Day 3 of @inukag-week 2023: Safe
Clutching at the red fabric and taking a big inhale, Kagome felt the tight tangle of anxiety come undone. She was fine now. Everything was going to be okay.
Inuyasha was here.
She didn’t know when it first began, because it happened so quickly and so naturally. She hadn’t thought about it the first time she jumped to the shelter of his arms—couldn’t remember when it became her instinct. Perhaps it began even on the first day they ever met.
When Kagome found herself in Sengoku that fateful day, lost beyond worlds, she’d run to Goshinboku to find her home, and there he’d been (her real home, though she’d never have guessed it back then). Sure enough, he saved her from the Mistress Centipede. Despite their rocky start, time and time again he’d prove his capabilities. Learning to depend on Inuyasha’s strength came fast by necessity. If she were in trouble, she believed that Inuyasha could and ultimately would deal with it—if only to ensure his Jewel Shard detector could fulfill her duties (at first).
Then they became friends, and she knew in her heart the way that he’d call for her, “Kagome!” had to mean he cared beyond her usefulness. Not because he had to save her, but because he wanted her to live.
She trusted him to defend her, to protect her, to find her—time and space and rules of the universe be damned.
She believed in Inuyasha. She put her whole heart into her faith in him.
And now, in her newest moment of terror, he was here.
“Kagome, would you quit being a baby already?” her husband admonished.
She was too horrified to be offended, and instead shouted, “No!” before smushing herself further into his arms. Okay, so maybe she was being melodramatic, but she couldn’t help it.
Inuyasha sighed over her antics. It was her weak spot after all.
Maggots. In their home.
Kagome hated bugs. She turned into such a sissy over them despite having faced far worse in her life.
With her body essentially glued onto him, Inuyasha warned, “I have to get closer to them to get rid of them, you know.”
She squealed, “No! Just use Tessaiga! You took out a wall in our house’s kitchen over a cockroach. Remember? I’m sorry I got mad before, just do the same thing now!”
He winced at the memory. It’d been years ago, but he still recalled the way she had screeched so loud that he had overreacted at the time. It’d been a lot of damage after all. He’d like to think he had a little more sense than he did back then.
“I’m not rebuilding our home because of some bugs.” Gross as the rotten heap of fruit was. The smell bothered him most, but even Inuyasha had to admit that the wriggling creatures were disturbing.
“Please, please, please just get rid of them,” she sobbed pathetically, this time burying her face into his chest and practically clawing up his torso to get off the ground. He doubted there were any near them, though she acted as if there was a huge infestation threatening to crawl up her legs any second.
Blowing his bangs up, Inuyasha relented to his wife and unsheathed his sword, which automatically transformed to its full size. Thankfully their home could accommodate it, but the contrast of the weapon compared to the compact pile of mush was comical.
Now, how to deal with this?
Not used to making such minuscule movements, Inuyasha did his best to scoop the mushy peaches onto the end of his sword. It wasn’t the worst idea. After all, he wasn’t keen on getting closer to the rancid smell. Unfortunately the resulting squelching sound made his wife let out a string of, “Ew, ew, ew!” before letting out a short scream.
His ear twitched. “You’re okay.”
She shook her head, gripping at him.
It didn’t seem like she was going to let go of him any time soon, and while he was used to carrying her around, the tight space and task made it cumbersome. But maybe he enjoyed, just a little, how close she was. He could do without her having a meltdown though.
“Okay, let’s go.” He held her to him with one arm, doing his best to navigate their way out the door along with the sword. Once out the door he carefully flung the offending pile of nastiness as far away as he could.
“Are they gone?” Kagome asked. She didn’t dare to pull away just yet.
He gave Tessaiga a good thwack to rid it of any remaining peach liquid. Then he sheathed it. “Most of ‘em. I’ll go back inside to take a look. You oughta get off me unless you wanna deal with them.”
A muffled sigh came from his chest. Kagome peeled herself off him sheepishly.
“Okay…” she replied as she stepped away.
“You wait out here.”
She nodded, and he disappeared behind the screen door only to emerge two minutes later. He chucked something once more as far away as possible, wiped his hands on his pants, and turned to her.
Kagome shoved herself back in his arms, this time hugging him with relief. “You got them all?”
“Uh-huh.”
“You checked near the sleeping mats?”
“Mhmm. You’re safe now.” His affirmations were tinged with affectionate mockery.
She didn’t care. “Thank you,” she mumbled as she clung to him. “You’re my hero.” Quickly (because they were outside) she kissed his lips to show her gratitude.
He stroked her back comfortingly. “Damn right.”

@inukag-week 2023 | May 29 | Prompt “Love Languages”
Summary: Inuyasha enjoys when someone takes care of him.
Read here or on Ao3
Tumblr media
Holding the cup of noodles in hand, Inuyasha sat at the kitchen table and waited semi-patiently for Kagome to arrive back home from school. It was a stupid thing to be excited about - especially considering this was far from the first time - but he knew - for an absolute fact - that Kagome had gotten this particular cup of noodles in this particular flavor for him.
Only for him.
It was sad how happy that made him. How happy all the little things Kagome did made him. She always made sure to bring his favorite things. She was considerate and paid attention to what he liked and what he didn’t. That one time she’d tried out a new shampoo that made him turn green, he noticed that she immediately stopped using it. He never said anything and she still noticed. She only used unscented things since then. Made sure food wasn’t spicy. And Kagome made sure he drank water and that he ate and brushed his hair. Cleaned up every injury no matter how minor.
She did all sorts of things and each little gesture had his heart doing to a flip flop. Kagome somehow made every day better.
And after a week like this, he definitely wanted Kagome to make everything better.
Chewing his bottom lip, he played with the plastic wrap a little and hummed.
“I’m home!” Kagome called out and with a happy little smile, Inuyasha immediately rushed over.
“Oh! You’re here. Were you-“ she abruptly trailed off when the noodle cup was aggressively thrust in her face. Irritation crept into her features.
“Let me guess. You don’t know how to make noodles despite being given step by step instructions?”
A blush bloomed across his nose but he wasn’t deterred. He really needed this. To the point where he was willing to use words.
“I can make the noodles but I like when you do it,” he explained with a dopey little smirk. The cup of noodles was wiggled a little in front of her unimpressed face.
“You are perfectly capable of making your own noodles Inuyasha,” Kagome sighed heavily as she turned around and began heading up to her room. She missed the way Inuyasha’s ears drooped and the way he slowly cradled the noodles against his chest. The surprise then the hurt that played out on his face. From her vantage point in the hallway, however, Mama noticed.
She moved into the kitchen.
“Oh, are you hungry sweetheart?. Let me do that for you,” she offered kindly as she moved to the stove and grabbed the kettle. Inuyasha hesitated for a moment before making his way over.
“No. No I’m not hungry,” he muttered as he placed the noodles on the counter, “Sorry. I didn’t -“
Mama turned around and leaned against the counter. The look she gave him was a little too knowing.
Panic.
“I was just trying to annoy her. I dunno,” Inuyasha lied quickly (poorly) as he shrugged and tried (failed) to project snarky attitude, “I didn’t think she’d be that pissed over it.”
Mama’s face softened and she pushed off to head towards the fridge.
“Well I need to make dinner anyway. Is there anything you‘d like?” she asked in a kind, encouraging tone, “I think I have some steak. Or fish.”
“Steak is the cow meat, right?” Inuyasha asked - his eyes were hopeful. Mama smiled and nodded.
“You liked it that one time, right? When I know you’re coming, I try to buy some. Just in case,” she continued in a warm tone - noting the way shocked awe flashed across his face quicker than he could hide the feeling behind attitude.
“I mean if you have it.”
Mama smiled and opened the fridge. Inuyasha’s eyes flicked to the pickled radishes with an unreadable expression but looked away before Kagome’s mother could notice him staring.
“Kagome cooks a lot, huh?” Inuyasha asked casually as he shadowed the woman back over to the counter. Setting down the various food items, Mama glanced at him. There was something strange in his gaze - understanding maybe? Guilt definitely.
“She used to but she hasn’t in a while,” she offered in a warm, unsuspecting tone as she moved about collecting the knives and cutting board, “I think the last time I saw her cook was when-“
“When she cooked for us,” Inuyasha finished numbly - the lost little look he’d had when Kagome turned him down back full force. His ears drooped and he sighed in a resigned fashion, “Did…did she ever say anything about that?”
Mama paused then slowly placed the cutting board down.
“I don’t understand the question.”
He didn’t seem capable of clarifying as he began breathing a little heavily and glanced towards the stairs.
“Inuyasha?”
Shaking himself, the boy turned back towards her and gave the matriarch a tight lipped smile.
“Just wondering if…if she mentioned doing it again. I liked it,” he offered - both a partial truth and also a complete lie. In terms of the picnic she’d made that day, he was not a fan of the egg dish itself -too salty although the rest of it was okay - but the fact that she’d very obviously cooked the entire meal with him in mind…
That part he very much liked. In fact, thinking about it even now made me very happy.
But she’d been upset. Angry almost. Hurt. In hindsight, nobody really complimented her hard work. Miroku even went so far as to say something to the tune of everyone forcing themselves to eat it. Then came his dumbass talking about pickled radishes being the only good thing and-
Inuyasha swallowed.
No wonder she didn’t want to cook his ramen. Thinking about it now, she hadn’t really helped with cooking since then. Usually Sango or Miroku prepared their food. Kagome brought ramen for him - yeah - and would boil water but that was about it.
He’d ruined something she enjoyed. Something she’d done which had made him very happy. He’d made her sad.
He should fix that. Tell her something nice so she kept doing nice things for him. He wasn’t sure he’d survive if that suddenly stopped. He was far too spoiled at this point.
Before he fully processed what in the seven hells he was doing with his life, he was standing outside her door.
Taking a shaky breath, he raised his hand to knock but the door swung open and a very grumpy Kagome was scowling up at him.
“I am not making your-“
“I like when you make me food."
Kagome's eye twitched.
"Inuyasha, I'm busy right now. I am not going to -"
More panic. Bubbling and churning until bile tickled his throat because she was going to stop doing things for him and he would not survive doing everything on his own. He couldn't go back to how things used to be. He just couldn't.
"How can you be so stupid?! Shit you do makes me happy idiot. You make me happy. Really, really happy. I can't-“
Inuyasha’s confession abruptly cut off and he went rigid.
Oh no. What had he done?
A heartbeat passed then he ran. Practically fell down the stairs. Like the coward he was, he made a stiff beeline for the well and went into hiding. Kinda. Does finding the highest branch in the Sacred Tree and pressing your body against the bark count?
Probably a good plan because shortly after he got situated, Kagome popped her head over the edge of the well and pushed herself up.
Inuyasha did not like being prey and he especially did not enjoy the predatory way Kagome stalked towards the tree.
She wouldn’t ‘sit’ him from this height, would she? She was a smart girl and clearly already knew where he was.
“Where is the ramen?” she ground out - her hand falling open like she expected the cup to fall from heaven, “Hand it over.”
Oh no. No no no no no…
Not the ramen. Anything but the ramen.
“It’s mine. You got it for me so you can’t take it,” Inuyasha hissed shakily although he made no move to say that to her face. He was very comfortable in his chosen branch and was honestly too mortified to come down. That and he’d left the ramen on the counter with Kagome’s mother. He couldn’t hand it over even if he wanted to.
Letting out a shaky breath, he covertly glanced down and noticed that her expression had gone from pissed to soft. And concerned like she’d put something together and whatever it was broke her heart.
“I am not going to steal the ramen Inuyasha. I want to make it for you. Taking care of you makes me happy,” she sighed wearily, “But would it kill you to say please and, you know, ask nicely? You just pushed it into my face. You didn’t ask.”
Still shaking, Inuyasha elected to remain quiet and silent.
He listened as she sighed heavily.
“Inuyasha, please don’t hide from me,” she murmured - her voice sounding a little pained, “Will you come down? I promise I’m not going to take away something that matters to you. This isn’t a trick.”
Inuyasha was confused by this statement and also terrified. Confused and terrified because his heart knew Kagome would never, ever, ever hurt him and yet his mind had panicked thinking - however briefly - she’d do just that. He expected the worst from her.
Dammit. This was only happening because he’d stupidly admitted he was weak and needed someone to take care of him. Well, needed was the wrong word. He wanted someone to take care of him. People doing things for him made him happy in a way other things simply didn’t.
And now she knew what made him happy. She had power over him. For some unfathomable reason, her knowing gave him the same feeling looking up at an enemy who’d pinned him down did. A spark of despair that he was about to lose everything. A realization that he never, ever had any control and all the effort he put into surviving had been pointless. A little voice whispering how useless he was and how he should’ve seen this coming.
He did this to himself. She’d stopped cooking because of him and his stupid mouth. She didn’t want to take care of him anymore. Didn’t matter that she was taking pity on him in this exact moment because if he let her, this would likely be the last time.
She was going to hurt him like he hurt her. It was only fair.
“Look, I am going to go back now,” Kagome called out in a heartbreakingly gentle tone, “I am going to make some ramen. If you want it, I’ll leave it in the kitchen, okay? I’ll even put a little name tag so no one else will eat it.”
Inuyasha closed his eyes and fought against the impulse to simply go with her now. This could only end badly.
“And I know…” she let out a controlled breath which shook, “I know I got mad but I hope you know that I love you too.”
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
Wait, what was that now?
“All I ask is that next time you ask nicely and maybe say please. Thank you would be nice too.”
No, no hold on. Back up because he must’ve missed something. Don’t get him wrong, Kagome loving him back was the best thing ever but when exactly did he say ‘I love you’? He didn’t remember that. Sure it was true but…but…
Swallowing thickly, Inuyasha hesitantly looked down and, to his horror, Kagome was staring right back. She smiled. His eyes widened. A soft disbelieving laugh bubbled over his lips.
Holy shit.
“Hi,” she hummed affectionately - something new, confident and warm swirling in her eyes, “Inuyasha, would you like if I made you some ramen?”
After far too long a pause, he nodded and began stiffly climbing down.
Oh, right.
“Please,” he breathed anxiously once his feet lightly landed on the grass. Kagome smiled that beautiful little smile of hers. Her hand reached out and intertwined their fingers. Her thumb rubbed soft circles against his skin.
“Okay then. Let’s go make you some ramen.”
And that’s exactly what they did.

She lives! A teeny offering for InuKag week, for both the Safe and Modern prompts – a little something something from my First Impressins AU
Safe
"Hey, quit squirming around back there like a fuckin’ spider monkey Kagome! Don’t make me regret getting outta my nice warm bed to come pick you up, or I’ll drop your tiny ass on the pavement!"
Kagome giggled loudly in his ear and Inuyasha turned his head aside to avoid the intense scent of spirits that wafted from her mouth.
"Holy shit, you smell like a distillery - did you and Sango drink the entire bar dry? You're a fuckin' mess Kittycat."
"I know you are, but wha' am I", sang Kagome, then giggled again, giving herself the hiccups in the process. She leaned in closer, her voice a heavy whisper directly into his ear. "You're cute when you're grumpy Inu."
He twitched his ear away from her mouth, his cheeks heating a little at her comment.
"Not half as grumpy as you're gonna be with the king sized hangover you'll be waking up with, dumbass", he muttered.
"Hey! My ass isn't dumb! It got me a promotion an' Sango helped me celebrate! With tequila! An I woulda stayed, but Sango called Miroku, and they were talking and sucking face and there was this guy who wanted me to do more shots with him and he even said he'd buy them, but I said no because he kept tryin' to put his hands on my butt. I told him if he did it again I'd kick him in the nuts and I missed you so I called you and... Hey! Should we go back and find that guy and we can both kick him in the nuts? Hey Inu lets go back and I'll buy you tequila. TEQUILA!"
She screamed the last word at the top of her lungs, setting off a few random neighborhood dogs to barking, then put both arms straight up in the air, giggling madly.
"For fucks sake, just stay still, would ya, or I really will drop you," grunted Inuyasha, flattening his ears against the torrent of words and noise, tightening his grip on Kagome's swinging legs. "Just a few more blocks and you'll be home safe where you can't get yourself into any more trouble!"
"Inu, I don't feel s-"
Inuyasha thanked the heavens above for his youkai reflexes. He managed to get Kagome off his back and her head over the gutter just before the waterfall of vomit appeared. He even managed to catch the ends of her hair out of the way, most of it protected by the oversized red beanie he'd given her the day they first met. She still insisted on wearing it whenever the weather was even slightly chilly.
"Is that all of it?" he asked quietly, rubbing Kagome's back gently. She shook her head, her entire body shaking with the force of the next wave.
"I'm dying", she finally whimpered, spitting out the last mouthful with a grimace, her face sweaty and very pale.
"You're not dying", he chuckled, smoothing her hair back.
"I'm dying and you're laughing at me! I bet you won't even come to my funeral", she coughed. "I'm just gonna lay down here and finish dying. Wake me up tomorrow." She wiped her mouth on her sleeve, and then looked up at him with tearful eyes. "Inuyasha, I think maybe that last drink was a baaad idea."
Inuyasha rolled his eyes, and picked her up again.
"Come on party girl, lets get you home safe."
"Will you stay and look after me?" she asked, resting her head on his shoulder with a heavy sigh.
"You betcha", he grinned, walking carefully so he didn't jostle her stomach - he didn't want to tempt fate until they were closer to indoor plumbing. "Cos then I get to laugh at your sorry ass tomorrow morning."
"I hate you", she whispered, hiding her face in his neck, ignoring his deep chuckle.

Inukag week, Day 1: Love Languages
((So glad I managed to squeeze this off before midnight!))
@inukag-week
~~~~~~
In My Arms
Kagome's return to the medieval period, being as long-awaited as it was, did not pass without fanfare. The village had welcomed her back with open arms, and held a small festival to celebrate - nothing too extravagant, it was still planting season after all, but it was amazing to know just how many people had missed her, beyond her core group of feudal friends.
By the time the first month passed, things had mostly settled into a routine that Kagome was only too happy to fall into. The familiarity had kicked in, even as she adjusted to the vast changes that had been made in her absence.
Shippo had hit an early growth spurt and almost came up to her hip now. He was still quite short for his age, but she didn't expect that he would get very tall. Sango and Miroku had babies, two beautiful little girls and the most adorable baby boy Kagome had seen since Sota was born. Fatherhood had relaxed Miroku, if only by a little, and Sango was the most fiercely protective mama bear, exactly as Kagome had expected her to be.
But the largest change, of course, was with Inuyasha. Kagome knew in her heart how they felt about each other, but they hadn't actually said it yet. A thin layer of the normalcy she remembered was still there - it was only a matter of a few days following her return that the two of them were bickering like no time had passed at all.
But no matter the argument or insult thrown, every barb was dulled by the fact that Inuyasha had barely stopped touching her since she returned.
Any time they sat down for a meal or conversation, he was tucked up against her side, assuming he hadn't sat first and pulled her right down into his lap. Walking through the village or woods? It was only a matter of time before his hand found her back or his fingers tangled with hers. He'd been favoring holding her hand more lately, but she supposed it was at least partially because she had made a habit of lifting their joined hands to kiss his knuckles. She'd noticed the way his expression softened when she did it, and if he'd had a tail - as she often wished he did, when they first met and she had struggled to read him - she was certain it would be wagging.
She had almost asked about it, the first time she found him leaning on her during dinner the night she returned, but the way his ears drooped when she said his name stopped her in her tracks before she could say a word more. And hey, it wasn't as if she was complaining, right? Why would she? So she'd asked if he had enough rice and smiled at how he relaxed even further into her as the meal progressed.
That evening, when he had sat up against the wall of Kaede's hut, putting himself between her and the door the way he always did, she had stayed in place for only a minute or two before crawling closer and resting her head in his lap.
From there, everything had just… fallen into place.
Now, a month into her new life, she knew she couldn't be happier with her decision. She'd taken up priestess training with Kaede again, and was always ready to help Sango with the kids. And Inuyasha was always nearby. He'd been more than a bit antsy as the weeks wore on, and Kagome found herself the tiniest bit relieved when Miroku came around to let Inuyasha know they'd been hired for an exorcism to the north, maybe two days walk from the village. She thought it would be a good opportunity for Inuyasha to let off some steam - he'd been in the village with her for a month now, and she knew too well how anxious that could make him.
"Nah. I'm not feelin' it this time around. You and Shippo can handle it, right?"
Sango and Kagome looked up from where Hisui was laying, Sango arching a brow at him while Kagome's furrowed in confused concern.
"Are you sure, Inuyasha? Everything's been so peaceful lately, it might be a while before we get another job."
"Yeah, I'm good. Hey! Maybe Sango can go and Kagome and I can handle the brats!"
The way Sango picked up the baby and held him to her while glaring daggers at Inuyasha said that they would not be allowed to "handle the brats" without her just yet. Kagome stood from her spot on the grass, picking up a nearby bucket.
"I'm… gonna go get more water for the kettle," she hummed, only getting a few paces away before she heard footsteps start up behind her.
She led Inuyasha a little ways away from the rest of the group, waiting until he reached out to tangle his fingers with her free hand to speak.
"I think you should go with Miroku."
"He'll be fine on his own. We haven't run into anything too powerful in over a year."
"That's not what I mean, and I think you know it," she hummed, pulling him closer and releasing his hand so she could wrap her arm around his middle. No escaping this conversation. She saw his ears lower, but his arm automatically mirrored hers. "Don't get me wrong; I love having you close at hand every minute of every day. I love holding hands and cuddling at night. But we need to be able to go off and do our own thing for a while. It's been a month since I got back, and you're already going stir-crazy."
"I'm fine, it's not a big deal," he but back, sounding more than a little grumpy.
"Oh, please. I know you well enough to know when you're itching for a fight. Really, Inuyasha, you can leave the village for a couple of days! Sango and I can look after the kids and hold down the fort until you get back."
"It's not that simple. What if-"
"If anything happens here, Sango and I can handle it. Shippo and Kilala will take the kids somewhere safe while we deal with whatever demon decides that attacking us is worth dying for."
"Kagome-"
"And again, zero complaints about the cuddling, but you really don't need to babysit me! I'll be right where you left me when you come back-"
"You disappeared in front of my eyes! If you're going to get taken away from me again, I at least want to be here to say goodbye!"
Kagome felt her eyes go wide, and Inuyasha winced a little at his own outburst. A brief, tense silence fell between them before Kagome's expression went soft, and she reached out, placing her hands gently on the sides of his face.
"It's happened before." Inuyasha tersely reminded her, eyes cast downward. "The jewel's come back before, it could happen again, and I don't- I can't lose you again. But if something is gonna take you away, I want to at least hold you until you go."
She took a deep breath, an apologetic look crossing her face. Inuyasha had gradually become more physically affectionate over their time together, so while she'd expected a little separation anxiety, she had thought the new closeness was just the natural expression of their relationship. She wished she had noticed his concern sooner, if only so that she could have assuaged his fears.
"Inuyasha," Kagome murmured, waiting until his amber eyes met hers. "I'm not going anywhere. Not anymore. I couldn't say why, but I'm as certain as I can be, I'm here to stay. I know it's scary. Being back here with you all has felt like a dream, and sometimes I worry I'm going to wake up."
She pulled his face down so she could press her forehead to his. Her hands moved down his chest and wrapped around his middle, giving him a warm smile.
"But I'm here. You're not getting rid of me that easily again. And if a human, a demon, or fate itself tries to take me away again, you know I'll fight tooth and nail to get back to you."
She felt his arms close around her, and he leaned a little more heavily into her, eyes falling shut. In a voice smaller than any she'd ever heard from him before, he asked, "Promise?"
"I promise," she murmured back, squeezing him tight against her. "So here's what's going to happen: You're going to go with Miroku. You're gonna exorcize whatever Demon you've been hired to handle. And in a few days time, you'll be back in my arms. Just like you are now. Okay?"
Inuyasha sighed, but after a moment, offered a small smile, pulling away enough to meet her eyes again.
"Okay," he finally allowed, reaching up to brush her bangs out of her eyes.
"Good. Now hurry on - the sooner you get going, the sooner you'll be back."
Inukag Week 2023: Day 2: Possession
@inukag-week
Day 1  Day 2  Day 3  Day 4  Day 5  Day 6  Day 7
AO3
Fanfiction
It wasn’t until Kagome had met and spent a lot of time with Inuyasha that she realized how lucky she was growing up. Sure, she had known she had a good homelife, a loving family, and a future to look forward to.
Inuyasha had nothing but the clothes on his back and the chips on his shoulder.
The first time Inuyasha curled up and fell asleep on her bed, Kagome wanted to let him stay there forever. He seemed to just melt into the soft comforter, his face relaxing off the harshness that normally sat there. He seemed to just be a normal teenage boy in that moment, rather than the harsh and difficult half-demon he was when he was awake.
If Kagome could have given him that peace for the rest of his life, she would have in a heartbeat.
But as with everything, it came to an end that he was sleeping peacefully and quietly on that bed and the real world came knocking and demanded they return to the quest that engulfed their every moment.
The desire to give him everything didn’t disappear with the morning sun, however.
At some point, Inuyasha had become very comfortable with seizing anything and everything of hers and using to his own means. Sleeping bag? Now his for sitting on when camping outside until she made him get off for her to sleep. Books? A source of entertainment (sometimes kindling) for when he wanted to annoy her. Clothes? Those worked great for drying off or wiping sweat off his face, even if they were still on her body and he was just flat out rubbing his forehead on her. Shoes? Ah, perfect for throwing at the crows that gathered on Kaede’s roof. Fifty-fifty if he got them down without her having to ask him.
Kagome found herself specifically looking for things they could share. He had a favorite pair of chopsticks that once were hers, so she got another set. His long hair required softer elastic band on hair ties, so she got scrunchies and clips for them to use when bathing. He preferred open-mouth water bottles to straws, so she got rid of her original one to get a big one they could share.
There was a time when she would have been mortified at the thought of sharing every single thing in her life, but just like how Inuyasha had melded into her bed that night, they blended together.
What was hers was his, and vice versa.
It was so natural after a while, that not even having it pointed out to them would cause them to blush or deny it.
“Less to carry if we share more.” Kagome had said once to Kaede as Inuyasha chugged the entirety of the very large water jug. “It just makes sense.”
Shippo had all of his own things, so it perhaps didn’t actually make sense. She carried a special water bottle, utensils, pillow, soap, crayons, and just about anything else for the little boy. It was the same for Miroku and Sango, who each had their own designated items in her pack.
It was just Inuyasha that she shared everything with.
Soon physical possessions weren’t just the only thing the two teens shared. Inuyasha started to share her successes at school and joined in on studying with her, despite not finding much use for it. It helped her a lot to have another person to talk to, even if it was just grunting red clad boy who knew nothing about theoretical math.
Miroku had tried to help her study, and he was great for history and religious topics, however laying on her stomach next to a lounging half-demon seemed to be the best way for her to work through math equations.
Tapping his shoulder, Kagome commanded his attention to her homework. “Is that a three or eight?” The dim lighting from the fire prevented her from being able to fully make it out. She could if she scooted closer, but it was more convenient to take advantage of Inuyasha’s better eyesight. He drew an eight in the air with his finger.
“To the power of eight?!” Kagome collapsed onto her arm in exasperation. “How am I supposed to figure that out?”
“Write it out.” Inuyasha had no idea what a power of eight was, but he knew what he was supposed to say when the numbers came out. Mama Higurashi had taught him.
Sighing loudly, Kagome rearranged herself onto her elbows and started writing out the equation. Inuyasha felt a surge of pride at being helpful to her, even if he had no idea how it all worked. He didn’t quite get why she was so certain she needed school, but if it was important to her, it was important to him to.
After all, they shared everything.
Including hopes and dreams, he realized one day when in a heated spat with Miroku over Kagome. He had pressed about their future together, insinuating that they should just hurry up and get married. He and Sango had to wait after all, until the curse was lifted, but no such restrictions were on Kagome and Inuyasha.
Inuyasha had huffed and snarled out, “She wants to go to high school. It’s important to her to graduate.”
Miroku had a blank look cross his face. “What does that mean, exactly?” the monk asked.
Inuyasha felt a sense of embarrassment overcome him. He didn’t know exactly what it meant to graduate. “It means…” he scrambled for words. “…she’s finished her school.”
“What’s next for her?”
Inuyasha wanted to strangle the man walking alongside him to fetch water for Kaede. “She wants to finish school and…” his jaw worked hard as he processed if he wanted to tell Miroku what he knew or what. For some reason, the thought that it might deter further questions. “Have a career and raise dogs. Maybe get married but that’s not important to her.”
Miroku nodded as if he understood. Clearly, he did not. “What is a career?”
“Something you do until you’re old.” Souta’s basic explanation was all he knew of the topic.
“Like being a priestess?” Miroku’s eyes wandered over to look at Inuyasha’s profile. It was bright red.
Inuyasha huffed loudly. Miroku took that as a yes, so he continued to prod. “What’s this about dogs?”
“Dogs are her favorite animal and she wants to have a bunch when she’s older.” Inuyasha answered without thinking. “It’s not common to have a lot of dogs, but with the shrine grounds, she can, so she wants to rescue them from living on the street or bad homes.”
Miroku paused for a moment, calculating his next question. “Like how she rescued you?”
Inuyasha stopped walking suddenly, causing the monk to get just a few paces ahead. Miroku tried to gauge if he had gone a step too far. Inuyasha seemed frozen eyes straight ahead for what felt like forever, and Miroku was just about to tell Inuyasha to forget his comment and change topics when Inuyasha spoke.
“Yeah.”
Miroku finally turned his body to look at his friend and see a softness cross his features. He started walking again forward, quietly whispering, “Except this time, we’re going to do the rescuing together.”
Because, after all, they shared far more than just possessions.
