Sorry but am I the only one that thought that episode…sucked? Like it was straight up bad. Horrible pacing, no wrap up of all the random characters and plot lines they’ve thrown around all season (the tuskegee airmen, Westgates spying, literally all the guys beside like the main 4). (Seriously it makes me so mad that the three redtails got all of 5 seconds of screen time, almost no lines. Literally what was the point of introducing them other than to pretend the show was iNcLuSiVe) Even at the end of BoB and the Pacific you get a much better idea of what happened to all the remaining guys. In this they’re like what happened to DeMarco or Hambone or Brady or (insert character here) we don’t know! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The concentration camp scene felt shoehorned in compared to how it was done in BoB. Unless that actually happened to Rosie (which i haven’t heard anything about) but it was just like.. ok? It all felt so rushed and emotionless to me. Maybe I’ve just fallen out of love with MoTA but it’s been downhill for me since episode 6 or so.
i already made a little (read: long) post-finale write-up here, where i talk about the use of the tuskegee airmen, l'sandra, and overall editing/pacing issues i felt the show had. but i don't agree with the notion that adding the redtails was in any way insincere or trying to halfass being "iNcLuSiVe", i just think they suffer from this show's obvious time constraints. and to summarize what i wrote in my linked post, there's a limit to what white writers/directors/producers can do when creating a story about black people. there are some stories i'd feel uncomfortable with them telling on their own, truth be told. dee rees wasn't the sole nonwhite director, but she Was the only black one. i think she did her job well given the limitations and i appreciate that they let her direct those episodes, rather than leaving it up to a team of white people trying their best to tell a black story.
the worst i can say about the finale is that it didn't feel like That strong of finale, tho i wouldn't go as far to say it "sucked" or call it "straight up bad". i liked it plenty, it's just the weakest of the hbo war finales imo.
as for the concentration camp scene, artistic license was taken with both shows. unlike what's seen in the BoB, easy company wasn't the first to arrive at kaufering, and there's 0 mention of the all-japanese american 552nd who helped them liberate it). similarly, rosie rosenthal did assist in liberating those camps, though it would've been after the events shown this episode. idk if he saw one in that up-close way seen in this episode, but he could've (i should research this when i have time). plus, it would've felt weird Not having him acknowledge them at all. "shoe-horned" is an odd term to use here imo, as both scenes more-or-less center a jewish character (BoB's liebgott and MotA's rosie). the former show has survivors the characters can help, the latter shows no one left to help. the former has all of easy company there, the latter has rosie there all alone. rosie's scene felt deeply personal in that way. at the end of the day, both scenes are communicating different things. that doesn't make one better than the other when they aren't trying to be identical. (disclaimer, i'm not jewish, so i'd be interesting hearing from the perspective of someone who wrt whether or not they felt it was "shoe-horned")
i can understand if you've disliked the show post-episode 6 (and episode 6 was a very strong episode i'm ngl). eps 7 and 8 were weaker in many ways, even to me, so i get it. everyone's entitled to their own opinion (i'd be a hypocrite saying otherwise). just understand that this blog is run by someone who overall enjoys this show despite its flaws! basically, i encourage you to take this energy and make your own posts.
#masters of the air#hbo war#e9#asks#long post#masters of the air spoilers#mota spoilers#all the hbo war finales are different. i don't think MotA's is as strong but like#my fav hbo war show is still BoB and even Then i don't think it has a better finale than TP. and i dislike a lot of TP! like A Lot!#and Even Then we don't get a good idea about what happens to a lot of the minor-er characters in TP once they leave#anyone who isn't sledge or leckie (rip basilone) is hand-waved-'they went home'-away#not every show needs a sandlot ending w/ a voiceover going:#'[NAME] got really into the [INSERT DECADE] and no one ever saw him again' like they did to webster (rip webster)#and again! i'm mixed about the redtails. but i can Very Clearly See this show getting released without including them#which wouldve left many people (justifiably!) upset that they weren't shown when they were Literally there in the same pow camp#i'll give the hbo war team a lot of shit about a lot of things (despite the enduringly positive energy i try to keep up here)#but i Have to give MotA props for Trying. i don't see faux inclusion i just see it as not quite hitting the mark but an attempt was made#and i think that's worth Something given neither BoB or TP bothered trying#(like i think there was a missed opportunity in TP not mentioning what's happening to japanese americans on the home front)#this got away from me (i'm also opinionated) but while i can agree with you about how the show feels rushed#i do take issue with the idea that they were pretending to be inclusive. i'll blame money time and covid19 before i blame bad intention#maybe that's controversial here but it Is my blog. so.

omg niki that reply WAS atrocious!!!! shoot out in their bottom 5 hurt me 😭😭😭😭 like on one hand it's their opinion nobody needs to like the same things and agree on everything, esp w/ smth as subjective as music but hero??? follow??? i almost wanna block them myself lfjdks also i'll try to listen to if with u again for you i'll give it a fair shake ✊🏻😔
Lissa i shit u not i havent stopped thinking abt it…. like🙄🙄🙄im really trying not to sound crazy about this but if u dont like ‘shoot out’ ‘follow’ ‘hero’ or even ‘aligator’, are u sure u even like monsta x? Like????? We all have that one or two popular song that everyone loves but we hate/dont like but hating 4 of the most iconic monsta x songs that I’d say sort of define monsta x as a group is a major red flad imo kskdkdk
Again I’m trying not to make fun of them but their number 1 is ‘who do you love’😒 i liked the song when it came out but with everything that happened i could never rank it high in any ranking.
OH THAT WAS YOU? KJDKDKD YES PLEASE LISTEN TO IT😭😭😭 I remember having zero expectations for it but i almost cried when i finished the sont the first time… it’s so lovely….

The numerically-related spell I recited and wrote down incessantly in high school is kicking my ass and also may literally break my bones at some point in the near future.
#So I have this spell… I made it with so much feeling and vibes behind it but couldn’t specify exactly why I felt that way#or what the purpose of the spell was despite knowing every reference and mostly every facet of the symbolism#All I knew was “yes this feels right and I know it will work so I’m going to say it over and over again to make it do whatever I want”#It is related to certain numbers which have followed me everywhere since — You guessed it! — FOUR years ago#when it was TWENTY-TWENTY and I was SIXTEEN#Now it’s APRIL and I am TWENTY and soon it will be APRIL TWENTY-FOURTH TWENTY-TWENTY-FOUR#And I woke up really fucking sick on APRIL FOURTH of this year#And I took Japanese for enough years to know “shi” (four) also means “death” and is a very unlucky number over there#but the spell itself is supposed to be good (but in a really really weird way that only I could possibly enjoy)#and the source material on which I based the spell has lots of Japanese elements to it#I think I know how to interpret it here but idk#Oh and also I included this spell and it’s imagery EVERYWHERE (including in all the diaries and sketchbooks my parents destroyed)#Hell I even made my own knot magic on it… also destroyed#You know what happens when you destroy spell-related materials right? They get released. Into the universe.#So idk if this is going to be very good or very bad#But I haven’t said the spell aloud or at all in four years except for one time in my mind#because I’m kind of afraid of it now

ive never been an army but do you have any bts recommendations similar to boy in luv... I started listening to that recently and it's so good lol
i think i scoured all the albums lol i went back and listened to all of these to make sure they sounded similar. they're all MVs unless noted, in which case its just audio: YOUNGER BTS ('boy in luv era'): -no more dream -we are bulletproof pt. 2 -danger -war of hormone -N.O. -attack on bangtan (not an MV) -paldogangsan/'satoori rap' (not an MV) -jump (not an MV) [same album as BIL] -spinebreaker (not an MV) [same album as BIL]
2017ISH BTS: -fire -not today -dope -boyz with fun (not an MV) -baepsae (not an MV) -come back home [cover of a seo taji & boys song] -agust d (if you're sensitive to flashing lights don't watch this mv) [yoongi solo rap song, less of a match but it's fast/intense]
at this point their sound was shifting so it won't be an exact match (fire, not today, and dope are thee bts songs so i think they'd be the closest)
CURRENT BTS: -intro: persona [has a younger bts sound but it's shorter and rap] -mic drop (steve aoki ver.) -ON -dionysus (not an MV) -run bts (not an MV) -UGH! (not an MV)
current bts is softer even if the songs are 'intense', so depending on if you want a 1-1 match or just a general vibe, you might not like these. i would reccommend listening to all of them anyways

We (somewhat rightly) mock the 2000's era fansub translation notes for their otaku fixations and privileging of trivia over the media, but they should be understood as serving their purpose for a bit of a different era in the anime fandom. Take this classic:
Tumblr media
Like, its so obvious, right? Just say "pervert", you don't need the note! Which is true, for like a 'normie' audience member who just wants to watch A TV Show - but no one watching, uh *quick google* "Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne" in 1999 is that person. The audience is weebs, and for them the fact that show is Japanese is a huge selling point. They want it to feel as 'anime' as possible; and in the west language was one of the core signifiers of anime-ness. 2004 con-goers calling their friends "-kun" and throwing in "nani?" into conversations was the way this was done, and alongside that a lexicon of western anime fandom terminology was born. Seeing "ecchi" on the screen is, to this person, a better viewing experience - it enhances their connection to otaku identity the show is providing, and reinforces their shared cultural lexicon (Ecchi is now a term one 'expects' anime fans to know - a truth that translator notes like this simultaneously created and reflected).
But of course your audiences have different levels of otaku-dom, and so you can't just say 'ecchi' and call it a day - so for those who are only Level 2 on their anime journey, you give them a translation note. Most of the translation notes of the era are like this - terms the fansubber thought the audience might know well enough that they would understand it and want that pure Japanese cultural experience, but that not all of them would know, so you have to hedge. The Lucky Star one I posted is a great example of that:
Tumblr media
Its Lucky Star, the otaku-crown of anime! You desperately want the core text to preserve as much anime vocab as possible, to give off that feeling, but you can't assume everyone knows what a GALGE is - doing both is the only way to solve that dilemma.
This is often a good guideline when looking at old memetically bad fansubs by the way:
Tumblr media
This isn't real, no fansub had this - it was a meme that was posted on a wiki forum in 2007. Which makes sense, right? "Plan" isn't a Japanese cultural or otaku term, so there is no reason not to translate it, it doesn't deepen the ~otaku connection~.
Which, I know, I'm explaining the joke right now, but over time I think many have grown to believe that this (and others like it) is a real fansub, and that these sort of arbitrary untranslations just peppered fansub works of the time? It happened, sure, but they would be equally mocked back then as missteps - or were jokes themselves. Some groups even had a reputation for inserting jokes into their works, imo Commie Subs was most notable for this; part of the competitive & casual environment of the time. But they weren't serious, they are not examples of "bad fansubs" in the same way.
This all faded for a bunch of reasons - primarily that the market for anime expanded dramatically. First, that lead to professionally released translations by centralized agencies that had universal standards for their subs and accountability to the original creators of the show. Second, the far larger audience is far less invested in anime-as-identity; they like it, but its not special the way its special when you are a bullied internet recluse in 2004. They just want to watch the show, and would find "caring" about translation nuances to be cringe. And since these centralized agencies release their product infinitely faster and more accessibly than fansubs ever did, their copies now dominate the space (including being the versions ripped to all illegal streaming sites), so fansubs died.
Though not totally - a lot of those fansub groups are still around! Commie Subs is still kicking for example. They either do the weird nuance stuff, or fansub unreleased-in-the-west old or niche anime, or even have pivoted to non-anime Japanese content that never gets international release. But they used to be the taste-makers of the community; now they are the fringe devotees in a culture that has moved beyond them. So fansubs remain something of a joke of the 90's and 2000's in the eyes of the anime culture of today, in a way that maybe they don't deserve.

I've said this before, but Nintendo are definitely not going to release Mother 3 in the west. The logistics alone of fully localizing an old game, using development techniques that aren't used anymore are impractical. Not to mention all the brand unfriendly things that Mother 3 has, including gender hijinks, explicit drug use, and suicide.
Mother 3's English fan translation is easily accessible on PC and even on hacked 3DS. Plus the fact that Nintendo won't release it adds a mystique to it, right? It's this secret thing you have to hear about through Smash or word of mouth and seek out for yourself. Everyone who wants to play it has already played it or can play it right now, and people who are waiting for an official release to play it are going to be waiting forever. If you haven't played it yet and want to, take this post, plus the upcoming Japanese re-release as your reason to, because if you're not willing to pirate Mother 3, you're not ready to hear what Mother 3 has to say.
