"Irony" is a perfect example of one mechanism of nuance decay, one I've seen a lot times but have never seen articulated. I'm hoping there is a fancy linguistics term for it.
So "irony" is most broadly defined as a drastic difference between how things appear and how things really are.
But most common ironic situations happen to be unexpected, coincidences, or juxtapositions of opposites. Note that those are not by themselves irony, they merely help create the conditions for irony. Irony is very specifically about the difference of what one might observe, expect, or understand, and what someone with greater insight would realize instead.
Couple of examples:
Graffiti on a Stop sign saying "don't deface stop signs" is ironic only because a naive, superficial, face-value, literal understanding of the message is directly opposite to the reality that the person behind the message actively chose to graffiti the stop sign. The explicit appearance is against defacing stop signs, the implicit reality is that the person was fine with defacing stop signs.
"Bob is known for his poetry. Ironically, his poetry was a small hobby, and his main pursuit was physics, where he made no significant contribution". This statement is correct only because when we know Bob made world-class and famous poetry, we intuit that Bob himself was primarily focused on poetry, and the non-obvious reality that he really valued something he's completely unknown for instead is very different from that appearance.
But because people learn words through context and examples when hearing the word used, and those uses as rarely accompanied with explicit explanation, for many people the meaning of the word "ironic" overlaps with, or just is, one or more of "coincidental", "unexpected", or "contradictory".
This is perfect mental environment for the actual meaning of the word "irony" to become slippery nuance. It starts out like the opposite of a language hole: instead of no language covering a spot in idea space it's too much language overlapping on it.
Too many words with too much overlap make it easy for the mind to slip by association from the meanings anchored by one word into the slightly different cognemes invoked by another word.
When two words match almost all of the same things, it actively harms our ability to see the nuanced differences between them, because conflating the two is almost always rewarded: if I call something "ironic", and it really is ironic but I misunderstand why it is, then I am right-on-accident but my brain can't know the difference if everyone responds positively.
This gives rise to - but be careful to not conflate it with - what in education circles is known as "double illusion of transparency" (this term has gotten some adoption in some other communities too): You think I understand the concept as you do because my use of language matches how you'd use language to express it, but really we just haven't ran into a situation where my lack or error of understanding would be revealed.
Anyway, double illusion of transparency is sometimes a result of what I'm talking about. Nuance decay is another result.
The specific thing I want to draw attention to is how the lack of sufficient distinction between terms contributes to that distinguishing nuance becoming slippery - and over time terms decay/collapse into the simplest concepts they represent.
This is especially pernicious when multiple words overlap a lot and we allow ourselves to think that the simpler words can just replace or substitute the more obscure and complex ones. They can't, because their very existence as separate words is supposed to function as a hint that there are nuances there which required distinction.
Someone coined and used that separate word precisely to try to cover a language hole, but the more the words match the same events, situations, people, or things, the more readily the overlap functions as a slide by which our interpretation slip down to the lower-nuance meaning.
TL;DR: when a term expresses a nuance, but that term has too much overlap with other less nuanced terms, it makes the nuance more slippery. That overlap makes it more likely that the language will undergo nuance decay, collapsing the nuanced term into just meaning the less nuanced term.

LT : Chapter 1
Oh honey, you gotta be more careful than that.
A hunter should never corner it’s prey, least it turn and retaliate. It was a nugget of wisdom that should be common sense; however, very few Decepticons seemed to live by it. Nighthawk found it hard to judge them for that. After all, once upon a time, he had thought himself to be a cunning young mech and jumped rashly into action without thinking through the consequences of his actions.
Energy is wasted on the youth. Ha! Only the most apathetic spoke in such ways. He was an old mech now and still found the energy to put forth his knowledge in the best ways he knew. Energy be damned, he’d find it or make it, one way or another.
With a brash grin rarely seen on his face the least few years of the war, the medical officer steered the Jaguar One carefully around the lone floating structure. Every reading gave off a distinct lack of life form signatures. There was no ping in reaction to his own to access the vessel; no sign of weapons coming online or defense systems reacting to his presence. Left on it’s own and now a floating ghost town in the middle of nowhere.
To his left, Nighthawk could feel the exhaling warm breath upon his arm whilst he clutched the controls. Beneath a placid expression void of expression, he felt an internal rush of comfort. The seeker released controls with one servo just long enough to put a supportive touch against his ally’s shoulder without sparring a glance.
There was an appreciative echo in the throat of the mech to his side. Only then did he allow a glimpse away from the Revenge II. The dragon’s gaze upon him appeared mildly concerned and partly inquisitive.
Nighthawk gave a single nod to the metallic wyvern. It returned the gesture with a glint of understanding within it’s red optics.
Grasping the steering module once more, Nighthawk moved his craft into closer proximity of the former Decepticon ship. The shuttle appeared worse than he imagined now that he got a good look at it. He’d spotted it at a safe distance for quite some time now; trailing and always tracking a safe distance behind the Rising Star. He had fallen back when they’d become suspicious and sent out parties from the starship, and now it seemed they decided to drop their cargo behind.
Clearly this Neutroboost wasn’t the most intelligent of mechs. Nighthawk scoffed softly to himself. If he’d been outrunning the law, he wouldn’t have bothered to lug it around this long, anyway. Too much dead weight. Not to mention the prisoners he was technically hold onto. It would only be a matter of time before someone likely turned to bite the servo that fed it. Or, in their case, likely was hardly caring for them at all.
It was going to be an enormous pleasure to connect fist to faceplate with that detestable creature. True he may only know what information had been provided to him during the time spent with Blackout and Novastrike, but he sounded disgustingly similar to another well-known Decepticon traitor. Backstabbing his superior officer, twisting truths and lies, succumbing to a darkness in his soul to turn on every servo offered to him.
That and perhaps he’d found a little too much to like about that femme. She was a soft and considerate curiosity in a world of darkness. She’d gained favor the first day he’d spotted her, on his own hunt. An Autobot helping a Decepticon. Novastrike was easy to listen to and believe.
How bizarre his world had become since those days.
Wreckage drifted in every direction around the Jaguar One as he piloted slowly towards the Revenge II. Soft bursts of his thrusters maneuvered him through debris with care. On the off chance the idiot decided to leave any mines or explosives setting among the ruin, he didn’t wish to be added to the causalities left behind.
The lowered docking hatch had been left wide open for him. Suspicious. Tentatively, he glided his ship into the behemoth with caution.
Drawing in a sharp breath, the dragon spoke quietly: “Do you think it’s safe to go in, boss?”
“I haven’t a clue,” Nighthawk answered honestly. “We have a good vapor trail still to follow the Rising Star; too far for a solid signature but we know a direction to follow. We can allow ourselves a moment of study. There is an off-chance they left something here we could make use of.”
The dragon snorted, his helm-horns tilting just slightly back.
Nighthawk raised an optic ridge as he tiled his helm towards his apprentice. “You disagree?”
“I’m just worried we’re walking straight into a trap, Nighthawk.”
A quiet chuckle emerged from the seeker. It sounded a bit rusty and ill-used, but light-sparked.
“I’m not going to let an opportunity to gather intelligence or supplies stop me, Infiltrator, you know that. I’ve been doing this for years. I think I can manage.”
As he spoke, the medic leaned smugly back in his chair and laced his digits in front of his chassis. His chin was raised and a light flickered behind his softened purple visor as he smiled. There was a sense of calm and pride that was undeniable in his tone that echoed in his thoughts.
With a look of doubt forming in a small frown on the corner of Infiltrator’s maw, he turned to trot for the back of the Jaguar One. To himself, he hissed a few words that Nighthawk suspected he wasn’t meant to hear.
“Don’t get too proud, boss.”
He thought to counter, but left it be. A ventilated sigh escaped the mech as he moved a servo to his forehead for a moment. Infiltrator had always been a true friend; always concerned about his well-being. He seemed a bit more on edge for his well-being ever since their run in with Lord Megatron on planet Earth. Every time he limped or stumbled, the dragon was there against his leg like a support. Every decision he made that felt a little too-quickly devised, there was a color of uncertainty on the dragon’s expression.
So he hadn’t been utilizing his hunter instincts for a few years. One didn’t just lose that sort of instinct and training.
Maybe you’re just trying to relive your glory days, his thoughts chided at himself.
Nighthawk mentally waved off the thought. He didn’t have time or room to doubt himself. Hesitation lead to mistakes. He couldn’t afford mistakes.
He climbed out of his chair and went to fetch a few precautions; a set of frag grenades and some fusion grenades to his arsenal tranquilizer darts and surgical precision wrist blades. With a shrug, he decided to grab a neutron assault rifle he’d traded for and stored for emergency use as well. If there was anything on board or anyone, he probably wouldn’t be needing any other weapons or sniper utilities. A quick escape to his ship would suffice.
Armed and ready, Nighthawk strode out to meet Infiltrator; activating the magnetic false gravity in his pedes as he did. The dragon had already made quick work to secure the area; pads light on the floor as he moved swiftly to and fro the room in search for evidence of any traps. The moment Nighthawk stepped out, he gave pause to turn his helm around and nodded.
They progressed the Revenge II slowly. Each hall checked and scanned for snares and hidden ambushes. As they walked, his scanners on and glimpsing around every corner and checking every seam where metal fused and bolted to metal, Nighthawk took notes and captures images of the condition of the ship for reference. The further in they moved, the more signs of battle there were to be found from the inside just as there had been on the out.
Dried energon splatters flecked and blotted from ceiling to wall to floor. Missing sections of the ship’s walls; sometimes deep enough to lead to the exterior where you could see the distance stars. Scorch marks here. Slices in the walls there. A nearly faded but still functionally noticeable scent of tarnish, oxidization, and decayed lifeforms.
Poking his head into the next room, Infiltrator spoke loudly: “This one’s empty too.”
“Let’s check it for anything, just to be safe,” Nighthawk muttered.
Stepping inside, Nighthawk skimmed their surroundings. It appeared to be a former recharge area where a lot of bots had bunked together. Instead of berths, they had recharge chambers that stood vertical at a sixty degree angle. Efficient for stuffing as many bots as possible in one area.
Stepping to the closest one, Nighthawk scanned it for signs of life. When the results came back negative, he went to skim his digits lightly around the chamber. Nothing of interest.
“Uh… boss?”
The nervous chirp of Infiltrator’s voice had him raising his helm.
The dragon’s trail was whipping nervously behind him. In one of the chambers, a clearly offlined specimen was stuffed inside. Locked behind the door, their mouth hung slack open and their posture half crumpled.
Knees creaking, Nighthawk moved to stand and brush himself off, wincing.
“What is it? He looks offline to me.”
“Yeah but- don’t you find it a bit off-putting? The mech’s just been shoved in there.”
“Hmm… I suppose… We can always investigate if it would put your processor at ease-”
“Nighthawk,” Infiltrator said quietly, “I think he was pushed in there after he was offlined.”
“What difference would that make?” droned the older mech somewhat tiredly as he approached. From a look around the pod, indications would suggest that there wasn’t a struggle in or outside of the chamber. No scratch marks for escape, no energon, no weapons or flaked armor or rust or scuffs on the floor.
“Who would take the time to put someone in a recharge chamber when they’re offline?” Infiltrator inquired, his voice both uneasy and curious.
“I don’t know,” Nighthawk vented. “Maybe someone was honoring this particular mech. Who am I to say.”
“Do you think we should-”
Before Infiltrator could grasp the external door latch, Nighthawk’s servo shot out to grab his clawed pad. The dragon froze, turning his helm up to him.
“Leave them be.”
“You don’t think we should-”
“I don’t want to chance a rigged chamber,” Nighthawk said quietly. “We can’t see behind the mech. There could be an attachment to the door to some device behind them. Let’s just leave the offlined to rest. We can’t do anything for them, anyway.”
There was something sparkbreaking about seeing the look of hurt in Infiltrator’s haunted regard. He was still young and spry in some ways. Wandering into unknown territory to follow his inquisitive side and satisfy his mind. Trying to fix what was long since too broken to be fixed any longer.
I was just as foolish, once.
No. He wouldn’t allow himself to stew in sorrow and self-pity right now. You simply couldn’t save everyone. And you certainly couldn’t bring the dead back to life.
With reluctance, Infiltrator nodded and moved to follow him in inspecting the remainder of the room. Other than the one oddly placed mech in a recharge chamber, the room was otherwise empty. No secretly placed weapons, no discrete datapads, nothing.
They left the room in peace, and the offlined to their eternal slumber.
Much further in the depths of the ship; in a larger passageway big enough to fit a Predacon, they came across a war zone.
“What do you think happened here?” Infiltrator asked with awe and wonder. The amazement turned quickly to a cringed horror as he mistakenly slipped into a crater in the floor; not looking to where he’d been placing his pedes.
Nighthawk said nothing. Analyzing the room, he let his gut do the talking. A larger extensive fight. The warped floor where Infiltrator had nearly tripped in caused by a tremendous weight- looking around, he decided it was likely from the rather massive mech or from a weapon that had went missing. Another massive indention in the floor appeared too weak to sustain weight if they tried walking on it. That was definitely caused by a weapon; the pattern it left too destructive, too wide-spread.
A dented wall.
Shattered pieces of metal everywhere. Unrecognizable if it was from the floor, the walls, or the lusterless gray forms twisted and mangled on the floor. Half smelted and hardened metal as far as the optic could see.
His senses were overloaded with the smell of bad energon. It was everywhere. The entire area had a dull bluish sheen.
Stepping around the turmoil and chaos, Nighthawk’s optics were drawn to what little color there still was. Armor that had been ripped free of corpses before their demise. He bent at the knee, reaching down to brush aside an energon-splattered red section to pick up a small, insignificant shard of white. His digits turned it over in his servo carefully.
To his right, Infiltrator stiffly walked over to join him. Utterly silent; even the mech’s ventilation system was temporarily shutdown to avoid inhaling too much of the odor from the foul area.
“Boss?” the assistant swallowed dryly.
“Novastrike’s,” Nighthawk stated flatly, clutching the metal in his fist.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure. It matches the structure of her armor and it’s metal alloys. I can tell by touch. And according to the curvature, I’d say it was likely a section from the armor on her arm.”
The wyvern remained silent as Nighthawk went to subspace the piece of metal. He pushed himself to stand despite his aching knee joint and continued walking slowly down the corridor.
The massacre only grew more unspeakable and violent as they went. Hard to identify what belonged to who. Nighthawk could easily identify this hurricane, however. It was maddeningly obvious. This was Blackout’s work. A frenzy of savagery and violence; a wake of destruction and mayhem.
He had made it a mission to tear apart everything in his path, no matter the cost. It was cold and disturbing; the work of a bloodthirsty killer.
Nighthawk felt nothing. Not a sense of remorse, not a shred of humility or fear. No regret or pity. He felt nothing at all.
They made their way to the upper deck which served as a partial observatory almost; a ridiculously high ceiling and every square inch from top to side to side all panned with thick glass. A control center was square center in the room, with various terminals branching off around the entire area. Worker bots probably once slaved away in the room, following commands that only lead to the downfall of their kind. Recklessly throwing themselves in harms way, following the orders of insane individuals.
Nighthawk curled his lip and sniffed rudely. To the Pit with all of them.
A walk around the room revealed about as much as any other room they’d bothered with. Nothing had been left behind that could come of use. Infiltrator had insisted upon trying to dismantle and take parts from the command modules, but Nighthawk turned him down. It was a waste of time. Besides, there was no telling what might still be bugged and logged in the system. Best not chance it.
“See about taking a spare data capsule and extracting what you can from the system. Logs, updates, who worked here; anything old or new. But make sure it’s empty. We don’t need to lose information because someone left fail safes to keep thieves out.”
“I’ll get on it, boss.”
While his subordinate got to work, Nighthawk stepped just outside to study the area further. He documented some photography of the area, noting a rather large pede step made by someone who I made tracks through energon. It didn’t appear to be Blackout’s but had the same stature of someone largely built.
A ping to his private comm signal had his posture straightening halfway through as he busily snapped off a couple pictures.
“What is it, Infiltrator?”
“It’s done boss- but I thought to let you know, there’s some footage I’ve got on here too. And it seems pretty recent.”
“Excellent. I’m coming back. Let’s see if we can’t access them via the command module first before we check the rest of the ship.”
“Roger.”
He pivoted on heel and made his way back down the hall towards the bridge. Mentally, he made note of the direction the track pattern had been heading in for future reference. There was plenty of ship to explore, but his instinct was telling him to follow where those prints lead.
Nighthawk entered the control room with a stride of purpose as he approached Infiltrator and his rigging up to the commander’s terminal. He gave a grim look up to his mentor, before turning back to his datapad and tapping his clawtips across a few keystrokes.
They looked up as a screen blimped into existence before them. The quality of the imagery was sharp. Not a bad security system. There were bots walking around inmass, hard at work it seemed.
“When was this taken?” the seeker mused.
“A few thousand deca-cycles ago. Here, let me speed through these logs looking for anything more recent.”
“Try a camera in the main hall while you’re at it.”
“Right.”
Images flashed faster than the processor could configure. Nighthawk watched with interest, folding his arms in front of his chassis. He resisted the urge to lean against the console for his bad leg as he waited.
“Stop. Stop! Stop- there.”
Frantically pressing buttons, Infiltrator paused the footage and hit playback as he looked up.
Both mechs grimaced.
“By the Primes, Blackout.”
“I don’t know whether I should be grateful or upset there’s no audio,” Nighthawk muttered. “It could be useful to hear for anything else we find but in this case...”
“I’d like to keep my audios from breaking from the cannon fire,” Infiltrator disagreed in a whisper, skimming through the logs prior and after the encounter.
As the screen skipped along various time frames, Nighthawk caught a glimpse of a towering shape between glimpses of the feed. They had to be around Blackout’s height; maybe less. He tried to make out a definition of their pede’s shape and dimensions, but it was difficult with the film moving so swiftly.
He opened his mouth to ask Infiltrator to go back as the screen extended into a lengthy stretch of nothing but watching the dead bodies and some fuzziness, when another figure appeared.
“This is a few cycles ago,” Infiltrator piped up, frowning deeply.
With screen paused, the twosome leaned into the holographic screen. The mech had a shady appearance about them; shifty dark blue optics, a sneaky posture and sly grin.
“What’s he carrying?”
Terror and understanding slowly crept into Nighthawk’s faceplate.
“We have to get off this ship,” he hoarsely choked. “Now.”
“Boss bot? What is it-?”
A horrific bone-chilling screech echoed down the hallway in response. Nighthawk’s energon went cold as he exchanged a look with his apprentice.
His wrist blades extended with a flick as he gave a firm nod down at the wvyren.
“Take the data collector and whatever else you have, and make for the ship. I’ll be right behind you.”
“Nighthawk, I don’t like-”
“Go,” he hissed. “And for Primus’ sake, whatever you do, don’t slow down.”

In Response To “Queer” Discourse: Not Using a Slur To Refer To Ourselves Isn’t a Privilege
So tonight I read this post and I am completely shocked. I tried to reply on the post, but Tumblr fucked up, which is a blessing because I am able to write this post in a more clear and coherent manner. 
What this post will be is a breakdown of the issues I commonly see discourse about reclaiming the word “queer”, specifically amongst pro-”queer” people. I believe that these arguments often make a few very big mistakes, and I’m here to correct them.
I don’t expect anyone to read the whole thing, but if you’re going to reply to this, you better have read it. And while I am trying to write in the most “professional” manner, I’m just an angry girl at a computer late at night, so if I make any mistakes, just think about what I probably meant and go with that, because this bitch is tired. 
1) The most important thing to remember about people who refuse to reclaim the word “queer” is that there is a reason for this. 
First of all, it is still commonly used as a slur in MANY places. 
Second, the word originally has very negative definitions. Weird, strange, odd, spoiled, sick. This is why it was used as a slur in the first place. 
Third, countless people in our community (even the young ones) have directly experienced violence involving this word.
Let’s use my personal history with this word as an example. I accidentally came out when I was 11, and a family member verbally abused me for years using this word. When I got older and tried to defend myself, he physically attacked me. I have PTSD because of this, and being directly referred to a “queer” or being called “a queer” can and has triggered flashbacks of this event. 
I am just one of many with a story like this. 
2) They imply or state that cis lesbians and gay men have it easier than or are privileged over cis bisexuals.
This is 100% false. It completely ignores the complex issues that both gay and bisexual people face.
Bisexual people face a specific struggle for not only being attracted to the same gender, but being attracted to multiple genders. 
Gay people face a specific struggle for not only being attracted to the same gender, but being attracted to the same gender to the exclusion of others.
A quick way to demonstrate this is a look at how people often react to bi and gay people coming out. Bi people hear a lot of, “pick a side”, “you’re selfish”, “you’re confused”. Gay people hear, “but if you’ve never been with the opposite gender how do you know?”, “you’re being close-minded for only being with one gender”*, and things like that. We both get the standard, “oh that’s gross”, “oh you’re a sinner” bullshit. (*Yes gay people do get told that.). 
There are specific struggles for being bisexual and being gay, and instead of making shit up, we should be supporting each other for the issues the others face, and supporting each other for our shared experiences. 
2.5 A lot of people seem to think that being a gay man and being a lesbian are the same. 
They are not. Lesbians have a very specific struggle as being: a) women, b) attracted to women, and c) not attracted to men. Our position as women who are not interested in men means we face a different sort of violence and oppression as gay men. Yes, we have many shared experiences, but we are not the same. 
3) They assume that all people who are uncomfortable with the word are “privileged” cis gays and bisexuals, and that everyone who reclaims it is less privileged and has a more complicated identity.
It’s worth again noting that I am writing this in direct response to another post. Here are some quotes from OP and a commenter:
“Saying “I’m gay/lesbian/bi” is pretty simple. Just about everyone knows what you mean, and you quickly establish yourself as a member of a community. Saying “I’m a trans nonbinary bi woman who’s celibate due to dysphoria and possibly on the ace spectrum”… not so much. You’re lucky to find anyone who understands even half of that, and explaining it requires revealing a ton of personal information. The appeal of “queer” is being able to identify yourself without profiling yourself. It’s welcoming and functional terminology to those who do not have the luxury of simplified language and occupy complicated identities. *That’s* why people use it - there are currently not alternatives to express the same sentiment.”

“There’s another dimension that always, always gets overlooked in contemporary discussions about the word “queer:” class. The last paragraph here reminds me of a old quote: “rich lesbians are ‘sapphic,’ poor lesbians are ‘dykes’.” Bourgeois gays and lesbians already had “the luxury of language” to describe themselves - normalized through struggle, thanks to groups like the Gay Liberation Front. Everyone else, from poor gays and lesbians to bi and trans people and so on, had no such language. These people were the ones for whom social/economic assimilation was not an option.”
I do understand, and almost completely agree with OP. The commenter... not so much. 
First of all, almost everyone I have met in real life spaces who uses the word queer is a cis gay or bisexual person. I’m not saying that my experience is universal, I’m just making an observation. Similarly, I have met many people with more complicated identities (bi trans people, ace gay men, nonbinary people) who do not use the word. And, I’m an ace lesbian... people find that hard to understand. Doesn’t mean I want to use that word.
Second... Oh lord. The implication that if you are a gay or lesbian who does not use the q word, you are probably upper class. This is just wrong. I don’t know how to else to state it. Maybe it’s right somewhere, but I can guarantee it’s wrong for a majority of places in the world.
First of all, I am a lesbian who is by no means rich or bourgeois. I am a poor girl who has struggled her entire life and lived in very poor neighbourhoods. Off the top of my head, I can think of a bisexual women, a gay man, and a trans gay man I know from similar areas that do not use the word queer. 
Second, many of cis gay and bisexual people I’ve met who use the word queer are ones who went to private schools, are supported by their parents, and are otherwise upper to upper middle class. 
Then there’s the implication that rich communities are more educated or accepting of our identities... Many upper class families are incredibly religious. Many upper class families are insistent on “traditional families”. These families often cut off their children who come out, and this can force their children into... guess what... the poor classes where social assimilation is apparently so much harder (but where they often find acceptance, because many lower class families are accepting and loving and educated.) I just don’t think that kind of distinction should be made when we’re talking about this word.
4) We’re not taking anything away from you while asking for you to keep your language respectful. 
Time and time again, I see people acting as though those who do not use the q word are somehow oppressing them. 
Nobody is saying that you shouldn’t use it for yourself. Nobody is saying that you can’t use it in your groups. 
We are simply asking that you do not refer to us as “queer”. This means not directly calling us queer, and not referring to us as a part of the “queer community”. Is our comfort in our own spaces worth less than you saving a few syllables? Is our comfort worth less than a word?
And people who say queer is a slur? Say that because it is. It was, and it still is. Don’t go on a huge rant about how we’re calling your identity a slur, or we’re forcing you to feel oppressed by it, or whatever. The whole point of reclaiming a slur is that... it IS a slur. When you use that word to refer to yourselves, you cannot ignore the history associated with it. The fact that many ID with it in spite of and BECAUSE it is a slur. They’re making it there’s. That’s what reclamation is. That’s where the power comes from. Don’t go tell me that me saying it’s a slur is incorrect. That’s just ignorant. 
In summary: Stop making shit up and over-thinking the issue surrounding this word. Stop acting like people who don’t use the q slur are privileged. We don’t avoid it because of our class or our specific labels. We avoid it because it does NOT empower us like it does you. We avoid it because many of us have trauma associated with it. My PTSD isn’t a privileged, you idiots. 
Go learn how to think critically and stop making up bullshit discourse and bringing other issues into this discussion because you lack the respect to be sensitive when referring to others in this community.

Strategy 1: Negotiate optimal conditions with suppliers
We have already said that the retailer, who buys many articles at the same time, receives better conditions from the outset. In order to compensate for this disadvantage, you must negotiate with your suppliers in a particularly decisive and convincing manner. The focus here must always be on the awareness that although you do not purchase and pay for any goods in advance, you can also achieve considerable purchase quantities in the course of a fiscal year.
How high they are depends on the conditions you are granted. The cheaper you buy yourself, the cheaper you can offer your products. And your prices are a decisive factor in determining how many customers decide to buy from you. In this respect, your negotiating skills quickly become a decisive success factor, which you should never leave unused under any circumstances.
Our tip: Use every opportunity to negotiate better terms with your suppliers. Have regular discussions and take up as an occasion, for example, increasing purchase quantities, the emergence of new suppliers on the market, innovative product developments, the end of the year or certain trade fairs, exhibitions or other events. Start negotiations with clear price expectations and always keep an eye out for alternative manufacturers or wholesalers who are willing to offer you even better conditions.

Strategy 2: Consistent concentration on added value
Today’s modern consumer is no longer satisfied with the fact that you, as an online retailer, provide him with a handful of products at a reasonable price and send them to him as a result of an order. The customer meanwhile attaches great importance to the fact that his preferred dealer offers him a clear added value. The competition is huge and therefore consumers have the freedom to choose where they want to shop. Traders therefore have to come up with something today if they want a good market share.
These can be exclusive products, particularly good prices, an outstanding service or a shop page with a distinct information content, to name just a few examples. So be aware at an early stage that you have to offer your visitors and customers one or the other added value in order to clearly and noticeably increase your chances on the market.
Our tip: When it comes to added value for your customers, patent recipes can hardly be developed. The different target groups are simply too different and cannot be addressed and inspired by the same measures. In this respect, you cannot avoid an intensive engagement with your customers and their wishes and needs. Analyze exactly which service features, information, promotions or events your customers are particularly interested in and include these elements in your shop strategy.

Strategy 3: Focus on products with special properties
Our next strategy will focus on the products you offer in your shop. However, it should not be a question of how well certain articles are received by your customers. Instead, we want to ask ourselves what these products can do for you as a retailer. For example, an article with a low return rate is of particular advantage to you. Especially as a DropShipping dealer, you are often more affected by the effort and costs of returning your customers than your classic competitors.
Even very large and bulky products with high shipping costs are very interesting for DropShipping dealers. Here the costs for transport are incurred only once, so that the total expenditure is much better. As a DropShipper you should always pay attention to whether certain products are associated with specific advantages from which you can benefit.
Our tip: When it comes to new and interesting products, you should keep your eyes open when you go around the world. As desirable as it is to maintain a stable and fruitful relationship with regular suppliers: Sometimes this concentration on a few partners also leads to a limited view of new products. Be sure to get regular inspiration from sources outside your network. Expand your assortment again and again and add new suppliers to your pool.

Strategy 4: Maximum automation of standardized processes
DropShipping concepts are always based on the basic approach of keeping costs and effort as low as possible. The renunciation of a purchase with a pronounced merchandise risk or of an own warehouse with correspondingly high costs are good examples of this. If you want to increase this potential even further, then you should think about automating processes. How about, for example, if your shop automatically displays only those products that are actually available from your supplier?
Or if your system would inform the respective supplier independently about an incoming order and send it with all relevant information to the wholesaler or manufacturer? In this case, you could once again significantly change your individual workload and thus also your profit. As a DropShipping retailer you should always try to use such potentials consistently in order to optimize your profit more and more in the course of time.
Our tip: You should assess your own technical understanding particularly critically and ask yourself how good you are at recognizing technical innovations or perhaps even developing the ideas yourself. If you find that technology is not one of your strong points, then you should look for an experienced IT technician who can advise you in this respect. The more workflows are automated, the more positive your profits will be.

Introduction Marketing is important for your career. I don't have to justify this; according to a recent survey I saw, 91% of you already agree. The more common doubt people have is in their ability to market themselves well. They see "Tech Celebrities", and then they look at themselves, and they say: "I'm not like that, when I put out a blogpost I don't get a billion likes," or "I don't want to be like them, that seems hard." The mistake here is equating Marketing with Celebrity. It's like saying your favorite restaurant shouldn't bother trying because McDonald's exists. They're two different (but related) things! You are a product. You work really hard on making yourself a great product. You owe it to yourself to spend some time on your Marketing even if you don't want to be a "Celebrity". Like it or not, people want to put you in a box. Help them put you in an expensive, high-sentimental-value, glittering, easy to reach box. Preferably at eye level, near Checkout, next to other nice looking boxes. It's not that hard to be better than 95% of devs at Marketing. The simple fact is that most devs don't do the basic things that people tell them to do. I think this has two causes: It's not code. Code is black and white. Marketing is shades of gray. A lot of advice is very generic. "Blog more". Devs often need more help transpiling Business Talk to actionable instructions. Let me try. You Already Know What Good Personal Marketing Is You may not feel confident in practicing good marketing, but you should realize you are being marketed at ALL. THE. TIME. Therefore you can be a world class expert in marketing that resonates with you. Step 1 is identifying the kind of marketing you already agree with. That's the kind that you can practice - not that other scammy, sleazy, invasive, privacy destroying kind. You've almost certainly already benefited from good marketing - by finding out about something from someone somewhere, that registered a hook in your mind, that eventually drove you to check it out, and now you cannot function without it. And you certainly want to benefit in the other direction - you want to be that thing that others find out about from someone somewhere. You want to register hooks in people's minds. You want to drive people to check you out. And you want people to prioritize working with you. One constraint you have that other marketers wish they had, is that you don't have to market to the whole world. You can target specifically the audiences you want to work for, and no more than that - meaning, as long as you are well-known in those circles, you don't need a public presence at all. Your conversion rate will be higher, and your stress probably lower (as will be your luck surface area). Personal Branding The topic of Marketing Yourself is pretty intertwined with Personal Branding. If you're like me, you've never really thought about the difference until right now. Think of yourself as a plain, unmarked can of soda. Branding would slap distinctive logo and colors on the can. And then Marketing is responsible for getting you, the freshly minted can of Coca Cola, in front of people. Branding is the stuff that uniquely identifies you. Marketing just gets your awesome in front of people. Of course, it helps marketing to have strong branding. This is why they are correlated. In fact, the strongest branding creates its own market. You don't want a laptop, you want a Macbook. You don't want an electric vehicle, you want a Tesla. I could list more examples, but I trust you understand. It's really easy to sell to a market in which you are the only seller. Almost literally shooting fish in the barrel. Nobody can compete with you at being you. The other wonderful feature of personal branding is that it is entirely up to you to create stuff that uniquely identifies you. There's no store somewhere from which you pick a brand off the shelf and put it on like a new coat. You create it from thin air, with the full dimensionality of all human personality has to offer. 7 billion humans on Earth doesn't even come close to exhausting the possible space of unique selling points you can pick. Picking a Personal Brand Your Personal Brand is how people talk about you when you're not in the room. So naturally, one way to start picking a brand is to listen to the one people naturally chose for you. Caution: you may not like what you hear! That's ok! That's what we're trying to fix. Personal Anecdote Time! If you can get a friend to tell it to you straight, good. If you can get some people on a podcast talking about you without you there, good. Or, like me, you can accidentally eavesdrop on a conversation. I swear I did this unintentionally - the first time I found out I had established an incredibly strong personal brand was when I was at a house party with 20 friends and friends of friends. While in a small group, I overheard someone behind me talking about me. They introduced me as "that guy that preaches Learn In Public". Then, at a later hour, I heard another person introduce me without me there. Then, again, when joining a new group, a third person introduced me the exact same way. I don't consider myself a personal branding expert. But I understood instantly that I had pulled off a very important feat - which was to write so much about a topic that multiple people instantly associate me with that topic. It's not critical that they say it in the exact same way, as that can be a bit creepy/culty, but it's good enough to use the same terms. If you want a more relatable example, think about how you would introduce your list of 5 people to a colleague, and compare that with how your 5 people introduce themselves. Anything But Average There are other aspects of my personal brand that don't get as much attention. But I bring it up front and center when it is relevant. I changed careers at 30. I used to be in Finance. I served as a Combat Engineer in the Army. I am from Singapore. I speak Mandarin. I've written production Haskell code. I sing Acapella. I am a humongous Terry Pratchett fan (GNU Terry Pratchett). I love Svelte and React and TypeScript. I am passionate about Frontend/CLI tooling and developer experience. I listen to way too many podcasts. The list goes on. But I have this list cold. I know exactly what parts of me spark interest and conversation. Therefore I can sustain interest and conversation longer, and people know when to call on me. You should keep a list too - know your strengths and unfair advantages. What I do NOT consider my personal brand is the stuff that doesn't differentiate me at all. For example, when asked about my hobbies, I deflect extremely quickly. I identify as a "Basic Bro" - I have my PS4, and Nintendo Switch, I like Marvel movies and watch the same Netflix shows you watch. Just like the million other Basic Bros like me. Totally basic. Totally boring. NOT a personal brand. In fact anything not "average" is a good candidate for inclusion. In particular: Diversity is strength. Adversity is strength. Weakness is strength. Nothing is off limits - the only requirements are that you be comfortable self identifying with your personal brand, AND that it evokes positive emotions as a result. I'm serious about that second part - You don't want trolling or outrage or cruel sarcasm to be your brand, nor do you want to bum people out all the time. Entertain, Educate, Inspire, Motivate instead. Identity + Opinions What I did accidentally, you can do intentionally. A nice formula for a personal brand is Identity + Opinions. A personal brand based solely on who you are, doesn't really communicate what you're about. A personal brand based solely on what you do, is quite... impersonal. People like knowing a bit of both, you should give it to them. You can be: the Mormon that teaches JavaScript Testing the Theater Nerd that loves Cloud Computing the Knitter that encourages Accessibility the Pianist that evangelizes State Machines (thanks to schwayse on my livestream for suggesting this one) In the right circles, there are exactly 1 person for each of these I just listed. I don't even have to say who they are. Identity doesn't have to be so personal if you're uncomfortable with it. Professional affiliations work. You can be "That Applitools Gal that created Test Automation University" or "That Googler that maintains RxJS" or "That Coursera Guy that loves GraphQL". It's just a little awkward when you eventually leave. I really want to give you more hints on this, but I'm afraid if I gave more examples I might limit your imagination. Don't even take this formula as a given. It's just one template. Consistency Humans love consistency. Developers REALLLLY love consistency. Here's an idea of how much Humans love consistency. We often want people who are famous for doing a thing, to come on to OUR stage, and do the thing. Then they do the thing, and we cheer! Simple as that. There's so much chaos in the world and having some cultural touchstones that never change is comfort and nostalgia and joy bundled up into one. Here's Seth McFarlane being prodded to do the voice of Kermit the Frog and Stewie from Family GUy - something he's done a billion times on a billion talk shows - but he does it anyway and we love it anyway. We LOVE when people Do The Thing! Similarly, when we market ourselves, we should be consistent. People love seeing the same names and faces pop up again (Caveat: you should mainly be associated with positive vibes when you do this). I recommend taking consistency to an extreme level. We used to do this offline with business cards. Online, our profiles have become not only our business cards, but also our faces. The majority of people who see you online will never see you in person. In most platforms, your profile photo is "read" before your username. Your username is in turn read before your message. Your message is read more than any link you drop. And so on. Therefore I strongly recommend: Photo. Take a good photo and use the same photo everywhere. A professional photographer is worth it, but even better can be something with a good story, or an impressive venue. If possible, try to show your real face, and try to smile. This puts you ahead of ~50% of users already who don't understand the value of this. Companies spend millions on their logos - why shouldn't you spend some time on it? We are irrationally focused on faces, and we really like it when people smile at us. Thankfully, because it's just a photo, it costs us nothing to smile at everybody all the time. It's a really easy way to associate your face with positive emotions. And when we see you pop up on multiple different platforms with the same face, we light up! The emotion completely transfers, and the branding is nonverbal but immediate. Real Name. Show your real, professional name if possible, unless your username is your working name. This works especially well in anonymous platforms like Reddit and Hacker News, because you are taking an additional step of de-anonymizing yourself. People respect this. Username. Your username should be your name if possible (so people can guess it), or failing which, something you intimately identify with. You should probably have the same one on most platforms, so that people can find you/tag you easily. Some, like myself, will simply use their usernames as their working names for ever. This can be a branding opportunity as well, similar to how music artists adopt mononyms and how fighter pilots adopt callsigns. Words. You should consistently associate yourself with a small set of words. Where a bio is allowed, you should have those words prominently displayed. For example, it doesn't take a lot to show up whenever SVG Animation or React and TypeScript are mentioned. You can set Google Alerts or Tweetdeck filters for this, and before long you'll just get associated. When you have your own words, like a catchphrase or motto, and it catches on, that is yet another level of personal branding. You will have made it when people start making fun of you. I'm not 100% serious, but I'm at least a little bit serious: Can people make memes of you? If so, that's a personal brand. All this personal branding will be 10x more effective when you have a Domain. You Need a Domain You Need a Domain. I mean this in both ways: Set up a site at yourname.com that has all your best work Pick a field that you are About. The first is hopefully obvious - instead of putting all your work on a platform somebody else owns, like Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn or other industry blog, have it primarily discoverable on your site/blog. This builds your site as a destination and lets you fully control your presentation and narrative - even off-site, on Google. Having a distinctive site design is yet another point of personal branding that, because you are a dev, costs basically nothing. People come to my site and they remember my scrollbars. But the second meaning deserves more introspection: I am asking you to plant your flag. Put up your personal bat signal. Planting Your Flag I used to have a very crude, kinda sexist name for this idea: "Be The Guy". This is because I noticed how many guys were doing this: The Points Guy is the Internet's pre-eminent authority on travel perks (It is now also a 9-figure business - pandemic aside) The RideShare Guy is who Wall Street called upon when Uber and Lyft IPO'ed Science communicators have definitely caught on to this. Neil deGrasse Tyson always introduces himself as your Personal Astrophysicist. But he's completely owned by Bill Nye - The Science Guy! If you skim over "the Guy" as a gender neutral shorthand, the actually important thing about having "a Guy" is that you look better just by "Knowing a Guy". Listen to Barney Stinson brag in How I Met Your Mother: You know how I got a guy for everything?... My suit guy, my shoe guy, my ticket guy, my club guy, and if I don't have a guy for something I have a Guy guy to get me a guy! This effect is real and it is extraordinarily powerful. Just by "having a guy" for something, you suddenly feel no desire to overlap with that person's domain. You can now focus on something else. And, to the extent you do that, you are now utterly dependent on "having a guy". You're also extremely invested in your "guy" being as successful and prominent as possible, so that you look better by association. It should strike you now that being someone's "guy" is very valuable, and that this also scales pretty much infinitely. You get there by planting a flag on your domain, and saying, this is what I do. People want expertise. People want to defer to authority. People don't actually need it all the time, they just want the option just in case. People love hoarding options. You can satiate that latent insecurity indefinitely. Most people also define "expertise" simply as "someone who has spent more time on a thing than I have" (The bar is depressingly low, to be honest. People should have higher standards, but they just don't. This is a systematic weakness you can - responsibly - exploit.) Picking A Domain You don't need to get too creative with this one. You want to connect yourself to something important: Maybe something people deal with daily but don't really think about too much (especially if they know they are leaving something on the table, like airline points - it is easy to make money from helping people unlock free money). Maybe something people only deal with once in a blue moon, but when they do it REALLY hurts (so you gain unfair expertise by specializing in having repeated exposure to rare events across multiple customers). There are a bunch of these, so to narrow down even more, look out for something you disproportionately love. Look for your own revealed preferences - search a topic in Slack or Twitter and see how often you talk about it. Look up your own YouTube watch history. An ideal domain for you is something that seems like work to others but you have fun digging into. With everything you love, there are things to hate. Find something within what you love, that you are ABSURDLY unsatisfied with. That love-hate tension can fuel you for years. For any important enough problem, there are plenty of experts. Do you feel like you haven't narrowed enough? Shrink your world. Be an internal expert at your company for your domain. This also helps you focus on things that bring value to a company, and therefore your career. It's also a very natural onramp to being an external expert when you leave. Claiming Your Domain Picking your domain is 90% of the journey. Most people don't even get that far. To really clean up, be prolific around that domain. Show up. To every conversation. I kind of joke about this as "High Availability for Humans". By showing up consistently, you become part of the consideration set. Humans don't have room for a very wide consideration set. It's usually 2. If we make lists and try really hard, we can get up to 10 (see: the Oscars). Think about the last time you purchased soap. You probably buy 1 of 2 brands of soap. But there are 100 on the shelves. They just weren't in your consideration set. So they never stood a shot. So your goal, as a brand, is to make it in. You do that by being Highly Available. By the way, we also have huge Availability Bias when it comes to recall. We conflate "first to your lips" with "being the best". We're also really good at backwards justifying what we just called the "best" by pulling up a bunch of bullet point reasons that have nothing to do with being "first to your lips". (Did I mention we like consistency?) It's your job to earn the right to be the best (and to define what that means), but also entirely within your control to be considered the best, which is what claiming your domain looks like. Give Up Freedom - For Now The flip side of planting your flag is you shouldn't plant it anywhere else. People like to see commitment. It implies, and usually does mean, that you have no choice but to be a domain expert. You signal commitment by giving up optionality. This is 100% OK - what you lose in degrees of freedom you gain 10x in marketing ability. The secret is - and don't tell anyone - that if you pick a Domain and it doesn't work out, you can still pivot if you need to. Nobody's going to hold it against you, as long as you don't pivot too often. If you really aspire towards more general prominence, you will find a much easier time of it if you first prove yourself in a single Domain. Blogging Blogging is usually mentioned up there in the "Marketing for Developers" space. I will always encourage you to blog - but don't fool yourself that pushing a new post every month alone will do anything for you by itself. There's just a lot of generic, scattershot advice about how you should blog more. These are usually people trying to sell you a course on blogging. (Except Steve Yegge!) The fact is Blogs gain extra power when they are focused on a Domain. CSS Tricks is a well known blog in the Frontend Dev space, and, as you might guess, for a long time it's domain was entirely CSS tricks. (It's expanded since then). Like everything else you follow, it's all about Signal vs Noise. Blogs let you get more juice out of that Domain Name you own, by constantly updating it with fresh content. You can also use it to feed that other most valuable online business asset: your email list! Overall, it is just a good general principle to own your own distribution. Twitter is a form of microblogging. It lets you export data easily and your content shows up on Google without an auth wall. All good things. But you're still subject to a feed. Definitely not a distribution you own - but it can be worth it to make the Faustian bargain of growing faster on a platform (like Twitter) first, then pivoting that to your Blog/Mailing list when you have some reach. Growing a Blog/Mailing list from zero with no other presence is hard. Marketing your Business Value vs Marketing your Coding Skills Business Value A large genre of "Marketing for Developers" advice basically reduces you to an abstract Business Black Box where your only role and value to the company is to Grow Revenue or Reduce Cost (or Die Trying?). I call this Marketing Your Business Value. This is, of course, technically correct: Technology is a means to an end, and ultimately your employer has to make ends meet and justify your salary. It is especially in your interest to help them justify as high a salary as possible. 10 Signs You’re Being True to Yourself

It’s painful and stressful to feel like you’re living a lie. Like you’re hiding how you really feel, saying what you think other people want to hear, and doing things you don’t actually want to do—just because you think you’re supposed to.
But sometimes we don’t recognize we’re doing this. We just know we feel off, or something feels wrong, and we’re not sure how to change it.
It makes sense that a lot of us struggle with being true to ourselves.
From when we’re young, we’re taught to be good, fall in line, and avoid making any waves—to lower our voices, do as we’re told, and quit our crying (or they’ll give us something to cry about).
And most of us don’t get the opportunity to foster or follow our curiosity. Instead, we learn all the same things as our peers, at the exact same time; and we live a life consumed by the mastery of these things, our bodies restless from long hours of seated study and our minds overwhelmed with memorized facts that leave very little room for free thinking.
To make things even worse, we learn to compare our accomplishments and progress—often, at things we don’t even really care about—to those of everyone around us. So we learn it’s more important to appear successful in relation to others than to feel excited or fulfilled within ourselves.
This was my experience both growing up and in my twenties. A people-pleaser who was always looking to prove that I mattered, I was like a chameleon, and I constantly felt paralyzed about which choices to make because all I knew was that they needed to be impressive.
I never knew what I really thought or felt because I was too busy suffocating my mind with fears and numbing my emotions to develop even a modicum of self-awareness.
This meant I had no idea what I needed. I only knew I didn’t feel seen or heard. I felt like no one really knew me. But how could they when I didn’t even know myself?
I know I’ve made a lot of progress with this over the years, and I have a mile-long list of unconventional choices to back that up, and a number of authentic, fulfilling relationships. But I’ve recently recognized some areas where I’ve shape-shifted in an attempt to please others, and in some cases, without even realizing it.
I don’t want to be the kind of person who panders to popular opinion or lets other people dictate my choices. I don’t want to waste even one minute trying to be good enough for others instead of doing what feels good to me.
I want to make my own rules, live on my own terms, and be bold, wild, and free.
This means peeling away the layers of fear and conditioning and being true to what I believe is right. But it’s hard to do this, because sometimes those layers are pretty heavy, or so transparent we don’t even realize they’re there.
With this in mind, I decided to create this reminder of what it looks and feels like to be true to myself so I can refer back to it if ever I think I’ve lost my way.

You know you’re being true to yourself if….
1. You’re honest with yourself about what you think, feel, want, and need.
You understand that you have to be honest with yourself before you can be honest with anyone else. This means you make space in your life to connect with yourself, perhaps through meditation, journaling, or time in nature.
This also means you face the harsh realities you may be tempted to avoid. You’re self-aware when faced with hard choices—like whether or not to leave a relationship that doesn’t feel right—so you can get to the root of your fear.
You might not always do this right away, or easily, but you’re willing to ask yourself the tough questions most of us spend our lives avoiding: Why am I doing this? What am I getting from this? And what would serve me better?
2. You freely share your thoughts and feelings.
Even if you’re afraid of judgment or tempted to lie just to keep the peace, you push yourself to speak up when you have something that needs to be said.
And you refuse to stuff your feelings down just to make other people feel comfortable. You’re willing to risk feeling vulnerable and embarrassed because you know that your feelings are valid, and that sharing them is the key to healing what’s hurting or fixing what isn’t working.
3. You honor your needs and say no to requests that conflict with them.
You know what you need to feel physically, mentally, and emotionally balanced, and you prioritize those things, even if this means saying no to other people.
Sure, you might sometimes make sacrifices, but you understand it’s not selfish to honor your needs and make them a priority.
You also know your needs don’t have to look like anyone else’s. It’s irrelevant to you if someone else can function on four hours of sleep, work around the clock, or pack their schedule with social engagements. You do what’s right for you and take care good care of yourself because you recognize you’re the only one who can
4. Some people like you, some people don’t, and you’re okay with that.
Though you may wish, at times, you could please everyone—because it feels a lot safer to receive validation than disapproval—you understand that being disliked by some is a natural byproduct of being genuine.
This doesn’t mean you justify being rude and disrespectful because hey, you’re just being yourself! It just means you know you’re not for everyone; you’d rather be disliked for who you are than liked for who you’re not; and you understand the only way to find “your tribe” is to weed out the ones who belong in someone else’s.
5. You surround yourself with people who respect and support you just as you are.
You understand that the people around you affect you, so you surround yourself with people who respect and support you, which motivates you to continue being true to yourself.
You may have people in your life who don’t do these things, but if you do, you understand their issues with you are just that—their issues. And you set boundaries with them so that they don’t get in your head and convince you there’s something wrong with you or your choices.
6. You focus more on your own values than what society deems acceptable.
You’ve read the script for a socially acceptable life—climb the corporate ladder, have a lavish wedding, buy a house, and make some babies—but you’ve seriously questioned whether this is right for you. Maybe it is, but if you go this route, it’s because this plan aligns with your own values, not because it’s what you’re supposed to do.
You know your values are your compass in life, and that they change over time. So you check in with yourself regularly to be sure you’re living a life that doesn’t just look good on paper but also feels good in your heart.
7. You listen to your intuition and trust that you know what’s best for yourself.
You not only do you hear the voice inside that says, “Nope, not right for you,” you trust it. Because you’ve spent a lot of time learning to distinguish between the voice of truth and fear, you recognize the difference between holding yourself back and waiting for what feels right.
You might not always make this distinction immediately, and you might sometimes be swayed by well-meaning people who want to protect you from the risks of thinking outside the box. But eventually, you tune out the noise and hone in on the only voice that truly knows what’s best for you.
8. You do what feels right for you, even if that means risking approval from the people around you.
Not only do you trust that you know what’s best for you, you do it. Even if it’s not a popular choice. Even if people question your judgment, vision, or sanity. You recognize that no one else is living your life, and no one else has to live with the consequences of your choices, so you make them for you and let the chips fall where they may when it comes to public perception.
This doesn’t necessarily mean you have everything you want in life. It just means you hear the beat of your own drum, even if it’s silent like a dog whistle to everyone else, and you march to it—maybe slowly or awkwardly, but with your freak flag raised high.
9. You allow yourself to change your mind if you recognize you made a choice that wasn’t right for you.
You may feel embarrassed to admit you’re changing directions, but you do it anyway because you’d rather risk being judged than accept a reality that just plain feels wrong for you.
Whether it’s a move that you realize you made for the wrong reasons, a job that isn’t what you expected, or a commitment you know you can’t honor in good conscience, you find the courage to say, “This isn’t right, so I’m going to make another change.”
10. You allow yourself to evolve and let go of what you’ve outgrown.
This is probably the hardest one of all because it’s not just about being true to yourself; it’s also about letting go. It’s about recognizing when something has run its course and being brave enough to end the chapter, even if you don’t know yet what’s coming next. Even if the void feels dark and scary.
But you, you recognize that the void can also feel light and thrilling. That empty space isn’t always a bad thing because it’s the breeding ground for new possibilities—for fulfillment, excitement, passion, and joy. And you’re more interested in seeing who else you can be and what else you can do than languishing forever in a comfortable life that now feels like someone else’s.
As with all things in life, we each exist on a spectrum. Every last one of us lives in the grey area, so odds are you do some of these things, some of the time, and probably never perfectly. And you may go through periods when you do few or none of these things, without even realizing you’ve slipped.
That’s how it’s been for me. I’ve gone through phases when I’ve felt completely in alignment and other times when I’ve gotten lost. I’ve had times when I’ve felt so overwhelmed by conflicting wants, needs, and beliefs—my own and other people’s—that I’ve shut down and lost touch with myself.
It happens to all of us. And that’s okay. The important thing is that we keep coming home to ourselves and we eventually ask ourselves the hard questions that decide the kind of lives we lead: What am I hiding? What am I lying about, and why? And what truth would set me free?

The Motivation of Genius, Part I

What drives us to excel? What motivates our thoughts and why does discovery move in certain directions, while not in others? How much of what we do is the result of what we think we decide, and how much is instinctual? Put in another context, how much of our behavior is hardwired and how much is the result of our personal learning software? These questions will be answered over the next few articles. By trying to answer them, we can gain insights about our lives, the world we live in, and our future as a species.
To begin, let’s look at certain behaviors in nature.
Locusts belong to the order Orthoptera (from the Greek ortho, straight and ptera, winglet). Grasshoppers, katydids, and crickets are part of this order. They have three main stages of development: egg, nymph, and adult. Female locusts drill holes in the ground and deposit ‘pods’ of eggs surrounded by a protective froth. As nymphs grow, they add segments. After each segment is made, the nymphs shed their skins eventually reaching their adult stage.1
Locusts are a species of short-horned grasshoppers.2 They exist in two different behavioral states: solitary and gregarious. When population densities are low, their color is brown or greenish. When densities increase beyond a critical threshold, crowding causes their hind legs to bump against each other and triggers the gregarious phase. Serotonin levels spike by a factor of three resulting in color changes (they turn black and yellow). Individuals undergo a 30% increase in brain size and release pheromones that cause the individuals to be more attracted to each other. Gregarious behavior is induced by visual, tactile, and olfactory cues. If an individual is removed from the swarm, he/she will revert to the solitary phase and lose the distinctive gregarious black and yellow markings.3
We know that our human ancestors experienced a similarly rapid increase in brain size over successive generations when our species was in its infancy. Whether cooperation in humans required similar changes in our brain structures, and why it happened are interesting questions. As with locusts, density factors may have played a part.
Density tipping points appear elsewhere in nature. Diseases require minimum host population sizes in order to exist. Should population size decrease sufficiently, a disease will no longer be able to sustain itself. In addition, host populations often develop immunities, reducing the number of potential hosts.4
Looking at population density levels, there appear to be two tipping points. One at the lower band and one at the upper band. The values that determine these tipping points and the behavioral changes that result are different population to population, due to many factors.

At very high densities, females shut down their reproductive systems and only reactivate them when densities have subsided and environmental conditions are better able to sustain the population. Group size, the interaction of individual elements, and the phenomena associated with them, are part of the study of complexity.
Complexity theory postulates the existence of emergent phenomena or behavior. Emergent behavior arises through the interaction of smaller or simpler parts that when combined, exhibit properties that the smaller parts do not.
An example is how oxygen and hydrogen can form water or hydrogen peroxide. Both are made from the same elements, but each compound has very different characteristics. Table salt is made of sodium, a metal, that is so reactive it must be stored in oil to prevent it coming in contact with water. Should it do so, it bursts into flame. Chlorine is a gas that is so corrosive it was banned after World War I as a weapon. The combination of the two is the inert compound, sodium chloride, that we use every day.
Emergent behavior has several characteristics. One of which is novelty: a new attribute that is unpredictable as an outcome given the elements that make it up. Many commercial products such as Nylon, Mylar, and other household products are the result of a great deal of experimentation to discover the emergent properties that we might find useful. Many were discovered by accidental combinations of elements and processes.6
Coherence is another characteristic of emergence. The emergent property maintains itself over a period of time. It exhibits a wholeness with its own characteristics.
Hurricanes and crystal formation have emergent properties. Temperature is also considered an emergent phenomenon, the result of collisions and oscillations of millions of molecules.
Emergence also exists in nature in the form of group behavior.
Swarming, flocking, and schooling, as well as crowd patterns in humans, such as traffic jams, are examples of emergence in biological systems.7
In the case of locusts, how do they learn to swarm?
We do know that conspicuous coloring, smell, and better vision allow the swarm to hold together. Other than as a means of survival, the need to form such a complex structure is not clear. It appears to be instinctual.
Instinct is a behavior exhibited by most living organisms that have to survive in changing environments. Organisms must learn to cope as individuals and as a species. Higher order animals require skill sets that are either hardwired or learned. Learning, too, is probably instinctual.
Instincts are another area that is not fully understood, although we know certain things about them.
An instinct acts as an inductive bias. It is also called a learning bias. It is the set of assumptions that the learner uses to judge whether an action is good or bad. A simple one for an infant might be to feel full. The infant might not know how that is done at the outset, but when it connects moving its mouth and swallowing with feeling full, it gets the idea. Inductive biases are an essential part of all learning processes.
To learn fast, a system must have more biases.
What does this mean?
Suppose we create an artificial intelligence system that contains billions of neural networks. We then hook it up to a supercomputer. In fact, we go all out and hook it up to three supercomputers working in parallel. Spending over a billion dollars on computation alone, we have potentially the most sophisticated AI system ever devised. We plug it in and press ENTER. What happens? Nothing.

We did not tell it to do anything. So we program it and tell it to learn. We hit the ENTER key again and wait. We wait and wait and wait. Still nothing. We examine our process and discover that we needed to give it a hint, a direction. We have to give it a bias. We are of two minds about this. We want it to learn everything but if we give it a bias, we immediately restrict what it will learn. It is a paradox. By saying what it is we want it to do, we automatically bias the computer. It no longer learns in a direction other than in the direction we decided.
For example, we have a robot. It just sits there so we tell it to move around and explore the maze it’s in. It moves. By moving, it no longer learns in the direction of being still. It has a bias. It moves and gets feedback as it crashes into walls. It never considered learning about colors or poetry. It couldn’t. It might be able to if we have it wirelessly connected to our billion-dollar machine, but we’d have to bias it to learn in that direction, and we didn’t. We gave it a hint to move instead.
This is the fundamental paradox of all learning. To begin, we have to set limits or boundaries.
Over time, a system can explore other areas, but learning is experiential, and no matter what we think about it, our initial jog in a specific direction is a bias that has been introduced. This is not necessarily a defect.
All babies, regardless of species, come with a large number of biases. If they didn’t, they couldn’t breathe, feed, move, or even sense what moving is. This we call instinct, and what hardwired-instincts do is extraordinary.
