Your Local Defense Team Cat

Crew GUYS has a cat. The cat, Mirai, is rather odd.

If asked, Ryu would say he didn’t feel any particular way about cats. For the most part, that was true, he didn’t really dislike them, nor did he like them. There was, though, one exception to that. Around Crew GUYS’ base, there was this one stray cat that roamed around, he was called Mirai, though no one knows who gave him that name.

Mirai was rather big, for a stray cat, and his fur was fluffy - Ryu was pretty sure someone had to be brushing his fur. He loved attention and was very talkative, often meowing during conversations, as though giving his own input. If you were sitting down when he was around, there was a chance he leap into your lap and curl up there. Mirai was oddly friendly and everyone began to consider him a part of Crew GUYS. Moral support, or something.

The point is, though Ryu wasn’t necessarily fond of cats, Mirai was something of an exception. Often times, he felt less like a cat and more like a person... A person who you can’t understand and was smaller. And more furry, and had claws.

Speaking of, here comes Mirai now, catching a ride into the room in Marina’s arms. Usually he caught a ride with Konomi, but it seems that his puppy dog eyes - a hilarious thought given he was a cat - convinced Marina to bring him in. As Marina sits down, Mirai launches out of her arms and lands on the floor. 

Walking over towards Ryu, Mirai looks up at him and meows, seemingly waiting for Ryu to give his approval. With a sigh, Ryu leaned over and picked Mirai up, setting him in his lap. Mirai purred, curling up to lay down.

While most cats would simply jump onto someone’s lap to lay down, MIrai always seemed to wait for approval. He stand or sit there, waiting for you to tell him it’s okay, as though he was worried about offending you or something. In a lot of ways, Mirai was just like your average cat. In a lot of ways he wasn’t and that was just a part of the conundrum that was Mirai the cat.

Absentmindedly, Ryu began to pet Mirai, as the cat continued purring. Off to the side, Marina laughs. “Geez, Ryu, Mirai really likes you, huh?”

Ryu grumbled to himself at her teasing tone. “He’s a cat, not much I can do about that. If he wants to do something, he’ll do it.”

“A very polite cat,” Marina notes, “Because you have to let him on your lap before he’ll come up.”

“Still a cat.” Mirai stands and rubs himself against Ryu’s arm at that, “And it’s not like you or I can tell him what to do.”

After a while, Mirai hops off of Ryu’s lap, stretching. That was not the only thing that happened at that moment. Just seconds later, Lim appeared, causing Mirai to be startled, jumping back a bit. Then, Mirai moves toward Lim, seemingly attempting to cuddle with Lim. In response to the sudden touch of the cat against him, Lim let out a small shock, knocking Mirai away.

A gasp could be heard from Konomi as she rushed towards the two of them, most likely to check on Mirai. Mirai was, though, only slightly worse for wear, for some reason or another. His fur was a little singed and he now smelled a bit smokey, but other than that, he stood up and began to clean himself as though nothing ever happened.

George peers over from his desk, “So either Lim’s started to tone done the electrocution,” He said, “Or the theory that Mirai is actually some kind of alien cat is more accurate than we thought.”

Konomi glared at him with a huff, “Clearly, Lim just didn’t shock him as much as he did you.” She insisted, picking up Mirai, who began to loudly purr, as he often did. “That and Mirai pulled away rather quickly.”

George didn’t look convinced.

“What do you mean by ‘the theory that Mirai is actually some kind of alien cat’?” Marina asked.

“It’s a theory I’ve heard,” George defended, “Besides, it would explain why he’s such a weird cat.”

Rolling his eyes, Ryu simply says, “Next you’ll say he’s actually Ultraman Mebius.”

Mirai meowed happily.

Top 5 Ultra Heroines!

This is part of my contribution to the second @week-of-toku-ladies celebration of women in Tokusatsu!  This list celebrates the non-powered heroines of the Ultraman series who work for the various defense organizations or other support teams that defend the Earth from aliens and monsters alongside the giant heroes!  This is also perfectly times as today (July 17, 2017) is the 51st Anniversary of the airdate for the original Ultraman!

Let’s get started with:

5) Elly from Ultraman Max

Eri (played by Hikari Mitsushima) in a gynoid operator who works for defense agency DASH (Defense Action Squad Heroes). Elly is fascinated by human behavior and wishes to be more human. She does he best to blend with her human colleagues and eventually even cries twice in the course of the series. 

4) Naomi Yumeno from Ultraman Orb

The most recent heroine on this list and the only one to not work for a defense organization.  Instead, Naomi (played by Miyabi Matsuura) is the head of the SSP (Something Search People) who investigate paranormal and alien related events for their online journal. She becomes involved with Gai, the human form of Ultraman Orb and it turns out the two have a much closer tie than either of them initially thought.

3) Konomi Amagai from Ultraman Mebius

Originally a preschool teacher before being recruited into Crew GUYS, Konomi (played by Misato Hirata) is a kind and gentle member of the team. She worries often about her place on the team and worries she’s not brave enough to be a part of a group defending the Earth from attack. She has a special bond with some of the monsters including Miclas, who will only obey her, and the tiny version of Eleking named Lim.

2) Akiko Fuji from the original Ultraman

The radio operator of the team, Akiko (played by Hikoki Sakurai) doesn’t often get to go on missions but she has proven herself capable in the field.  She once became a giant under the influence of an evil alien and threatened the city. In a lot of ways, she is often the voice of reason and the least likely to fly off half-cocked when things get bad.

1) Anne Yuri from Ultraseven

Portrayed by Yuriko Hishimi, Anne had two major roles on the team. Much like Akiko, she was the communications operator but she was also the team nurse, often working in the Ultra Squad medical unit to help injured teammates recover. She has feelings for her teammate, Dan Moroboshi and was the member he eventually revealed his true identity as Ultraseven to.  In some later media, the two are shown to be a couple (as seen in the final episode of Ultraseven X from 2007)

Mirai and a Cat Cafe

Konomi brings Mirai to a cat cafe. Cats like Mirai, as it turns out.

It wasn’t as though Mirai’s adoration of cats had gone unnoticed by everyone in Crew GUYS. It was actually really hard not to notice, given he always had a huge smile on his face whenever someone showed him a picture or video of a cat. Which was why someone suggest they take him to a cat cafe.

At this point, no one remembers who suggested it, but it was Konomi taking him. As she lead him there, she could see him grinning the whole way. He seemed to be super excited, nearly vibrating with excitement.

After they arrived, Konomi had to step away for a few moments. She’d only been gone for a couple minutes, but when she returned, she found Mirai with several cats climbing over him and in his lap. He was trying his best to pet all of them, though was only able to pet two or so at a time.

Konomi giggled, quickly taking a photo, “Say cheese, Mirai!”

Mirai looked over, confused for a moment, before smiling when he realized that she was taking a photo. One of the cats climbed from his shoulders to his head, Now he’s gently scritching the ears of one of the cats in his lap while another clambers up his arm.

“How did so many cats get to you?” She asked, sitting down across from him. The area around Mirai had multiple cats. It seemed like many of the cats had all came and flocked to him. “I was only gone for a couple minutes.”

With a small smile, Mirai tilts his head as he continues to pet and scratch the cats, “I don’t know,” He said, “They just came over here.”

One of the cats meowed and jumped out of his lap. The cat wandered around for a bit, before settling on the floor beside Konomi. She reached down to pet it. “They seem to like you,” She noted.

As another cat jumped down, this time simply setting on the ground beside him, Mirai responded, “Well I like cats. And other animals... But cats are nice.”

Konomi laughs again, then proceeded to watch Mirai pet and scratch the cats for a while. He seemed to enjoy them, so she was happy He was enjoying himself, at least.

The Cuddle Pile

Mebius likes to cuddle with his friends, alright?

The first time it had happened, Mebius had had a long day. It hadn’t really been anything in particular, just a bunch of small things that all added up, resulting in him being far more tired than normal when he ended the day. 

As such, he’d sort of just curled up that evening. Somehow, through actions that no one was entirely clear of, this resulted in most of the former members of Crew GUYS awakening in something of a pile. Marina definitely recalled seeing Mebius try and hug Ryu after they had both fallen asleep and it certainly wasn’t unusual for people to gravitate towards each other in their sleep. It was usually because someone got cold and it was usually towards Mebius, who for one reason or  another - whether because he had the ability to set himself on fire, thus making him much warmer than other or because Ultras were just warm and Crew GUYS either didn’t gain that part or just were colder, was unclear. (Or maybe the reason for it altogether was just that Mebius was very… cuddly. No one was going to deny his “cheer up” cuddles weren’t oh so very wonderful and comforting. Even George could only complain a bit whenever he woke up and found Mebius curled near him. 

After that “incident” as George immediately began to call it - everyone else was pretty sure he was just a bit embarrassed - they found themselves creating a cozy area in the corner of the living room. Konomi immediately dubbed it the “Cuddle Corner” to little surprise. 

The Cuddle Corner got used in varying degrees of frequency, mostly in some way by Mebius, who was delighted by it. It wasn’t unusual for him to curl up there when he was tired, and then someone would join him. Usually, if Ryu joined, it was because Mebius partially dragged him to, if Marina, Teppei, or Konomi joined, it was because they’d decided they wanted cuddles and willingly went, Teppei with a bit of a flustered expression, the first few times. Sakomizu was always a bit more awkward to involve in the cuddling, though since he was no longer they’re captain, whatever might have stopped Mebius from finding a way wasn’t present. George only ever cuddled if he was effectively dragged to do it, which Mebius was particularly good at, even if he was met with some minor protest - they all knew that George really didn’t mind, he was just a bit embarrassed by Mebius’ open affection. By pretty much anyone’s affection, actually.

They’d all gotten used to Mebius’ particularly affectionate ways, they’d been used to it to some degree on Earth, but now that they were all together much more, there was a lot more of Mebius’ brand of affection. Hugs, cuddles, laughs and smiles were all common when Mebius was around. He wasn’t shy when it came to his friends - they’d seen how he was with Taiga even, someone who he may have assisted in with his training, but was nevertheless someone Mebius was close with. Mebius and Taiga were rather close, and that may have simply been because Taiga’s father had been Mebius’ teacher, but in the end the bond they had was something the two had ultimately made on their own. (Although Mebius was still of the opinion that Taiga shouldn’t be so resistant to making friends and spending time with people his own age, but that was another story entirely.)

The point of it all was, Mebius was a very affectionate person. His friends were fine with that, they all - whether they admitted it or not - enjoyed it, to some degree or another. (It would be a lie to say that they all didn’t enjoy their welcome back hugs they were given when they’d once more saw Mebius, after awakening in the Land of Light.)

(Though they were all pretty sure that someone had a picture of all or most of them sprawled together in the Cuddle Corner. It might have been Taro, but it was more likely someone else. Marina and Konomi often threw ideas around, Teppei just meeped, George groaned at the thought that someone might have proof of the cuddles, Sakomizu chuckled, Ryu just shrugged while Mebius smiled.)

(Though none of them knew it, it was actually Zoffy, who had only come over to get the last page of a report that had gotten separated from the rest from Mebius. He’d decided it was quicker to just go to Mebius’ house to ask for it than to wait until tomorrow. When he’d arrived, he’d Mebius and his friends in a corner of pillows and blankets, all piled together. Deciding not to disturb them, Zoffy simply found the last page of the report and was going to leave. Still it was a nice sight, to see Mebius so relaxed with people he cared about so much and it was rather… sweet. So Zoffy took a quick picture before he left. He’s yet to say a word of it to anyone.)
