so we went to worlds! i never make posts but i needed to talk about this. i might make a post about the rest of the event somewhere else but i NEED to vent about the thing that pissed me off the most of the whole event - which wasn't even anything to do with the skating!
i've seen a million people talking about how amazing the crowd was and like. i don't know where they were or what their experiences were but mine was largely miserable.
i was in a fantastic seat (even tho it was not the seat we originally bought) but the section was full of, largely, the worst people i've ever had the misfortune to share an audience with. people distracting skaters, talking to them on the ice, disrespecting other people's spaces, talking loudly about irrelevant things during programs, WALKING BACK TO THEIR SEAT DURING A PROGRAM, saying blatantly racist shit about asian skaters, kicking people out of their seats during a program, calling security on people for seat hopping (without even trying to talk to the person first), threatening security for someone taking pictures... you name it, we had to deal with it.
like i generally avoid most fs fan spaces because people online are annoying as hell and i'm picky with who i follow/check for news. but the real life crowd? is so much fucking worse. it was just disheartening to feel like no one really respected the skaters on the ice.
i don't really have a point with this, but like... it was just so frustrating and such a bummer on the whole experience to have to put up with people who i felt weren't there to enjoy or support skating, but instead to be entitled pricks or catty assholes that made the vibes horrendous
due to the slow death of twitter i'm collecting my program links here. (almost) none of the rubicon skates are meant to be identical to real life programs, but some of the inspiration is pretty one-to-one… and some is a little less direct.
if you find yourself region blocked, try a free vpn - i recommend the veepn browser extension (firefox | chrome) or proton.
if you only have so much time, i've starred the most important ones. if you want more… i have so many more.
How would you rank these American women in terms of skating skills and anyone else in the group that I’m accidentally forgetting? (Madi H, Madi C, Maia S, Meryl, Tanith, Kaitlyn H)
It seems to me that technically, the biggest differentiators among the elite teams are the step sequences (and formerly the pattern dance). Do you think that Chock/Bates and Green/Parsons are significantly better than CPom and the teams below them? I do think Hawayek/Baker are the class of the field on step sequences, but with them not being there, do you think the other teams can/will be judged accurately? And if they were, what should their relative placements be? Does it even matter if the judges can use GOE/PCS to determine outcomes anyway?
On a similar note, both Scott Moir and Kaitlyn Weaver have said that the reason the pattern was removed is because it wasn’t being judged fairly and transparently. Do you think the partial step sequence or one foot or any other step sequence has a better chance of being scored correctly in ice dance? Or is the same lack of integrity just going to be pushed into other areas of judging.
these are all really intriguing questions, and things i want to learn more about - i don't know that anyone thinks Chock/Bates's best elements are patterns and step sequences - their strengths are more like lifts and performance elements. i can only speak to one competition, but their skates made this wispy sound like they're on the surface of the ice unlike Hawayek/Baker, especially Jean-Luc, where you can hear his blades making deeper and continuous contact in the ice. Madi mentioned she loved the feel of pushing into the ice when she skates, and from what i understand, that's where you get your power and speed in the best way, so i imagine the teams with the best skating skills have better and not shallow contact with the ice
as to judging- i don't see how if the pattern isn't judged fairly the partial step or any other step sequences would be more so - i'd love to hear more from people like Scott and Kaitlyn how that works. i haven't been watching closely enough for long enough to feel like i understand how the politics factor in, though even as a bystander, seeing who's present at competitions and who's talking to who, the fs world is so small and feds and judges are entwined
Loved Kait and Jean-luc a lot??? It was coherent, well choreographed and very musical and just a lot of fun. Ofc early season made it slightly messy, but I feel like this program will evolve throughout the season. Another thing that was interesting was how seriously it was taken, it wasn't cheesy disco or taking the micky out of anything, it was just a cool program meant for dancing and having a good time.
“The only American ice dance team that has anything interesting to say on the ice is Hubbell/Donahue. The rest are either still working stuff out (H/B); too young/new (P/B); or just bland and doing the same thing for years now (Shibs, C/B). Not even the Shibs' silver or bronze medal performances were at all interesting. Here's to hoping the Olympic year inspires them all.”
Kaitlin Hawayek: A wonderful weekend celebrating these two wonderful people. Mitchum and Al… I feel so grateful you both came into my life when we all found our ways to Michigan almost a decade ago. Thanks for always being wonderful friends, and for always being good sports to snap a Mitch face photo when the moment is right (which is always). Love you both longtime 🤍👰🏼♀️🤵🏻
