Scott/Martyn Parallels
So Scott and Martyn actually have a lot of interesting parallels and dichotomies throughout the Life Series that in my opinion, make the way Limited Life ended very interesting from a narrative perspective, despite it being an unscripted series with arguable no narrative. So I wanna go through ‘em.
So first of all, Scott and Martyn are often opposed in interesting ways.
In 3rd Life, Martyn actually asked Jimmy to leave Scott and team up with him instead. This was very early on, I believe near the end of the first episode. Jimmy declined the offer, choosing Scott over Martyn. (This theme is kind of carried over into Double Life but we’ll get to that later)
Another parallel is that both Scott and Martyn later die because of their respective alliances. Martyn dies fighting with Ren, and Scott dies when he’s left alone after Jimmy dies. It’s interesting, because arguably, Jimmy choosing to be loyal to Scott may have caused the death of both of them.
Anyway, moving onto Last Life, in this season there’s much less correlation. The main source of comparison is that they both end up in the final 4 battle with someone they had been allied with during the season (Pearl and Ren) So while there’s not too much narrative parallel, we still keep the theme of Martyn losing to Scott.
Now we have Double Life. We all know, Cleo choosing Scott over Martyn. The Martyn rejection arc continues. However, they also both reject Pearl, and then end up dying because of it. Martyn and Cleo are killed fighting Pearl, and Scott kills himself to let her win.
So basically we have a dynamic where Martyn is often rejected in favor of allying with Scott, and often loses the series because of him as well. He dies because of his alliance with Ren, Scott kills him in the final battle of Last Life, and he and Cleo are killed by Pearl because of the dynamic caused by both Scott and Martyn.
Then we have Limited Life, where instead of being rejected in favor of Scott, Martyn is Scott’s ally. Finally, instead of being opposed, they work in tandem. It’s the first time since Third Life that Martyn has a two person alliance that persists throughout the whole series.
And when it comes down to the final few, Martyn uses the loyalty Scott has, the same loyalty that’s had Martyn rejected twice, to betray and kill Scott, winning him the series. When Jimmy first rejected his offer, it had led to him allying with Ren. An alliance he had planned to betray, but never got the chance to do it. And now, when in the same type of alliance with the reason Jimmy rejected the offer, he finally got to enact that plan.
Anyway this is just me connecting imaginary dots and going “look at the dots guys they’re all connected” But it was fun lol.
