I want to look up what the ending of the final draft is for Alan Wake but im half nervous it’ll remove some of the mystery left that I loved from the first ending

I have been listening to "Servant of evil" a bit lately and I've thought about a little base for a velvet and vox twins/siblings AU. I still need to work on it but it might be my most thought out AU do far (that I've actually openly shared).
Vox canonically died in like the 1950's and we don't really know velvets death date, but I've seen someone say that she probably died around the 2000's or 2010's ish. In this AU they were born in the 1940's and died around the late 2000's early 2010's.
They were born in London to an almost-famous couple, a fashion model mother who later also started blogging her modeling journey on the internet and a tv host and sometimes-part-time-actor father.
Sometime in the later 1980's their father wanted them all to move to America, but the mother was strongly against it, since she had build her entire career in London and wasn't about to give it up at it's peak. They had a big argument that ended in a divorce and split custody over vox and vel. Vel stayed with their mother and vox went with their father to America. Vox and Vel still kept In contact and send each other messages and kept each other updated on what their parents were doing. Both of them later got into their respective parents' jobs, velvet becoming a fashion model and designer and vox a known tv host. Though their ways kinda parted when they became adults, they still texted from Time to time and vox followed velvets blog about her life as a model and designer, and velvet watched vox's shows whenever she could.
(I don't have much of an idea as to how they both would die in this AU, but i think it would be funny to make them die in a similar way. Like, a light on set falling on vox and a light on stage falling on velvet, both during a show. I think I wanna make vox die a few years before velvet, maybe 5 or so years before her. )
After they both die and find each other again, not recognizing each other at first but then quickly connecting the dots of their behavior and appearance, they both start to climb up the ranks to become overlords, later together with val which vel only tolerates because he makes vox happy after the old ass radio fucker went and broke his heart and because she's a good twin sister, but they never reveal their relationship as siblings to anyone, not even val. They know that hell is cruel and any kind of affection will be used against you in some way, so they keep it a secret. Not really hard considering their bickering and insulting each other which, from afar, makes it seem like they barely tolerate each other. That couldn't be farther from the truth though, they'd both happily risk their life to protect the other from harm.
The AU itself doesn't have much to do with the song but I imagine Vox's love for vel in this to be just as strong as lens love for Rin is in this song. And the song makes me wish for so much more vox and vel content in s2, i need to see their relationship up close. They have such power duo potential and I hope it won't be wasted.

Shiguang dai li ren/Link Click thoughts
Spoiler season 2
I needed to take a deep breath after watching the last episode of season 2. Too many questions, too many theories: my head was and is at full speed. The whole season was hell of a ride, September 22th has to be a national holiday for Shuguang dai li ren fans 😭 (yes I’m a drama queen)
Establishing strict rules that should never be crossed otherwise terrible consequences would occur, the cliffhanger of saison 1 open the door to a large amount of questions. Thus, season 2 begins with a promise of trials and tribulations.
Through out the episodes we are the witness of massive ups and downs with a frenetic rhythm: it’s an absolute emotional roller coster for the viewers 😭. The unbearable tension reached its peak when we found out Lu guang is from the futur and he’s trying to change the past at all cost.
At the last minutes of episode 12 when we see the blood on his shirt, I don’t think it’s after being stab in S1 (he wouldn’t be so calm) it means it’s directly after Cheng Xiaoshi death in his real timeline ( bro didn’t even try to live 00.3s without CSX😭)
Despite of everything LG taught us, he broke the rules. We were aware of the rules through LG statement but now that we know he is an unreliable character maybe those rules aren’t completely true? For example the 12 hours rules (if so why would he lie to CSX?)
LG was also a time traveler: since when did he has the power?
He either had it before the new timeline - I don’t think so- or he gain it when CSX die in his arms. (Which imply futur-LG no longer has CSX power in the new time line). I think it’s the second solution.
We see LG going back to the past, is it the only time he did so? If not, how many time did he uses it?
To my mind he only used it one time. The way he feels guilty when he did it shows that it’s not something he is used to do.
What’s in the picture ?
I think he went back in time either at his first encounter with CSX or at the overseas trip : either way the LG we have known since S1 has to be LG from the futur.
We will learn more this overseas trip in s3 for sure (as well as CSX and LG past, I imagine a lot of flash back in s3)
Qiao Ling acquired Li Tianxi’s ability then how is she gonna use it ?How would she confront LG about it?
I think she would be chocked with a lot of empathy and understanding toward LG. She might combine her ability with LG in order to prevent CSX death…
Liu Xiao is clearly a new threat alongside Li Tianchen : Does he has power too? Is he kind of a time line agent or something ?😩 Will he combine his supposed power with Li Tianchen ? Now that he lost his sister and left his phone on the bench I think he has nothing to lose.
Moreover, how will CSX react to his non-death news ?
I feel like LG wouldn’t admit his act directly to CSX and CSX is going to found out through someone else. Will he be :
- Furious at LG (he prevent him from saving the village whereas CSX was deeply affected by it)
- Enraged at LG but accept his destiny
- Mad at LG but try to help LG to save himself
Whatever the answer above, I think CSX will be extremely angry at LG and his impulsivity might put him even more in danger.
LG is clearly willing to do everything and anything for CSX’s sake. However, all the event in S2 (twins etc + him being stab) is unknown to him bc it didn’t happen in his original time line. Lu Guang said something like “event seems to be changing ”
What if, at the very end, he goes back (one last time) to a past where he didn’t even meet CSX? If saving him means to never met him in the first place I think he would.
(Without LG in CSX’s life everything we saw wouldn’t happen ..?) (it’s super sad tho💀)
Whatever the end of it, LG might sacrifice himself for the life of CSX.
All in all, Lu guang is gay, we must protect CSX, QL is an adorable bad ass and we’re all going to suffer.
One last straw: LG keeps the date of CSX death as his phone password the same way Edouard Elric kept the date of his mother death on his watch. They both keep it as a reminder of their goal and the lost of their love ones 😃🔫
PS: I need to watch S1 again as well as S2

The bar scene from Love's a game (wanna play?)!
My favourite scene to write in my Donna/Ben thesis!!
One night, unexpectedly, they end up squeezed together knees touching on a leather couch in a bar. The restaurant they were supposed to be eating at had been unexpectedly booked out by a Swedish crime writer convention. This is a key scene in the fic and I wanted to start it off by unexpectedly changing the setting for the characters. I love all the random conventions that always seemed to be happening in the Great Northern so I included this as a reason for the restaurant being fully booked. No idea as to why I picked Swedish crime writers.
She’s often curious about what people think when they see her and Ben together. I wrote this fic on the assumption that the paternity stuff wasn't known outside of the Hayward/Horne families so it gave their relationship this ambiguous quality that was fun to play with. Do people think they're family? Or man and his younger wife/mistress? How do they both feel about that?
He wants to buy her love she realizes as she stirs her drink. That’s what all this is about – the job, the dinners, the apartment. It’s all he knows how to do. At this point Ben has a huge amount of financial control over Donna - he's responsible for her job, her living arrangements and later on some of her clothes. In canon Ben is someone who uses money to get what he wants and this is no different here. He starts off wanting to be a father to Donna but he doesn't know how so he resorts to using money to get what he wants and Donna accepts this because she feels he owes her for basically destroying her family. Of course it leads her to becoming entangled with him in a way that is very difficult for her to get out of
“Did you try to buy her as well?” She leans over to whisper in his ear and watches as his cheeks flush ever so slightly. “Laura.” He doesn’t say anything. Up until this point they had both avoided talking about Laura so I wanted to get them into a situation where their inhibitions were lowered to finally bring her up. The second half of s2 has many weaknesses however the worst in my mind is the way it ignores Laura, especially as it would have added some depth to this plot.
“I mean it’s a little creepy right? You knowing her when she was a little girl and then…Her, my mother, is there any woman in Twin Peaks you haven’t slept with?” Drag him Donna!! I so wanted something like this to happen in canon and of course it never did. I wrote Donna as always having this low-key contempt for Ben. She knows exactly what kind of person he is and the tragedy of it is she still gets suckered in.
“I don’t think any of us could have helped her.” Ben Horne is a lying liar who lies to everyone including himself. Which leads to him telling another lie later on in the fic when he says that there's a good chance he isn't Donna's father, which again, is to himself as much as it is to Donna.
Besides any potential shared blood, Laura is really the only thread that connects them. I just really like this line. Laura is the one, after all.

8 GET KNOW ME BETTER/CATCH UP WITH ME QUESTIONS
tagged by @greyhavenisback. thanks love! <3
.
RELATIONSHIP STATUS: currently single and honestly mostly very content with that, i just. miss kissing. bc kissing is nice. so, kind mutuals, kiss-o-gram for cassidy when? lol.
FAVOURITE COLOUR: petrol/gasoline tones. or the less ostentatious answer of purples and blues and greens.
SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD: justin timberlake's cry me a river bc me and my fourteen-year-old put it on about an hour ago bc he was trying to argue that bringing sexy back is a better song (it's not and i will take zero criticism). i'm not usually a fan of JT's music—he's better at acting imo—but that tune is just *chef's kiss* and a proper classic early 2000s BOP!
LAST SONG I LISTENED TO: just watched some of the brilliant twin peaks: a limited event series (2017) as i'm currently nearing the end of a rewatch of the entire run (og s1+s2, the FWWM film, and The Return). it was ep2 and the song that's performed as the credits roll is shadow by chromatics, so. that.
THREE FAVOURITE FOODS: i could never! plus most of my faves i can't eat anymore because of my evil MCAS. but three faves today? 1. gruyère cheese on sourdough toast with lashings of worcestershire sauce (which i ate for lunch earlier today) 2. fry's turkish delight which i used to think tasted like perfume when i was a nipper but love now. i had one the other day for the first time in ages and i want MORE. 3. spicy phở, nom nom. although i now have to make my own bastardized version bc there are soooooo many vegetables i can no longer eat, grr. still good tho!
LAST THING I GOOGLED: 182 centimeters in inches bc my brain seems to live in the 1970s, pre-metrication, even tho i was born in 1980. i think its maybe bc it's what my folx used? and even tho i was taught metric in school it just never stuck, ha. anyway, the reason is i'm looking for a second-hand sofa bed on ebay and i live in a basement flat so correct dimensions are A Big Thing.
DREAM TRIP: anywhere not-warm with mountains and forests. maybe rural germany or romania? i just want to breathe in the mist and lay down in the damp earth until moss and lichen begin to grow over me tbh. think castle lecter in lithuania, where hannibal grew up... tbh, my chronic illnesses and now shitty mobility means i prolly won't actually get to go abroad ever again *sobs* BUT i believe one can and should always dream :)
ANYTHING YOU WANT RIGHT NOW: i'll take a body that works properly pls! i'm going for a meal and then to a peaky blinders ballet (!) tomorrow eve and instead of feeling pure excitement for it, i'm mostly anxious tbh which, bleugh. also, i'd like to hang out at home with my best mate bc i was too ill for us to catch up over christmastime, meaning i've not seen him in over a year as we live at opposite ends of the country :( but he's hopefully coming to stay with us at easter, so yay.

what are your thoughts on the short lived live action netflix winx show queen?
i personally couldn’t get past the outfits 😔
I loooooove questions like this that let me ramble about my interests outside of dc, also sorry it took so long to post. I hope you're still around to see it <33
Okay, so I vividly remember when the news that a live-action Winx was coming, and everybody was soooooo stoked (including me), and there was the craziest surge of fancast tweets ever. Like, I literally fought with someone on Twitter who fancasted Madelaine Petsch as Bloom, and I was like...well, no! Either way, the role went to Abigail Cowen, who actually plays Dorcas in 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina', which is a part of the Riverdale universe that Madelaine Petsch is also in because, well, she's in Riverdale. And then K-pop stans were fighting over whether or not Twice's Momo or Blackpink's Lisa would be a better Musa; it was just a crazy day. Understandably so; it's always a big deal when beloved animated shows are adapted into something more real. I personally was jumping for joy.
And then the promo pics were released, and everybody very quickly went, "wtf?" (including me)
Good god, those outfits were so fucking awful. No, they weren't, actually, they were pretty normal, but when you take into account the source content, it was actually pretty fucking bad. That was only a part of the outrage, though; a lot of it came from the whitewashing of Flora's character, which actually wasn't whitewashing but a completely new character named "Terra." Which. Is so...! they ended up introducing Flora later, but I feel like that was due in part to the outrage because, similarly to Bratz, Winx was partially so popular due to its diverse range of characters and cutting out the Latina character to replace her with a white one with the EXACT SAME POWERS is absurd.
Also, they whitewashed Musa, a fully Chinese character. The actress that plays her is part Singaporean, which, yes, is Asian, but they're not interchangeable. Even crazier is she's mostly European and very white-passing, so it's like, uhhhhh.
I do love the dark-skin representation with Aisha, tho, like they ate that ONE thing.
Okay, so now for MY thoughts. I don't hate the show, not in the slightest. I only watched season 1, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the only reason I didn't watch s2 is because when it came out, I didn't have the steam to watch something entirely new, and I ended up just forgetting about it. I don't think the show is bad; I just think that when you remember the name it's attached to, it becomes very, very bleak in comparison to its source material.
There's been a very big trend within the past ten or so years where big media companies are "rebooting" childhood favorites but with darker and more mature plots, which was cool the first couple of times, like Riverdale s1, absolute gold (before it devolved into whatever tf it became) and the early seasons of chilling adventures of Sabrina. It was something new and fresh like Twin Peaks meets your beloved animated characters from when you were kids, but it very quickly started to feel like it was an easy way to gain an audience. Fate: The Winx Saga could've been something good had it not been attached to the Winx brand. But then it would've run the risk of failing (which it did anyway) instead of being an overnight smash hit solely because of the namesake. Even if people hate watched it, those are still views, and those company execs get their paychecks.
Like I said, I'd have no qualms about it if it was an original series, and oftentimes I forgot that it wasn't one. But that's the problem, it wasn't.
Making live-action versions of cartoons will always prove to be difficult because those cartoons aren't necessarily meant to translate into real life; that's the whole point. They're not real. They're different and original and have special powers, unrealistic proportions, and weird stances!! When those cartoons are made into life action shows, they try to make them as natural as possible bc, duh, a real person doing those things would look dumb as hell, but also, those shows were enjoyed because of all of those little things that don't translate well in real life. At least that's why I enjoyed them.
I feel like I'd be doing a disservice to even compare the shows because, in my head, they're not even remotely similar. Like it was beyond "making it darker," it really was just an entire show; there was even some continuity between the Archie comics and the bizarre acid trip that was Riverdale. I know I probably sound like a broken record saying how drastically different it was, but the laundry list of differences is so insanely long.
I've rewatched the original Winx many, many times. I know the pilot episode like the back of my hand and all of the major plot points of the first few seasons (bc I abandoned it once that 3d animation came into play). I supposed this is how people who watch movie adaptations of books feel, pointing out details that are "minor" but don't feel minor when you know the source material so well.
Here's a list of differences I can think of off the top of my head from the first season alone because I didn't watch the second in its entirety, so this is just from my understanding:
alfea is in Solaria, which...ughhh, don't piss me off. It's located in Magix in the OG series, along with the Cloud Tower (school for witches) and the Red Fountain (school for specialists), which, btw, were both axed as far as I know.
Witches are kinda sorta a thing? Instead of witches going to a whole different school and having their own unique powers, they live in hiding and are called blood witches because they blood bend.
There are no Trix, just Beatrix. Who is a fairy and an annoying evil one at that?
They are all British. Everyone is British. I don't understand why Bloom is the token American. I don't understand why she is the sole American to go to that school; it doesn't make sense to me in the slightest. Like, if it's a school for all fairies, then...why? And if it was only for British fairies, then...why?
Sky and Stella date, there is so Brandon; in fact, most of the specialists have been axed. (Helia plz come back to me, bae. I took you for granted last time)
Obviously, there's no flora until season 2...which. Don't pmo.
Ummm, the whole "the burned plot"? Which is interesting, I'll admit.
No transformations except that weak ass one they had in s2 that I saw on Twitter and closed the app in a fit of rage
Stella is a bitch?????? She's literally the definition of a girl's best friend, fashion icon, willing to die for the people she loves, and big golden retriever energy. And they just. They made her so awful. She does have a redemption arc, but it's just so...
I can't think of any more off the top of my head, but those are the ones that really stuck with me well over a year after I've seen it.
so what does this mean? This means...well, idk what this means. Like I said previously, the show, if it was standalone, would be absolutely fire i think, but the moment they attached the Winx name to it, it suddenly had really big shoes to fill, and it just couldn't do it, not with those major changes. So many beloved aspects of the original show were taken out for a bunch of new things to be added in, making it feel like something completely new.
If the show wasn't advertised as a Winx show and someone approached me saying, "Hey, ro, if you like Winx, you'll like this show because it's like a darker, more mature version of it." I'd be interested. But the moment it became "Hey, ro, have you seen the new winx show?" it became something else, something with expectations, which often doesn't fare well for live adaptations.
Sorry, this got so long, and sorry I took so long to post it. I hope this jargon made sense, I got carried away.
tldr: I fw it when I forget it's Winx

Anime Update V3 3
Vinland Saga S2 - Arnheid went to see her husband in captivity. Wrong move. Gardar used her presence there to lure one of the guards to them and then bite out the guy's throat. No shitting, this was probably the most graphic thing I've seen depicted on this show! He convinces Arnheid to cut the ropes binding him so he can kill all the other guards and make his escape. Back at the farm, a talk between Thorfinn and Einar further establishes Thorfinn's desire to never kill or resort to violence in any conflict ever again, and to find some way of sufficiently and significantly atoning for every life he took, like creating a place where "no one needs a sword." Einar sas that such a place must be beyond man's reach, prompting Thorfinn to finally remember it: Vinland. He needs to go find Vinland!
Hunter x Hunter - After Killua ends up not only sparing Ikalgo but saving him, telling him he's cool and that they might've been friends under better conditions, he goes ahead and becomes the target of two aquatic Chimera Ant siblings (with one of them voiced by LittleKuriboh) as they throw fish darts at a special board that project the darts to skewer different parts of Killua's body, and it really seemed like Killua was a goner for a while, even after he turned the tables and decapitated the twins (which they're still alive after, don't worry!), he's at risk of dying until, wouldn't you know it, Ikalgo comes along to save his life! Some good deeds do get rewarded! The other episode I watched focused largely on Gon's sketchy alliance with Meleoron, who claims he wants to kill Meruem for having killed his father figure, and we see Meruem's off playing games with humanity. And I mean literally, he is challenging humans to different human games after learning the rules in record time, beating them, and killing them. And now he's to play Gungi...against a blind girl??? And the current ED credits suggests this goes somewhere pretty big.
SHUFFLE! - Summer is apparently fast approaching in this anime's world, which seems so foreign to me when we're currently in the midst of a cold winter season. The students all study for their final exams and undertake them, with Sia getting some help from Rin. There's also talk of rainy days and memories of when Sia met Rin.
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works - The grand finale looms ahead, so you know what that means - the Rin/Shirou sex episode!
KonoSuba - This episode just kept changing gears on me, setting itself up to be about Darkness wanting to join Kazuma's party but Kazuma being resistant to her because he can see how masochistic she is and doesn't want another weird girl to put up with, then it centers on Kazuma learning the "Steal" ability from this white haired Yuffie Kisaragi-esque thief girl (and Kazuma can compulsively only swipe panties off from girls because of course he would), and then out of fucking nowhere, flying cabbages start migrating towards the civilization and all warriors are called to fight them so that they can be eaten, complete with casual and silly exposition on this little harvest season from Aqua, and Darkness shielding other knights from the cabbages' blows because she loves getting hit repeatedly. So Kazuma ends up accepting Darkness for a harvest job well done.
Symphogear XV - Episode 2 again does this thing where we're at one point in time but then flash back to what happened to lead up to it, only this time the past timeframe was last episode's present, where at least we're treated to some peak Kirika/Shirabe goodness, and they even manage to get the better of one of their new adversaries. S.O.N.G has taken in the mysterious Annunaki mummy they found in Antarctica, and Fudou is very displeased with his son and his workers as of late. Then Tsubasa and Maria do a joint concert that, as I'd expected, gets attacked by another new enemy and geezus, this psychotic freak actually managed to put Carol to shame in the heinous department, creating several casualties and even butchering an innocent child right in front of Tsubasa. She escapes justice for this and Tsubasa feels like a failure, as though she just lost Kanade all over again. Times are certainly getting bleak!
Eureka Seven - While Holland continues to grapple with his self loathing and how horribly abusive and irresponsible he'd been with Renton, the moment of dread comes when Renton opening up to his new dad Charles and outing himself as Adroc Thurston's child gets Charles to start prying more about the Nirvash and how things were like with Gekko State, and luring Renton right into a military sky assault where he comes clean about him and Ray being mercenaries for the Federation out to destroy Gekko State, and Renton's absolute devastation is itself devastating to watch. He seemed so close to a healthy home environment and a real family he could live peacefully with only to have the illusion broken, which conveys to him that no matter where he goes, warfare and his prior involvement in it will always follow him. Hence the episode's title being "Paradise Lost." Ray and Charles, to their credit, still love Renton like their own child and give him the choice whether or not to leave them. And he does.
Gintama - None this week.

wait sorry idk if i should ask here but ur tje twin peaks person to me . is there like a particular order to watch twin peaks in? is there any point where it gets bad and one should stop watching?
hi! so the correct order is s1, s2, fire walk with me 1992, the missing pieces 2014 and s3.
some people say that it gets bad halfway through season 2, around 2x09 (although it depends for each person), and that you should skip that second half of s2 and go straight to fire walk with me and not watch anything past that either. i've also heard of people who haven't watched the show and have only watched fire walk with me.
personally, i think all of it is worth it, i really love the second half of s2 and i specially really really love s3, i also think you should check out the secret diary of laura palmer by jennifer lynch, as i think it's an incredible book that really adds a lot to laura's characterization, it really is essencial, for me.
but anyway yeah at the end of the day it's up to you, i recommend starting with s1 and watching for as long as it's worth it for you personally!

HI!!! I’ve seen a few new movies but I haven’t really felt like posting about them.
1. Nope by Jordan Peele. Excellent film. Requires another watch before I can really put into words what I watched.
2. Seeking a friend for the end of the world. Very fun and endearing film. I love Keira Knightley forever and always 🫶
3. The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Not bad! Was fun and an easy watch. My son made me watch it about a million times so Im really tired of it and never want to watch it ever again. 5/10?
4. Dunkirk. This requires a second watch. I felt like I couldn’t follow the story line as it was jumping to multiple characters perspectives and I just had a hard time. 2nd watch should do me some good.
That’s it! Now I’m finishing up Vinland Saga S2 and then I’m going to start Twin Peaks!

Finished the first Series of Twin Peaks! Really liked the last episode
- Every single scene in The Red Room was surreal horror at it’s best
- I’d seen the “Meanwhile...” scene a lot on Youtube, but seeing it with the full context still made me feel something that was weird and strange, fuckin’ sick
- The non-Black Lodge scenes were still pretty good, ended as good as they possibly could have (I know some characters live bc they’re in The Return)
- All the flashing lights and film tricks (as well as the repeating rooms) do an amazing job, The Waiting Room well and truly does feel otherworldly in a way that’s hard to describe
- Just overall enjoyed the confusion of trying to navigate a strange place
- Sheryl Lee’s acting was REALLY good
- Good acting all around really
- BOB speaking backwards was spooky
- Doppelganger Coop made a very scary entrance and exit, loved how you saw his shadow on the drapes
- The ending was really good but I can see why some people got mad at how they were left with that ending for like, 25 years.
- How’s Annie?
Enjoyed the first series, for the longest time I thought there were a ton of Red Room/Black Lodge scenes, but, no, it’s just about 3+, tops. The real show is the soap opera connections and plots that unfold that happen due to Laura Palmer’s death and all things connected to it, which is STILL really good and fun.
Just really charming and fun, was never really bored (except for some S2 episodes, can’t be helped)
So! That’s the first part done.
Tomorrow I’m watching Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and the extra “Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces” (90+ minutes of deleted footage from Fire Walk With me), that should be fun, I’ll love blog both

stuff I paused ‘watched twin peaks: fire walk with me’ and purported to nico while we watched it tonight:
- re: bowie. threw me for a loop. I need to give it more time/thought but based off of 1. his being missing and 2. his subsequent vanishing, I’m going to say he’s supposed to be foreshadowing for the “good dale” being stuck in the black lodge and coming out of it Nonsensical
- the blue light is goodness, as embodied by dale cooper. when bob comes into laura’s window, the lights go from off, to a brief flash of red, to blue. repeatedly. this: 1. is demonstrative of the flashing lights on the sheriff's department vehicles. there’s a few instances where laura’s experience of time seems to be disrupted. she sees cooper in her dream (who she never meets in her lifetime, and by the very nature of his job, she could not have crossed paths with in her lifetime)--this is a break in time, and all at once laura is experiencing an assault by bob (one of the many things which would lead up to her death) and the time after it. the rapidly flashing blue/red lights--so reminiscent of the sheriff’s department cars--is giving her an idea of how it will end. she can sense the investigation. she knows about the inquiry into her death before it happens
- on the link between laura and cooper: cooper and laura dream of each other, before they ever “cross paths”. cooper is able to answer albert’s question after describing what he believes this killer’s next victim will be--a high school aged girl, blonde, sexually active, crying out for help--he says in response to “what is she doing right now”, “preparing a large amount of food”. laura sees cooper appearing just at the end of her dream abt the black lodge.  the thing which struck me about their relationship/lack of one is how, on the surface, it appears one sided. there is nothing cooper can really do for laura, and being dead, there is nothing laura can extend to cooper. that said--cooper is breathed into existence by laura. without her death, he would have had no reason to enter twin peaks, to form the relationships he did, to have his experience with the black lodge. everything cooper is, is owed to her (as a character--not as a “person”--agent dale cooper may have existed in universe, sure, but “cooper” does not exist as a character within the narrative of twin peaks without the death of laura palmer--she is the reason for him--she gives him existence, purpose, meaning). thus, with cooper appearing to laura at the beginning of the film (thus proving his existence relative to her) and appearing on his own at the bureau at the beginning of the film (thus giving him an existence with which to bind to her)--laura is doomed from the start. cooper exists, so she must die. there is no cooper without her death and because cooper is, she dies.  she’s doomed, and she knows this, and that’s a good portion of what’s haunting her throughout the film: the inevitability of it, the inescapability of it.

- re: the Laura insisting that Bobby had killed Mike during the drug deal:  “I, too, have been touched by the devilish one. Tattoo on the left shoulder... oh, but when I saw the face of God, I was changed... Took the entire arm off. My name is Mike.” - from Episode Two of the twin peaks show. What I got from this was that Mike was reformed, that he was representative of “goodness”, while Bob was the personification of evil (”Maybe that's all BOB is. The evil that men do” -s2, ep9). This is... an oversimplification, but works generally for what I am describing. The suggestion that Bobby killed Mike (as the symbol of good/rejection of evil), then, implies that there is no hope of reformation in others (Leland): that corruption cannot be deviated from, thus further suggesting that Laura’s fate is inescapable.
- re: the disappearance of the angels: simply, the people turning their backs on Laura. (”You damn hypocrites. You make me sick! Everybody knew she was in trouble but we didn’t do anything. All you good people… You wanna know who killed Laura Palmer? You did! We all did.” -s1, ep4). Laura appearing as an angel in the train car and saving Ronette (undoing her ropes) was her final push: the last remaining thing she could do to help anyone, and which was done because no one had helped her. being able to save ronette, to laura, was a trade she made for her own life.
- re: "Bob, I want all my garmonbozia (pain and sorrow)." In response, BOB held his hand to Leland's stomach wound, causing it to disappear, and then threw a great amount of blood onto the floor. I said that Bob taking his hand to Leland’s stomach wound and causing it to disappear was an indication that the violence of the crime (and subsequently, it’s memory) had been expunged from Leland, such that he couldn’t remember that he was responsible for it. I saw this as an exchange, with Leland, in place of the removal of that memory, getting back his pain and sorrow (which--by asking for it returned--implied he did not have prior to killing Laura--and thus did so unfeelingly, without remorse) and further, demonstrates just how he became so heartbroken following his daughter’s death. His pain and sorrow being restored to him gives rise to his hysteria: dancing with her photo and ignoring the stinging cuts of the glass when the frame breaks, demanding people at the Great Northern dance with him as he weeps...
- the end: the appearance of cooper at laura’s side further solidifies their bond to each other. i’ve already written about how laura gives rise to cooper, but cooper’s whole existence, too, is tinged with laura. he is working for her, by her, toward her. he is trying to discover how she was killed for her, as a service to her life and to her memory. he is the care she did not receive, and the care that she could not have received from him inherently. her smile at the end is a surrender to the helplessness of her situation, laughing at the cruelty of her life, but it is something also tempered with the joy of knowing that cooper follows after her: that he is good and just and kind, and that he is because of her

Read in March
A poor month: i wasn’t into the mood to read anything, and even the pure escapism offered by the sci-fi book i picked wasn’t entertaining.
Books finished:
Educated by Tara Westover ★★★★☆
The Gone World by Tom Swerterlitsch  (science, fiction, thriller, horror) ★★☆☆☆
Still reading:
Permanent record by Edward Snowden (non fiction, memoir)
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë (fiction, classics)
The Horizon is on Fire: Five Russian Poets of the 20th Century: Blok, Akhmatova, Mandelstam, Tsvétaïéva, Brodsky (poetry)
De Brevitate Vitae by Seneca (non fiction, philosophy)
De Vita Beata by Seneca (non fiction, philosophy)
The Fate of the Universe by Jean-Pierre Luminet (non fiction, science)
To read:  To finish what i started would be good enough.

The Riverdale 102(?)-Day Sprint, Day 5: “Chapter Sixty-Six: Tangerine”
The Shankshaw Re-dumb-tion
And here we are again. Weird that of the five episodes I’ve seen so far like 2 or 3 have been from S4, not that it really matters too much. But merely from the fact this is S4 I can immediately deduce: 1) there will be some useless gang war stuff surrounding Archie’s community center, 2) there will be something about the tapes, and 3) there will be more of that tedious flip-flopping with Betty and Archie. I can’t wait for that redheaded block-jawed freak to get ritually sacrificed or killed in WW1 or whatever the hell actually ends up happening in S6. Well, I suppose I’ve put this off long enough. Here goes:
                       *          *          *
This show is doing something to me. I can feel it changing my brain in the same way being kicked repeatedly in the head does. I think I’ve predicted several major plot developments, but it doesn’t matter nothing matters why why why. I am 99% sure the Black Hood was Betty’s dad, although they haven’t outright said as much: interesting that he knew about Betty’s Dark Passenger. Is there some kind of like... inherited condition that gives you one? I should just make a list of every show this one rips off, because Dexter seems like a main inspiration here. Let’s assess the damage of the various subplots:
Archie is continuing to be a vigilante but maaaaybe he’s done for realsies this time? He seemed genuinely sad (or as genuinely sad as that oaf can in this show) when he was tearing up with his mom about it near the end, and he did almost actually kill Dodger... wait shit I just realized that and Fagin are an Oliver Twist reference I am genuinely livid. This show is the equivalent of hitting yourself in the head with a dictionary several dozen times in a row.
Jughead’s subplot is probably the least consequential here, even if it does eventually lead to his 100% fake death. His grandpa was apparently a bastard, but he’s probably dead or something so it doesn’t even matter. Jughead joins a frat in the last few minutes.
Betty has a Dark Passenger! This Dexter subplot is obscenely infuriating, because of Shankshaw Prison (get it? do you get it? do you get how clever the showrunners are?) and also the whole plot being really really dumb. Cult lady says “tangerine” three times and then I guess it makes people believe they’re Betty? Then they try to kill Betty because she’s “dark Betty” in their minds. That’s not how hypnosis works that’s not how any of that works. Whatever. Charles seems a bit detached here, as usual, and the parallels to my beloved Agent Cooper are numerous. He is definitely a serial killer tho.
Veronica Lodge’s subplot is the worst of any of them. She’s up against evil moonshiners run by her dad again, and Hiram is using copyright laws to try to quash her business. Also she has a nightclub or something. She’s supposed to be like 17 or 18. Sure, whatever fine. I was going to issue some unconditional praise because the rivalry between Veronica and Hiram is what Audrey and Ben Horne should have been doing in Twin Peaks S2, but then I realized I was unironically comparing Riverdale to Twin Peaks and I slapped myself in the face in real life.
And last and certainly not least we have Cheryl Blossom. Her actor is just owning how ridiculous this subplot is and it’s honestly a treat to watch. Apparently Mrs. Blossom is like a serial killer? So Cheryl imprisons her in a bunker or something after faking a suicide attempt, and it turns out Mrs. Blossom is jealous of Cheryl spending so much time with her twin brother’s exhumed corpse. The way this was shot and acted screams camp and I love it unironically.
Well, that’s this episode. I hate every character in this show with a burning passion, and I want to do to Archie what most people say they want to do ironically. I want to kick that character down the stairs not out of some kind of love but a hatred that is festering and growing more every day. He’s such a bland protagonist who is moody and brooding and conflicted despite the fact he has literally everything he wants. It’s quite obvious this uncle of his will be evil or something and fine whatever he’ll die pretty soon too probably, since there’s no mention of him in the S5 episode I saw a few days back. I am frothing at the mouth I should probably stop writing. Tomorrow, hopefully I get a more straightforward episode, preferably from the first season...
Tomorrow: “Chapter Ninety-Two: Band of Brothers”...damn.
quick notes
- just by the recap I was immediately right; more gang bs inbound. lovely
- apparently Betty killed her childhood dog? or her dad did and brainwashed her into thinking she did?
- wait actually that’s pointing pretty strongly to him being the man behind the slaughter Black Hood, isn’t it?
- and Jughead’s dad is actually the Hardy Boys author is something
- OH RIGHT Archie’s a vigilante! I hope he gets shot
- and Jughead’s the new ghostwriter! wow! I can’t wait for this subplot to go absolutely nowhere
- VERONICA RUM SUBPLOT how could I forget!
- love how Archie just tells Jughead’s dad/the sheriff (wait wasn’t he supposed to be dead and a gang leader?) he’s the vigilante. Sheriff Jones holds up a picture of the vigilante and says “Is this you” and Archie’s just like “yea lmao”
- right yeah Archie’s mom’s alive. what’s the deal with that? was she dead or was she just divorced in S1?
- hm. fuck. I have some unqualified praise for this show. let me think about it while I finish the episode and maybe I’ll lay it out in the actual write-up
- so Polly Cooper is Jeff the Killer or something? great cool whatever I thought she was just like... really loyal to that cult (which cult? there are so many cults in this one shitty town)
- alright I’m lost here what’s her deal? is she faking this amnesia? I don’t know the context to her character
- also. that is some. ah. quality acting
- HA Hiram’s mom is going to turn him into fertilizer
- OH MY GOD MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE HYPNOSIS with an activation phone call and everything!
- and a finger snap brings you back! just like Captain Underpants! (well technically like negative universe Captain Underpants bc regular Mr. Krupp is turned into CU with a snap. don’t ask why I remember all of this stuff from elementary school books it’s not important)
- wait so is it a magic word that can affect anyone? or is it just certain people with implanted triggers?
- I have a big-brain prediction: it’s just people related to the Cooper family, Betty specifically. We’ve only seen her sister and mom be affected, right? AND Polly attacked the nurse named Betty! the order must be to kill Betty specifically! I am only 8 minutes in and I’ve already figured this out what is wrong with me
- called Hiram’s mom kicking his ass
- “What are you doing picking fights with your daughter? Your father is turning over in his grave.” I know Hiram’s mom is the stereotypical angry Hispanic lady but I like her anyway, simply because Hiram needs to get his ass kicked more
- I swear every 5 minutes one of the 3 leads gets a phone call with dramatic news. it happens literally a dozen times an episode
- SHANKSHAW PRISON ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME I WANT TO MAIM
- The Farm is the name of the cult Polly was in? noted. and apparently it was run by a supervillain who had like... mind-control audio? that’s convenient
- Edgar... I’ve heard that name before. so the Farm’s cult leader guy is dead, and it’s his girlfriend. great. glad there was zero mystery there
- also why does Charles even need Betty’s help? he seems like the most competent member of the cast. he could end Riverdale’s problems in 2 seconds if he cared. what’s his deal? he seems off somehow, not dissimilar to a certain FBI agent I know...
- Forsythe just takes Jughead at his word about them being related? isn’t the whole reason he’s living out in the woods that people are obsessed with him or something? why would he believe some dweeb with a jug for a head?
- OH HA that Julian subplot with Cheryl Blossom is still going on! and Jason is still decaying in the living room! I fucking hate this show
- OH SUICIDE ATTEMPT PLAYED FOR LAUGHS LOVELY
- WHY THE GAS MASK??? WHAT IS GOING OOOOOOON
- ohhh ok no I was sort of wrong Forsyth(e) did write the books but some classmate stole them. sure whatever who cares
- AND MR JONES JUST LETS ARCHIE BE THE VIGILANTE JDBSBHDSBABSB
- and not only does he agree he joins in on the vigilantism! this show sure treats cops like superheroes!
- oh wow no mask or anything? isn’t a mask an integral part of vigilantism?
- Cheryl’s subplot sure does exist! I have no clue what’s going on anymore. was that story about her absorbing her 3rd twin sibling bs?
- gaslight gatekeep girlblossom. that should be the name of this subplot
- and of course Mr. Jones is like “yeah kicking the shit out of people sure is cool isn’t it” and Archie’s just like “yea lmao”. stupid bootlicking show
- huh so it turns out Forsyth(e?) is just a mediocre white guy after all and DuPont is just weird but not a serial killer. ha!
- love how the cult lady just freely tells Betty how the activation phrase works, even if it is a ridiculously stupid explanation
- oh so the name of the episode is the trigger phrase. funny. and nice Candyman reference ya pack of nerds
- wait so is Mr. Jones just dead? that won’t be good for Archie and Jug’s already rocky relationship. also lol what did they expect from that vigilante-ing?
- AHSJSBDBSSDBH Charles is just like “hey Betty what if we did a funny bit where you tried the trigger phrase on yourself? what’d happen then? let’s find out!”
- so... Cheryl’s mom is jealous of Cheryl bc she’s spending quality time with Jason... who is still a rotting corpse. huh
- this is the worst rendition of “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” that I’ve ever heard. how fitting for such a lousy fight scene
- so does Betty have some kind of “dark passenger”? Is she secretly a serial killer or somethimg? will she become Dexter? Is Charles Dexter?
- BETTY HAS A MIND PALACE ANJABAHBAAHBA
- listen I don’t like making fun of kid actors – it’s not their fault. if they’re directed badly they just sink. but Dark Betty’s actor is really really not goof here
- also love how this epic confrontation between Betty and her Dark Passenger is just her saying “killing is bad actually” and her shadow self is like “yea I guess you’re right goodbye forever”
- whenever the camera pans over to Jason and his dumb dead face I always laugh. It has to be intentional right?
- “Archie... honey... why are you sitting in the dark?” except it’s TV show dark, so everyone is perfectly evenly lit
- and only now does Archie feel slightly bad about vigilante-ing. I hate him so much
- and Jason gets a Viking-esque 2nd funeral. how charming
- HA AHAHAHA AND ARCHIE’S DAD’S BROTHER SHOWS UP AS A LAST-SECOND TEASE I hate this show... so much...
- and yet another flash forward to dead Jughead! by Betty’s hand no less!
