Summer 2023 Wig Updates: North American Productions

The Canadian production has officially opened! I'll do a more in-depth look at all of the wigs later this week, but a few quick updates worthy of note: - Julia Pulo doesn't have any major changes to the base style, but we're finally getting to see a North American Boleyn with curls!! - Krystal Hernández got the red ponytail braid style for Cleves. It has some changes to the specific style, which I'll go into more detail about this week. - Lauren Mariasoosay has the back ponytail that's becoming an alternative standardized style. Hers has a very different base than any of the UK and most of the prior North American Parr wigs in this style, but it definitely fits the general category of the back center ponytail. Again, comparison post coming soon. - We've also seen a few of the alts' hairstyles! So far everything has been as expected, but it does answer one of the big questions I've had: what hair color they'd give Darcy Stewart. She might not get the same color for all three of her queens, but at least for Boleyn they went for a light blonde that reads more strawberry blonde under stage lights.

Over in the Broadway and North American Tour... - Khaila Wilcoxon joined Broadway as a temporary replacement for Aragon. She's still wearing her wig from the Aragon Tour. - And Sydney Parra got the back ponytail style about a week ago, which we've seen slowly become standardized for non-Black actors. It might be her old wig re-styled but I'm waiting on better photos to confirm that. The styling seems to be more in line with Lauren Mariasoosay's wig than some of the past in this style, but again I'm waiting for better photos.

Quick thoughts on the Edmonton Queens (I am still reeling):

Jaz Robinson: very classic Aragon. Strong vocals, tight acting, and all-around powerful performance. (She can really hold a note!!)

Julia Pulo: comedic Queen—she isn't a full-on "chaos gremlin", but she knows when to get hammy. Also, I love that she portrays her Boleyn as (not-so-)secretly reluctant during the events of "Don't Lose Ur Head". She plays to how the real Anne likely felt about Henry's pursuit, which was, well, "What was I meant to do?"

Maggie Lacasse: I didn't realize I needed a Quebecoise Seymour, but there you go. I fully, fully started crying before she even started singing "Heart of Stone". She plays Jane's sweetness and cruelty wonderfully.

Krystal Hernández: MY BELOVED! Super performance, fully embodies everything Anna is meant to be in the musical: cocky, fun-loving, and a voice of reason. (She was super sweet to me re: "Get Down", too. >W<)

Elysia Cruz: sooo good. I love how she seemed to play Katherine's feelings toward Culpepper less as genuine friendship and more her trying to convince herself that at least one man in Henry's court was okay. You really, really feel for her Katherine. (Also, her "I mean, we don't knooow"? Excellent example of her comedic delivery.)

Lauren Mariasoosay: excellent Parr. Her "I'm out" is one of a woman who genuinely can't bear the thought of what she's been doing—she's not angry; she simply cannot do it anymore.

In conclusion: fantastic cast. If I'm able to see Six again during this run, I will, and I recommend strongly that you see it, too.

okay, so for Demeter, it's a toss-up between Aeva May and Lauren Mariasoosay

i'm so in love with both their Demeters it's not even funny. Aeva will always have my heart as the version of Demeter I fell in love with, but seeing Lauren perform live... i've talked before about how Lauren and Devon were the perfect Demestrap after Michael and Aeva's Demestrap, so either of them would be my dream casting for Demeter.

2nd August - Ellie Jane Grant makes her BOLEYN debut, completing her 2nd covers

7th August - Gabriella Boumford makes her ARAGON debut

9th August - The Breakaway 5.0 cast play their final performance, marking the final shows of Gabbi Mack, Sunayna Smith, Hannah Taylor, Sasha Renae Brown, Sarah McFarlane and Megan Leung

9th August - The West End 4.0 cast announce that their final shows will be on the 15th October, and that the entirety of the cast will be leaving.

12th August - The Canadian Production opens in Edmonton, marking the debuts of Jaz Robinson, Maggie Lacasse, Krystal Hernandez, Elysia Cruz and Lauren Mariasoosay

12th August - Darcy Stewart makes a last minute debut as BOLEYN for the opening previews in Edmonton!

18th August - Khaila Wilcoxon is announced as the temporary replacement for Aragon, while Hailee recovers from injury. She makes her redebut that night.

19th August - A workshop poster leaks that Danielle Fiamanya (who previously played Elsa in Frozen West End) will be in a new cast of SIX (presumably West End)

asking you the same question bc I'm curious now- what would your dream demestrap actor combination be and what is your favorite actual demestrap combination?

I would be really interested to see what Lauren Louis/Mariasoosay and Alexander Auler would come up with as a demestrap dynamic! I love Lauren's performance and voice and I always wished I could see Auler because the clips I saw of him always gave me good Munk vibes. I feel like with him as a partner Lauren could let the more mature aspects of her Demeter shine though, as opposed to having to work with the sort of boyish attitudes brought on by her costars. Plus they're both gorgeous dksjgdbsdg

I'd also REALLY LOVE to see Aeva May with Jack Rebaldi!!!! His Munk is just so strong, I think they'd make an insane pair. Like the couple you look up to and do not mess with. They both bring a kind of intensity and complexity to the characters and I think it could make for a more serious, maybe even slightly darker production. Throw a strong Macavity in the mix like Aiden Pressel and it'd be off the charts

But unsurprisingly my favorite actual pair is Michael Gruber and Aeva May <3 I would honestly kill to have seen them with the revival blocking/more Demestrap moments. They don't get much 'alone time' in 98 but the moments they do have are so visceral in an easy-going way, it's like "yeah these two belong together." Like just LOOK at them. perfection
