the colorgrading in Salaar

the coloring of salaar is very high contrast, and leans heavily towards warmer tones

and even though this may not be visually pleasing to some who don't prefer these specific aesthetics, it is very necessary, in order to frame this universe to seem as oppressive and grim as it is meant to look.

this universe (and also kgf) are universes where every single moment, whether centering around a relationship, or part of the backstory, is blanketed by the theme of sheer violence and loss.

movies with a dark storyline and vibrant colors (for example, baahubali, or rrr) can afford to be colored like that, because we're MEANT to enjoy the lighter aspects of the universe as well. the audience has to experience even the softer emotions and any festivity happening within the universe.

the effects used in salaar are required to immerse the audience in that kind of dark, saturated environment:

so the audience doesn't forget – especially in scenes with the absence of any onscreen violence – the grit of this place and the people within it.

the severity of the violence depicted and the magnitude of the world building doesn't matter – if the audience isn't able to effortlessly accept that this is a fantasy, dystopian setting.

it should also be noted that the movie has no moments where we're forced to sit through that classic mistake some movies make: the 'night blindness' coloring. where, in the interest of depicting a physically/metaphorically dark place, the audience's visibility of the scene is restricted the subtle lighting of these dark scenes has been handled well:

additionally, prashanth and the actors have also specified, that the whole universe and all motives within it, rely partly, if not completely on violence – especially deva's character, whose violence is something that's an integral part of him, so his scenes in particular are very warm, tone-wise

but i do think the movie overall has been balanced well to prevent them from having a strictly monotonous look (something that guntur kaaram received criticism for):

the main purpose of the film's artistic choices with coloring and contrast is to subconsciously drag the audience's perspective out of reality & into the darkness of it's make-believe world, and it does achieve that

even though consciously, it may not align with people's aesthetic preferences.

This scene really threw me off. After the whole fiasco of killing garudha and claiming kgf to himself, Rocky was who he was again. The feared mawaali of Bombay, drunk and sarcastic most of the times. He just had an empire under him now, nothing much. In many movies and fictions I've seen the sudden 180 degree of demeanor once they come in power but he lived like a king his whole life and continued to do so. What surprised me about this scene was that the women weren't scared of him and called him bhaiya. Cared for his wellbeing when they said Reena will shoot him too. Then I realised- he fought for them before he set his mind to take over kgf.

Rocky Bhai From KGF-  Breaking the Stereotype of Momma’s Boy

Krishna Rajappa Bairya a.k.a Don Rockybhai is the protagonist of KGF franchise. He is one of the most famous grey characters in Indian Cinema. His character personality actually lingers between antihero and antivillain.

He is portrayed as a gangster (no he is literally Monster) who had a tragic past. For others, his passion to take over the World and dream to live as a Emperor, seems quite an outcome of his greed.

"Greed is progress..." quoted by Rocky.

He belonged to a small village in Karnataka. He was raised by his single mother, Shantiamma. His father was a drunkard who made his mom's life hell and never gave her any joy and left her pregnant with Rocky. From childhood, Rocky was very close to his mom. He wanted to do everything that pleased his mom. His mom worked hard and never made her son toil in fields and instead sent him school. Her only goal was to make her son capable of being a very rich and influential man. She was so ambitious about her dreams that one night when baby Rocky was suffering from fever and the doctor said that if he is not taken to city hospital he might die (the doctor diagnoses pneumonia); she said that even if her baby dies, she will believe that her kid wasn't capable of fulfilling her dream. According to her, she had endured so much for her son, that neither the doctor nor God has any right to decide his death day. However, when Rocky is now a school going boy, his mom falls ill and eventually nears her death. She asks a promise from little Rocky on her deathbed that he'll be the richest man in the world when he dies. (Because she dies miserably due to poverty)

"Mother, I'll fetch all the gold in world for you." ~Rocky (KGF chapter 2)

He does all good and wrong deeds to fulfill his promise.

Normally, a Momma's boy is always potrayed as a grownup man tied to his mother's apron. He doesn't do anything but rely on Momma for everything. The Good Boy and The Good Son is also the stereotype attached with the Momma's boy.

Rocky can be a Momma's dear boy and a badass monster both.
