SPRING 2017 COLLECTION—“IT’S OUR FIFTH BIRTHDAY, SO WE GET TO CUT LOOSE”—ACROSS THE BOARD.

On the surface, Lady Miss Kier, of the psychedelic bodysuits, platform heels, and flipped wigs, might seem an unusual muse for Tome, a line that skews minimalist. Then again, the designers describe the brand as being inspired by art, and Lady Miss Kier, aka Kierin Magenta Kirby, has created an incredibly colorful and engaging persona. Plus she shares an interest in environmental issues with Martin and Lobo. “Our art had a strong gravitational effect and brought us together like magnets,” says the performer. “I’m a fan of their clothes and they’re a fan of my music.”

But of course Kier’s appeal extends way beyond the turntable. She's “a legend and a lady and while she has that Endora from Bewitched glamour about her, she is no parts diva,” the designers say. “We remember that designers like Thierry Mugler actually borrowed from all of that. Her walking in his shows was the most exciting thing to us!”

Similarly besotted, we were dying to know more about her ladyship’s love of prints and her latest shoe obsessions, and she obliged with the following replies.

Who are your style icons? Grace Jones, Veruschka, Rosa Parks, Eartha Kitt, Alpana Bawa, Thierry Mugler, and Rumi from the Cockettes.

Can you talk a bit about your style evolution? I still believe the best accessory is a smile, the best attitude is no attitude, and the only permanent thing about me is change. New fashion usually inspires because it makes me think the world is changing. However, like history, everything repeats in time. Because good style is everlasting, it can’t be purchased.

You’ve always loved a print . . . [I’ve] always [been] a fan of Pucci, Marimekko, and recently Tabboo!’s prints in the new Marc Jacobs collection. Before music snatched me away, I majored in textile design at Pratt Phoenix and FIT. I dropped out as my songwriting hobby took off.

What about those Fleuvogs? [They] were easy to dance in with their wide bell-bottom heels. I wore them for two world tours in the ’90s and still bust them out today.

What’s your current state of footwear, post-Munster? At 5’3” I gravitate towards platform shoes. I’m usually wearing Jerome C. Rousseau as his color-blocking and velvet piping are gorgeous beyond, and he taps into that fashion sixth sense—essential to keep me returning year after year.

How has nightlife changed in New York? I could write a book on this, but will just say the NYC pendulum usually swings back, and I’ve learned to create my own scene when the NYC is going through one of its bad moods. I’m thrilled to hear about the house music revival coming from London over the last five years. I am thoroughly inspired by their take on the early ’90s NYC/NJ house sound.
