I know I kind of went off prompt with this, but seriously thank you to everyone who helped me brainstorm. I guess this interpretation of the prompt is to think on how a component of civilization is culture, and by that extension their people, communities, family… the concept is probably too much for one piece to explore but here’s my go— again thank you to everyone who helped me brainstorm!!

Ac3 Prompt

Everyone helplessly pining after Connor and he can’t understand why people act so strangely around him. Not obligatory but situations I imagine are:

1. Connor being completely oblivious to someone trying to bed him

2. Haytham being upset whenever someone hits on Connor (not out of protectiveness, really, honestly, shut up)

3. Lee being annoyed by everyone talking about how good Connor looks. That is until he finds out that Washington is also pining, and he figures out a way to use that against the general.

4. Hickey making snide comments about Connor, usually when the elder Kenway isn’t within earshot. Hopefully.

5. Connor is confused why people go out of their way to help and befriend him. At first he assumes it’s just politeness, but it starts to get ridiculous.

6. Connor is concerned that people always start staring and whispering whenever he enters a room. He is also confused why women try to keep him away from other women. Is he making them so uncomfortable that people have to stop him from talking to others?

7. Haytham feeling a small amount of pride and smugness for making a good-looking child.

After Norris’ last mission, you can find him down in the mine and have a conversation with him! The mine’s gotten bigger, and goes deeper into the earth, and you have access to more ores and products from him. This conversation surprised me, and in a good way. 

Ratonhnhake:ton: Norris! How is the mine? Is there anything worth your time down there?  Norris: Most definitely. Copper, Connor. And a healthy amount of it.  Ratonhnhake:ton: Excellent. I am glad. I have been meaning to ask, is Norris a common French name?  Norris (slight grimace): My real name is not Norris. It’s Maurice.  Ratonhnhake:ton: But you told me... Norris: I did. When I arrived in Boston people started calling me Norris and I got tired of correcting them all the time. Just before we met I had been talking with that lady at the pub, she said she liked my name ‘Norris’. I decided to stick with it.  Ratonhnhake:ton: Would you prefer I called you by your real name?  Norris: Nah. Everybody here knows me as Norris, Myriam included. Names can change but people stay the same, isn’t that right, Connor? Ratonhnhake:ton (blink of surprise): Very true. 

It’s worth noting that Norris speaks with a very heavy French accent, and I almost didn’t hear the difference between “Norris” and “Maurice” at first, due to how he says them both. I wasn’t expecting this conversation at all, given how the game has treated the subject of Ratonhnhake:ton’s name before, and generally brushed it aside. This is kind of the first time we’ve heard Ratonhnhake:ton even mention being okay with the name “Connor”, in a round about way. We’ve heard him introduce himself as Connor before, but I was always curious as to how he thought about that -- was it uncomfortable, did he resent it, does he think of himself as Connor or as Ratonhnhake:ton? Both? 

It interests me that Norris is so far the only one to bring it up, too -- Terry and Godfrey know that Ratonhnhake:ton is Iroquois at the very least, so they likely have an idea that his birth name isn’t “Connor”. Warren, Prudence, and Myriam also have heard snippets about his faith and how he views the world, which are very distinctly not Christian. There’s also that Kanen’to:kon calls him Ratonhnhake:ton still, and I’m fairly convinced that Kanen’to:kon comes by the Homestead every now and again. 

I guess what I’m getting at is just... Are they, the homesteaders choosing not to pry into his reasons out of respect? That’s the vibe I get with it, at least. Ratonhnhake:ton gave them a home, a village, a community, a place to build their lives, so it’s possible that they don’t want to pry into something that might be painful. He’s Connor to them, a good friend and a young man who’s made their homes possible.

Altaïr: Knows exactly how to incapacitate anyone at anytime based on first glance and knows how to escape every room as fast and efficiently as possible. He’s just like that I guess but he’s also a nerd who doodles and writes poetry so that evens it out

Malik: Man does self care days and takes them *very* seriously. Face masks, cucumbers, everything. Don’t disturb him in that state if you value your life.

Thomas Hickey (during his prime around the late 80’s): so stupid, not much changed from the game. He loves the Toy Dolls and would probably love smash mouth

Kanen’tó:kon: Best buddies with Connor through and through, contacts him pretty much every day once he moves out to college, makes great sandwiches

William Johnson (current time): One of Connor’s professors unfortunately. It’s,,, oof. Hickey freeloads at his place a lot in modern day

Leonardo: Rarely sleeps in his own bed since he’s around his room and dorm working on stuff all the time at different ‘stations’ he set up. He’s got little makeshift sleeping dens under his desks. How does he even operate during the day like what

Connor: Altaïr’s roommate, resident straight-man along with Malik. Jacob and Ezio definitely jumped into his arms Scooby-Doo style and Connor is begrudgingly prepared for it.

Vieri: basically Ercole from Luca. Only exists in Italy but he keeps finding ways to contact Ezio to be a nuisance even while he’s overseas.

I’ll admit, I’ve seen this in a couple gifsets before. If you like, you can watch it here, there’s some nice physicality in this scene that stills don’t quite get across. 

After asking who’s responsible, Achilles cautions Ratonhnhake:ton that this is going to be difficult -- and he’s right. This is the start of a proper Assassin mission, the same way that Altair and Ezio went after their targets. I was actually rather giddy when I got to this scene, cause now we’re actually an Assassin going after some targets, not just building power and training. 

As Achilles is telling him to seek out Sam in Boston, Ratonhnhake:ton holds out his hand for Kanen’to:kon’s hatchet, who hands it over instantly. He buries it in the post of the Manor, and effectively declares war on the Templars at the ripe old age of 18. I wonder at the significance of it being Kanen’to:kon’s hatchet -- is it significant at all, since he was the one to ask Ratonhnhake:ton to go to war? Or is it simply that any hatchet will do? Does Kanen’to:kon have any other weapons he can use, now that his hatchet is buried in the post? So many questions. 

I’m just gonna pat Achilles’ head though. His poor house. Don’t you know, there’s war to be on, can’t be worrying about a thing like that. 

Ratonhnhake:ton and Kanen’to:kon head out, presumably to Boston, and I’m wondering if he’ll be our companion through the mission? I kinda hope so, I’d like to see more of him.

I went downstairs before I left to go check the conspiracy board, having noticed some new writing in the opening cutscene. The new writing is in white, though it’s a little hard to see --

Next to Nicholas Biddle: “positioning for Admiral?” Next to William Johnson: “Buying land. WHY?? slave trade?” Next to Charles and Haytham, with an arrow pointing between them: “started Boston massacre WHY?”

I suspect we’ll see more updates, so I’ll keep an eye on it. 

The next is the database entry on Kanen’to:kon, which made me giggle. I really like the touch that these two are basically as close as brothers, with the knowledge that Ratonhnhake:ton always got into trouble. It’s good, I like it~

Turns out we didn’t have to wait long at all. The cutscene with Ratonhnhake:ton and Achilles fades into this one, with the timecard proclaiming “six months later”. I swear to god, I’m going to kill those time cards. They’re shoddy and inaccurate, half the time. Oh god, I’m turning into Shaun. Like, again, I understand wanting to have a narrative sort of thread, but it just feels awkward to me. 

Anyways, Kanen’to:kon bursts into the house, frantically calling for Ratonhnhake:ton, saying that William has returned with all the money he needs. Ratonhnhake:ton protests, saying that they destroyed all the tea, where could’ve he gotten the money from? And Achilles comes out with the biggest “I told you so” ever. Honestly he’s kind of right to, given everything’s in danger once again because of Ratonhnhake:ton’s inaction. 

I legit love that the camera shows Ratonhnhake:ton wincing to Achilles’ callout, given how defensive he was before. It’s a nice touch, and it’s good that we can see it, while also being turned away from Achilles himself. 

Kanen’to:kon quietly begs him to do something, and the two head off once again, with Ratonhnhake:ton resolving to make it right, this time by killing William.
