Power outage in Abuja due to 33kv feeder repairs – AEDC

The Management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc, AEDC, on Thursday, said the power outage experienced in parts of the capital city was due to the repairs on the 33kv NIPP feeder. AEDC made this known in a statement via its official Twitter handle on Thursday. It listed the affected locations as: Dantata Estate, FO1, Chikakore, Byazhin, Byazhin Across, Gbazango and Military Pension Board. “Similarly, customers located at FCDA, Owner Occupier, Army Estate. Phase 3, Phase 4, 2.1, 22, Extension 2, Aso Garden Estate, Zenith Bank area, Dutse, Papas Ground, Karsana, Mona Apartment and its environs that the power the power outage is due to a fault on the 33kV Kubwa circuit breaker. “We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused by these power outages, please be assured that all the relevant stakeholders are working relentlessly to ensure power supply is restored soonest. “Thank you for your understanding and patience during this time,” it said. Was Queen Devasena a warrior goddess come to earth?

A small flame burns in the alter. The priestess, a 29-year-old ascetic, pours a few drops of ash and coconut oil into it. Outside the sanctum sanctorum, three women-- one barely in her late teens, the others well past their prime-- wait to be called in. They carry no offerings. And their clothing is plain. But around their waist, they all wear daggers. However, nothing about them is even remotely violent. They are here only for a glimpse of their goddess-- their one refuge and source of comfort in these difficult times.

Goddess Raktaraina is considered a minor village deity by some, but a form of the Adi Shakti by others. Her worship is almost dead in India, where her oldest and only surviving temple was built in the late 4th century BCE. Less than a thousand people visit the temple every year. But she remains important among diaspora communities (especially in the Caribbean) looking to connect with their indigenous roots in India.

Sekilah Sarita, a scholar of world history, is an ardent devotee of this ancient warrior goddess.

"Raktaraina literally means blood-soaked night," she says. "She was a goddess that women prayed to for strength, especially against the cruel ways of men. She is hardly a living deity now but her images remain popular. From being represented as an angry dancer to the controller of fire, she is seen as an icon to reclaim by many millennials in the non-Indian Hindu diaspora."

Sarita has a point. Some historians argue that her origin story mentions events that would occur during the many lifetimes of her many avatars. These can be nothing but later additions made in the oral tradition to gain credibility and legitimacy for social reforms. For instance, the story of Kannagi from Manimekhalai is seen as Raktaraina's crusade against the oppression of poor people at the hands of the royalty. Similarly, the legend of the 11th century queen Devasena of Mahishmati (modern day Telangana, Hyderabad, and parts of Andhra Pradesh) is often retold as the goddess' sacrifice to end the curse on the demon Karsana, who could only attain salvation after being burned to cinders by the hands of Raktaraina herself. This retelling of Devasena's story positions Bhallaladeva as a reincarnation of Karsana.

Reluctant as she was to do this, she had to yield before the strict austerities of Karmana, Karsana's benevolent younger brother who could not bear to see his brother go through multiple human lives as an antithesis to all that was good about humanity.

Despite having no great fondness for males and their mistakes, she agreed to come to his aid only on the condition that he too would suffer the fate of living as a human being for a quarter lifetime-- as an offering to her for this unusual blessing that was not really her domain.

This story, like the others, is dismissed in academia.

But despite the scepticism of scholars, devotees remain convinced that their Goddess indeed lived among them at various points in time, whenever she was needed.

She is believed to have had a number of consorts and lovers, without being attached to any one of them in her divinity. Unlike Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Shakti, she does not have a masculine half-- she does not need one. Besides, according to some folklores, she is thought to be sterile or barren or both. Even though 'barren' is seen as one of the worst insults pertaining to a woman's fertility, Raktaraina is fondly invoked as The Barren Goddess... because she has no time for children, nor the desire for conventional motherhood.

As the goddess of war, vengeance, justice, and perhaps even violence, she is sometimes seen as the mother of human nature, the originator and cherisher of human imperfections.

She is said to ride a black panther into battle and her favored night of the month is that of the crescent. On this auspicious night, devotees leave offerings of raw meat for her beloved panthers outside her temple.

Female devotees who wish to gain salvation through her, are expected to rise above their roles as wives and childbearers. They must leave behind their homes, carry arms, remove their head coverings, and spend their time in meditating upon her name-- breaking their penance only to fight for the cause of justice if someone comes to them for help or for protection.

Some people also believe that she is the goddess Indrajit prayed to, in the form of Nikumbhila, before joining the battle against Rama. There is no way to confirm this theory.

However, even though she is no longer a major goddess of the Hindu pantheon, her revival in pop culture and feminist interpretations of religion, mean a lot. The very idea of a fearsome, unapologetic warrior goddess is formidable and alluring in an otherwise male-dominated tapestry of myths and stories.
