Let's talk about... Mhok's Fart Proudly t-shirt
Let's be honest here, this IS a ridiculous shirt. But it is just so Director Aof to put one of his characters in such a ridiculous shirt during a poignant scene.
This is Baseball Mom 2.0
And I say that not only because it's ridiculous but because, just like Baseball Mom, it also has a deeper meaning connected to the narrative - as is Aof's style - and it's what I adore about his work, that he puts so much attention to detail into the characters' wardrobe.
But on to the shirt.
Tumblr media
If we can get past the loudness of the "FART PROUDLY" we can see the rest of the text reads approximately as thus:
I believe a fart is a healthy, natural thing - and is nothing to be embarrassed about. I have pledged myself to changing society's attitude towards farts by showing that I am not afraid to release my farts freely - wherever, whenever - and without shame.
And yes, it's about farts BUT the underlying messages here are the parts I have highlighted.
Throughout ep 2, Mhok tries to encourage Day to get out of his room, to "open his eyes" to things, to remind him the rest of his body still 'works' ("Your hands are available" / "You can still hear"), to try things before dismissing them. He learns that Day is scared of how he is perceived by others and tells Aon there's nothing to be embarrassed about. He asks Day why he cares what people think...all the while knowing to some capacity what it's like to to be judged on face-value. And Mhok is able to let that judgement roll off him, it seems he's able to meet his challenges without shame.
After Mhok gets fired, he uses this confidence to spend time in the market blindfolded. He's not afraid to feel uncomfortable and vulnerable in order to understand Day and what he's experiencing. He proudly endeavours to navigate through the space and to eat without his sight regardless of what others may think of him. He feels the fear, but does it anyway. He has no qualms about doing more than necessary - after all he could have just walked away and not thought about Day again. But, as the wardrobe choices tell us as well, the best never rest. And Mhok is one of the best.
Tumblr media
Day used to be "a guy with confidence", and Mhok is trying to give that back to him. The t-shirt also asks "Can I count on you, now, to stand behind me?" which, in the context of the farting, could be 'are you willing to endure my farts?' or 'will you join me in farting freely', but with Mhok and Day it's 'are you with me? Can you be brave enough to not be embarrassed? To say fuck it and live your life regardless of others?' and/or 'will you let me help and protect you?'.
Mhok cares a lot. Not about what others think of him - he had no hesitation to get naked and let people watch when Day asked ('do this and I'll forgive you' -> 'how brave are you? how brave can you be for me?') - but about Day and the other people in his life. And Day is also starting to care - he not only left his house to see Mhok but agreed to let a relative stranger take him to a very crowded and, having been shut in his room for a year, what must have been a very scary place. Which makes Day's t-shit in this scene equally fitting. "Capacity Intensive Care".
Tumblr media
It may be small now - their care and affection for each other - but it will soon grow, even if they don't see it yet. But they'll both be getting "more care, more often, right where [they] live".

More Sherliam thoughts/headcanons:
I present to you;
Sherlock Holmes who is averse to physical displays of affection/ fondness, who has spent his life avoiding the typical family hugs, elbow and back touches, shoulder bumps, even the playful shoving and back and forth of teenage boys. It gets on his nerves.
Then along comes Liam, and Sherlock is suddenly gripped with this need to touch, in any way shape or form — the urge to tease and shove and poke and throw an arm around shoulders or guide by the elbow or steady at the small of the back or shoulder barge playfully or grab a hand or or or —
And it’s so new and terrifying and exhilarating all at once and he cannot control the way it all spills over when they’re together in New York and he fucking knows Billy is watching him and smirking but bugger it.
Is this what normal people do? Is this the result of pointless but typical human urges?
Liam doesn’t seem to mind. Does he? Or does he? He’d push back if he did, wouldn’t he?
How the hell is Sherlock meant to know how all this works when he’s never given a rat’s ass about any of it before??
UGH.
And then, Liam:
The boy who was the rock from such a young age, who never received gestures of physical affection, only gave them when needed to his baby brother, but never asked or expected anything for himself, even at the nice orphanages, even from the kindest sisters.
Who avoided typical rough-housing child’s play because he had bigger things to worry about and plans to see through their end and adults to impress with his mind so that he could provide for Louis.
The touch starved man who now, suddenly, finds himself on the receiving end of frequent, fleeting body contact from his newfound friend and intellectual soul mate; who is absolutely acutely aware of each and every brush of an arm or tug on a sleeve or elbow to the ribs or arm around a back or forehead against a shoulder or toe to a shin beneath the kitchen table or or or —
And it’s so new and terrifying and exhilarating all at once and he cannot control the way he aches for every touch to come more frequently; for the contact to last longer; for the gesture to become more.
But he’s taught himself not to want and not to ask and not to be any trouble to anyone, because that’s how you get by in life and make acquaintances who feel like they need you, so he doesn’t voice any of this aloud. He just grins softly and accepts the gestures gracefully and contains the spontaneous combustion he feels inwardly, in case it might burn Sherlock or put him off continuing to be so physically present with him.
Billy, however, is neither touch-repellent nor touch-starved and can see through the both of them and if they don’t snap the goddamn tension soon he’s gonna snap it for them.

I've seen a few posts criticizing people for not liking Hawk and claiming that people aren't trying to sympathize with him or understand him and his situation.
Here's the thing, though - you can understand a character's motivations and feel sympathy for their circumstances while also not particularly liking them. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.
Hawk is a complex character living with a hell of a lot of fear, and I can appreciate that fact while also thinking he's a bit (or even a lot) of a dick.
He causes so much pain to everyone around him, he throws friends and strangers under the bus to protect himself, he's selfish a lot of the time, and he clearly neglects his family even though he chose them over his own happiness... He's not exactly a likable guy.
Sure, Tim isn't perfect, but the only person who seems to suffer directly from his actions is himself, except for when he is coerced into doing something shitty by Hawk. The only other person he really hurts is Hawk, and only by not being strong enough to refuse temptation and properly move on with his life.
Tim's greatest flaw is his inability to say no to Hawk or to resist temptation. Hawk's greatest flaw is... well there are too many to count really.
Viewers are allowed to have preferences regarding characters, and there are also more reasons to enjoy watching a show beyond a single relationship. "Why do you even watch FT if you don't like one of the main characters?" - I don't know - maybe because I enjoy the other characters, or the history, or the romance (even if it does include a character I don't like), or the performances, or I want to see how things turn out now that I'm invested...there is no shortage of reasons to enjoy this show, I promise you - it is bloody incredible after all.
So please, quit it with the holier-than-thou attitude of "you only dislike Hawk because you don't understand him". I'd bet most people who don't like him are smart enough to at least somewhat comprehend the reality of those time periods, sympathize with these characters, and understand why people behaved the way they did.

kinda want izzy to absolutely decimate stede at chess and I can't explain why
#ofmd#stizzy#izzy hands#stede bonnet#like... maybe stede is teaching ed because he wants to have someone to play against and ed is trying his best to learn#and brilliant tactician that he is ed of course can understand the game and the rules very well that's not even remotely the issue#it's just that... well the game is about strategy and planning and anticipating your opponent's moves and ultimately overpowering them#and that's quite like pirating now isn't it except these are tiny wooden pieces on the board and ed is just used to this kind of strategic#planning on a much larger and livelier level with higher stakes and with the added element of human unpredictability and never quite#knowing what rules someone else is playing by. so he does learn and he plays okay but tends to lose focus somewhere in the first ten turns#so one day they're trying to get through a full game and izzy is sitting off to the side watching them play and ed is kind of trying but his#mind is already wandering elsewhere and he makes frankly ridiculously bad move and izzy is just like 'wait' then sighs walks over to them#and puts the piece back and makes a different move instead saying 'do this instead' and ed's face is just like ??? confused betrayal because#why and how did he not know izzy could play chess?? and stede's eyes of course fill with excitement at the thrill of a new opponent and also#because he's been taking it easy on ed while he gets the hang of the game but is actually rather skilled at chess and would love to impress#with his skills even if the only person who would truly get the brilliance is izzy (and stede admits to himself that izzy does know what#he's doing given that the move he corrected for ed is exactly what he would have done)#so anyway stede does his whole big eyes hopeful voice *vague gestures* thing and is like 'oh you play? care for a game?' and izzy stares#him down for what feels like forever but is actually about 8 seconds before saying 'one. one game' so they reset the board and it's only#fair for stede to let izzy go first but for izzy's first turn instead of moving a piece he rotates the whole board so the white pieces are#in front of stede and says 'i don't think so. not letting you have the excuse to say i only won because i went first' and stede#is a little taken aback but you know what? challenge accepted. game on#it's about twenty turns in when stede starts getting nervous that izzy does in fact know his shit and another ten turns later when he#realizes he may be in over his head#and while it isn't a carelessly simple defeat izzy does end up beating stede#and isn't there just something so satisfying about being the cause of stede making the displeased but invigorated expression he's wearing#(do i have any clue how izzy became a chess genius? no but we can speculate. maybe he played regularly with someone on a ship growing up bc#it was a good way to pass the downtime in an entertaining way without having to talk much at all. or maybe he learned as a child and was#required to keep strict hours of practice so because really good but kind of resented it so maybe this is the most he's ever enjoyed playing#or maybe he was watching as stede taught ed to play and just picked up on some of stede's strategies and/or snuck one of his chess books out

I like how in It Takes You Away, the doctor initially offers herself to the solitract, compares herself to the dad and talks about how he has to go because he has a daughter that needs him and stuff, while also mentioning how much she has lost, it's very similar to things the doctor has done in the past, the sort of "take me, bc I have nothing to lose" stuff, but then she turns it around, and starts gently reasoning with the solitract to let her go anyway
I know in the surface its because the solitract's plane was destablising, but I think its a really nice show of growth
