Whilst the fandom notion of Kaito being very touchy and/or physically affectionate with Yagami is cute (and something I will probably also continue to indulge in), it also doesn't suuuuper realistically align with their canon relationship. If anything, their canon dynamic is incredibly underrated.

What really intrigues me about the two is how much they stubbornly build a respectful distance between each other. Despite knowing Kaito for over a decade, Yagami still politely hasn't dropped the honorific when referring to Kaito, nor has he ever used his first name. He still refers to him as though he is a colleague and not like his best friend.

Despite working with each other for two years prior, neither Kaito nor Yagami called each other partners. Not until they were thrust into a situation that forced them to confront that they might have any semblence of closeness outside of just colleagues or an employer/employee.

Consider the infamous 'wanna get cheesy' scene too. I think it perfectly summarises how they're both a bit reluctant to be 'cheesy' or even acknowledge any closeness they might have (much less convey that through physical affection). They continue to maintain that polite distance even when the opportunity to be more physical arises.

That being said, such a dynamic can probably lead to some really sweet and emotionally-charged opportunities! Like, image two touch-starved individuals, who have spent all these years trying to maintain a level of distance between one another, finally breaking after a particularly stressful scenario and embracing one another. All those years of build up for just one moment where the walls come down. That's a Kaito/Yagami scenario that would really scratch my itch.
