The congressional committee that investigated the Jan. 6 rioting at U.S. Capitol voted unanimously on Thursday to subpoena former President Donald Trump. Before voting to call Trump to testify, the committee presented evidence and witnesses that would tie Trump directly with the violence in the capital. "We have a responsibility to seek out answers from the man who started this whole thing. Every American has the right to these answers, so that we can protect our Republic now," stated Republican Rep. Liz Cheney from Wyoming, vice chair of the committee. Subpoenas were issued to request testimony under oath by the former president and documents related to the attack. Tweeted Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger from Illinois, "We just voted unanimously for Donald Trump to subpoena." "Our democracy demands it. Our constitution demands it. It is the truth that demands it." The committee presented evidence to support its claim that Trump knew he lost but continued to seek power. One of the evidence included a secret order to withdraw all U.S. soldiers from Somalia and Afghanistan days after the election. General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff testified that Trump wanted to "leave the problem up to the next guy". Andy Biggs, a Republican from Arizona, was one of those who were critical of the subpoena. Biggs tweeted, "The illegitimate January6 Committee's vote in favor of subpoenaing President Trump is a political hatchet job interpreted by a politically hatchet committee." He said, "This committee was illegitimately created, in violation of House Rules, and is organized for search and destruction of perceived political enemies." It is expected that the final report of the committee will be published in December, before it closes down in January.
