If you don't mind me asking, I'm super curious about your design process. Are there any lore reasons behind choosing black horns and coloured teeth for your characters? Whether or not, I still think it's a really cool choice :0

It's a combination of both. lol

The anatomy of troll horns in my headcanon is similar to that of how deer antlers are I guess? With bone surrounded by a sort of velvety cartilage. And several nerve endings within the bones themselves sort of like teeth as well as within the skin. I don't think they shed their horns, however.

This alternate pigmentation can be a result of a natural trait, of being horror-touched, a stress-induced response or even tattoos. Tattoos and any alterations to horns in general are extremely painful in my view. It can also be due to an illness or condition.

I generally headcanon trolls’ teeth and nails to be a yellow-ish color, so if you see me coloring my trolls’ teeth like that I don’t mean to denote that they have bad hygiene or anything, that’s their natural color for me.

If I color teeth in a sort of pink or red hue, I just think it looks nice, really. I don’t currently have a stance on whether these fang/teeth pigmentations are natural or a body modification. Usually I do it to trolls who are particularly dangerous cannibals or general murderers, however:

With Prince, Cicero and Leeiam the fact that their fangs are bared, coupled with the hue is meant to be a sort of warning. It certainly draws attention doesn’t it? By extension, Mana’ah’s are also this hue due to how he once was, but I never drew his teeth, and they’re not on display without provocation. 

With Breakfast his teeth are a lighter pink and maybe would have gone to a darker hue if he grew up to be an extremely violent troll, but he didn’t. 

If the horns are black, however, there usually is a reason and I’ll note it below:

Black horns due to random mutation:

Erphos (With the way he acts trolls might assume his turned black from stress, though.) Breakfast Buttons Cardinal Shiver Orfeoh Marcel (The poison pattern is something he was born with and came with his ability.)

Black horns due to bloodline trait or genetic disposition:

Adonis and Nereus (Horror-touched bloodline.) Cardinal Axeron and Cardinal Stygia (Bloodline.) Cardinal Juuzou (Angel-Influenced bloodline.) Uriyen (Not exactly a troll.) Cinder (Basically a homunculus.) Clay (Angel-Influenced bloodline.) Fracture (Angel-Influenced bloodline.)

Congenital Condition:

Caeles and Caelum (Also the reason why their teeth are black..)

Horror-Touched/Angel-Influence:

Erouta (Horror-touched; Uriyen's fault.) Diviam (Horror-touched.) Sunnye (Angel-Influence) Angelo (Horror-touched.) Rokuro (Horror-touched. [Recent change due to things in his lore.])

Stress/Trauma-induced: 

Nicola (Grief following the slaughter of his 'family'.) Mana'ah (His upbringing in general.) Sylver (Childhood.) Cicero (Physical and mental strain from having a dead troll semi-possess him.) Cilian (Childhood.) Vaetuo (Physical strain and mental strain from his transformation into a rainbowdrinker, which took sweeps for him to revive.) Asphodel (Childhood, and also why his hair is white. His multi-colored teeth stem from his ancestor.) Aessyr (Discoloration from his own psiionics.)

Note: Some trolls like Prince and Sloth should have darker horns given their stories and what they've been through, but I consider the lack of change a telling of their methods of processing their experiences. Then with Fausix, the torture he went through did not happen over a long enough time period for his horns to change but the strain and damage on his psyche is still very present.

Trolls specifically? I'd say Arcais and Smash rn. Lanaen, too. If I'm feeling spicy.

Like period? The big bad in my universe is an ancient god named Thazilis, he's angry and the color of void. When he speaks you can hear the whispers and screams of the souls he's taken behind his voice.
