"A radical reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic dance musical based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.
Inspired by the Ballroom culture that roared out of New York City over 50 years ago and still rages on runways around the world. Staged as a spectacularly immersive competition by Zhailon Levingston (Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Chicken & Biscuits) and PAC NYC Artistic Director Bill Rauch (All the Way), with all new Ballroom and club beats, runway ready choreography, and an edgy eleganza makeover that moves the action from junkyard to runway.  Come one, come all, and celebrate the joyous transformation of self at the heart of Cats and Ballroom culture itself."

I don’t have a lot in me for this month, but I wanted to at least have something for Day 1.
Ball
If anything is to be known about me, it should be that I am obnoxious AF about the last two minutes of the Jellicle Ball. My obnoxious rambling can be found below.
There is so much that's just good in the ball, so so so much to love, but there's something about the energy of Princess Louise that makes me want to immediately get up and join in (lol like i ever could) I love the wiggles, I love the kicks, I love to complain that more Tuggers should be allowed to join in that section you let Johnny P do it GIVE ME TUGGERS IN PRINCESS LOUISE I love how they're all dancing together and how the cats in the back will often join in either by rocking out or doing some of the movements.
The transition in the music into Warsaw causes a shiver to run down my back without fail. And that final minute. I can't I love watching them work together for the finale. Yes, they move in waves sometimes but this isn't about any one group or any particular cat - it's about the whole clowder working together to reach the finale of their special celebration of themselves and each other. It's exhilarating to sit through in the theater. Absolute perfection.

The more I listen to the Jellicle Ball, the more I realize that it's just an accurate representation of when cats get the zoomies....

Whats the jellicle ball really like in real life? I feel like you know better then anyone
I've mentioned before that the Jellicle Ball happens during the full moon in January. First month of the year, first full moon, as the world is 'new' and a Jellicle will be chosen to receive a new life. Full moon phase = a full life having passed.
Assuming it goes uninterrupted/functions as normal, there's a couple of traditional songs & dances spread throughout the night (such as the Invitation to the Ball, the Pas De Deux, Journey to the Heaviside Layer, Ad-dressing of Cats) between introductory songs, which are popular songs about a particular cat that get shared a few times over the years(ex: Skimbleshanks, Gus), not only for entertainment but to introduce the youngest kittens to their elders, as well as original songs created throughout the year, and a handful of traditional songs passed down throughout the years to dance to. And of course there's usually a play performed, a new one almost every year, narrated by Munkustrap.
There's time for rest and relaxation, chatting and catching up, storytelling, group cuddling or grooming, as well as an opportunity for mated pairs to slip away for a while and have some romance. Overall it's a lot less structured though than the show would indicate, and cats are free to participate where they want or otherwise stay on the sidelines, and besides the traditional songs, it's very free-flowing, with various activities happening simultaneously depending on where a cat's interest lies. Some cats will bring treats they've hunted (or were given by their owners) to share, and everyone just has a nice time. It really is a big family party essentially, and some years there are guests from other tribes or cats looking to join the Jellicles too.
The ball always opens with a cat who has recently come of age or is currently coming of age performing a solo, which Vic had the honor of doing the year of the 'titular' ball, and technically ends after the Jellicle choice is sent off with the Ad-dressing of cats, though sometimes another song or two is enjoyed as the Junkyard slowly grows quiet from visitors returning home or otherwise retreating to their dens with the sunrise. It's just a wonderful night to celebrate life, old and new, with the cat coming of age as a sort of guest of honor alongside the cat chosen as the Jellicle choice at the end of the night. Like one cat is leaving this phase of life as another enters it.
Some cats pledge themselves to their mates, some sing a song about their loved ones, or others find a way to tell a story about themselves so that others might know them better. But more is really said through dance: who dances with who, how you dance together. On the surface level it's a party, yes, but when you get into the emotion of it, it's a time to really reaffirm your relationship ties and show others how you appreciate them. You really feel the eyes of the Everlasting Cat on you, feel this palpable sense of excitement and affection at times throughout the night, and it makes you feel powerful and loved, and at your most authentic. You are seen by those around you for who you are, and you see them clearly too. This clarity is fleeting, has a kind of ebb and flow that makes it all seem quite dreamlike, but nevertheless impactful.
When the sun rises and the moon disappears and that tingle of the Everlasting Cat's magic fades a little, it's so bittersweet, and everyone is tired and happy and just loathe to let it end. It can be a little emotional too, depending on who the Jellicle choice was. You tend to think about it for days afterwards. But if you have a mate you may be a little preoccupied thinking about kittens instead, because the Everlasting Cat encourages couples to bring some new Jellicles into the world after the ball. Rowrow. "New year, new kittens, get to it!" so to speak. There's a chance the Jellicle choice may be reincarnated in them too, but that's not always a guarantee. Sometimes the reincarnated Jellicle choice finds their way to the Junkyard another way.
But yeah. It's just a splendid time, best night of the year, really. Magical.
And @ everyone no I don't want to hear arguments or opposing ideas this is my kin experience either agree and reblog or ignore bye <3

Season 1, Episode 35: The Jellicle Ball
Favorite moment: The moment with Grant and Yeet at the end. Yes, I know it's sad. I like sad things.
General thoughts:
Love the intro. Usual Suspects parody? Always down for that.
The dad fact section is super fun. Love the in-character bits, especially from Will.
I really like Berry the bare bugbear. She's fun.
This is a fun episode. Lots of cool world building with the football game. The characterization of Grant as a nervous teen with a crush is so real. Darryl with cringe dad energy is great. Matt does a fantastic job at making Grant feel embarrassed. I get secondhand embarrassment from some of these bits.
Sports center montage is great. Since Henry gets to just be a bird, there's no need to play it the whole thing. And Will and Freddie have great commentator voices.
The end of this episode is heartbreaking. Hats off to Anthony for doing a scene with himself and thank you Beth for eavesdropping. I can't imagine this show without that moment.
I think it's because the dramatic moments are so few and far between, but I go back and re-listen to these moments more than the goofs. I've listened to the last 20 minutes of this episode a lot. Like, a lot a lot. And it's always heartbreaking. And always well-acted drama. I love it.
Next time, more football. And an eldritch Charleston chew.

I like the idea of the Jellicles having a newcomer to the Ball every other year or two. Because, "What the heck are you all doing?" would be a recurring question, and it would give our favorite kitties an excuse to revisit some songs from Grizabella's Ball to introduce the new cat to everyone.

Preparations for Munkustrap and Demeter’s (vampire au) Jellicle Ball in their flower and candle-adorned ballroom where everyone wears the finest silks and dances until dawn with the moonlight streaming in through long window panes and the promise of forever mellows in the air
yes, i’ve been lovingly hoodwinked into creating another AU
