so the telepathy club is based on the Momotaro folktale

@kikaiz made a post about it here (thats how I knew) but I'm bringing it up again because the cleanup arc is based on red oni/blue oni folktale and its easier to explain both linked together

to keep it short, an old peasant couple had a rice field. One day they find a peach, find a baby boy inside and raise him as their son. when he turns 15 he decides to leave to fight onis. His mom packs rice cakes for him(millet dango in other versions). on his way he meets a dog, a monkey and a pheasant , he tells them of his plan to fight oni and they decide to come with him. He gives each of them rice cake and then they battle the oni and win.

there’s also a version of the tale where Momotaro lazes around and does nothing, which is what the telepathy club mostly does

Takenaka (momo)zou: peach

(Kiji)bayashi: pheasant

(Saru)(ta): monkey, rice field

(Inu)kawa (Mame)ta: dog, beans (ref to bean throwing festival, explained later) also has a dog (mentioned in omakes)

Kura(ta); rice field/ possibly related to her starting the club getting everyone together and getting to use the club budget to buy snacks

(I'll add their theme related outfits in a reblog because maybe the anime will add more details like they did with [redacted] but for now note that takenaka's hood looks like peach and inukawa's outfit had bones)

Now oni/demon references:

-demon reference on telepathy club's snacks

- inukawa scaring off oni-looking monsters when he was on the other planet

- more importantly, Tokagawa did have an oni-like design in a manga panel (telepathy club’s pov) (also in the semi canon anthology). He and by extension student council is considered the club’s main enemy by trying to disband it.

now there’s another character with oni references: (Oni)gawara Tenga and his signature move "demon rush", but he's not a threat to the telepathy club. It’s interesting because we get introduced to him early on. So for those who notice the references in the names then might’ve guessed that 'Mob will join the telepathy club then there will be an arc going against delinquents' and then there's the plotwist of him joining the body improvement club.

Also note that a) Takenaka wasn't introduced yet. and b) the bi club was the club that ‘defeated the oni’/ was a positive influence on Onigawara

So here's the actual deal with Onigawara. The clean up arc is based on red oni blue oni story, with Onigawara implied to be blue oni because of his blue hair colour and the student council as red oni because of their red armbands.

the story:

”a red Oni tries to become friends with humans. However, Oni are known for being scary, so everyone stayed away. Eventually, he asks his friend the blue oni for help on what he should do to let the humans know he was their friend.

The blue Oni comes up with a plan: he'd pretend to be an evil oni and attack the human village, and the red oni could heroically come in and save the humans by chasing him off.

They enact this plan, and the red oni befriends the humans like he wanted. However, he soon realizes that his friend the blue oni hasn't come around, so he goes to the blue oni's house to see if something happened. He finds a letter from the blue oni, who writes that he will stay away from the humans so that the red oni can still be friends with them (as the humans would recognize him as the "evil" oni that attacked). The story ends with the red oni crying for having lost his old friend.” (quoted from myths and folklore wiki)

there are parallels of red oni as student council and deliquents as blue oni: red oni / student council going with a plan to paint blue oni/ delinquents as evil that they're heroically chasing off to increase their popularity/ authority in school.

Edit: - since the cleanup plan was for getting rid of delinquents, Kamuro talks about catching the shadow leader/urabanchou (its mob but kamuro doesn't know that). He imagines him as an oni.

Bonus: bones made a poster celebrating setsubun/risshun aka bean throwing festival, not sure if its relevant but Ritsu has blue oni mask and Reigen has red oni mask
