It's way past my bedtime ans my cat is sleeping-purring next to me but I thought I'd post the process of the @ailani-reillata Ailaniversary art I made today just to talk a bit more about it

Disclaimer: doing traditional art is cool until you need to scan it or post a picture of it 😂 also kinda long post below so ofc no obligation at all to read it!

Phase one: Sketching the Idea

My inspiration for the posture was a Yara Flor comic strip I found on Pinterest. Yara looks over her shoulder and her hair falls on the side of her face, and I loved the way it framed her face and thought it would look great with Ailani's hair.

I drew a little doodle on the page to help me visualize how the hair would be divided, and focused on 3 main parts (the lines, the bubbles, the empty space) which would - supposedly- help me during the lineart stage. Below are images of the final sketch.

I was hesitant on adding details to her arms, such as the folds of a dress, but I was so anxious about ruining the drawing I abandonzd that idea. I was considering adding her tattoos and was still not decided at this stage of the drawing.

Phase 2: Line-ing the Art

Is that even a real word? Idk, I'm too tired to English properly so we will say it is. Following the sketching phase was naturalle the lineart phase, which is one of my favorite stage when drawing. I bought new inking pens too so I was able to test them out, and it went quite well!

As you can see, the ribbons, outline of the skin and facial features have been done with my new pens, and i was quite happy with the result! It gives a more natural look to the whole drawing in my opinion.

At this stage I decided not to add her arm tattoos and consider this version of Ailani as the one you would find in the early chapters of Begged and Borrowed Time, so before she would get her tattoos.

Phase 2.5: Line-ing the Hair

This stage has it's own part because it was really fun to do! The inspiration for the way I draw hair comes from @/ssavaart (aka Scott Christian Sava on Youtube). I've been following him for a while now and I'm trying to push my art beyond my comfort zone and try new stuff thanks to him, and having fun with drawing hair is one of these things!

Look how beautiful these curls are. I'm not trying to toot my own horn or anything, but I'm really proud of the drawing at this stage 😂 it's the perfect moment where the inking went well and I have not yet ridked myself with the watercolours - so I always take a long sight (and tons of pictures) to celebrate reaching this stage without incidents.

Phase 3: Watercolours

Here comes the difficult part. It always makes me nervous because I always fear ruining my drawing and all the efforts I put into it by doing the watercolours. But I love the medium too much and if I want to get better I need to practice. So, testing the waters, I finally dive head first into this crucial stage.

The watercolouring goes well, I'm overall satisfied enough to take some pictures and even try to scan it, with the hope that the scanned rendering will be better than the usual "photographing and editing" I do with my phone.

Spoiler alert: the scan was NOT better than the pictures, and no amount of editing could change that. (Or maybe I am just very bad at editing.) So, back to my "photographing and editing" habits, I somehow managed to get a good enough result:

I still feel unsatisfied as I find these digital versions do not properly render the visuals I have on paper, IRL. With the digital versionsw the hair is either so dark we don't see the details, or too bright, the colours are too warm and light... And while Ailani looks light-skinned, the paper version has these visible brown tones that I struggled to find on the digital version, even when editing the pictures. The closest I got is the tone you see on the first picture, but the image is not lighted enough so the overall quality of the picture is a bit lessened by that.

Still, I won't complain too much, because overall it was a very fun drawing to do, I enjoyed every stage of it and I would love to do another piece like this! But for now I will go to sleep because it is Way Past My Bedtime 😂

I think I mentioned that I was looking into getting a better sewing machine? well, it arrived today 🙈 that happened much faster than planned. I found the model I was looking at at a (relatively) local sewing machine store, for 30% off because it had been in the shop window, so the plastic has yellowed.

I wasn't sure how I felt about that (the website only said it was a floor model or something similar, then someone from the store called and told me the specifics and asked if that was still okay), but honestly? I never ever would have paid the full price, it was just too much, I couldn't justify that. but this reduced price was only a little more than the ones I had been looking at before (that were not great quality and probably wouldn't last very long).

I am very particular about things like this but I'm trying to make myself accept that it really is not that bad. it actually looks kinda cool. I just have to get my brain to accept that it's not a flaw, it's just a completely superficial and insignificant thing that doesn't affect its function at all. it's good that this machine that works perfectly won't end up in a landfill just because it doesn't look brand new.

I only got to try it a little bit today because I wasn't feeling well but damn, the difference to my old machine is huge!! it's so much more fun and easy to use - I love having the needle threader and that it can automatically cut the yarn when you're done. and with the start/stop button it's actually really fun to wind bobbins!! I always hated that on my old machine.

I skimmed through the manual earlier (and put page markers in it so that I can easily find anything later) - it did seem somewhat overwhelming at first. I've never used or even seen (irl) a computerised sewing machine, so of course it did! but it already felt much more familiar after just using it a little bit today. I love it 🥰

(also, I think the fact that it doesn't look perfect and brand new actually helps - I'm not afraid to use it in case I 'ruin' it!)

I do it all day every day until it stops being the #most interesting thing on earth. and then I pick it up again like once a year but always feel guilty for not doing it enough #annnnyway #I'm very excited about all of it right now #I'm hoping it'll last a while #I mean. I've been interested in sewing for over a decade. I just never had enough money to really get into it the way I'd like #so. I know I haven't dropped in for a couple of days but I saw your post about what you've had to deal with recently and I just wanted to send you my love and support. That sounds like a really scary and uncomfortable situation to go through but I hope you know that there is also so much kindness and love in the world and you are deserving of it!! I feel like that's something that we can use a reminder for when we encounter people like that, who seem to lack any of those things. You don't deserve any of the pain or sadness you go through, you deserve love and happiness and it will come to you, I'm sure of it <3

On a lighter note, I saw you saying you might be able to drop cmi 10 on the sixth? That's actually the date of my one year blog anniversary lmaooo what a coincidence. I'm sending you all the energy and motivation and hoping for a smooth writing process, Rid. Life is tough though so please don't worry too much about deadlines since I'm sure everyone is excited to read it whenever it comes out.

You also asked about unhappy endings and even though I think you might know my opinion on angst and sad things already, I just want to say again that I would read anything you wrote, Rid and I would sacrifice my very fragile heart if it means reading another one of your beautiful stories. It's funny because usually when it comes to books I don't mind sad things, in fact the heartbreaking ones are usually my favourites, but with fanfiction I think I just get too attached to the characters and it absolutely tears my heart apart when there's any angst.

Speaking of books, I've been reading more recently and I started a book yesterday where the main character's name is Rin and I'm not joking when I say that my brain read it as Rid the first couple of times. So I think that says a lot about how much you cross my mind I guess.

Sorry that I haven't dropped in much lately, for some reason 9/10 times when I open tumblr these days I feel overwhelmed at the thought of reblogging anything or talking to people 😔 And I've also been in and out of bad moods in general lately so yeah. Hoping that starting classes again, being busier and setting up some kind of routine will help me a bit.

What would happen to a Hogwarts student who upon first meeting Freyja thinks she's Irish not Scottish?

I reckon most Hogwarts students probably wouldn’t make that mistake. I feel like they’d be familiar with accents from their area, the way Aussies and Kiwis recognise and differentiate their accents easily, or Americans and Canadians.

So it would probably be a Hogwarts student who wasn’t born in the UK or Ireland, or who hasn’t spent a great deal of time there. Freyja wouldn’t mind though, it’s not something that offends her in the slightest. She thinks it’s pretty hard to mistake her strong accent, and would be flattered that it’s mistaken for (in her opinion) any of the much nicer sounding Irish accents.

Vice Versa ep 7

After last week's ep I had wished that ep 7 could be something bright and playful (like orange) but I thought we were in for a more muted ep, so I thought orange might have come later...but it seems that despite Aou's seemingly foreshadowing description of their next script ("It's a love story that seems funny but it's not) this ep was - wait for it - vice versa -> A love story that seems sombre but it's not...it's actually "lively...but contemplative" (Talay's interpretation of orange).

Anyway, many scenes had the usual red, blue, black, white, green, yellow (Pang's top in the below scene) and brown...

And it's interesting that the Sunset Orange palette included brown on the darker end (and yellow on the lighter) because this ep was quite serious in places. Like below, when Talay tells Puen he thinks Pang is Puen's portkey...and in a way Talay kind of has a point - if they were portkeys then wouldn't they have already dreamed and gone back? I've seen some people comment how it might be because Puen is holding back about his identity but I hope it's something more than this. Talay is therefore trying to push Puen away in order to protect him and this seems to be reflected in how very little red there is here (just a small object behind Talay by the sink).

Green also got paired with purple again, as complementary colours, when Talay was trying to get Puen and Pang to connect as portkeys.

And then again, four of the usual colours featured in Puen's bedroom (red and blue, and black and white), but more importantly the first bit of orange and it's when Talay and Puen have a moment of tussle and play on the bed and then in the bath. Incidentally, it was at this point I was writing how their interactions really did not look like people who were 'just friends'...the line between friends and boyfriends is being definitely blurred...and not long after this it cut to Fuse's wonderful t-shirt and I yelled at the screen (but more on that below).

Then, the colours shift to pastel tones (even Pangs beautiful shirt was a light blue with pink and yellow flowers) and I wonder if the pastel pink is to continue showing how Talay is trying to push Puen away towards Pang...

And so we get another of Fuse's fantastic commentary shirts and this one is as subtle as a slap in the face. More than that, it's providing the black against Talay's white, and the red against the blue of Talay's shirt...and the clothes that Talay changes into for the cinema are yellow and a very dark green. I like that the writing on the shirt is red because after the absence of red, and with Talay's insistance that Puen connect with Pang, this writing in red is an extra subliminal message...it really is about Puen. If only Talay could read English, I guess...

Anyway, at the cinema, I loved how the production team had complemented the yellow and blue in the lights and green and beige in the furniture with the characters' clothes. Notice with the absence of Puen there is also very little red again. I also liked the use of the flashback to the cinema scene in ep 5 when Talay was in an orangey-brown and white shirt and Puen had an olive-brown t-shirt and pale green shirt... It makes me wonder if they'll use more flashbacks to scenes which have colours that match a future episode colour.

After the cinema, Talay goes to visit Puen but again he's wearing a very pale pink shirt (ironically when he's stating once more that he doesn't like pink...sure Jan) and even though Puen joins the gang again in the below scene and at their road trip away, red is very much absent. Talay is continuing to push Puen away, to deny the connection they have and Puen is feeling more and more adrift.

At the association, it's not surprising that there is an abundance of the ep colour (since it's happened a few times now) but notice again that there is some red and blue as well as black and white (one could even say some yellow and green with the light and the plant...). I love the mural on the wall behind Dol, and the darker burnt orange and brown tones reflect the seriousness of the conversation between Dol and Talay. (I miss Joobjang!)

And so then we get the reconciliation and unspoken confession...and the frame is filled with the red-brown bricks of the arch (it's been subtle in the show but archways have been featured quite a few times). Need i say more?

Now...next week, I wonder again if it might be a charcoal palette...or...I've seen someone talk about sea foam green as being used this ep as a complement to sunset orange, so maybe it will be something similar to that...but I also wonder about red/pink now that Talay and Puen have 'chosen' each other... There doesn't seem to be much pink/red in the trailer but I feel like the ep colour is being featured a bit less that it was in the beginning, so the trailer might be misleading. We'll see!
