Personally the amount of people who are either "Jake is a stupid himbo" or "Jake is actively malicious" blow my mind. No, Jake isn't stupid, and he's not evil. He's a sixteen year old who is implied to have a mental disability and/or brain damage (it's not exactly clear, Caliborn claims they have the same developmental disorder and Dirk iirc worries that Jake hit his head too much, I guess you can take either with a grain of salt but I digress), and has not had meaningful real life interactions with other human beings in years. He is in the wrong for his actions, but it feels. Purposefully ignorant to claim he's just stupid or just evil for them.

He's socially stunted. He wants to emulate heroes in movies but lacks self esteem and experience. If the alpha kids had enough time to be more fleshed out (and let's be real, if Hussie cared about Jake) this might have been explored more thoroughly. He'd never had the opportunity to learn how to cope with a relationship, how to communicate his needs, or understand that he can't control how other people perceive him like he can through a computer screen.

He doesn't know healthy boundaries because he's never had to use them, and this goes both ways (allowing his friends to sexualise him and treat him like an object, as well as constantly complaining about his relationship with Dirk to Jane) Like yeah he does run away instead of communicating with Dirk and yeah he does dump all his problems on Jane. I love Jane, but one of her problems is her bottling up her feelings and people pleasing until everything blows up. She should have told him off much sooner, and while he was being a dick, it was partly because she allowed him to feel like it was okay to do, since she never told him it wasn't after the first few times or when she was starting to get aggravated.

His problems with Dirk are a little more complicated because we're never actually shown their relationship or how it broke down, but from what we can gather, Jake felt overwhelmed by Dirk's intensity and decided to ignore him rather than tell him try and avoid confrontation but leading to Dirk being frustrated and breaking up with him. Dirk claims he feels like he bullied Jake into a relationship, and though I personally think that's him making it seem worse than it was, it does mean that Dirk probably was trying to go too fast. I've best heard it is Jake being an introvert pretending to be an extrovert.

This is not to say I don't think people can't dislike or even hate Jake, but it's like. Idk. Misinterpreting a character and disliking that version of them is a little redundant to me.

As a supposed "new fan," I'd love to know the history of how the fandom reacted to Gamzee fans circa 2013. Who were the big pushers of that hatred towards them that weren't just Hussie (perhaps BNFs and friend-writers-employees of hers)?

sorry god himself could not make me invite that kind of discussion onto this blog <3 i dont think its relevant nowadays Who was pushing it unless you were there. as far as like climate at large though, early homestuck fandom had very very heavily bought in to hussies persona of smartest guy you know whos bigoted writing was totally actually intentional tongue in cheek injections you were supposed to read as ironic. which like sure they certainly Tried to do that sometimes and we can argue back and forth all day about the validity of "ironic" bigotry and whether it is comparable to "genuine" bigotry, who is allowed to say what, whatever. but it created a space where genuine critique, especially critique that was focused on social issues ESPECIALLY any social issues that could be linked to the accursed SJWs sweeping the internet with their extremist inclusionism, was discouraged and the method was largely to insist people were actually too stupid or bad faith to Get homestuck. been called a bad survivor sooo many a times in this space for caring about the irredeemable clown. that mixed with both that ever present self aggrandizing intellectualism hussie oozed + presented as the goal within this fandom, and ofc with his own insertion Into that fandom as its creator ended up building just an extremely shitty parasocial climate full of people that cared a lot more about dunks and being "right" (as decided by hussies characterizations and what he openly mocked) than they did about like.... not opening people who wanted to have conversations they did not like up to harassment. im not saying its an entirely alien space compared to the general hierarchical nature of fandomspace, but that level of interference from an author who was also very invested in seeming very cool and smart and unaffected at the expense of the crazy emotional freaks he could scapegoat to further that image AND avoid accountability for his writing decisions just.... sucked! ok im tired and theres always manylayers to this, idk if that was clear tldr it doesnt matter much anymore i just wish we fuckin learned something!

as far as classic homestuck 2012 ships go, these two are essentially the kings of it. i'm a big old gamtav fan, out of all the pairings with either of these characters i think this one is my favorite! i think they're extremely silly and stupid together and boys who are silly and stupid together fucking STAY together. the fluff potential with these two is insane you guys. tavros is a guy who really deserves some love. and gamzee is just so unabashedly fond of him. it will forever make me sad that they never got to just. be boyfriends. it makes me wonder how murderstuck would have gone if tavros didn't die :P

this is another character combo that i think would have an absolutely batshit insane living space. yeah sure come to gamzee and tavros's house and its an absolutely chaos disaster. disemboweled plushies from games of fidusspawn? check. floor littered with faygo bottles and random horns? check. why yes that is a unicycle leaning against the wall. wall covered in fairy posters? yep. karkat comes over to visit sometimes and is always absolutely appalled.

well. its 3:30 am and i've finished the entirety of homestuck once again. this is the first time ive read the comic in its entirety since act 7 was released, and honestly?

i have a lot less gripes with it than i did the first time around. i see a lot of the story on a broader scale now, and i can better appreciate the stupid bullshit it does sometimes as...probably just intentional. and i can appreciate that as a writing technique. something that seems frustrating and pointless on the surface actually having layers of symbolic and thematic meaning, despite the ironic detachment and scorn the comic itself has for the concept of such an analysis.

it didnt ever stop feeling like homestuck, at least, which was my main fear when i had to read events after [s] game over. it was primarily executed with character dialogue, with hardly any narration or pauses in between, but i found that that worked with what we were presented with. heres all our characters at the endgame, go nuts with reading how they interact with each other.

overall, i was being a huge pissbaby when it ended in 2016. it was overall a fine experience.

am i gonna read the epilogues? .......................ehhhh? maybe. i wanna finish pesterquest first before i touch that hot mess.

im still pretty wary of the epilogues, but i wanna approach it as a piece of literature rather than a "homestuck fan." :P

it's been a few days since i went up here. ive been informed that its kind of telling the extent to which im touched like deeply in my heart over the boring ugly ass places i spend my time but like lets be real here most people are basically on some hot mindless bullshit vis a vis beauty like youve got people talking about like. fucking. what. literally the most boring shit ever like just incapable of forming a single relationship with anything theyve ever seen unless they've been given the wordless "okay" for it from the world at large like people wear fucking makeup and shit. thats whats really gay i think.

theres a circle of nothing around the facility just boxing you in same way the heat does you know, which makes sense because no one wants to live around this place for the same reasons no one wants to live by an airport or a cemetery or anywhere drugs are produced in significant numbers, all of which they also do out here btw. lol. anyway it's a chain; youre contained first by the heat then by the machinery and then by miles of space, empty space not even horse trails or makeshift shooting ranges or nothing like that. you dont come out here you know theres no lights.

anyway personally i think there's a lot to be said for walking on something huge and hollow. i'm pretty significantly underweight and shorter than the average adult male even though thats what i am and i wasnt expecting the metal underneath me to cave but it did. nothing gave way of course but there's something interesting about the feeling of the "ground" literally caving in under your feet. im vaguely conscious that i should be afraid of this, but that's just another sensation.

the lights are off color here but your presence makes every one of them feel like a halo shining down. i dont make a habit of thinking about or expressing my feelings but sometimes i do feel them and i think you're a dumb bitch for asking any more of me than that

churning and gurgling under the dented metal beneath my feet is laid over by the dull roar of the fans. the wind blows and from what cant be less than five stories above the ground i look down and watch him move. it's always fascinated me the way clothing can frame a body; he looks different than he did before. i'd smile but i don't feel like it. thats okay though

i dont think anyone has given love to tmc the way yat does and i don't think anyone has really put their heart into making weird niche homestuck art the way ottiliere does (at least not in this era like ive been OVER this before if youve ever talked to me we are living in a post-post-homestuck society). which makes sense because the vast majority of modern fans (of anything) are altogether much more boring breed. no plumage or patterns or anything fun. but thats another thing. and also overly pessimistic of me but whatever i feel like if someone reads that and feels like theyre being called boring its because they know somewhere that theyre boring and missing out and maybe thats their wakeup call to start getting silly with it. or maybe no one cares i dont know i dont give a shit.

anyway the intitial interest in slickdirk was generated pretty specifically in the context of the two of them being psych warded together. typically this prospect alone would be like harlequin novel parody fanfiction type shit such that i wouldnt have any interest in it, but this was different from the get go on the basis that their interactions were never initially about romance.

dirk is self aware to the point of walking backwards. he's self obsessed, self conscious, hyperfixated-in the true sense-on how he presents himself. like all people like this, he's also constantly telling on himself. i'm speaking in terms of canon and otti's dirk here btw, this is true of both fundamentally. in terms of otti's vision specifically, though…it's dialed up, right.

people who think about themselves like this are inherently isolated from other people because, regardless of how they feel about themselves, they're very convinced they're better than everyone else. being in an institution full of other sick people can spur this line of thinking regardless of how untrue it is; once you've decided you're above the rest of the BRAINBROKE FREAKS around you, it's hard to even start to empathize with any of them! if you look back at some of otti's older posts you can kind of feel the extent to which dirk doesn't want jackshit to do with nothing going on in the hospital like just obviously has no interest in participating or anything like that in any capacity.

slick on the other hand like. really i can't write any of this without referencing yat's house essay about the midnight crew watching house and specifically spades slick watching house and how he would feel about it. forget everything i just said and go read that and then come back. okay so he obviously thinks about himself and his body and very specifically his disability in such a way that he is basically completely unaware of it in spite of living with it day to day. if you know what kind of guy im talking about here you know but also im going on good faith here assuming you read the youabandonedthem papers so even if you dont KNOW you should at least have kind of an idea what im referring to here.

the big draw between these two is that they're both in completely different subtypes of denial about themselves to vastly different effects. of course they'd be drawn to each other in this scenario…they're literally the ONLY NORMAL people in the whole building uhh have you seen the other guys in here. lol like what even.

and the thing is that even following up the initial theorized meeting in the ward, like, there's all this potential for what could come after…don't get it twisted this isn't some edgy folie a deux that im suggesting that would be so boring.

they're more than "bad for each other" even if they're not quite "good for each other" either. it isn't about an endgame or even necessarily "shipping" as a lot of people think of it. it's more like…the ways their differences and similarities line up feel aligned, even though it wasn't intentional, the same way some moments just feel "right". it isn't about how long the moment lasts or what its impact is, just that there was a moment where there wouldn't have been one if even a few tiny things had shifted. life is comprised of shit like that right. so when something like slickdirk comes along you can either balk at the absurdity of it or ride the wave.

orjust like passively observe thats an option too of course. no big deal it could literally never ever be a big deal im literally just out here trying to have fun trying to make myself laugh yk.

this is so vague. my headcanons are shifting and nebulous and aus are my constant companion in everything, but uhhhhhhghhusjkdjnsdg i think. roxy writes the same way dave draws comics. its extremely memey and meta and self aware and largely just for the personal lolz, and were all doing her a disservice by pretending her writing looks like roses, when in reality dirk is probably the one whod make comics the way rose makes books (which is probably why he doesnt make comics). its more of that thing where roxy and dave are the same and rose and dirk are the same ykwim. well YOU dont corvus but im sure someone else does

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

harvey is a heartwrenching character when written well, with a complicated view of morality, heartbreaking ties to our main hero, and a lot of internal conflict. something about such a hopeful character deadset on making a different in the system becoming a victim of it, and the potential he has as a vehicle for critiquing the law.

percy is my favorite character from pjo bc it was the very first time in my life i ever read a book and saw myself in it. hes aggressive, impulsive, and rebellious, he fidgets and has a hard time standing still, he acts on emotion without always thinking it through, he gets in trouble in school and hands his mom a murder weapon to kill his stepdad, hes just... hes a lot of the things ive always gotten in trouble for, things i couldnt help being, and hes a hero. he means everything to me.

vriska, i will maintain until the day i die, is one of the best homestuck characters- maybe just characters?- ever written. shes dramatic, shes impulsive, shes manipulative and mean and creative, and shes just so messy about it. shes a mean girl in a way that feels real, where her trauma impacts and shapes her as a person, and shes complex, with warring wants, and people she cares about, and dreams, and shes so messy. shes rough and rude and shes doing what SHE wants to, being a version of herself that feels right to HER, rather than some caricature of the hot badass evil lady. shes thirteen!! and she FEELS thirteen. shes a thirteen year old weird girl who is kind of an asshole, and she means literally fucking everything to me. shes a pirate!!!!! shes a swashbuckling badass dressing up in her larping outfit and yelling at her friends on the playground to swab the deck and she is the bestest ever, the end.

i didnt mean for each one of these to be longer than the last but here we are.

C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.

i hate jdedave peace and love it just feels weird as hell to me. dave, for the most part, is hyper respectful of other peoples choices and boundaries but when it comes to jade hes always trying to mke choices for her, to protect her, and it gets to the point where even jade points out how much it bugs her. jades crush on dave also seems to come from a place of misunderstanding to me, admiring a lot of the parts of himself that he exaggerates and pretends to care about as a result of trauma. it always felt like a kid crush that they shouldve grown out of with time. dave also just sort of seems to... go along with whatever romantic relationships people push him into at that age, rolling with whoever flirts with him jsut bc hes trying to maintain the image of a player, so its really hard to take him seriously any time he hits on someone?

So this pretty much happened when Radiation went "yo jit make something" and I was like "okay", and then later I was like "bluuuuuuh don't know what to write", and then Radiation went "do trollcops", and I went "no that's dumb, stupid dumb, what is trollcops even", and Radiation went "DO IT JIT YOU BUTT", and I was like "NO RADIATION I HATE EVERYTHING". And then, Mellotron samples happened, and here we are. Also, it should be pointed out that in the version with vocals, Trollcops (Radio Play), there's a name drop of the fan music piece that htis is based off of. Yes, it takes this long to re-use things, sometimes.

Besides that, I dunno, just enjoy it.

Don't tell anyone, but this is actually a remix of one of Jit's old fansongs called Under the Hat, which was a battle theme for Dad. So if your heart still pines for him... his soul and pipe are contained deep within this track.

Havoc to be Wrought was spawned from an idea for a short story I had in my mind about a man climbing the old bell tower of an abandoned church investigating strange sounds that had plagued a small town, only to be forced into a confrontation with the “King of Owls” once he reaches the top, and ending with the KoO cutting the bell rope that the man clung to and screeching in the night.

Things changed though.

Once I had actually started writing and refining it, I decided to change its message, from a mad owl thing to the mysterious demon in the troll’s session which had been recently mentioned in the comic (I wrote this sometime in Fall 2010). Also, yes, that is why there is distorted owl screeches at the end, although they were more meant to evoke the horrorterrors crying out in pain than owls by the time it was finished.

Contains some very powerful organ and some great chord progressions, but also some structural choices I am not completely proud of, which remained in the piece until its release months and months later because the original Finale file crashed on me before I had a chance to save it. So, rather than attempt reconstructing it, I went with what I had, and it stuck.

This is the second of the solo piano pieces on this album, at least in the main tracks, and a really late release as well, given that it first appeared in the comic some time around a year ago. I've held it back from getting released just so it could go on this record, so I'm glad it could finally go out.

This is also the only piece on the album that doesn't have a specific event to go along with it. Instead, I went for where it appeared in the comic when placing it, and see it as more of a small interlude. The intermission between Act 1 and Act 2 of a musical, if you will. The art is meant to go along with this as well, a sort of non-canon get-together of the first set of trolls and kids we know, and I can imagine them playing this record while they chill.

Maybe its because I grew up with Comics and Homestuck as two of the biggest 'fandoms' I was in, but one of the most frustrating things is seeing fans be so reductive of media analysis.

I don't know how well I'm going to articulate this, but so often I see character or plot discussions watered down to either "Its not that deep here's the canon facts and what the author says" or "it is that deep and the author is a genius for thinking of everything".

The first is usually snide and dismissive of fanon ideas as not just wrong but stupid, and the second is accepting of fanon nuance but accredits said nuance entirely to the author. Both attitudes get to the same end point, which is 'the creator knows best and cannot be questioned'.

Which is silly to me. Yes, authors will make narrative choices, including any in-universal explanations that 'justify' why a female character is dressed scantily or why X character is killed off or why certain events pan out the way they do. And sometimes authors will hint at certain concepts in subtext but never explicitly state them, but sometimes those hints are also just coincidences the fans find after the fact.

Stories are very much products of their creators, but those creators are just people. Their stories aren't always that deep, but fans can make it that deep. Its a collaborative art and I feel like its really important to remember that.

Homestuck avoids tackling race in the 'usual' sense, but the criticisms the comic and its author have amassed for handling the subject poorly and sometimes outright maliciously aren't unfounded, lol. It is not free from unsavory racist tropes. Not every criticism falls into a neat binary of "true/false". Homestuck Omits the concept of race while it is clearly biased towards looking at the world through a white lens, even when it tries to tackle systematic bigotry. That's where it fails. The ways it engaged with its black readers over the years are also far from praiseworthy. I get the impression a lot of new people have no idea trickstermode originally contained a caucasian-ification joke as some sort of response for fans drawing characters as black kids, but that was very much there and it sucked total ass.

Homestuck has racialized characters. It just so happens that the manner in which they're depicted - be it #ffffff skin or the amalgam of standardized troll features - can trick the distracted reader into believing this is a story free from the overall context & bias of race and the society we very much inhabit.

Things like Meenah being pretty clearly Black Coded, from wearing her hair in long locs/braids to speaking in AAVE as a quirk aren't an accident. Things like the fandom depicting Jade & Jake as disproportionately stupid/aggressive/unkempt/unfeminine because they're widely accepted as The Non-White darkskinned characters by the fans aren't an accident. The Striders being painted as white even though Dirk is introduced as a rapper-revolutionary whos survived the tyrannical rule of a government that enslaved the human race (with the help of prominent white people, if i might add) and tried to make the racial features of an entire population fit into an specific mold isn't, uh, an accident. Damara speaking in shitty google translate japanese and hitting all checkboxes for 'stereotypical oversexualized asian woman' is specially not an accident. (Gamzee is based upon ICP and its hugely white-focused, white-led culture. They liberally 'borrowed' aspects from black culture to make up their customs, sure, but that doesn't make them not white. I personally disengage with that discourse and have no interest in it. )

We don't exist in a world where race is obsolete. The art we make is not safe from that bias. Not even you, the reader, is absolved of racial discussion. It is productive to examine what we write and how we write it. Fictional caricatures of race have been used in propaganda for a looong time, and they still shape our media landscape and preconceived racist notions.

Racism? In your You? It's more likely than you think.

I'm very torn about andrew hussie being bullied online bc I don't exactly WISH that on people and it's a difficult topic bc it's like. on one hand andrew hussie is 41 years old and 16 year olds on tumblr aren't a form of legitimate oppression (at the same time that it can genuinely suck and feel bad and isn't something I'm a fan of, as someone who has been bullied online by 16 year olds) but also, it's difficult when andrew knowingly and consistently allows or does things that for a lot of reasons actually kind of suck? Because the brothers have done an episode in this show about thylacines, and I am obsessed with thylacines, and it was a much better show about thylacines than a lot of things I've seen that were aimed at "grownups". So, I watched the other episodes, and I learned a lot from them. I am actually a member of a conservation group and like other shows about animals, and I found that while there's a lot of silliness in the show, there's a lot more information in than there is in a lot of actual documentaries :)

You are correct that it's an actual educational show. I don't care for RPF, and the main characters are actual real people that I have MET, so I do not write fanfiction for it. But I like the fan art.

Chris and Martin are genuinely awesome people. I had the honour of having a fun conversation with them at an event and they told me about their experiences trying to find thylacines in Australia (sadly, not successful) and about looking for fossas in Madagascar (I also love fossas). They did find the fossas of course.

I read and write fanfiction for Transformers, Homestuck and Gravity Falls.

Most fanfiction of the Wild Kratts show does NOT interest me. People ship the brothers, which I personally find gross, but because I am not an anti with a brain full of fire ants, I ignore the existence of these fics.

Instead of complaining about them or sending the authors nasty notes, I go and read things that I actually enjoy. If you are an anti, you should try this. Fandom is supposed to be actually fun.

The era we live in is rough. We are still having a pandemic. I work in health care. We recently had an insurrection of racist assholes that tried to take over the government here in the USA. There has recently been a movement to undo all the progress we have made toward giving trans people and non-gender-conforming people their rights, which includes like over half my friends. While the world is actually a better place than it was when I was the age you probably are, in that people actually are shocked enough by the murder of black people by cops that they protest it, and same-sex marriage is legal, there are a lot of people out there who are really angry that the world is becoming less unfair and they are showing their vitriol and hatefulness all over the place.

So yes, I do enjoy shows that are intended for children. There are times when I really need 30 minutes of fun in which all of the problems will be solved by the end of the episode and none of them will be "people want to murder other people for stuff they can't help". Sometimes I just want to watch two guys' heroic self-inserts bash nasty rich people who want to poach wild animals for incredibly stupid reasons.

Now please run along and get off my lawn.
