1. Share a song that makes you think of “Dragonhearted”

I genuinely have a mostly love, little hate, relationship with this fic, especially near the end, but it took me a little under two years and I am INSANELY proud of it all the same. This song is 100% perfect for it, I promise.

4. How many WIPs do you have right now?

This is such a loaded question so I’m going to break it down some, I guess lol

8. What project(s) are you currently working on?

My current focus fics for this month are “Bookbinder//Songwriter” and “May Your Forge Burn Bright”, but I have also finished my outline for “Golden Hearts Bleed Faster” and started my next chapter for “Kurdu ‘abadaz”.

27. Is there a fic you were nervous to post/share? Why?

YES!!! Bookbinder//Songwriter was probably the scariest one for me. I had never written a modern au and had been told by some other people that modern AUs don’t do well or aren’t seen as good, WHATEVER IT WAS, it was really discouraging and nerve wracking, but it has now become one of my greatest decisions. It started out as a little ficlet request that features all of my favorite things, really, and now this fic is becoming my golden child, I love it so much!!!

4. Link to a great meta you’ve read.

Unfortunately, this is where I reveal that I don't normally read a lot of meta unless it's pretty short. I do just so happen to have accidentally saved some to my drafts (I meant to queue it I think) but here it is (Maeglin meta). I'm typically a fan of anything that calls into question the narration of the Silm and deals with potential bias son the part of its in-universe writer(s). Especially where Maeglin, Eöl, and Aredhel are concerned, because I think there's a lot of bias in that narrative.

8. Best thing about canon

I really like the themes of Tolkien's work. Arda Marred and the thread of sadness woven through the song of creation really tug at my heart in a way that no other piece of media really does. I love the fact that the weight of history is felt in every part of Middle-earth and that though things bear the marks of the past, they sometimes cannot be restored. It's one of the things that I try valiantly to include in my own works based in Middle-earth.

17. Something you love that you don’t often share because you’re worried what others will think

There was a hint of it earlier there - did you see it? It's that all three of Aredhel, Maeglin, and yes, even Eöl are my blorbos. I have a very different interpretation of that situation than most people do; one that is borne out of my own life experience and so is a little vulnerable to discuss. I see the situation more as a slow-motion tragedy in which two people who were completely wrong for each other met, married, and realized far too late that they'd made a horrible mistake, influenced by the magic of the ancient trees of Nan Elmoth. My heart aches for them that this is what happened - they all deserved better. Other people's interpretations of this passage as evidence of abuse are absolutely valid, of course. But I don't interpret it that way, and I think my analysis is also perfectly valid (for the Silmarillion's text at least - not talking the HoME versions, which I see tagged as Silm more often than not). I have a fic in mind that would flesh out the version of events in my head, but I'm not sure I'll ever write it, since it goes so much against the grain of common fanon about them and is likely to make a lot of folks unhappy.

7. What is your favorite scene you’ve written so far?

I’m not hugely satisfied with it yet – it needs editing methinks – but the Beren and Lúthien one! SO excited to have these two back in the story and causing Events. My darling girl is so fun to write, I’ve missed her.

EREGION!!!! it's sooo beautiful and the enemies are just what i want. and it's full of berries <3 and the music is gorgeous and ethereal and a little bit creepy and haunting at parts and it makes me insane

11. If you could have one npc as a companion to run around with you, who would it be? would it be the same for all your characters?

not really? there was one annoying bug during the anniversary at mirrormere (because it takes a ridiculous journey to get there) where the remembrance you're trying to pick up is like... inside the earth lmao but other than that, not many that i remember?

4) What passage in Tolkien's books or in any of the films/shows/media speaks to you the most?

Gotta say, this is probably the hardest one to pick. Here's the quote I'm going with, from Thorin and Bilbo's final conversation in The Hobbit:

"There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."

The Hobbit is my favorite of the books, and I think this quote sort of epitomizes the themes of this particular story. The value of their journey and everything they went through to reclaim the mountain was not in the treasure hoard, but in the home they would make of it in the end. It rounds off all the themes, and tips the narrative arc as well as Bilbo's character arc into their completion, with his decision to journey back to the Shire after Thorin dies.

Also it makes me cry. It makes me cry every time I read it. It makes me cry for what was, and could have been, and what will never be. I cried just typing this out. It emotionally devastates me. It breaks my heart into a million bloody little pieces, and I will never be over it.

(If you're curious, my number two choice is Sam's speech to Frodo at the end of The Two Towers. You know the one.)

6) Favorite character in all of Tolkien's work?

.....In the middle of the earth, in the land of Shire lives a brave little hobbit whom we all admire! With his long wooden pipe, fuzzy woolly toes, he lives in a hobbit-hole and everybody knows him- Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins! He's only three feet tall! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins! The bravest little hobbit of them all!

9) The place (and time) you would most like to visit in Arda? Why?

Firstly, I would like to visit the Shire, always. It's beautiful and green and generally peaceful (aside from, you know, the Scouring and whatnot).

Secondly, I would like to have seen Khazad-dûm in its heyday during the Second Age. We know that Khazad-dûm became a haven for refugees from Nogrod and Belegost after the battles against Morgoth, as well as a thriving center for art and trade and intercultural exchange (especially since this was also a time and place of much friendlier relations between dwarrow and elves).

What we see of Khazad-dûm through the main narratives is mostly tragic- a place defined by grief and ruin. I would like to have seen it when it was a place defined more by joy and laughter and creation.

12) Tolkien's work contains a lot of interesting themes: devastation of war, things lost that cannot be restored, rebirth/renewal, holding true to one's companions even when it is darkest, and others. Which is the most important to you?

Courage. Courage in the face of overwhelming, even impossible odds. Bilbo encountering Smaug, and then trying to barter peace with the Arkenstone ("Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did."). The Battle of the Pelennor Fields ("We cannot defeat the armies of Mordor." "No, we cannot. But we will meet them in battle nonetheless."). The Battle of the Black Gate ("We must walk open-eyed into that trap, with courage, but small hope for ourselves."; "A day may come when the courage of men fails...but it is not this day! This day we fight!"). Frodo and Sam's last climb up Mount Doom ("Sam struggled on as best he could, having no guidance but the will to climb as high as might be before his strength gave out."; "A gleam of hope returned...So foot by foot, like small grey insects, they crept up the slope.").

....Damn, I really made myself cry again with this one.

20) What is your favorite Tolkien universe headcanon? Why did you choose to accept it?

Friend Fili, I'm stealing this one from you (though I will admit, this one has been so integrated into my view of Middle Earth that I actually forgot it wasn't canon XD).

It brings my heart joy to believe that the hobbits, who so love the rolling hills and little rivers and all things that grow, are creations of Yavanna. Also because Bagginshield. Always because Bagginshield.

3. What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?

I haven't written all that many, but to prevent Scars from stomping the others (it's the longfic and my BABY), I'll pick one of the one-shots too. For that, I think "Until the Stars Burn Out," which was inspired by the fic of a friend. I tried to match styles and it was a little outside my comfort zone. I'm very proud of how it turned out.

8. What project(s) are you currently working on?

A longfic called "Scars of Silver and Gold", which is almost half done now. A Galadriel/Melian one-shot. A "Finrod's last moments" one-shot, that might not ever see the light of day, tbh, because it's starting to feel more like the climax of a longfic and I Don't Have Time for that. A fic of drabble-length conversations between Melkor and Mandos during the former's long imprisonment. And a one-shot about Nerdanel in the wake of the First Kinslaying. Those are the fics that currently have words written for them. I've started outlining two longer pieces (A Gothic Romance AU Adar/OC and another non-Adar centric RoP fic, that I've been calling the Oathbreaker King AU - what if Halbrand was the ghost king from RotK instead of Sauron?, think shifting narrator chapter to chapter, telling the story until the Last Alliance)

15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?

Uhhh. For Scars, I spent a long time thinking about the themes that I wanted the fic to have. About how even with restoration, you can still see the marks left by the past. And I remembered that in Japan, they sometimes put broken ceramics back together with silver or gold in an artform called "kintsugi." So that's why Scars of Silver and Gold is called that. For one-shots or chapters, I don't take nearly as long. I just kind of sit quietly and think about the things that stand out to me about the chapter for about 15 minutes before I post it. Very rarely do I use more than a few words or take longer than that.

27. Is there a fic you were nervous to post/share? Why?

Maybe the first time I posted anything spicy? But I also specifically made this account to be spicy and secret from IRL people. So ... I mean, what's the worst that was going to happen, lol. I think in the future, if I venture into Silm fic, I'm going to be very nervous about some things. Most of my headcanons are pretty different from popular fanon, so ... [concerns]
