Jute Gyte - Ship of Theseus
Holy fucking SHIIIIIT. Jute Gyte has to be one of if not my favorite solo-black metal project, black metal, project, fucking whatever cool experimental stuff he does I love. The main thing that Adam Kalmbach's project Jute Gyte is known for is its use of Microtonal Music. If you don't know, western music is generally split (super simplifying here) into half tones. So you have A and then A Sharp and then B, C, then C sharp, D, D sharp. So it progresses in these half steps. In Middle eastern Music and south asian music, and many other cultures outside of the western school of music theory. There are many many more. So there could be a note between d sharp and E that is just like D sharp sharp, or maybe D.78 or D.92 depending on how specific. Essentially Jute Gyte is playing notes, chords, and scales that do not exist within western music canon. If you've never listened to music outside of that space (which includes everything from Justin Bieber to Darkthrone to WuTang to Mozart to Elvis to Miles Davis to Taylor Swift) then this is going to sound insane to you. Even out of tune, it isn't. This is just that cool ass experimental music. This whole album, once you get into the sound he's going for, is such a slow and particular burn filled with incredibly dense riffs and noise orchestration. The guitars prick and and pop almost sounding like metallic crashes or high pitched banging to fit in with the noisey sampling and electronic soundscape. They float between almost recognizable sounds by incorporating notes that aren't within the western canon but are a similar space apart between familiar chords / scales (for instance playing in D.75 Major scale). This playing with familiarity makes everything feel uncanny and uneasy, yet still beautiful. Each song has it's low quieter moments that build into epic, high intensity climaxes that are so dense and well constructed that even after a few listens there will still be details, notes and references. An absolute fucking experience. Jute Gyte is one of the best to be making music right now.

I refreshed the Spiritual pop and Secular drones playlists on the Blue Tapes Soundcloud that act as a sort of primer to the different hemispheres of the label.
Spiritual pop encapsulates the lighter, more playful side of our work, with contributions from Katie Gately, Tashi Dorji, Henry Plotnick, The Library of Babel, Stuart Chalmers and Taming Power, Hey String, Richard Youngs, Bulbils, Ashtray Navigations and Dane Law.
Secular drones summarises the darker, noisier end of things: Threes and Will, Father Murphy, Jute Gyte, Trupa Trupa, Unfollow, Mats Gustafsson, Ratkiller, Cadu Tenorio and Gultskra Artikler. Click the links in the first para to explore!

Jute Gyte - Unus Mundus Patet
New album from Avant Garde legend Jute Gyte and boy does it fuck so hard. It starts off in such a noisey note with these songs filled with microtonal riffs of harsh tremolo picking, waves of screeching noise, and these firey tenor screaming vocals of anguish. This intensity slowly fades away leading to a more atmospheric or dark ambient experience in the second half where the harsh noise is replaced with rolling waves of static and much of the tremolo picking replaced with long synth waves that waver and grow, wriggling into your ear like a brain parasite. Amazing listen from an amazing artist.

x-ray five: Jute Gyte - The Sparrow
One of the big ones. One-man black-metal band Jute Gyte's contribution to the Blue Tapes canon is less a BM record and more a wormhole opening to a universe where the very physics of music as we understand it operate fundamentally differently.
Billed at the time as an EP, there is an album's length of music across the two tracks - The Sparrow, presented as one-side of a single-sided, screenprinted LP; and Monadanom, available as an accompanying download.
The title-track is a searing piece of microtonal metal influenced by Gloria Coates as much as any badger-faced church-burner.
Monadanom is an even deeper, weirder proposition - an unheimlich instrumental that sounds like little else.
One of the most unique looking of our x-ray vinyl series, the single-sided LP looks like a strange eye where they lids are moths?!
Stark, minimal - offering few clues.
Still got copies of this one at the link above.

Jute Gyte - Krun Macula (full album, 2023)
Tumblr media
youtube
So, when you have a band known for their unique take on black metal like Jute Gyte are, with their legendary microtonal progressive output, why would you choose their  rare ambient release to feature? Well, why not, after all their black metal releases are already acknowledged as genre classics, plus, it's named after an equatorial dark spot on Pluto who in turn is named after a Mandaean lord of the underworld and, well, we are huge nerds.
So, 'Krun Macula' is eerie. It could be said to be somewhat calming, but the undercurrent is there. It's minimal, but somehow tunes on the  uncanny valley, but on a grand, impersonal scale. Like watching an endless march of people through a post apocalyptic wasteland while angels supervise them smiling, but the people can tell the smiles are fake, creepy, Stepford-like rictuses intended to calm them but that the angels are really alien and unfeeling, while the silence is not silence but to quote Harlan Ellisson,  the sound of one hand clapping.
Sorry, is this getting too weird? Yeah well, this is Jute Gyte, if anyone can create a liminal zone with the bare minimum of sound, it's them.
