitting my final version about a day before the last deadline (which was like two months after the first one).
And I don’t get it because if I could make myself start earlier then why couldn’t I go back to it until the last moment possible?

My CPA Journey
I originally decided to start my CPA (certified public accountant) journey in my senior year of high school in 2001. Unknown at the time, my inattentive ADHD derailed me in college. I still managed to graduate in 2009 with my B.S. in accounting and started work at a public accounting firm. Still needing about 20 credit hours, I enrolled in a B.S. in finance program in 2011 and in 2013 I was then eligible to sit for the 4 CPA exam sections.
My whole post high school life I was always reminded on how hard it was to pass the exam sections and since each section cost around $230, I didn't want to register for the exams until I was ready. With ADHD, I realized I would never be ready. When you qualify to sit for the exam you have to register and take at least 1 section of the exam within 18 months of being registered... so at the 17th month I took my first section, Audit in 2017. I failed. This was the section I was supposed to be an "Expert" in since I handled audit matters at my firm. This devastated me and drove me into depression.
In January of 2018 I purchased Rogers CPA review program that included video lectures, text book and practice exams. I took AUD again in October of 2018. I studied about 30+ hours watching mostly Rogers lectures and I passed! I didn't find out right away, after around 40+ days of waiting, I found out right after dropping my kids off with their Nana. I wish I'd found out just an hour earlier so I could have celebrated with them but nonetheless, I was so excited.
This left me with three more sections to pass (BEC, FAR and REG). I was motivated. When you pass a section, you have to pass the remaining three within 18 months or you lose credit for the one that you passed 18 months ago. Obviously, this meant I would quickly schedule the remaining exams ASAP.
Wrong... I waited about 8 months before taking another section, BEC and I failed. I studied less than 2 hours for that section. Then in October of 2019 I passed FAR (I studied 30+ hours). However, I scheduled my REG just two weeks after FAR and I was so burned out that I didn't study at all for REG and I failed it. So at this point I passed 2 exams out of 5 total attempts with my BEC retake coming up in December. I failed my BEC retake (studied 2 hours). Now I passed 2 exams out of 6 total attempts.
I was distraught, my window to passing the remaining two (BEC and REG) was quickly closing before I'd lose credit for passing AUD (meaning I'd have to retake AUD). I'd have to pass the remaining two by March of 2020 and if I failed just one of them, I wouldn't have enough time to retake them before losing credit on my AUD exam. I was depressed and demotivated, believing I was a crappy accountant and dumb as a bag of rocks. Compounding my negative emotional state was the fact that now my Rogers exam prep course subscription was now passed the 18 month window that I purchased a couple years ago. Additionally, the fact that I didn't really use Rogers that much in studying for REG or BEC prior to this point just fed into my depression. I called them and they graciously allowed me to have a 6 month extension. I finally took advantage of those video lectures this time!
I then changed my mindset, I went full throttle and scheduled my BEC exam for the middle of January of 2020 and my REG exam at the middle of February. I decided I was going to study 30+ hours for each, came up with a detailed study strategy and watched hours of the Rogers video and audio lectures while taking notes.
It takes about 20-30 days to get your score back after taking a section of the exam, this period of time was excruciating. My ADHD couldn't properly handle this period of time. My BEC score release was a day after the Super Bowl. I am a HUGE Chiefs fan, this is the Super Bowl they WON!! The very next day I found out I passed BEC with a total of 10 hours of study time. I was on cloud 9, I was motivated. I was happy, really happy!
This momentum propelled me through my study time with REG which I took on February 13th wearing my Chiefs dress shirt. If I failed, I'd have to retake not only REG but also AUD.
On February 24, 2020 I learned that I passed REG (with 20+ hours of study time). It took me 8 attempts to pass the 4 sections and yes, I know if I'd spend at least 30 hours studying for each of them then I'd most likely would have passed all on the first attempt. However, I'm not built like that, and working 50+ hours a week in public accounting at the time didn't help either.
To be fully honest, I didn't accomplish any work between February 13th and February 24th as I refreshed the score release website at least a million times. I've finally done it. This realization didn't sink in right away, I was so overwhelmed with emotion, joy and relief.
The process wasn't fully over yet, as I had to wait for the paperwork from the state's accountancy board and to finish the experience verification process and complete the ethics 8 hour CPE course. Besides the lack of publicly available information on this process as a whole that left me with huge amounts of anxiety, I found it very difficult to focus at work. Ethics exam was the worst part, having to get a 90% or higher just seemed tedious to me. Finally forced myself to take it in April and was officially awarded my CPA license on May 15th of 2020.
My only wish would be to have my Mother alive and with me to share in the celebration and because I know this would have made her so happy. However, some of my good friends here threw me a surprise party and I am so blessed to be surrounded by awesome people like them!
Normally this would result in me attending the initiation of new CPA members at the state Captiol but due to Covid, this was instead turned into a youtube digital video of just my picture and my name.
Looking back on it now, I am very proud of my journey. Finally accomplishing a goal that I've had for almost 20 years and at the same time seeing my beloved Chiefs win the Super Bowl is a memory that will never leave me.
My only advise for those trying to get their CPA is to take care of your mental health, be proactive in trying to avoid burn out and do not let the statistics intimidate your mindset. Use a study strategy that works best for you. For me, the video lectures was a far superior study method than spending hours on practice exam questions. But that's just for me and ignore the critics.

Hi! Can I ask for some advice? I am retaking my FAR exam bc last time I took it I was only halfway through the material (I couldn't postpone the test) so I failed. Do you have any tips on studying efficiently while covering all of the info? I feel like it'll take me a year to get through all of it.
Yes of course, I know how hard it can be, I failed REG back in December and Im scared to jump into the coursework because i’m terrified to fail again! I feel like it would be easier to message you then just talk to myself on here!!

This week has sucked.
I’m just gonna put this on Tumblr even though I know it will make the rounds eventually but whatever, I need to vent.
This all started on Sunday with drama which resulted in me getting dropped by one of my closest friends, still unclear as to why. Ever since then I’ve been treated like I have the plague and there’s a whole group that just ignores my general existence. Said group used to be my group of friends. They did a really good job of making me feel like complete shit tonight at the Avs game.
Then Monday rolls around and I was supposed to be starting my last full week of Paramedic school before going into field internship. My day starts off with me being late to school after sleeping through my alarm and then getting called into my program directors office. I sit down and he tells me I got a 79 on a retake I had recently done. I need an 80 to pass. And since it was a retake, according to the program policy I officially failed the class. Over one point. And it gets better. He then tells me that because I’ve had to retake this class already and now failed it by literally one point (which I pointed out two questions on the exam that were graded incorrectly on the scantron but he wouldn’t change the grade, he literally failed me for no reason), he decided that he was kicking me out of the program. My program director kicked me out of Paramedic school one week before field internship. I was set to graduate and finally get my medic on December 12th. I wasted close to two years in this program working my ass off for nothing.
Jokes on me I guess. So yeah, it’s been a great week. Also I miss Tyson Barrie. Even on a shitty day or even week, there was always a feeling of inclusion with him that was just kind of a safe place. Going to games was where I felt included and just safe. I miss that. A lot. Because I definitely don’t feel that anymore, I’m on the outside looking in. I don’t feel like I belong or that I’m included anymore. My safe place is no longer my safe place. Not to mention the one year anniversary of me being sexually assaulted is coming up. September is going really great so far.
If you made it to the end of this post and actually read it all bless you.
Rant over.

could you tell me about the schooling system in France? like how many semesters are there, how the winter break works and all~ thank you!!!
Hi anon,
I will try, although different schooling systems over the world are very confusing for everyone!
So what I’m going to say only works for junior highschool and highschool.
First, we really separate junior highschool (le collège) from highchool (le lycée). Mostly because they are physically separate (junior highschool and highschool seldom take place in the same schools), but also because we don’t treat junior highschoolers and highschoolers the same way.
Junior highschool starts with “la sixième” (that you enter when you’re roughly 10 or 11) and ends with “la troisième” (that you finish when you’re roughly 14 or 15).
Then you enter highschool and start with “la seconde” and finish with “la terminale”.
At the beginning of each school year, you get into a class (a group of people) that you don’t leave until the end of the year. For example, in “la troisième”, you can be part of the 3èmeB, or the 3ème C, or whatnot. Those classes do not mean anything about your grades, your capacities or anything. We do not attend classes (as in lessons) depending on our capacities (like in the US), but depending on whether we’re in troisième, cinquième, seconde, etc.
All of those years, from the sixième to the terminale, are cut in trimesters (and not semesters). So every year, the school year is split in three : roughly september to start of december, december to february, and march to june. At the end of every trimester, the teachers (and the students who were elected to represent each class) gather together to review grades, classes, problems that might have been encountered, etc. Then we all receive school reports with all our grades, teachers’ appreciations, you know the drill.
All throughout the year, we have breaks. I believe in junior highschool and highschool the breaks are between 1,5 to 2 weeks. We have a break at the end of october (All Saints Holidays), at Christmas, at the end of february (Winter break), at the end of April (Spring break), and then “les grandes vacances” (literally, “the big holidays”).
I don’t know what to tell you apart from that. We just have a break from school! Winter break is usually when people go skiing, sometimes some classes go on a trip together in what we call “classe de neige” (literally, “snow class”). It’s not a big deal, nothing particular happens.
At the end of the “première” (juste before la terminale), you need to take the first bac exams. At the end of the terminale, you take the rest of the bac exams.
If you pass your baccalauréat, then you can go do whatever you want with your life (depending on the grades you got), if you don’t, you can take a second exam and if you fail this one too, you have to retake the year, just like Elliott is doing.
Also, skipping class is definitely frowned upon in junior highschool and highschool. You either need medical reasons, or luck (personally, I skipped a lot of classes but I was a very good student so I got away with it).
Hope that helps!

rant
I feel like I haven't said anything in a while here and there's probably a good reason why nvm I'll delete this in the morning
Its currently 10.44pm and i just finished reading a textbook for my final i have tomorrow, I already failed it once so I don't feel the best about it
So far I have passed all of my exams, we'll see about journalism (which i had on Monday and fucked up), massmedia (which I'm retaking tomorrow) and slovak morphology (saturday. SATURDAY!!!)
sigh
I'm alone in my room and thank god for that bc my roommate snores and people will laugh when I say it but its so loud when i wake up during night i fall asleep crying its that bad
I also lost 6kg since the semester started idk if its the stress, walking to places trying to save some money or my newfound problem with sometimes skipping lunch and not having dinner at all tbh i feel like I'm punishing myself for doing badly in school and i know its fucking bad i just feel useless and like a failure
I miss home a lot and getting there takes literally 9-12 hours and possibly 4 trains so its not convenient nor cheap. I keep hearing the same thing, just study, do well in school, keep going, don't waste your time, try your best, don't give up, and honestly, its not helping
On the other hand, since December 26th I've watched approximately 25 asian dramas I KNOW its bad bad bad but when you're stuck alone in a small room in-between exams you need something to keep your mind off of things and I'm a hopeless romantic so my soul needs to feed on these things
I completely cut off one person here bc she just wasn't a good fit for me and every time i see her i want to walk the other way, put in my headphones and just don't listen to the crap she says, honestly, how many times can someone brag about literally anything before they figure out people just don't give a fuck
I'm so tired

My Work Stories (Part 3)
SPI GLOBAL (Libertad and Jupiter), 2015-2018
Sa totoo lang, nakakapagod pag palipat lipat ng work. Back to zero.
This time, yung account na napuntahan ko is tech. We support satellite TV based sa states. Dito medyo natanga ako kasi more on TV ang tinotroubleshoot. Nandyan si BBNS (black-blue-no signal), no audio, tuner issues and many many many many many more! As in! Yung mga concerns na di mo akalain na nangyayari, nangyayari sa kanila. Isa sa mga dahilan kung bakit nasa atin ang mga call centers ay sa kadahilanang mas mautak tayo. Hahaha!
Going back.. I never had an attendance issue mula nung nasa Alorica ako. I was never late nor absent until dumating yung 5th day ng language training namin dito sa SPI. Originally, we were assigned sa Libertad site kaya lang nung time na yon, walang space para sameng noobs so ang first week namen is sa Makati. That was a morning shift. At dahil tatawid ako ng Edsa, I had to travel at least an hour and a half before shift. Sa kasamaang palad, nalate ako ng 20 minutes nung last day. That was the same day ng language assessment namin, galing noh? So tumatakbo takbo ako from Buendia cor Jupiter to office. Medyo nakakahiya kasi baka isipin nila start na to ng pagiging late ko. Haha! I guess the bad luck just never ended there. I had to retake the exam kasi bagsak yung una until it went well. So there, endorsed to product training!
Sa product training, may dagdag kameng agents. Ito yung mga nadelay kasi they have to retake the language class. Then pag dating sa floor, may dumagdag na naman kasi they weren’t able to make it sa nesting pod. Dito sa nesting pod namin, may coach na naghandle samin na ubod ng daldal pero she speaks English fluently. Like she raps it! Ganun kagaling! Hahaha! Laging puyat kaya laging may kape. Our batch loved her so much. Pati yung team lead namin na maganda and very patient too!
Dito sa account ko na to, pag mababa ang score ng entire batch, madidistribute ang mga agent sa mga existing teams. Unless dapat mataas score nyo kung gusto nyong magkakasama pa kayo ng mga batchmates mo. Luckily, we were able to do that! Changes started here. We have to say goodbye to our current coach kasi pang nesting pod sya. We were taken over by a “loud” coach na sobrang nakaclose din namin. Ang competitiveness nya abot gang langit. I forgot to mention na sa account na to, we have billing and upsell, soft lang naman. Benta ng channels, theme packs, movie packs, security something saka madami pa. Pag nag hahype ang site ng sales, isa ang team na sa inaasahan. Nakakatuwa kasi not all may know it but tumulong ang team masalba ang bagsak na stats ng sales sa site. Hahaha! Magaling coach naming manghila pataas eh. Kung sensitive ka at dadamdamin mo ang sasabihin nya, iiyak ka talaga sa kanya.
There was a point in my life na gusto ko na namang magresign. Yung coach namin na competitive, binalik na din sa nesting team. Ibang coach na naman ulit. Pero this time, I heard na may magoopen na bagong skill. Higher level of support. I told my coach na I’m interested to join. To make this one short, naging part ako ng Tier 4 (I skipped tier 3), at si coach na bago... nagresign na. He got a better offer from another company.
After ilang months sa pagiging tier 4 agent, lilipat na kami sa Makati, sa Jupiter site. We were told na ang Jupiter site is gagawing tech site so lahat ng technical rep eh dun na maassign. So OK lang. Same company, same team, pero iba lang ng site. Dito sa Makati, naging friends ko yung mga original na tiga dito. Hindi na maitatanggi yan. Dito ko din nakilala yung bibeng nanay namin. Why bibe? Tier 4 reps are suppose to support Internet service, known as broadband. In short, BB. Gets? Haha! Basta malalim yan para samin. (By the way, yung tier 3 is called Dr. Dish. Sila naman DD. Yung trabaho nila, trabaho din namin. WTF.)
Ito rin pala yung unang account ko na nahirapan ako. This will the first time na may repeats, mababang AHT at survey akong dapat alagaan. At... palaging akong bagsak. BIG TIME. My manager that time would always talk to me kung anong problem ko, anung help ang kailangan, pero in a good way naman. I was never treated wrong kahit palyado na ko. And my mother bibe coach? She just won’t give up on me. Ako na nagsabi na magreresign na lang ako and I got a big NO for an answer. This mother bibe is a tech monster! LITERALLY! As in we get a response from her like “Paano ka naabot sa dito nang di mo to alam?” and “Pag may question ka, ibulong mo lang. Naririnig ng tier 2 eh baka masagot pa nila.” Of course my all time favorite, “Bakit supcall? Pag ito nasolve ko huwag ka nang pumasok!” Hahaha! Other superior would know her as a tech who eats receivers. Kabisado nya lahat. As in grabe! Nganga na lang kami kasi kilala sya on shore dahil sa galing nya. Jusko po.
Another upgrade sa skill namin ang magaganap. That was December 6, 2016. Before that, 7 months na akong bagsak. In reality, 3 months lang dapat terminable na. Pero iba si coach. She has her ways to keep me. This time I promised her na gagalingan ko na talaga. And I did it. I never failed that not much anymore. Meron man, pero di na alarming.
Hanggang sa mineeting na kami na aalisin na ang tier 4 sa Pinas at ibabalik na lang sya sa US. Pero bago pa nangyari yon, nakapagresign na ako. I spent my 2 years and 8 months ata dito. Sobrang saya din dito. Madami akong naging kaibigan at may circle of friends talaga ako. Oo nga pala, nalimutan kong banggitin na dito ako natutong maghalfday, magpalate at umabsent dahil maganda palabas sa Cinema1. LOL! That was nothing for me pero si coach ang ang ang nagsuffer non. Hehe~ But really, madami akong natutunan dito sa SPI. I know na madadala ko ang mga good things na to sa next company na papasukan ko.

so... personal rant time I guess--
my brother didn't pass his exams, he failed pretty badly, and he's getting kicked out of school and will have to retake the whole year (3rd year of secondary school, 14-15yo) in another school...
I don't know much about other education systems other than ours (Argentina), so idk how this works for y'all, but let me tell you, here it's a bad thing. well, in the type of schools we're used to at least, which is private schools for mid-high class (economically speaking) kids mostly (and my brother is a very entitled mid-high class 15yo kid, the brat). he was attending a really good school, the same I graduated from, the same my cousin's attended, it's a good school, pretty prestigious, with connections and all that. it's a good damn school. it's not the best, it's not amazing, but it's pretty good.
and the thing is, it's not super demanding, we don't get much homework, things aren't usually super hard, it gives you ton and ton of opportunities to take and retake and retake exams, it's pretty good in all that. you've got to study tho. you don't have to study much, christ knows I didn't study unless it was a pass or die situation, but you've got to study. if you pay attention in class you usually don't have to study much, professors are often good about that kind of thing, but you've got to study a bit. and most importantly, you've got to do your homework. we don't call it homework really, but we often have to write essay-type of things for a bunch of subjects. and you've got to do that.
my brother didn't do any of his homework all year, he didn't pay attention in class once in the whole fucking year and he didn't study shit. so, in December (south hemisphere, classes here are from March to Nov/Dec, summer being Dec to Feb/March) he had passed like 3/14 classes. we've got a weird system of retaking exams and shit, it's complicated and it doesn't matter, the point is that now (Feb) he had another opportunity to retake exams of the 9/14 classes he didn't pass back in December. And he went and retook the exams and out of the 6 subjects he already retook last week he passed 1.
so, we already know he's not passing the year even if he's got a few exams left still.
and it's not news, we knew he was going to fail because he didn't study shit all summer, it's not surprising.
I'm not sure how I feel tho.
I mean I don't care I guess, my relationship with my brother is either bad or nonexistent, so I usually don't care much for him at all. but this is weird.
I always liked school, I love learning, I really did like school, still do I guess but I'm about to start uni and that's gonna be different so idk. but I like school. I always tried to offer him him help, I didn't do fantastic in school, but I did ok and I already passed all he's studying now, so I always offered help. he never took me up on that offer, and I don't blame him, I don't mind.
but it's weird
idk why, it just is
I'm sleepy this probably doesn't make sense
I guess I wanted to explain it?? but I don't think this was very clear
anyways yeah, my brother is an idiot

How China CFA applicants keep beating finance’s hardest exam - education
Tumblr media
For three gruelling years, Ranger Yu tipped out of bed almost every day at 6 am. and studied until midnight to prepare for China’s infamous college entrance test, known as the Gaokao. After that, he said, the trio of exams to become a chartered financial analyst were relatively pleasant. The Shanghai native used his old prep skills to study on his commute, after work and on weekends and breezed through all three levels of the English-only program on his first try, adding the letters CFA to his resume as a health-care analyst at a medical research group. Now, Yu may hold the answer to a question that’s arisen in recent years as professionals obsess over the pass rate: How is it holding up so strongly even as applicants facing a significant language barrier pile in?The CFA has long been renowned as Wall Street’s toughest test -- with questions spanning economics, derivatives, complex valuations and ethics written in a financial jargon thick enough to stump the average US college graduate. The Charlottesville, Virginia-based CFA Institute, which administers the exam, warns that each level takes about 300 hours of studying to pass. Aspiring charter holders spend years taking and retaking tests, a slog that’s spawned an industry of textbooks, classes and websites like 300hours.com where hopefuls trade tips, complaints and even conspiracy theories. In recent years, a trend appeared in the broad statistics published by the institute: applicants from Asia -- and especially China -- have been flooding into the exams, overtaking interest from every other region. At the same time, the global pass rate has edged higher. In interviews, CFA holders and applicants from China described surmounting the exams as a warm-down after spending their youth in the marathon run-up to the Gaokao. Many were unfazed by warnings about the hefty commitment, saying they were willing to spend much more than a mere 300 hours.Yu, who said “diligence is key” to getting ahead in China’s growing financial-services industry, carved out time before and after work, then spent weekends in the library or in an all-day class at Golden Education. That’s one of country’s largest CFA prep schools, many of which tout pass rates of 70% or 80% -- far exceeding last June’s global rate of 45%.Language BarrierAccording to Nick Pollard, Asia-Pacific managing director for the institute, the uptick in test takers tracks “a growing demand for financial talent” in the region. The average pass rate in Asia “is in line with the rest of the world,” he said.Golden Education and competitors try to make studying efficient by honing in on material that optimizes chances of passing. A program priced at more than $1,500 on Golden Education’s website starts with a crash course on financial English.“We have the language barrier,” said Niu Jia, a senior lecturer for the school’s CFA program. But there are also other challenges for Chinese test-takers, he said. “The exam relies on accounting principles and valuation models that sometimes differ than those most often taught in universities.”The school assigns every customer an “inspector” to track their progress through the curriculum and even prepares a lunch on exam day. It claims its customers in college have a CFA pass rate of around 80%. There’s no way to independently verify the figure.ZBG Education, based in the southeastern metropolis of Guangzhou, offers 15-day summer and winter camps paired with weekend classes and online courses. The program has achieved a roughly 70% pass rate, in part, because of the calibre of students who enrol, said Jason Pi, a senior lecturer. Even still, instead of 300 hours, he recommends at least 400.Top Students“Most of the CFA takers are top students in China,” he said. “For most of my students, a few hundred hours is really not a big commitment. It’s nothing compared with the efforts you need to make to squeeze in a top university in China.”The CFA publishes regional registration figures for its semi-annual exams in June and December, but only posts global pass rates. On its website, it urges aspiring charter holders to carefully examine prep services before signing up and offers a list of those it vetted and approved. (The dozens of approved services include Bloomberg Prep, a unit of Bloomberg LP, the parent company of Bloomberg News.)“We encourage candidates to use approved prep-providers, and we provide information about how to select and research a prep-provider to meet a candidate’s learning needs on our website,” Pollard said in response to questions about the pass rates disclosed by schools. “CFA Institute publishes average passing rates every year, and candidates should use this information as their best guide to what is generally achievable.”China’s obsession with scoring well on the Gaokao is the subject of documentaries on the anguish young people suffer during years of intense cramming, sometimes at dedicated boarding schools far from home. Formally called the National College Entrance Examination, it’s known to induce breakdowns and even suicides. In 2019, a record 10.3 million students took the exam. The test, administered over a few days, grills students on a broad range of subjects, potentially asking them to prove the Pythagorean theorem, calculate the power of a crane given the size and speed of its load or write an essay in a foreign language introducing tea culture. A sample question published by the China Daily in 2015 required students to know the currents and wind direction they would encounter on a sailing from Fujian province to Venice via Mumbai. No FunYet it’s hardly Asia’s only epic test. In India, for example, top technology schools use the Joint Entrance Examination as a basis for admission, making it a widespread source of anxiety among young people. In Japan, it’s a test administered by the National Center for University Entrance Examinations.None of this is to say that people in Asia emerge immune to the emotional strains of preparing for the pass-or-fail CFA exams. For Priscilla Wang, who now works at a credit-rating company in Hong Kong, focusing her life around the test took a toll.“I had no time for fun,” said Wang, who grew up in China and attended college in the US. She headed straight home from the office every day to study, and found quiet places to read on weekends. “I had to say ‘no’ to a lot of socialising opportunities. Even when I did relax a bit, my heart was always heavy. I thought I should be studying.”One reason for the CFA’s popularity in Asia is that it offers a globally recognized credential to applicants who may not have attended a school with international name recognition, such as Harvard Business School or the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where costs are far out of reach for most people.Ronald Leung and Eddie Chung, both Hong Kong-based financial advisory managers at Deloitte China, estimate almost half their team is working on earning a CFA charter. The pair saved their money by eschewing prep schools, taking time off work and studying independently. Their employer chipped in an extra three days per level. Chung has one test left and Leung is finished. It was “very painful,” said Leung, who typically spent three months studying for each exam, passing the third on his second attempt. Even though he’s also a certified public accountant, he still isn’t done finding ways to burnish his curriculum vitae. “I would like one more professional title,” he said.(With assistance from Jeanette Rodrigues.) Grace is planning her wedding and preparing to take her bar exam!! i’m so happy for her. I just know she's going to do well on the exam. and yes she’s going to retake the MPRE exam. she didn't pass by 3 points. you have to get an 85 in New York and didn’t pass it. she originally took the exam back in April. retaking exams that are like passing or failing exams are so stressful. like I remember the reason why my downward spiral happened back in December was because I failed my exam for math which made me cry and I couldn't stop crying and eventually went numb. (that's how I usually get when I have breakdowns and eventually become depressed. its bad)

so, my ACT is a 25 and it sucks. I'm so scared because I'm such a bad test taker and I'm a rising senior this year. I have extreme test anxiety! I'm scared because I feel like I don't have enough time to retake it and get the score that I want. I'm so nervous and I feel like I have already failed. My dream schools are Georgetown, Northwestern, USC, Johns Hopkins, and NYU! My EC's and my grades are great but they thing that supposed to tie it all together (my score) lacks! any advice helps!!
Know that schools will sometimes make exceptions when it comes to ACT/SAT scores. If your GPA is stellar and the rest of your application demonstrates your capabilities as a student, then some schools will be willing to look past your low ACT score. You did your best, and you aren’t magically going to alleviate your text anxiety overnight. That said, if you’re going to be a senior this fall, you still have time to retake the exam. Most applications aren’t due until December, so that should give you plenty of time to get your test scores back before sending in applications.
