“Tha’ hurts.” Simon growled cruelly, yanking his arm away involuntarily to glower at you, making you even more frustrated at his attitude.
“Well if you’d hold still, it wouldn’t hurt as much,” you said as you gave him a moue, palm facing upwards toward him to ask for his wound back, to which he defiantly glared at you.
“Well if you hann’t been so reckless, this wouldn’t ‘ve happened.” He countered through his teeth, leaning in just a little to where you could see a crease in his eye from the angry look he had underneath his mask.
“If you hadn’t frightened me, I wouldn’t have run away.” you jeered back with a tilt of your chin upwards, wanting to properly meet his eyes as you bickered childishly with him.
Ghost paused, his gaze stuttering across your features, the pure kindness and care you had for him in this moment outshined the attitude you returned, seeing how it softened around the corners of your mouth, a mouth he might like to kiss one of these days.
His words stoped in his throat. Ghost knew you weren’t trying to argue, but that didnt mean he wasn’t still mad you were right.
“Well…you shouldn’t ‘ave been over there in tha’ first place.” He faltered, his pride getting the better of him and continued to squabble for his innocence, almost in fear you’d connect the dots for his own recklessness as protectiveness deriving from a place of love.
“Well you should learn to control your temper.” You added softly, your fingers eventually curling back around his bicep to prop his wounded forearm over the table, which he hesitantly relaxed under your touch, however much the wound might have hunted him.
“Now hold still, this might sting a little,” you muttered cautiously, taking an alcohol-damp cloth to clean his dirt infested wound, earning a hiss of pain through Simon’s lips
“Son of a cunt, could ya be more gen’le?” He muttered through another pained gravelly sigh, to which you gave him an anpologetic glance, then allowing the air of awkward tension to settle back between you two.
“By the way…” you started up again after a few seconds of silence, keeping your eyes focused on his wound and preparing to wrap it up snuggly before the exfil comes.
“Thank you. For saving my life.” You confessed, peeling your eyes from your work to look up through your lashes, seeing his gaze was locked onto you the entire time.
Begrudgingly he absorbed your gratitude, his eyes fluttered for only a moment out of embarrassment, glancing away and grumbling under his breath softly.
“You’re welcome.”

obsessed with the contrast between how openly and blatantly law carries the impact corazon had on him vs how reserved and secretive he is about his family and flevance. like he tattoos his whole body and designs his Jolly Roger and names his crew in honor of corazon, but the only marks of his home he carries with him are his skill as a surgeon and the hat he’s had since he was a kid. he even keeps two of his names a secret!! idk there’s just something about this sort of external focus law puts on the grief that he can actually act on and assign specific blame to, vs. the much more internal nature of the grief that he can do nothing but carry with him alone. but then again, by a certain measure the mere fact of his continued existence is one of the most obvious declarations of his grief over his family and his country that he could possibly make, so who knows!

Tell me how I, the gal with terminal "can't stop thinking about Tai Sui" disease, read hundreds of thousands of words of Mo Du over the course of months, starting right after I finished Tai Sui, yet it took me until right now in this instant to put together the Fei Du->Zhou Ying parallel
Like. Here's the favored son of a man who is incredibly powerful and morally bankrupt. He hates his dad and would be quite happy to commit patricide, should he get the opportunity, but he doesn't directly do so because it wouldn't suit his schemes. He has spent his entire life since his teenage years painstakingly putting together the chess pieces necessary to both destroy his dad and unravel the truth of a grand unknowable conspiracy that has haunted his entire life. He's a genius and the way his mind works is utterly incomprehensible to everyone else in the world, even those who know and love him best. The right kind of placid smile from him can be the most terrifying thing anybody has ever seen. He is willing to use himself up and toss himself out completely if it is the means to the final end of his schemes.
It's just that with Fei Du, the whole point of him is that he's not nearly so terrible as he thinks he is. He's not a psychopath. He's not cruel, regardless of how much empathy he may or may not naturally have. He's just spectacularly traumatized by his childhood. And the presence of Luo Wenzhou in his life both saves him from spiraling down into his original epic self-destructive plot and allows him to access his buried human emotions.
Then, 5 years later, Priest came back to revisit some of the same ideas and turn absolutely all of them up to eleven. She wrote a man who doesn't just think differently from others, but who perceives the world so wildly differently from anyone else that his experience of existence is utterly incomprehensible to his peers. She wrote a patricidal prince who doesn't just want to destroy his father and his company, then tear out the truth of a criminal conspiracy, but rather wants to destroy his father and his entire country, then tear out the truth of the sky itself. She wrote a man who genuinely doesn't give a single damn about anyone other than himself and his tiny tiny selection of loved ones. Who would destroy the entire world in a fit of vengeance and who uses his own willingness to kill innocents as leverage against others. She wrote a man who plans to achieve his goals by way of epic self destruction and does exactly that, leaving the main character's loss of him as the central beating tragedy in the otherwise best possible ending.
She also wrote a story in which, when Zhou Ying's closest and most loved person realizes the dark and scheming truth of him, rather than saying "I can fix him; I don't think he's really so bad," he says "yeah, this is my cousin and he's a terrible menace who tries to destroy the world sometimes. I love him more than anything."
You can absolutely see how Priest's interest in similar ideas informed both characters. It's just that Fei Chengyu didn't succeed in raising his perfect little sociopath successor, but Emperor Taiming and the demons of the impassible sea absolutely succeeded in Jokerizing Prince Zhuang. They just couldn't possibly anticipate the kind of monster that the demon of the east sea would become.

me crawling out of bed to type this and disappear back to my cocoon right after but-specifically looking at the hewitts since granted i know more on the remakes than the others but,
the hewitts only got vague, limited police action looking into them in '03 after erin chops thomas' arm off and gets away. and even though theres' coverage of it and everything, that literally ONLY happens after 4-5 straight years of the hewitts doing what they do, from 69-73 in terms of solely the remake timeline.
that's still a shitton of time to be ACTIVELY killing people to y'know. not fucking die yourselves. then combine that with the sawyers - their additional family members, their own trails of ruthlessness added into the mix, and this entire combined family unit likely has kill counts all around in the hundreds if not even way past that.
but even with the police involvement in the remakes?
its all SO SLOPPY, its hardly conducted with any real CARE about their own well-beings. like??? ya'll went into that house while THOMAS was STILL THERE... didnt even SECURE THE HOUSE.....
and even with the found footage? no arrests, presumably. the remaining hewitts are still at large, thomas is still at large. like... all ya'll did was corral them to their fucking confusing ass tunnel system and made luda (if we count the comics) far more involved and ruthless in the actual killings than she was in the movies lol
and yes technically speaking with charlie's death that could sever the stronghold they've got on the police and sheriffs' around them - but at the same time - how bad would it look of them to SUDDENLY flip a switch and try to unpack the years worth of missing persons, cold cases, murders, kidnappings, break-ins, assaults, etc etc that they swept under the rug? that's WAY too much man power, esp for back then. no one is gonna do that shit.
so. i truly dont think they have much to worry about even in the event of charlie dying - because the fear and influence they've instilled stands for law enforcement to continue to do fuck all - to save and cover their own asses.
