Fic Rec Friday

So, I'm pretty sure everyone has read this, but if you haven't you HAVETO.

It's Make Them Bow by the amazing for_darkness_shows_the_stars.

“Awww. So you’ve heard about me.” Damon grins. It shows off his fangs. “Can’t say the same about you. Mate.” “Oh, I sincerely doubt that.” Stefan chooses that moment to stand. He saunters over to the two of them and throws an arm over his friend’s shoulder. There is no mistaking the glee in his eyes. “Damon,” he says. “Might I introduce an old friend of mine? His name is Klaus.” . Klaus makes his way to Mystic Falls early, and for far less sinister reasons ... or, I drop Klaus into season one and watch the chaos unfold.

It's 224,820 words so it's a pretty long read but it is absolutely amazing.

Basically, Klaus is dropped into season 1 of tvd and Caroline promptly befriends him. It roughly follows canon and the consequent sub-plots, but in my opinion, it's mostly beautiful, pure, amazing fluff and the absolute most adorable interactions between all of the characters.

Klaus's inner monologue also has me literally crying at points because it's such a good representation of all the trauma he went through (which we all love to use as an excuse for anything bad he does 🫶). Vampires, especially old ones, presumably have more complex and thorough thought patterns and I think this is also represented really well.

I also love (and I'm not spoiling anything cos this is in the tags) how Liz adopts Klaus and is such a caring and gentle parental figure after a thousand years of Klaus viewing parents as Those Most Likely To Fuck You Up. In general, Liz's adapting to Caroline's vampirism is really well represented.

Anyway, I'm re-reading it this week, so I had to talk to someone about it. And I know I put this one on my 2023 fic list but I didn't realise that until I'd typed out this whole thing.

Keep forgetting to do this - and also forgetting what I've recced already lol, but I read this this week and really enjoyed it!

She looked at him straight in the eyes, blue locking with blue, her eyes wide and bright, while flashing him her perfect cheerleader smile. “I need your help.” He quirked an eyebrow at her. He didn’t think she’d ever been so quite straightforward before. “Well, it must be quite serious if there’s no time for you to play coy first, sweetheart.” She scoffed, rolling her eyes. “Don’t pretend like you don’t like it.” His hand went up to his heart, clutching his chest in mock offense. “Oh, I would never, love. I quite enjoy it as it is the only time you’re ever nice to me.” (Or, Caroline kills Damon. It spirals from there.)

It's a short one-shot, with a sprinkling of ✨damon murder✨ and Caroline in complete denial that her burying bodies with klaus has become their thing. Lot's of banter, it's great, go take a look!

AU. Caroline has been keeping her head down, trying to avoid getting noticed by the Originals. But when Damon attempts to drag her into his most recent suicidal plan to save Elena, she finds herself the recipient of attention from the infamous Klaus … and she’s not entirely sure how to feel about it.

It was only a matter of time before I reviewed/recced a fic by Keira_63. This author never misses and I'm not exaggerating when I say that I love EVERY SINGLE FIC they've ever written.

Warning! Contains: Damon being a douchebag (but really, what else is new).

Our Queen is a neurotic, Type-A overachiever and people tend to underestimate her..... pity for them, not her problem.

At least Caroline finally lets him have it..... Klaus is immediately smitten: "She was quite magnificent."

Anyways, this fic is WONDERFUL.

The complexity of Klaroline sharing a whole life together as roommates who care for each other has many very funny, tender and romantic moments, and electric and charged moments of connection too that are everything.

All the World’s A Stage by @helpless-in-sleep Riveting Celebrity KC exes with lots of charged encounters where sparks fly as Klaus orbits around Caroline amidst movie sets and red carpets. Loved all the celebrity glitz and fun, and the very strong feelings and unresolved tensions and past conflicts, hurt and regrets, and most especially how they write a new ending together.

Wanted to kick off fic rec Fridays with this gem:

Even during my long hiatus I still thought of this fic. The author really crafted this with care - each word placed carefully to paint a vivid picture. i'm a big, big fan of both scene descriptions and inner thoughts, and this abounded with both alongside fantastic characterization.

I think this 25k mermaid AU oneshot deserves more attention, so give it a shot!

For today's Klaroline fic rec Friday, I want to feature throw roses into the abyss by @marxandangels (https://archiveofourown.org/bookmarks/1362584470). It's a WIP, but they haven't left me on a cliffhanger yet. It's a canonish AU where no-humanity Caroline shows up in New Orleans looking for Klaus. The characterizations are fantastic; both Klaus and Caroline grow through the story in ways that feel so real and so earned. The little nuances they bring to both characters just ruin me every time I reread (and it's been several times already).

If you're not ready to jump into a 60k WIP, they have two short Klaroline one-shots that are also amazing.

i have read and reread this fic about a million times, and each it surprises me anew with how insanely good it is. like, yes it’s crack, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have these small moments that make your heart melt. seriously. this is one of my favourite fics of all time.

Fic Rec Friday

In line with last week's rec, don't ever let this die by coveredinthecolors, is another angsty klaroline fic with a happy ending.

Not being given a choice, Klaus learned how to be a better ghost. It brought a twisted smile to his phantasmagoric lips. Haunting his soulmate was, perhaps, not the most noble of paths, but it brought him some semblance of joy. - Or: Klaus dies and becomes his soulmate's guardian angel.

This made me shed a few tears, and was a lovely idea that was exceptionally well executed.

As the summary says, Klaus dies and becomes Caroline's guardian angel. She can't see or hear him, which is such lovely torture.

Watching Klaus fall in love with her... augh, you just have to read it.

This was a very klaroline-centric fic, but the references to Klaus' siblings were so precious.

This is also quite a short read at ~6,500 words, so it's an amazing quality piece that you can scoff down like I did to my Easter chocolate. ❤️

This fic is a blast to read, just a good dose of fun. Caroline breaks Klaus' nose in the mosh-pit, and what follows is an awkwardly adorable trip to the ER wherein Klaus gets increasingly smitten.

Week #3 - my 1st post

5: Stefan and Elena don’t discover Caroline after she makes her first kill at the carnival. Caroline figures things out on her own and a nighttime trip out of town sees her enlisting the help of a different witch for a daylight ring. Caroline might be a vampire – but she’s still her, and now she has kick-ass powers. Guess she’s a superhero. Klaus is amused when they meet. – in other words, everyone needs an origin story.

This fic is near and dear to my heart. Canon-divergence, long one-shot (16k friends!!), the Mystic Gang being clueless - this fic has it all. I've come back to this story, again and again, over the past 8 years. Our girl Caroline is resilient as hell and this fic shows it! If no-one is going to help those in need, then it's up to her. She has different allies and gets to show off her truly stupendous sewing skills (hot pink is featured). A fic that starts off with some self-healing and ends with a delicious (pun intended) meeting (there is at least one pun).

Everyone should read this if you haven't already!

Why you should read it:

OMG, you guys!!! This fic!! ❤❤❤ It’s fluffy, but it’s not silly. It doesn’t dumb down the characters or their relationship. And yet it is so, so sweet! 

It’s my absolute favorite kind of story - canon dfivergent! :D - and it has Caroline going away to college on her own. Caroline’s voice here is SO on point. It has all the sass and all the clever and all the Caroline-esque one liners that make her so fun and witty and sharp. The way her train of thought is written here is just amazing. I’m usually a total dialogues-whore, and this story doesn’t even have that much dialogue, but Caroline’s inner musings are as great as any dialogue. It captures her SO perfectly I can imagine her expressions, feel her reactions, just by reading her mental thoughts, no need for long expositions (which I am terribly guilty of and very deeply wish I wasn’t, it makes me love and admire this writer’s style so much more).

“And then…you won’t be you?” Elena guesses. She sounds a little charmed by the idea, but mostly just worried, and Caroline wants to reassure her, it’s not like she’s in the Insecure! Abort Operation Life! stage of being a seventeen-year-old, it’s just, if she’s going to be freaking seventeen forever, she wants to be lots of different seventeen-year-olds. She wants to major in history, and go to feminist rallies, and parade across a ramp and just, do everything ever. But it’s kind of hard to explain, so she doesn’t say anything.

The way Klaus shows up at her campus and kind of lazily stalks her for a while, doesn’t even try that hard or push that much, just stands there and kind of waits for her to give up and give in brilliant. The story acknowledges the existence of miracle!baby, which adds a fantastic depth here, IMO. The fact we know Klaus is running away from New Orleans to spend time around Caroline, the way he reacts to the brief mentions of the pregnancy, all the way to Caroline’s final comprehension of what exactly he’s doing there, why he keeps showing up when she just sends him away time and time again -

And god, it hits her so suddenly, she doesn’t even know how she missed it. She knows what he’s doing here with the clothes and the take-out and this nearly-date-night-Friday thing. And the lack of emo paintings depicting his inner tortured soul. And not a single mention of showing her the world or his usual Browning-esque Dramatic Monologues of Doom.

He’s doing ordinary.

Fuck. He’s actually in love with her.

IT’S JUST SO SWEET, YOU GUYS. You can take a thousand things from Klaus, despite the fact the story is entirely narrated from Caroline’s POV, just from this. Fatherhood and New Orleans is doing him in, and it’s in Caroline and her idea of normalcy - which he argues against, because she’s a vampire, she’s extraordinary, why would she want to settle for mediocre and nondescript when she’s anything but? - is his comfort place, where he finds solace, where he finds himself. 

It’s short and sweet and it has a fantastic writing that is witty and dynamic and flows so very well. If you’re looking for something fun and easy to warm your heart and, like me, you can’t resist canon divergent fics, look no further!

interlude: bridges by @little-miss-sunny-daisy Have been on a little binge rereading some of @little-miss-sunny-daisy stories and they are all glorious. This particular story is very poignant and moving, and has many very beautiful quotes. (Warning: angst)

Three Hundred Miles of Good Road by @bellemorte180 Love this tender and terribly romantic love story where Klaus sees the world anew through Caroline and she inspires him to be better. The use of Klaus’s POV is very unique and poetic.

We'll Always Have New Orleans @galvanizedfriend Caroline/Klaroline are trapped together in a reality where they’re human and everyone but them thinks this is normal and Nik is her boyfriend a med student. Love all the funny moments of them grappling with their reality and pretending to be somewhat normal, but also the suspense and drama of what is going on.
