oh, you’re gluten free? one of my best buds found out she has celiac so we are always on the hunt for good stuff

yeah, I’ve been gluten-free since freshman year of high school, so going on eight years now.  I don’t have Celiac’s, but I do have gluten intolerance, and it makes life pretty damn tough.  

I’d recommend checking out Aldi.  they have AMAZING gluten-free stuff, and for good prices.  some of my favorite brands are Udi’s and Kinnickinnick (I esp like their pizza crusts).  Annie’s is good too, but they sell also organic non-gluten-free, so you have to make sure you read the label before you buy it.  Amy’s is also pretty decent, but has the same issue as Annie’s. 

overall, my top gluten-free brands are the stuff at Aldi and Udi’s.

It’s The Best Time of the Year!

In 2 weeks, I’ll be off to my favorite event of the year again, GFAF! For everyone who’s been following me for a while, you know I love this conference and all of the free goodies that come with it. WHAT: The annual GFAF (Gluten Free Allergy Free) conference in Worcester, MA aka the gluten free Superbowl! This year’s expo will feature almost 100 different vendors that are all COMPLETELY GLUTEN FREE. They even have a peanut free section for those with that allergy too. Some of my favorite brands attending this year include Brazi Bites, Enjoy Life, Kinnickinnick, Milton’s, and Schar.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (Kinnickinnick or Bearberry). Ericaceae family. I love this adorable ground cover. I want to break down the scientific name for you all... arctos = bear staphyle = a bunch of grapes uva = grape (Also happens to be the genus name for grapes) ursi = bear (again) ... so this is clearly the “bearberry” a couple times over. As for the other common name, Kinnickinnick: this is an Algonquian word meaning “smoking mixture”. The dried leaves were smoked by several coastal tribes.  References: Dictionary of Plant Names by Allen J Coombes, Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast by Pojar and Mackinnon.
