Help me, Booklr, you're my only hope!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Updated 5/10/23: I found yet another small stack and added it to the list.
These are all the BOTM books I own. The intent when I signed up for BOTM back in 2020 was to try and read out of my usual comfort zone of Urban Fantasy (and the occasional fantasy book). My success with this challenge has been minimal — I started a couple of these books but ultimately didn't finish them. It wasn't because the books were boring, however. I was enjoying the couple I started, but I just ended up falling out-of-the-mood to read them.
The biggest problem I'm facing is just where to start with this massive (and ever growing) stack. Every single one of these books sounds amazing and interesting to read, but... I don't where to start! So I'm turning to you, members of Booklr, to help me choose which of these books to read next! These are stacked in no particular order, but for anyone that's having difficulty with images loading or can't see the images, here is a list for you:
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo*
Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo
A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross
Outlawed by Anna North
A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight
The Only Survivors by Megan Miranda
The Dating Plan by Sara Desai
Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
Like A Sister by Kellye Garrett
The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson
The Verifiers by Jane Pek
The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James
The Survivors by Jane Harper
Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins
The Bodyguard by Katherine Center
Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn
The Family Game by Catherine Steadman
The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah
The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins
Breathless by Amy McCulloch
Girl, Forgotten by Karin Slaughter
Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney
Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance by Ruth Emmie Lang
The London Séance Society by Sarah Penner
The Wilderwomen by Ruth Emmie Lang
Darling Girl by Liz Michalski
The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz
The Last Word by Taylor Adams
The Last Flight by Julie Clark
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian
*This copy of Ninth House is not a BOTM book, I included it in the stack because it's the first in a series.

hi molly, I saw your tweet earlier about murder books, do you have any recs?
boy do I EVER!!!!!! excuse me for this long answer and thank you for asking for my recs xoxo!!!!
(bolding author and book names in case anyone is looking strictly for recs and doesn't care abt my ramblings lol)
obviously Gillian Flynn is the queen of thrillers and I am constantly chasing the high of reading one of her books. anyone who has not read her books needs to ASAP!!!! Sharp Objects is my favorite
I haven't read that many thrillers aside from her novels because I think she set my standards too high 😵‍💫🥴 so most of the following recs I would consider strictly mystery books and not thrillers
I was raised by Nancy Drew so I am a sucker for a good female-led mystery and I especially love ones that are like, a woman who has a regular job and just happens to stumble upon dead bodies a lot. so....
the Jenny Cain series by Nancy Pickard! Jenny is an absolute icon, I've read all 10 books in the series. some of them are better than others but I think each one is still a good mystery. if you read any of the books in this series let it be Bum Steer
I have been on the hunt for my next Nancy Drew/Jenny Cain, so please note that in the following recs, I have only read one book lol but I do plan on reading all of the books in each of these series
the Crime of Fashion series by Ellen Byerrum - a D.C.-based fashion journalist, which I'm obsessed with, I love a fun theme so the fact that these are all fashion-related (and full of interesting fashion facts) was sooo great
the Mrs. Pollifax series by Dorothy Gilman - okay so this one wasn't a murder book it was more of a spy book (though there was some spy-related murdering) and I don’t actually know if any of the other books have like a murder premise, regardless who doesn't love an elderly woman who becomes a spy
the Lilly Hawkins series by Nora McFarland - protagonist was kinda unlikable and not in the fun way and there are only 3 books in this series BUT the plot of this was sooo intriguing and I love that the entire plot happened in the span of like 24 hours
the Detective by Day series by Kellye Garrett - there are only TWO books in this series which makes me sooo sad because the first book was truly a flawless mystery to me
okay last rec I promise! 😋 the Truly Devious series by Maureen Johnson is sooo fantastic, and that's coming from a person who typically dislikes YA mysteries! the first three books are a trilogy and I devoured them and the stand-alone after that was simply amazing and there's another stand-alone coming this year!!!!! I'm v excited to watch this series grow
there are all of my recs!! and pls give me any recs you have I love book recs!!!!!

by: Kellye Garrett Published: Mar 8, 2022 Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Fiction 336 Pages, Paperback
★★★★
GoodReads Synopsis:
When the body of disgraced reality TV star Desiree Pierce is found on a playground in the Bronx the morning after her 25th birthday party, the police and the media are quick to declare her death an overdose. It’s a tragedy, certainly, but not a crime.
But Desiree’s half-sister Lena Scott knows that can’t be the case. A graduate student at Columbia, Lena has spent the past decade forging her own path far from the spotlight, but some facts about Desiree just couldn’t have changed since their childhood. And Desiree would never travel above 125th Street. So why is no one listening to her?
My Review:
Very slow to the draw. 90% of the story is played out very slowly and doesn't pick up until the last chapter. While I didn't expect it to be fast-paced all the way through, most of it was very lackluster. Let me back up.
Instagram model/influencer, Desiree Pierce is found dead of a drug overdose but her sister, Lena immediately suspects foul play.
I've said it before in other reviews, cops in these stories are so useless and it infuriates me that they are always written this way. Case in point: see The Perfect Marriage. Detective Green and Detective Zizza were imbeciles.
Over the course of about 10 days, Lena is turning over every leaf and following every lead, to figure out what happened to her sister -- something that should be the NYPD's job. Of course, she is met with many roadblocks; her father is unhelpful and almost comes off as a suspect, there is an old family friend who is mixed up in Desiree's life, a new "best friend" who isn't who she says she is, and a pesky reporter who flirts with Lena at all the wrong times.
There are enough characters in this story to keep you guessing. However, the final climax left much to be desired for me -- it was very anticlimactic.
Aunt E was the scene stealer! I'd love to read a story about her and Gram.
Final thoughts, it was an easy read and despite my best efforts, I was unable to predict the ending for that alone, it gets an extra star! I'm usually pretty good at pegging the "suspect" early.
One-Word Summary: Shitnuts
