The euro exchange rate has fallen for nine consecutive weeks as the market bets that the European Central Bank has completed its mission of raising interest rates

The euro fell 0.5% against the U.S. dollar this week as markets bet the European Central Bank will not raise interest rates again, setting itself up for its longest losing streak since its inception.
In fact, since mid-July, the euro has fallen for a ninth consecutive week, down 5.6%, and is currently trading near its lowest level since March.
Traders have been selling the euro for the past two months on bets that the European Central Bank will struggle to further tighten monetary policy amid signs of deterioration in the economy, a view that gained support this week.
The day before, the European Central Bank raised interest rates by 25 basis points, bringing interest rates to a record high, but it also sent a hint that the euro zone's borrowing costs may have peaked.
At a press conference, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said that Thursday's interest rate hike may be the last rate increase in this round, but she did not rule out the possibility of further interest rate hikes if economic data disappoints.
Lagarde reiterated language from the ECB's policy statement, saying the bank's officials judged that interest rates "have reached a level where maintaining it for a long enough period of time will be materially helpful in bringing inflation down to the 2% target." ".
The comments prompted investors to lower their expectations for future interest rates from the European Central Bank, pushing the euro-dollar exchange rate below $1.07.
Interest rates in the euro area remain lower than those in the United States, while inflation is high and the economy is in trouble, in contrast to relatively healthy economic growth in the United States, all of which are weighing on the euro.
Dipak Shah, head of foreign exchange options trading at Nomura Holdings, commented that the European Central Bank has given the market a reason to short the euro, and we expect euro shorts to gain momentum, not only against the euro/dollar, but also against other currencies.
Frederik Ducrozet, director of macroeconomic research at Pictet Wealth Management, a Geneva-based institution, said the European Central Bank has probably completed its mission of raising interest rates.

Wael Makarem, senior market strategist for the Middle East and North Africa at Exness, said in a report that the weak economic outlook in the euro zone may continue to weigh on the euro, and strong U.S. economic data may also fuel the prospect of another U.S. interest rate hike this year, further weighing on the euro. Hedge funds' views on the euro have reached their most pessimistic level since the beginning of the year, and analysts have been lowering their year-end forecasts for the euro. The median forecast sees the euro falling to $1.09 against the dollar by the end of the year, compared with $1.12 previously.
At the same time, U.S. inflation accelerated in August, reversing a downward trend in recent months, which may prompt the Federal Reserve to consider further raising interest rates later this year.
Most economists expect the Fed to raise interest rates at least one more time, and that Fed policymakers will signal fewer rate cuts next year.

The HDR Problem
Something that's been bothering me for a long time now is how little media is actually HDR. HDR as a technology is revolutionary, but I can count the number of games and movies that actually use it on one hand.
In case you don't know, for the longest time, we have been enjoying our media on SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) screens, which, by scientific measure, is represented by two things:
1) An 8-bit color channel video signal 2) Pixels that can output 16.7 million individual colors
Recently, a lot of media has since upgraded to the HDR standard (High Dynamic Range), which is denoted by a 10-bit color channel signal and pixels that output 1.07 billion colors. This is a massive upgrade because, when properly leveraged, you can make a screen's output image look exponentially more photorealistic without actually increasing the number of physical pixels.
Now the issue with this is that, just because media is encoded with a 10-bit color video signal does not mean it's HDR. You can have regular SDR content that looks like SDR content encoded with a 10-bit signal. BUT, the thing about a 10-bit signal is that SDR screens cannot functionally interpret that data. Regardless of whether or not the media you're playing is SDR or HDR, if it's carried on a 10-bit signal, an SDR screen will output the color incorrectly; it'll make the image look like it got stuck in McDonald's oil fryer for three years.
And that brings us to modern HDR certification. In order for a screen to correctly interpret a 10-bit color signal, it needs to have "HDR10" support. Now, just because a screen has an HDR10 certification does not actually mean the screen is HDR. All that it really means is that it is capable interpreting a 10-bit color signal without fucking up the output image. In order for a screen to actually be HDR, it needs pixels that can operate at a certain level of brightness. This brightness is measured in a unit called knits. Generally speaking, more knits = better image quality.
The minimum level of knits for a screen to officially qualify as HDR is 400. Now, typically, screens that are actually HDR will havesomething called a Vesa Certification, which is measured in increments of 100. These increments represent how many knits the screen can output. So, for example, a screen that is "Vesa Certified HDR 800" means it outputs color at at least 800 knits in its default mode of operation.
Now, the thing is is that, in order to actually see HDR content with an HDR image, you need at least 400 knits. Most HDR10 screens do not output at 400 knits. If they did, they would not be HDR10; they were would be Vesa Certified. And this is the big crux of the issue. Most people do not know this, so they just get HDR10 screens thinking they are HDR. And because actual HDR support is expensive, most manufacturers take advantage of the fact most people don't know any better. They are abusing what is essentially a placebo, because people just don't know any better and can't tell the difference.
And that's why so little media is actually, truly, HDR; the vast majority people don't know any better, and they don't actually have screens that support it. Most game developers and movie producers simply don't know themselves or don't bother because so few people will actually be able to notice.

In the third quarter of 2022, revenue was $1,028 million, a decrease of 9% on a reported basis, or a decrease of 4% excluding the unfavorable impact of foreign exchange rates, compared with the third quarter of 2021.
Pet Health revenue was $471 million, a decrease of 11% on a reported basis or a decrease of 7% excluding the unfavorable impact from foreign exchange rates, with a 4% increase from price in the quarter. The Advantage® Family of products contributed $101 million, representing a 17%, or $15 million, decline on a reported basis, and 13% decline excluding the unfavorable impact of foreign exchange rates. Seresto contributed $43 million, representing a 19%, or $8 million, decline on a reported basis and 14% decline excluding the unfavorable impact for foreign exchange rates. For the third quarter, excluding the unfavorable impact of foreign exchange rates, volume declines as a result of worsening global economic conditions impacting parasiticide products in Europe and U.S. retail channels as well as competitive pressure on certain parasiticide products, were partially offset by growth in our global pain portfolio.
Farm Animal revenue was $545 million, a decrease of 7% on a reported basis or flat excluding the unfavorable impact from foreign exchange rates, with a 3% increase from price. For the third quarter, excluding the unfavorable impact of foreign exchange rates, increased demand for poultry products and strength in the aqua portfolio was offset by supply constraints of certain U.S. cattle vaccines and a decline for swine in international markets, particularly in Asia.
Contract Manufacturing revenue was $12 million, a decrease of 43% or 36% when excluding the unfavorable impact from foreign exchange rates, driven primarily by the sale of manufacturing sites to TriRx.
Reported and adjusted gross profit was $556 million, or 54.1% of revenue in the third quarter of 2022. Gross profit as a percent of revenue declined 150 bps on a reported basis and 160 bps on an adjusted basis, primarily driven by inflation and unfavorable product mix, partially offset by productivity efforts across our manufacturing footprint and improved price.
Total operating expense was $376 million for the third quarter of 2022. Marketing, selling and administrative expenses decreased 13% to $298 million, and research and development expenses decreased 17% to $78 million. The decrease in total operating expenses was primarily driven by disciplined cost management across the business, cost savings realized as a result of 2021 restructuring activities, increases in R&D productivity, lower promotional spend and the impact of foreign exchange rates, partially offset by higher legal expenses.
Asset impairment, restructuring, and other special charges were $26 million in the third quarter of 2022, compared to $111 million in the third quarter of 2021. Charges recorded in the third quarter of 2022 primarily related to costs associated with the implementation of new systems, programs, and processes due to the integration of Bayer Animal Health. The integration go-live has been accelerated from mid-year 2023 to early in the second quarter of 2023.
Reported net interest expense of $60 million in the third quarter of 2022 was flat in comparison to the third quarter of 2021. The impact of the partial repayment of the company’s senior notes in April 2022 was offset by the impact of rate increases on variable rate debt and debt extinguishment losses recorded upon the retirement of a portion of the company’s Term Loan B. Adjusted net interest expense was $58 million, or a decline of $2 million compared to the third quarter of 2021.
The reported effective tax rate decreased to negative 17.1% in the third quarter of 2022 compared to 20.0% in the third quarter of 2021, primarily driven by the jurisdictional location of Elanco profits. The adjusted effective tax rate decreased from 23.5% in the third quarter of 2021 to 16.7% in the third quarter of 2022, primarily driven by the jurisdictional location of Elanco profits.
Net loss for the third quarter of 2022 was $49 million and $(0.10) per diluted share on a reported basis, compared with a net loss of $104 million and $(0.21) per diluted share for the same period in 2021. On an adjusted basis, net income for the third quarter of 2022 was $96 million, a 3% increase as compared to the third quarter of 2021, or $0.20 per diluted share, a 5% increase compared with the same period in 2021.
Adjusted EBITDA was $205 million in the third quarter of 2022, a decrease of 3% compared to the third quarter of 2021. Adjusted EBITDA as a percent of revenue was 19.9% compared with 18.7% for the third quarter of 2021, an increase of 120 basis points.
Working Capital and Balance Sheet
Cash flow from operations was $189 million in the third quarter of 2022 compared to $89 million in the third quarter of 2021. The increase in cash from operations in the third quarter of 2022 reflects a lower reported net loss and the benefit of a net $73 million cash interest rate swap settlement. The settlement provided a cash benefit in the third quarter of 2022 that will negatively impact operating cash flow over the next four years as this cash acceleration reverses.
As of September 30, 2022, Elanco’s net leverage ratio was 5.2x adjusted EBITDA, a decrease of 0.1x compared to June 30, 2022, driven by lower net debt and better adjusted EBITDA. Elanco expects net leverage to be between 5.2x and 5.3x adjusted EBITDA at year end.

Elanco is reducing and tightening its full year revenue guidance range by approximately $100 million at the midpoint to reflect worsening macroeconomic and environmental pressures compared to its expectations in August, including the continued strength of the U.S. dollar, economic impacts from China’s continued COVID-19 lockdowns and the impact of the global economic slowdown on Europe and U.S. pet retail markets. For the full year 2022, the unfavorable impact of foreign exchange rates is expected to be approximately $225 million, or 5%, compared to 2021, an incremental $20 million compared to August guidance. The company has updated its guidance for reported net income, adjusted EBITDA, reported EPS and adjusted EPS to reflect the expected impact of the strengthening U.S. dollar and reduction in revenue.

The risk profiles of post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) have not been well characterized in multi-national settings with appropriate controls. We leveraged electronic health record (EHR) data from 277 international hospitals representing 414,602 patients with COVID-19, 2.3 million control patients without COVID-19 in the inpatient and outpatient settings, and over 221 million diagnosis codes to systematically identify new-onset conditions enriched among patients with COVID-19 during the post-acute period. Compared to inpatient controls, inpatient COVID-19 cases were at significant risk for angina pectoris (RR 1.30, 95% CI 1.09–1.55), heart failure (RR 1.22, 95% CI 1.10–1.35), cognitive dysfunctions (RR 1.18, 95% CI 1.07–1.31), and fatigue (RR 1.18, 95% CI 1.07–1.30). Relative to outpatient controls, outpatient COVID-19 cases were at risk for pulmonary embolism (RR 2.10, 95% CI 1.58–2.76), venous embolism (RR 1.34, 95% CI 1.17–1.54), atrial fibrillation (RR 1.30, 95% CI 1.13–1.50), type 2 diabetes (RR 1.26, 95% CI 1.16–1.36) and vitamin D deficiency (RR 1.19, 95% CI 1.09–1.30). Outpatient COVID-19 cases were also at risk for loss of smell and taste (RR 2.42, 95% CI 1.90–3.06), inflammatory neuropathy (RR 1.66, 95% CI 1.21–2.27), and cognitive dysfunction (RR 1.18, 95% CI 1.04–1.33). The incidence of post-acute cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions decreased across time among inpatient cases while the incidence of cardiovascular, digestive, and metabolic conditions increased among outpatient cases. Our study, based on a federated international network, systematically identified robust conditions associated with PASC compared to control groups, underscoring the multifaceted cardiovascular and neurological phenotype profiles of PASC.

With Connor being an adult with the golden trio were kids, did he know about Logan hitting them (or at least Roman)? Thought about Connor being a good big bro because he took the boys camping then remembered the physical abuse that occurred when he was old enough to at least try to intervene and couldn't decide what I thought. I get that he was also a victim so it just made me all round sad
I suspect he would have known, anon, yes, especially given the fact Shiv brought it up so casually in 2.01 in front of everyone and nobody at the table so much as blinked.
It's a really complicated situation generally, because the show's made pretty clear that Connor isn't disentangled from Logan's abuse himself, even as a 55 year old man. Yes, he has agency and can make his own choices, but he's still financially dependent on his father, and Logan having such enormous social and political power gives him this sort of crushing weight that no one, least of all his children, can ever entirely escape.
It feels pretty believable to me that Connor wouldn't step in, especially given Logan's emotional abuse is insidious, encompassing and, most importantly, normalised, while the physical abuse is signalled to have been infrequent (and both Brian and Kieran have said so in interviews too), and Connor wouldn't always have been around to see the ins and outs of it between college and adult life, and you've got an environment where intervening isn't necessarily a clear path. I mean, gosh, even adding to that, I think Connor's depicted as the most conflict adverse of the Roy's and even as a bit of a peacekeeper, which further complicates how he'd likely respond in a situation that turned violent.
In a lot of ways, your ask has made me think a lot about how during Kendall's intervention in 3.09, Connor's direct request of Kendall wasn't that he get help like Shiv's and Roman's was (although I do think that's what he wanted too, of course), it was that Kendall stop going after their father. A part of that's obviously tied to wanting Logan in a surer place so that he can try and use him as political leverage, but I think it also indicates the way Connor thinks when it comes to the family and how to avoid their father's abuse.
I think in Connor's mind, standing up to their father causes more pain, more distress, more trouble and more pathways to abuse, whereas disarming, rolling over, letting Logan have his way is what keeps everything secure and safe and 'loving'. If you fall in line, Dad takes care of you, and you don't get hurt, and the more I've thought about it, the more I've thought that Connor making that direct request of Kendall was likely the way Connor thought the situation - including Kendall's issues - would resolve.
If Kendall stopped trying to kill Dad, Dad would inevitably forgive him and bring him back into the fold, and then things would be better. After all, to Connor, Kendall at his most vulnerable has always been after these attempted coups when their father shut him out - the failed vote of no confidence and Kendall's relapse in 1.07, the failed bearhug and the scene at Shiv's wedding reception in 1.10, and then the press conference and - - well, the whole of s3.
I think there's probably a part of Connor that associates Kendall's issues as stemming from being kicked out of the nest and not able to survive the fall, and that he thinks telling his brother to stop - to stay in the nest - is the way everything gets better and the way Kendall stays safe.
In that sense, I think stepping in probably doesn't even occur to Connor (after all, it's likely no one did it for him), and that he focused when they were kids on picking up the pieces and telling them to stop and to behave. To listen to Dad and be good and not question him or talk back, and that that, to him, was his own way of trying to protect them, his own way of trying to teach them a type of survivalism that's kept him going. He wanted to keep them safe, and I doubt he was even aware that it was in a way that ultimately made him complicit in their abuse.

The risk profiles of post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) have not been well characterized in multi-national settings with appropriate controls. We leveraged electronic health record (EHR) data from 277 international hospitals representing 414,602 patients with COVID-19, 2.3 million control patients without COVID-19 in the inpatient and outpatient settings, and over 221 million diagnosis codes to systematically identify new-onset conditions enriched among patients with COVID-19 during the post-acute period. Compared to inpatient controls, inpatient COVID-19 cases were at significant risk for angina pectoris (RR 1.30, 95% CI 1.09–1.55), heart failure (RR 1.22, 95% CI 1.10–1.35), cognitive dysfunctions (RR 1.18, 95% CI 1.07–1.31), and fatigue (RR 1.18, 95% CI 1.07–1.30). Relative to outpatient controls, outpatient COVID-19 cases were at risk for pulmonary embolism (RR 2.10, 95% CI 1.58–2.76), venous embolism (RR 1.34, 95% CI 1.17–1.54), atrial fibrillation (RR 1.30, 95% CI 1.13–1.50), type 2 diabetes (RR 1.26, 95% CI 1.16–1.36) and vitamin D deficiency (RR 1.19, 95% CI 1.09–1.30). Outpatient COVID-19 cases were also at risk for loss of smell and taste (RR 2.42, 95% CI 1.90–3.06), inflammatory neuropathy (RR 1.66, 95% CI 1.21–2.27), and cognitive dysfunction (RR 1.18, 95% CI 1.04–1.33). The incidence of post-acute cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions decreased across time among inpatient cases while the incidence of cardiovascular, digestive, and metabolic conditions increased among outpatient cases. Our study, based on a federated international network, systematically identified robust conditions associated with PASC compared to control groups, underscoring the multifaceted cardiovascular and neurological phenotype profiles of PASC.
