Time Travel Question 28: Murder and
Disappearance Edition II
Given that Judge Crater, Roanoke, and the Dyatlov Pass Incident are credibly solved, though not 100% provable, I'm leaving them out in favor of things ,ore mysterious. I almost left out Amelia Earhart, but the evidence there is sketchier.

Is what you say about Huey Long also true of Jimmy Hoffa, who also seems to have this weird romanticism among sections of the left who see Robert Kennedy as a union-busting villain (The Wire runs with it in the second season with the dockworker's union chief who puts him in the same breath as Reagan).
I think it's fair to say that the attitude that Jimmy Hoffa was a hero of the working man and that RFK was a union-buster had a real constituency...in the 1950s. These days, it's exceedingly marginal (let's be honest, a lot of sections on the left aren't going to remember who Jimmy Hoffa was), and in the case of the Wire, I think it's meant to show how the dockworker's union has a very old-fashioned and paranoid-defensive mindset - which fits with the more conservative politics of the ILA, if I'm being honest.
But yeah, Jimmy Hoffa sucked. To the extent that he's still lauded, it's for producing "good contracts" (on economic issues) in his core industry of truck drivers, even though a lot of that money got stolen in the form of misappropriated dues and pension money. (Then again, there is an irony that the pension funds actually generated higher returns back when they were mobbed up than when they were taken over by the government and turned over to Wall Street.) But the bigger issue, imo, is the way that Hoffa relentlessly fucked over anyone outside his core industry by signing sweetheart contracts that boxed out actual union drives (something of a Teamster tradition, sadly), and then the way that he and his protoges used violence to shut down anyone who was trying to achieve union democracy in the Teamsters or actual unionism in non-core industries.
