Seeing the last week of Vienna was an absolute blast (though a heartbreaking one in many ways) not the least because the cast just "let it all out" in so many fun ways. Witness Jan-Eike Majert and Hannah Kenna Thomas deciding to ship Victoria and Mungojerrie progressively throughout the week.

Jerrie takes notice of Victoria, catches her eye, and doesn't-quite-brush his hand against her before gesturing to her and turning away. Victoria is Intrigued.

This time Jerrie gets a little closer as Victoria looks for him -- and edges in to gently brush his hand against her leg. He gives the Audience an unabashed Stare before turning away.

Jerrie slides in but Surprise! this is not his Usual Victoria! Suzie Murphy has taken over for White Cat (a Surprise-- her last stage role was supposed to be the week before. Both Hannah and Johnny Randall were missing from their expected roles, leaving Riccardo and Suzie to step in).

Suzie is a proper Victoria--she touches paws with Carbucketty as she is *supposed* to do at this point. Jan!Jerrie comes in close only to notice that this is Little Worried Victoria and turns away like a proper Gentleman.

(Suzie Murphy always looks slightly Worried in her roles due to the adorable way she paints her eyebrows.)

Back to Hannah Victoria! Jerrie demonstrates his best Munkustance and leans in eagerly as Victoria turns back toward him. He reaches out to brush her elbow before turning away again.

And finally Jerrie moves in -- Victoria already turning towards him as he sneaks in a nuzzle. She makes a full turn in toward him as he runs his hands down her back in full classic position for the White Cat lift. and just as he gets his hands on her hips, he notices the Audience and sneaks away. He was So Close! (Bonus Sinisi!Carbucketty being his usual Dramatic Self in the foregound, not bothering to be anywhere near his usual spot. Apparently at this point Carbucketty has given up and relinquished his place to these two getting progressively frisky throughout the week.

Poor Sinisi spent most of this show (his last) weeping into his armwarmers and clutching his castmates.

Cats Vienna 25.05.2022

Another one of these yayyy!

This will be mostly me “fangirling” and I will be very subjective.

No I do not take critisism.

Today Anneke Brunekreeft played Bomba and I LOVE HER! I mostly seen her as Demeter but also as Tantomile and I loved her in every role. The main Bomba in Vienna plays her quite cold and Brunekreeft plays her a little bit warmer (?) if that makes sense.

Jo Lucy Rackham played Demeter and she is THE ABSOLUTE SUPER SWING. Talented, brilliant, knows every role she plays so well, is so much fun. No words.

I was so happy seeing them playing Demeter and Bomba together so I focused a lot on them.

Also todays shout out to Mr. Dominik Hees. He is the main Tugger in Vienna but hardly known by fans cause he is not as active on social media. He has an absolute amazing voice and brings so much fun and love to the role.

Next shout out to Petra Ilse Dam. She mostly plays Tantomile (today too) and sometimes plays Bomba. She is absolute amazing and I love the detail she brings to the role. She is very in sync with her Coricopats but not only defiened by them. She really has her own personality.

So some notes for today:

When Munkustrap (Auler) was singing the beginning of the Old Gumbie Cat Demeter and Bomba were sitting next to each other and holding hands. It seemed like Bomba was convincing Demeter, who wasn’t sure about joining, to go with her to sing. She gladly did after a short while. Together with Jellylorum (Obermeier) they were the happiest three cats, just hyping Jenny up.

Brunekreeft Bomba has an absolute amazing chemistry with Tugger and watching them during the Rum Tum Tugger is so much fun. Also: I do not know what’s going on between Tugger and Tantomile in Vienna but she likes him quite a lot and today they shook their asses together haha.

At the end of the Rum Tum Tugger when he sings and the girls scream, Bomba pettet Carbucketty (Nathan Luke) so he firstly stayed at her side. When she started to “feel herself” as reaction to Tugger and to ignore him, he seemed offended and moved to Bill Baily to kind of judge her together with him. Bill didn’t really care thou.

When Grizabella appeared Demeter was very sad that she couldn’t touch her. Bomba collected her and hold her arm/hand. First Demeter was looking away, but after a while she looked at Bomba. When she stood up to sing, Munkustrap wanted to stop her but Bomba stood up herself and gestured him to let her sing, what he did. Later Bomba joined her. There is like a mute dialogue between Bomba and Munk, it’s like him saying don’t interact with HER, and Bomba saying, let her sing, listen to her and at the end he lets her sing and listens.

Also Sinisi played Alonzo and I love how he feels the need to protect especially Victoria (Hannah Kenna Thomas) from Grizabella. Evil old lady.

At the end of Bustopher Jones Bomba was genuinely happy for Jenny when she got the flower.

At the beginning of Pekes and Pollicles Demeter clawed at Tugger’s when he made fun of Munkustrap. She need to protecc future boyfriend.

Also before the dogs of every nation part, Mungojerrie (Jan-Eike Majert) gave Rumpleteazer (Anna Carina Buchegger) a short clap on her behind (?), when she is on her way to pop up between Munk’s legs and then chest bumps Plato (Nicholas Li). It’s such a bro move and I love it. They always do it.

I LOVE THE FUCKING JELLY BALL SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mungojerrie usually enjoys the Bomba section very much. He loves Bomba. After the Bomba section Tugger carries her to the tire and they have some private time while everybody just keeps dancing. Today they also kind of kissed/touched their noses afterwards which was quite cute.

Second half of the Jelly Ball. V formation girls, Teazer danced for Tugger again, he got up and danced behind Jemima (Anastasia Bertinshaw), then before Bomba joined Misto, Bucky and the queens, she walked up to Tugger and he took her face between his hands and they had a short moment (today there were a lot of Bomba and Tugger, Bomba and Demeter interactions and I loved it).

SECOND ACT

Love how Demeter and Munkustrap great each other at the beginning of the second act, they seem kind of shy but in love. Also Tugger kind of nuzzeled Misto’s (Johnny Randall) hand but he wasn’t having it.

During Gus Bombalurina cleaned Alonzo and later let him lie on her. It seemed like he politly asked and she said yes (don’t know what’s going on between Alonzo and Bomba in the Vienna Revival, but they seem to like each other very much and I support).

Also Munkustrap lies next to Old D., has a small interaction with Jemima and then moves down to Demeter to interact with her. Today they nuzzeled each other’s head and Demeter lovingly clawed Munkustrap’s back when he left to get ready for the pirate number and he enjoyed it.

Barbara Obermeier, who is the main Jelly and played her today, has one of the absolute most beautiful voices and she puts so much acting into the Gus number, emphasizing important parts and hyping Gus up in a loving way. She really knows how to not sound monotone and I love her as Griddlebone. She is so much fun, dramatic and a little bit cheeky.

Something I never wrote before: Rumpleteazer is usually very sad when Gus enters the stage to sing his number and she kind of tries to leave but Mungojerrie convinces her to stay. After his number she is also very sad and it seems like Old Deut (Rory Six) starts the Skimbleshanks number to cheer her up.

Another thing today: At the end of Gus Carbucketty was lying on Alonzo’s legs. Usually Alonzo is not so happy about the Schlimms but today he let him cuddle.

Meghan Peploe-Williams played Cassandra today and she didn’t hesitate one second to tell on Electra. She is a fun Cassandra too, a little less proud then the main Cassandra I would say.

First Macavity appearence Mungojerrie hid behind Old Deut. Poor bebe was scared.

Love love love it so much. Enjoy it everytime.

During the Mungojerrie and Griddlebone part Demeter touched Bomba’s sideleg hehe. I don’t know why but all in all, no matter who plays them I love this part so much. Also Bomba was really feeling the footprints at scotland yard part, Demeter killed the chicken bones (too lazy to look up the english lyrics so have some vague ones).

I love the Macavity fight it’s just everything. Jo Demeter is always reaching out to Macavity (played by the talented Li), but shocked when he grabs her arm. Tantomile tried to hold her back, Bomba and Munk came to the rescue and after Demeter was freed, Bomba crouched over her to shield her from Macavity and that was everything I could have asked for. (Yes, play into my own headcanons pspspsps).

Also love how Vicky protecc Alonzo at the end. Hehe.

Misto number: Vienna palys that gag where Misto sets Tugger’s tale on fire and Tantomile is usually the first one to take care of him after that and see if he is alright. Hees Tugger knows every part of the Misto Choreo and he immitates smaller parts in the background which is cute and fun. He also cuddles with Bomba until it’s time to hype the conjuring turns. Tantomile got her private hip show during the second verse and today Coricopat was nowhere to be seen to look offended. He only joined her when she was following Tugger.

Also Carbucketty was very bussy today playing with the red cloth he nearly forgot to rais his hand. He liked the red big thingy very much.

Today after Grizabella was reaccepted by the tribe after Demeter and Bombalurina touched her they both held hands and looked so happy. Also Electra and Victoria where holding hands / cuddeling during the heavyside layer part.

All in all: Love everybody, great show. Jo and Anneka gave me so much Demeter and Bombalurina interactions, very much appreciated.

I don’t have a lot in me for this month, but I wanted to at least have something for Day 1.

Ball

If anything is to be known about me, it should be that I am obnoxious AF about the last two minutes of the Jellicle Ball. My obnoxious rambling can be found below.

There is so much that's just good in the ball, so so so much to love, but there's something about the energy of Princess Louise that makes me want to immediately get up and join in (lol like i ever could) I love the wiggles, I love the kicks, I love to complain that more Tuggers should be allowed to join in that section you let Johnny P do it GIVE ME TUGGERS IN PRINCESS LOUISE I love how they're all dancing together and how the cats in the back will often join in either by rocking out or doing some of the movements.

The transition in the music into Warsaw causes a shiver to run down my back without fail. And that final minute. I can't I love watching them work together for the finale. Yes, they move in waves sometimes but this isn't about any one group or any particular cat - it's about the whole clowder working together to reach the finale of their special celebration of themselves and each other. It's exhilarating to sit through in the theater. Absolute perfection.

The list goes on, there’s definitely more that belong here, but I’m just listing off the top of my head.

From that handful though, Bryce, Drew, Ray, and Andrea are particular favourites - Simon too, and I wish there was more high quality footage of him :[

But no yeah, not a chance of me picking a favourite, unless I default to Drew - since ‘98 has a lot of what I picture in my head as being the “canonical” versions.

I was SO SAD during this show because I knew it would be the Very Last (spoiler: it wasn’t. But I didn’t know that!!)

(I was also sad because I was on the other side of the stage from elegantly lounging staring into your soul with his pretty eyes Alexanderstrap. XD )

The guy sitting next to me was SO not happy to be there. It looked like he had been dragged to the show by his very enthusiastic girlfriend, who was decked out to the nines in glitter and sparkles with cat ears and SHE was obviously super excited to me there. Mr. Wet Blanket kept looking at his watch and didn’t clap or react to anything. So I had to be extra enthusiastic to make up for it. Fortunately there was a child a few seats over and it is always so lovely to watch how the performers interact with children.

Today we have Sinisi!Admetus! He decided to hang out on the ladder on my side for Naming of Cats so for @cryptidvoidwritings I stared HIM Down. And Got a Hiss and Paw Bat for it! 😋 (Spicy boy!)

I would just like to register my appreciation for the little swaying bit that Munkustrap does while singing Gumbi. Thank you. (Also his beautiful little leg lifts--excuse me delicate leggies, per @whitmerule 😌)

Also the world’s most adorable little toe tap in the back with Mistoffelees.

Oh my GOD watching Munkustrap during Tugger is hysterical. I really like the way they play the friendly relationship between Munk and Tugger in Vienna! There may be eyerolls, but they are exasperated or affectionate—not hostile. Munkustrap is really concerned about getting everyone out of the way for Tugger’s number! Bomba in particular gets shooed away (Munk probably considers her an enabler).

BUT once he’s out of the way and on the tire he goes with it. When Admetus takes a break from making Heart Eyes at Tugger he goes to hang out by Munk and Munk repeatedly needs to push his leg down because Admetus is blocking his view and preventing him from crawling forward on the tire.

OH and Bill Bailey gets a little overwhelmed by everything and requires Munkustrap cuddles. When he gets a little antsy Munkustrap covers his eyes 🥺

(The fact that this was Alex and Matt just made it that much funnier)

But the time Tugger is done everyone—Misto and Munkustrap and all—are bopping right along and Munkustrap 100% starts swinging his hips too and Everyone’s having a grand time until who is that weird cat?

The Vienna Cats do NOT like Grizabella. Lots of hissing. Skimble guides Jemima out of the way and Jemima spends the rest of the number making 🥺 eyes at him. (Anastasia Bertinshaw is 100% a Cryptid Jemima)

All the other kittens get snatched out of the way pretty aggressively. Carbucketty is once again tossed to the wolves by his fellow toms and scratches Grizabella pretty much out of fear. Munkustrap rears up and hisses at them AND Grizabella, and everyone cowers.

The STARE DOWN between Grizabella and Munk during “Remark the Cat” gave me chills. Munkustrap practically had Murder in his eyes and deliberately towers over her.

Demeter tries to reach out to Grizabella several times during the show and each time Munkustrap stops her.

Anneke is a warm and sensual Bombalurina—I really liked her.

Alas I do not get a chance to get nudged by Bustopher’s Spoon this time around but I do get a front row seat to the Adorableness that is Carbucketty and Bill Bailey pouncing on Bustopher’s fuzzy Spats. Jenny loses it when she gets the rose 😊

Every single pair I have watched as Jerrie and Teazer are fantastic and these two are no exception!

Vicky Riddoch and Tommie Luyben have definitely more of a “twins” vibe than the more “gazing into each other’s eyes” vibes than Jo Lucy and Jan-Eike were giving off. They are cuddly and adorable.

When Tugger appears Munk runs up to the tire to greet him—and shushes Jerrie and Teazer who thought it was time to do the Tugger Number—because Tugger is Doing a Serious for once and this is Important!

Once again I just love how the performers handle this moment—there is no Munkustrap eyeroll—only a sudden headtilt and surprised sideglance before the dawning realization on Munkustrap face that yes! This is Tugger! And Yes! He is not here to cause chaos but to be supportive and genuine. It’s lovely.

Lucius Wolter as Old D takes his time while entering to nod and wave with dignity at the audience. It’s sweet.

Munkustrap is once again smiling so proudly at his line of Pollicles doing their March and gesturing to Old D. “Dad! Dad look! Dad look at what I did! Aren’t they great!”

I have a note here that says: “Got a LOOK from Auler during P&P” so I’m going to presume that’s a thing that happened XD

Jellicle Ball is gorgeous and amazing and I never ever want to stop watching it.

After intermission the cats begin to come back on stage and Aulerstrap starts creeping elegantly past me to his place in Moments of Happiness. And as he is moving he sees me looking at him (probably with desperate, puppy dog look) and holds my eyes with his (lovely, gentle, smiling, enigmatic, soft eyed direct) gaze and gives me a meow!! 😭😭😭😭😭

Raffish Crew time!

I wonder who is in charge of vacuuming that stage and how many little white fluffs they find from Griddlebone’s costume?

Oh my GOD the guy next to me actually starts checking his watch when it’s time for Skimble and what can I do except try and be extra enthusiastic to make up for him? (Honestly how is anyone in the audience not bopping their heads and going “Woo woo!” during Skimble?) There’s a part in Skimble where the kittens are on the ground basically doing “The Hundred” from Pilates I never noticed that before XD

Tugger gets to help Old D follow the Train!

Also Aulerstrap runs past Mr. “What time is this show over” to get his wheel and sees me and gives me a Paw and a Big Grin!

Munkustrap is SO happy during Skimble and make the Big Wheel go Super Fast!

(Seriously this makes me almost cry-in a happy way—because during so much of this show you can see hints of Kitten!Munkustrap. Imagine how excited and adorable he must have been at Jellicle Balls when he was younger, and how incredibly important all these fun activities and stories are to him now)

Sinisi!Macavity is SUPER intense. Very much feeling himself (it is Sinisi after all), but very quick moving and feral. A really excellent Macavity.

(Let me watch the Mistoffelees number forever and ever please it is so much fun and so gorgeous)

All the cats really want to be Misto’s assistant EXCEPT Cassandra, but Tugger doesn’t let her escape. Under the blanket she goes!

(Munkustrap excitedly points to Victoria, who is sitting below him, and has to console her when she isn’t picked)

When Misto blows out the spotlight all the stars on the ceiling roll back as well. It’s so beautiful.

This time I have a view of the Old D group during Memory, and watching Munkustrap’s face journey is one of my favorite parts of the show. Victoria stares right at Grizabella the whole time, and the kittens turn first. Everyone welcomes Grizabella back, Munk goes to Old D to confirm the choice, and Up, Up, Up to the Heavyside layer they go—with Old D enveloping Grizabella in his arms and Munkustrap leading the cats in a whole body bow to her.
