In memory of Jack Fernsby

Jack grew up in Windenburg with his parents and two brothers on the family farm. He had a good upbringing, but unlike his brothers who both had ambitions to study and get an education, he didn't have any big dreams. When WWI broke out, he immediately wanted to enlist, but couldn't since he was far too young. Both of his brothers went off to war while Jack stayed at home. He went on to become good friends with his cousin Dorothy. Even though his brother George died early in the war, it did not deter Jack and as soon as he turned eighteen he enlisted. At first, Jack thrived at the front. He was a good soldier, but as the years went by the horrors of war started to wear him down. He then met Vera, who worked as a nurse alongside Dorothy and they immediately fell in love. The war damaged Jack's mental health and he developed shell shock, which made him turn to alcohol to cope. Despite many hardships, he managed to turn his life around after the war and lived his last years happily together with Vera in Brindleton Bay.

Jesse Fernsby, age range 25-32, heterosexual (questioning??). Jesse was born in England to a family that could only be described as down on their luck. They could never go long without something breaking in the house, and Jesse's father struggled to hold down a job. It was tough but they had each other. After the wedding ceremony, the couple held a reception at the Calloway mansion. The warm weather allowed them to stay outdoors and everyone enjoyed the warming rays of sunshine from the approaching summer. The party was exquisite with food and alcohol galore, just like the previous parties Charles Calloway had hosted.

Jack and Vera were the first ones to congratulate the newlyweds. It was a relief for them both that their daughter was married. Vera in particular had been worried about her daughter's future since she had seemed so lost for a while. Jack was also pleased, as he could not have wished for a better husband for his daughter.

Walter had even travelled all the way from Britechester to attend the ceremony. He had graduated from medical school with the highest grades and was looking forward to starting his career as a doctor. To his parents' surprise, he introduced them to a girl named Henrietta Timmons. He and Henrietta had met at the university and immediately took a liking to each other which resulted in their engagement a few weeks prior.

Harry was also there to congratulate his sister. He was pleased that she seemed so happy but also impressed that she had actually managed to charm Charles Calloway enough for him to propose. Hopefully, this marriage would benefit Harry as well. Therefore, he decided to speak with Charles.

"If you don't mind - I still have a business proposal for you," Harry said quietly, out of reach for others to hear. “I know you refused before, but now that you're my brother-in-law, I hope you can reconsider. After all, we’re family now.” "I know that Frances adores you and because of that I'm willing to reconsider", said Charles. "But you have to understand that I have my eyes on you. The Fernsby family often visited the Fowles during the day. Like Jack, both Dorothy and Philip had retired from their respective jobs, so there was plenty of time to spend together.

The topics of conversation mostly revolved around their children. Dorothy received weekly letters from Walter updating her on his schooling. He studied medicine because he wanted to become a doctor and thus follow in his mother's footsteps. Vera had a hard time hiding her envy because she had wished Harry too had started studying instead of disappearing. They hadn't heard from him in months.

Even though they all worried about Harry, they enjoyed each other's company. They had become great friends - having spent much of their lives together. Despite much hardship, they were grateful that their friendship had lasted after all these years.

The Fernsby home was finally at ease. Harry had returned home with Frances and Jack and Vera could finally relax, knowing that their boy was safe. Although they cross-examined him about where he had been, he refused to give them any answers. Since the relationship was still fragile, they chose not to push their son too much about his whereabouts. They were content, as long as the family was together.

Autumn came and a funeral was held for Jack. He meant so much to so many people and would be incredibly missed. Vera and Dorothy thought back to the wartime and how relieved they were that he had survived, grateful that he was allowed to live until now. They held each other in shared grief, as they were now both widows.

The only good thing was that Walter and Henrietta attended the funeral with their newborn daughter named Bettie Dorothy Fowles.

Life for Jack and Vera had slowed down after their children moved out. They had a lot of time for each other now and mostly spent their days in each other's company.

They were grateful for every new day they got together and tried to make the most of it, as they were aware that they were old and that their time would soon come to an end.

One early morning, Jack's body gave up. He had lived a long and eventful life and was satisfied with all he had accomplished. He took one last look at the house where he had experienced so much - and took his last breath.
