Ruins of Tulum, state of Quintana Roo, Mexico
Tulum is the site of a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city which served as a major port for Coba, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have resulted in very high fatalities, disrupting the society and eventually causing the city to be abandoned. One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is today a popular site for tourists.
The site might have been called Zama, meaning City of Dawn, because it faces the sunrise. Tulum stands on a bluff facing east toward the Caribbean Sea. Tulúm is also the Yucatán Mayan word for fence, wall or trench. The walls surrounding the site allowed the Tulum fort to be defended against invasions. Tulum had access to both land and sea trade routes, making it an important trade hub, especially for obsidian. From numerous depictions in murals and other works around the site, Tulum appears to have been an important site for the worship of the Diving or Descending god.
Tulum was first mentioned by Juan Díaz, a member of Juan de Grijalva's Spanish expedition of 1518, the first Europeans to spot Tulum. The first detailed description of the ruins was published by John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood in 1843 in the book Incidents of Travel in Yucatan. As they arrived from the sea, Stephens and Catherwood first saw a tall building that impressed them greatly, most likely the great Castillo of the site. They made accurate maps of the site's walls, and Catherwood made sketches of the Castillo and several other buildings. Stephens and Catherwood also reported an early classic stele at the site, with an inscribed date of AD 564 (now in the British Museum's collection). This has been interpreted as meaning that the stele was likely built elsewhere and brought to Tulum to be reused.
Work conducted at Tulum continued with that of Sylvanus Morley and George P. Howe, beginning in 1913. They worked to restore and open the public beaches. The work was continued by the Carnegie Institution from 1916 to 1922, Samuel Lothrop in 1924 who also mapped the site, Miguel Ángel Fernández in the late 1930s and early 1940s, William Sanders in 1956, and then later in the 1970s by Arthur G. Miller. Through these later investigations done by Sanders and Miller, it has been determined that Tulum was occupied during the late Postclassic period around AD 1200. The site continued to be occupied until contact with the Spanish was made in the early 16th century. By the end of the 16th century, the site was abandoned completely.
Tulum has architecture typical of Maya sites on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. This architecture is recognized by a step running around the base of the building which sits on a low substructure. Doorways of this type are usually narrow with columns used as support if the building is big enough. As the walls flare out there are usually two sets of molding near the top. The room usually contains one or two small windows with an altar at the back wall, roofed by either a beam-and-rubble ceiling or being vaulted. This type of architecture resembles what can be found in the nearby Chichen Itza, just on a much smaller scale.
Tulum was protected on one side by steep sea cliffs and on the landward side by a wall that averaged about 3–5 meters (9.8–16.4 ft) in height. The wall also was about 8 m (26 ft) thick and 400 m (1,300 ft) long on the side parallel to the sea. The part of the wall that ran the width of the site was slightly shorter and only about 170 meters (560 ft) on both sides. Constructing this massive wall would have taken an enormous amount of energy and time, which shows how important defense was to the Maya when they chose this site. On the southwest and northwest corners there are small structures that have been identified as watch towers, showing again how well defended the city was. There are five narrow gateways in the wall with two each on the north and south sides and one on the west. Near the northern side of the wall a small cenote provided the city with fresh water. It is this impressive wall that makes Tulum one of the most well-known fortified sites of the Maya.
There are three major structures of interest at the Tulum archaeological site. El Castillo, the Temple of the Frescoes, and the Temple of the Descending God.
Among the more spectacular buildings here is the Temple of the Frescoes that included a lower gallery and a smaller second story gallery. The Temple of the Frescoes was used as an observatory for tracking the movements of the sun. Niched figurines of the Maya “diving god” or Venus deity decorate the facade of the temple. This “diving god” is also depicted in the Temple of the Diving God in the central precinct of the site. Above the entrance in the western wall a stucco figure of the “diving god” is still preserved, giving the temple its name. A mural can still be seen on the eastern wall that resembles that of a style that originated in highland Mexico, called the Mixteca-Puebla style, though visitors are no longer permitted to enter.
The Temple of the Descending God consists of a single room with a door to the west and a narrow staircase that was built on top of another temple that served as its base.
In the niche located at the top of the door stands a sculpture that’s found throughout Tulum. He has wings, a headdress and holds an object in his hands.
Also in the central precinct is the Castillo, which is 7.5 m (25 ft) tall. The Castillo was built on a previous building that was colonnaded and had a beam and mortar roof. The lintels in the upper rooms have serpent motifs carved into them. The construction of the Castillo appears to have taken place in stages. A small shrine appears to have been used as a beacon for incoming canoes. This shrine marks a break in the barrier reef that is opposite the site. Here there is a cove and landing beach in a break in the sea cliffs that would have been perfect for trading canoes coming in. This characteristic of the site may be one of the reasons the Maya founded the city of Tulum exactly here, as Tulum later became a prominent trading port during the late Postclassic.

Boardgame: The grizzled
👥 2-5 players
⏰ 30 minutes
The Grizzled is a cooperative game about survival in the trenches during the first World War where players win or lose together.
The art is drawn in a charming Hergé-esque style which beautifully translates the sad yet strong camaraderie this game hopes to relay.
This is currently one of my favourite cooperative games but I do not recommend playing 2-player in this game since the automa is slightly lacklustre. I've heard they rectify this in the game's expansion, although I've yet to try it.

AG Jaeger: *Sighs and gets up* Very Well. It costs me nothing and if that’s all it takes for you to comply then, so be it.
Tumblr media
AG Jaeger: You never were a greedy girl. You just had a greedy [redacted]. A very, very greedy [redacted]. Always so terribly conflicting.
Most girls ask for more things but not my Scribbles. No. She’s a simple girl at heart, who, for the right price, is willing to do away with the child’s play just for a slice of nostalgia and endless days of being deliriously satisfied and pleasantly sore.

AG Jaeger: I’ll have a contract of terms and conditions drawn in 48hrs. You’ll have 1 week to read it. I’ll be in Guam and will return, expecting a definitive decision.
When you agree… and you will agree… I’ll personally begin to process you out of this… hell… our darling, Clare has so graciously confined you to. She can be quite harsh but since you’ll be under my protection, there wouldn’t be much she could do.

AG Jaeger: I warn you though, kitten. You’ll belong to me once we’re outside. Horny or not. You are mine. Step out of line or betray me and you’ll end up somewhere dark, damp and cold.
You know this better than anyone. Peonies don’t fair well in the cold, do they? It’d be a shame if I’d let my kitten fall to a similar fate. But… I’ve no doubt in my mind about you. Agree to the conditions I send and I’ll take care of you. Just like I always used too. You can write to your heart’s content. If you’ll have the strength too.
I must get going now, but I’ll see you next week. Be good and try not to ruin any more bedding. You are upsetting, and petrifying the prison warden. *pats head*

Alan Oldham Reintroduces JOHNNY GAMBIT For A New Generation (Interview)
Tumblr media
Alan Oldham is what society now calls a multi-hyphenate, but in times past, the term was Renaissance man.
For the past three decades plus, he has been an innovative purveyor of electronic music and a comic book writer and artist extraordinaire. Oldham started his trek as an eclectic art fan during the ‘80s in his Detroit hometown. He combined his love of the German Expressionist movement in film, the clean lines of Art Deco-inspired objects and more to start writing the narrative and visuals for his characters. The first major result was his trench coat-laden hero JOHNNY GAMBIT. Oldham hit paydirt and was signed to Hot Comics out of Chicago in 1986. The company folded soon after and the character would have two more issues published in 1987-88 by Detroit’s Eclectic Press.
Oldham did not have any time to think about the next move for JOHNNY GAMBIT because he was busy creating the cover art for the first Detroit Techno releases from childhood friends like Derrick May and Juan Atkins. These same friends also supplied him with music for his influential Fast Forward radio show being broadcast on WDET. This writer remembers listening to Oldham play Detroit Techno, house music and industrial in the early morning hours as listeners would call in and get an education on the new sounds that have laid the foundation for today’s myriad of electronic artists. He also worked as a DJ for Mike Banks’ sci-fi and funk-dipped techno crew Underground Resistance. As the ‘90s moved on Oldham started making his own music and founded the Generator and Pure Sonik labels.
Today, Oldham is just as excited about creating as he was years ago. A current resident of Berlin, he still travels the world as a DJ and has had art exhibitions in several countries. He is having a rebirth of sorts with JOHNNY GAMBIT and a Kickstarter relaunch. The new graphic novel is bringing GAMBIT back with a remastered 2 CD set. I spoke with Oldham last month shortly after his set at the Charivari Music Festival in Detroit. We talked about GAMBIT, the early days of Detroit Techno, and what it is about the city that drove him to greatness among his many other career-defining moments.
“It just motivates you to push further so that’s one thing about Detroit. It’s not an easy place. No one’s going to pat you on the back and tell you good job. If anything, they will shit on you. So, it motivates you to push forward, to push internationally and outside of the city.“
How did you decide to bring Johnny Gambit back now?
I’d been working on the book for almost 15 years now. I started it in 2007 and it’s been kind of in the back of my mind to bring back JOHNNY. We did a run in the ‘80s and I didn’t get a chance to finish the original story because my publisher(s) went out of business and then time went by so I thought I’d just reboot it completely.
What was your original inspiration for the character?
Well, that’s a really good question. JOHNNY GAMBIT is basically the kitchen sink character for everything I liked at the time; Japanese animation, Japanese Manga, “Miami Vice,” “Love & Rockets,” the movie “Metropolis” by Fritz Lang, Art Deco design, prototype cars that were never made, and there was a comic back in the ‘80s called “Mister X” that was a huge influence.
I saw where Marvel later came out with the character in “Uncanny X-Men” #266.
There was a girl, well, woman now, that I met at the old Chicago Con back in ’86, and we became friends. Turns out she worked for Marvel so we stayed in touch. It turned out I was going to New York for my first visit back in ’87 and she invited me up to visit Marvel. That was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me ‘cause you got to see the real Mighty Marvel bullpen with your own two eyes. So I got to NYC, went up there and I had a bunch of my old JOHNNY GAMBIT number ones with me and she introduced me to a few of the editors like Archie Goodwin and Carl Potts, and I was just leaving my comic as a calling card.
Fast forward to 1990, I’m at Todd Johnson’s old comic shop in Ferndale, and I notice a character named Gambit with the hair to one side and a trench coat. But they gave him powers and they changed it enough so where you can’t sue them. You know how it is, they take the idea and add just enough to it so they can say hey, we came up with this on our own. But the resemblance was uncanny, no pun intended. So yeah, there’s nothing you can really do about it. At this point, it’s just an interesting story. Read more.

I love all your YSBLF opinions. It's hard to find nuanced takes in other platforms tbh
I read that you have also seen the mexican remake, and boy do I have many feelings about Aldo (and not the good kind) which in part made me appreciate that Michel's role was never expanded. He served his purpose perfectly well which was to give Armando a worthy rival for Betty's affections (even if she never felt that way about Michel). Aldo, however, was given too much importance even over Lety's character growth and development. For instance, her great triumph as the president of Conceptos was completely overshadowed by Aldo's involvement (in fact, the whole Turismo Gastronómico project was all about him) and to make matters worse, they make her, and Tomás, look like incompetents who couldn't notice that they had exceeded their budget beforehand thus officially failing in their roles to keep the company afloat (Betty and Nicolás would never tbh). And they did all of this to make the story even longer even if it was at the expense of the main character. In fact, while she was in a relationship with Aldo, she barely did anything for Conceptos and only remained the president because of Aldo's conditions (he says he acquired Conceptos' debt to set Lety free from her ties to Fernando and his family, but something about this whole thing seemed manipulative to me even if it was a great act).
The extension of the plot only benefited Fernando who did redeem himself and worked hard to get the Conceptos out of debt. Admittedly, Armando also needed a few more episodes of a redemption arc to be more sympathetic with the general public. Although, I do think that we could see his change for the better by the end of the series.
Anyways, sorry for the long essay but it's soo good to finally find someone who has seen multiple versions and has such great opinions such as yourself.
I completely agree with your statement that without all these extra episodes, it could have been an excellent remake.
I've only seen opinions via tiktok comment sections and theyre all horrible. Ive heard instagram and fb are worse. It's like they watched a completely different novela. Like, if you want to talk about who shouldn't have gotten the girl, i can pull out 10 different novelas from the 90's that fit that category.
RE LFMB: i was there. in the trenches. circa 2006. in the forums. helping my sister make lety\fernando fanvids. she using pando to download eps from mexico bc univsion was MONTHS behind what was airing in mexico. i was reading forum fanfiction, which is the worst way to read fanfiction. (Conchi from cuba, i think about ur lety\fernando letters once in a blue moon and im sad i never saved them). i was there when they started adding the filler eps fm the world cup in germany and then when they went Cuernavaca (and still didnt have sex). I was there to see them hire juan soler. I was there when they decided to not give her a makeover and just change her clothes but not really. i was there when they had tiziano ferro on as damage control bc he said some comments about women with mustaches. I was there when i realized that Aldo was never gonna go away. I was there when they did that jessica rabbit thing. I was there when they turned lety and fernando's wedding into a parade\concert special for all of mexico city. I was there for the rise and fall of it all.
I. was. there.
Aldo and his never going away was the worst thing to happen to LFMB bc it ruined Lety for the reasons u mentioned above. They dragged the story out and as a consequence of that they didnt know what to do. Lety and Tomas are economists--logically they never would have gone over the budget.
When Aldo said he would get conceptos out of debt for Lety....the forum went crazy bc now Lety would feel in debt to HIM. It doesn't free her. It was INSANELY manipulative. It was also insane to put him in a relationship with Lety, on top of that. It's similar to how in YSBLF, Armando feels in debt to Marcela and that's part of why he feels forced into giving the relationship another go.
Yeah, making it longer only served Fernando bc everyone felt bad for him bc he was openly pining for Lety and Lety looked like the bad guy bc she was with Aldo, on top of making really dumb jessica rabbit like decisions.
Ocampo and Televisa, for ratings and money hungry reasons, ruined Lety and took away a lot of her agency by making her so indecisive.
LFMB is not that bad, it's fairly good until a point. Lety and Fernando manage to come off as original despite being a mexican version of Betty and Armando. They're cute together. There's tenderness brought about bc they're both kind of immature. (Betty and Armando are the Original Sexy Couple, like that needs to be said and stated. Lety and Fernando aren't Sexy bc they come off as sad nerds who both have been deprived of love )
As I was saying, it's not the worst version. and it could have been so much better had they just followed the original storyline. You can tell they decided to deviate once Lety was in Acapulco, right when they start delaying her healing process and makeover.
I have mixed feelings about Michel (but that's another post) but I'll never dislike or feel the hate i feel for Aldo\Juan Soler, who we called 'Fishface' in our house and now whenever there's a love triangle with ugly guy, we call them 'Fishface'. A meme here for all the wrong reasons.

Waco Ch D R1: Alexis Galarneau/Aleksandar Kovacevic def. Alex Bolt/Rinky Hijikata [3] 5-7, 6-4, [10-7] Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
It indeed boiled down to the pressure points. Sometimes, the serves were not serving. In another occasion, the return game played the integral part. Making a mistake could be costly, and that exactly what this match did not allow one to.
It appeared that Galarneau/A. Kovacevic regained their service game right after they pressured A. Bolt/Hijikata on return, prompting the latter to double fault at the deciding point. The latter pair risked lots from their serves for 5 double faults to Galarneau/Kovacevic's 1, while they made 5 aces instead of Galarneau/Kovacevic's 4. Coming in a clutch did not mean one would always ace, but the serves accuracy also came from how they followed up the rally after serving. As a result, Galarneau/A. Kovacevic won 3% more of their points from their first serves, while A. Bolt/Hijikata's second serves remained the most vulnerable with just winning 58% of their points from the second serves.
Somehow, both pairs equally converted 25% of their opportunities to break; and interestingly, both had 8 opportunities to break. Being clutch while facing these break points on serve was one, but creating those opportunities and following them up was another. This was how Galarneau/A. Kovacevic winged it better on the return, especially knowing how they finished their pressure points with a winner, or they accurately targeted A. Bolt's shots (who happened to likely be the weaker side), hence they pulled it through from the trenches. This turned out to be an out-pressuring contest in the match tie-breaker, in which Kovacevic/A. Galarneau handled it better, thanks to their better shot selection.
In the quarterfinals, Galarneau/A. Kovacevic will face the winner between Ulises Blanch/Juan Pablo Ficovich or Gabriel Decamps/Alexandre Muller, which match tie-break is still ongoing as this was written. This brings a likelihood of another close match, but sounds exciting to find out what is next!

4/11/1963 Puerto Rico Trench
Among the most convincing eyewitness reports of strange surface and subsurface goings-on are those reported by experienced pilots whose vantage point thousands of feet overhead has the unquestionable advantage of taking in the entire phenomenon at a glance. One such sighting occurred on April 11th, 1963, from the cabin of a Boeing 707 on a routine passenger flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico to New York City. The sighting was over one of the Atlantic's deepest canyons, the Puerto Rico Trench, north of Puerto Rico and east of the Dominican Republic. Here the sea reaches a depth of five and a half miles. The coordinates recorded by the crew were 19 54' north latitude, 66 47' west longitude. The copilot was the first to see the underwater disturbance. It was 1:30 p.m., about 20 minutes after takeoff, when the jet was at its cruising altitude of 31,000 feet. The copilot saw, approximately five miles to the right, a portion of the ocean's surface rising in what appeared to be a great round mound. He described it as "a big cauliflower" in the water, like an undersea atomic explosion that was about to burst through the surface. But nothing broke the surface. He called the captain's and engineer's attention to it, and they observed it for about half a minute under the clear sky. Both men unfastened their seat belts to move over to the right side for an unobstructed view. The three crewmen agreed the great mount of water was between half a mile and a mile in diameter and had risen from the surrounding ocean level to at least half its width. The captain, adhering to the policy of maintaining the flight schedule, did not circle back for another look. As they left the area of the great boiling mound of water, they noticed it was beginning to subside. Later, the copilot made inquiries at several government agencies, as well as with a seismic specialist, but none had reports of tidal waves, earthquakes, or waterspouts in that area.

This also allows you to bookmark our site to use when you are not connected to the Internet. This method may be less accurate when you need the exact elevation for your location, but has the advantage of giving you real-time altitude updates as you move. When you use the site on a mobile device with a built-in altimeter, your elevation is determined by your phone’s built-in altitude reading by default (this will show up as “according to your phone”). Simply enter an address anywhere in the world and you will be given its elevation in either feet or meters. Using this site you can determine elevation for any location in the world, whether you are there or not. Because each of the satellites is in a different place, the three signals can be used to estimate a three dimensional position and can determine your position on the Earth to an extremely high degree of accuracy. The time it takes for each of the satellite signals to reach the receiver are measured in relation to each other and to the speed of light. Your phone acts as a receiver for satellite data. This satellite technology is also used to determine your precise location and help you navigate in apps like Google Maps. How does this site determine your precise elevation? The site receives GPS data from your phone. Using this website you can find out your elevation no matter where you are. The lowest point is the Badwater Basin, 281ft below sea level. The lowest point on earth is the Mariana Trench in the Western Pacific, which is approximately 35,000 feet below sea level, which is close to seven miles deep! The location with the highest elevation in the United States is Denali in Alaska. Everest, which is about 29,000 feet above sea level. For example, the highest point on earth is Mt. The planet earth is extremely large and has radically diverse elevations. This is also referred to as “height above mean sea level”. The geoid is purely hypothetical though, but it is used as a reference for land surveyors to determine elevation based on what the sea-level would have been for a given point on Earth without land. It is the shape that the Earth’s surface would take if it were all one big ocean without winds or tides. If we were to hypothetically subtract winds, tides and other external forces that alter bodies of water we would be left with something known as the geoid. These irregularities and variations in the earth’s surface determine the acceleration of gravity, which vicariously creates the shape of the earth’s liquids. But the reality is that the surface of the earth is rather corrugated, rugged and irregular. When we look at representations of the earth we typically see a perfectly circular sphere. You can then use GPS to fetch the value elevation reading in the DEM. Satellite data from NASA and other public agencies can be combined to create what is called a DEM or Digital Elevation Model which is a detailed list of elevation values for points on the Earth’s surface. In areas with poor GPS reception an altimeter can be more accurate than GPS-based elevation readings and do not require an Internet connection. Modern smartphones contain a barometer that can be used as an altimeter to measure elevation or to calculate the number of steps you have climbed. The bellows then give you an accurate reading of your height above sea level regardless of whether you are on the ground, in a tree, or in an airplane. As you travel upwards, the pressure decreases which causes the bellows inside the barometer to expand. Inside of an altimeter is a barometer which is a device that measures pressure in the air. Altitude is measured with an altimeter by calculating differences in atmospheric pressure. How is elevation calculated? Using an AltimeterĪn altimeter is an instrument used to measure altitude. While elevation is often the preferred term for the height of your current location, altitude and height above sea level are also common. Altitude is a measurement of an object’s height, often referring to your height above the ground (such as in an airplane or a satellite). Elevation typically refers to the height of a point on the earth’s surface, and not in the air. What is elevation?Įlevation is a measurement of height above sea level. From a computer your elevation is loaded from our API based on your location. It will even work when your phone is offline.

When viewed from a phone that supports altitude readings, the reading will come directly from your device altitude reading and will update automatically as you move. This site was designed to help you find the height above sea level of your current location, or any point on Earth.
