One of my favorite trope for Steddie is Steve hunting down Eddie when the kids join Hellfire and giving him a long list of dos and donts.

At first Eddie thinks he’s just being a prick, and worried he’s going to turn the nerds into freaks like him. Especially when he says not to mention drugs in front of Dustin.

But then he starts pulling out lists of monsters that can’t be in campaigns. And like what??? Why can’t he use demagorgons? They were gonna be in the next combat! He’s tempted to ignore the warnings, in fact he’s all set to, but something about Steve’s face when he was laying it all out haunts him. Something so deadly serious about it. So first he decides to test the waters to see if he’s full of shit.

When the session starts, he makes a throwaway comment, “you’re acting like there’s a mindflayer around the corner.”

All the kids freeze but Wheeler especially looks like he’s going to be sick. He even grabs at the bracelet around his wrist. The one he always said his best friend made him before he moved.

Eddie curses himself for even trying to test it out after that, and immediately bullshits the whole session so he can scrap any hint of demogorgans from the campaign.

After that session he drives straight to Harringtons house and demands they go over all the things he can’t include again, in detail, while he takes notes.

He doesn’t know what’s going on with these freshmen, but he knows trauma when he sees it and well he’d gotten attached to the gremlins.

When he leaves that night, he thinks Steve is looking at him with approval. Like he trusts him with their well-being now.

So here he is, still awake and blatantly staring. Watching the rhythmic rise and fall of Will’s chest—one of Mike’s shirts on him since none of his own clothes are in Hawkins anymore. 

Mike has spent a lot of time staring at Will in his life, and once it finally clicked why he liked doing it so much, he’d become hyperaware. Constantly catching himself, trying to look less when other people were around, to go unnoticed, to be subtle. To figure out what amount of staring was normal between friends—sometimes it feels like everybody else already knows things like that, and he just missed the memo. 

Will lets out a soft sigh as he shifts again. His head falls to the side, angled towards Mike, and the hand that had been resting on his stomach now lays by the side of his face. He’s got a better view of Will now for sure, and Mike wishes he didn’t feel like he was doing something he wasn’t supposed to. 

Because even in the low light, even with his eyes closed and his hair all messed up from twisting around in his sleep, Will is beautiful. 

His fingers twitch ever so slightly, a blink-and-you’d-miss-it sort of thing, but Mike’s gaze is drawn to the movement. He doesn’t understand anything anymore, he doesn’t understand Will anymore after the last few days. But god, he wants to. He wants so much. 

Most of all, at this moment at least, he wants to hold Will’s hand—like when they were little kids and that was something he was allowed to do.

Out of what I still have left to write (which isn't much! but unfortunately I likely won't be posting this till november to give my artist time to work), I'm honestly looking forward to Steve's POV interlude. He doesn't really have much emotional investment in Mike & Will and I think it'll be a breath of fresh air to write from that sort of perspective, especially considering the scene that his POV will be set in. 🤭 Under the cut is a peek at the formatting of the fic. the clues to mike's gayness are ridiculously Gay and idk why people still think hes straight. ok so the first song on his official spotify playlist is small town boy which is a song written by a gay man about running away from an intolerant hometown because of bullying and ostracism (mike received homophobic bullying + stranger things is literally set in a small american town. will moved to california (the city) at the end of s3). and we're hoping that means in s5 he runs away from home to be with will bc he was canonically sulking and depressed during the timeskip between s3 and s4 bc will moved away! to the point he kept lashing out and stopped eating! he has the most obvious internalised homophobic subtext i have ever seen in media. literally spent a whole hour today explaining byler and why it might be canon to my (straight and slightly christian) therapist and she told me that it would make absolutly no sense for the writers to take the "easy" path and send a message that prejudyce would win (in the sense of Will being rejected) in a show like that. she also said that Mike is really fruity lol
