🎂 — Does he celebrate his birthday? How, with who?

I think when he moves out into his first apartment, the first couple of years he would only celebrate his birthday with some friends, which naturally involves heavy drinking and a bad hangover, and the drinker's remorse the next morning. Susan and Max might drop by and bring him a cake and sing 'happy birthday to you' to him awkwardly while Billy thinks his head is gonna split in two and he can't eat anything because he's gonna throw up if he does.

But after that, I think he doesn't want to celebrate his birthdays at all because the last few he could barely remember due to heavy drinking, and the birthdays before that were dull and meaningless because Neil had to play nice to him and it was so fucking pretentious that Billy wanted to hurl anyway.

Max would remember his birthdays, however. They're still not on the best terms with one another, but they're getting along better than they used to. And she knows that he's lonely - he's ditched most of his old high school 'friends' because they only wanted him around when he was all fun and games - because Billy got tired of constant drinking and hangovers and hanging around with fake people. So now he's pretty much left alone to look after himself - working or working out.

So I think Max would drop by his apartment around his next birthday (wouldn't it be neat if she already had her driver's license), simply tells him 'come', grabbing his hand and pulling him along, not answering any of his questions or acknowledging his bitching when he's begrudgingly sitting in her car and grumbling about being busy with other things, Maxine.

Which he totally isn't. And Max would drive them someplace nice, to a place with a nice view or close to water (Lover's Lake perhaps) and they would sit there for a while, not talking to each other. And then Max would finally turn to Billy, hand him his gift in a small box (it's a gold earring/necklace/bracelet) and some chocolate chip cookies (Billy's favorite) in a wrapper, and then tell him:

"Happy Birthday, Billy."

And Billy's heart swells a little and the corners of his mouth turn upwards. Maybe he's crying a little bit, too, when shifts closer to Max and puts his arms around her, pulling her into a hug.

"Thank you, Max."

And maybe Max cries a little, too, when she realizes that Billy's really hugging her. For the first time in many years. And he isn't being mean, he's being nice and gentle. Like a real brother.

And it's the best birthday they've ever had together.

IHNI i was just happily reading this marvelous thing you wrote when suddenly this scene punched me right in the heart and now I'M CRYING.

The first thing he does when he gets the key is bring the baby carrier into the empty living room. He puts it on the floor in the middle of the room and picks Sam up, and spends the next twenty minutes just … going around the apartment, pointing things out.

“This is our sink. Our taps. We’ll have water on hand at any time now.”

And, “This is our stove. I’ll be able to cook food whenever we want it, now – warm food! Your favorite.”

And, “This is our shower.” Samuel coos in agreement at that as if he’s agreeing, which makes Billy smile. “It’s my third favorite thing in the world right now.”

The second, being his Camaro.

The first, by a mile; his son.

What a beautiful scene. Uffff.

this concept 💘💘💘💘💘 . they're so alike, i imagine they'd be one of those couples whose complicity is 🌟🌟🌟🌟. knowing what's gonna make the other laugh right before he does, and what to say to make them laugh too. sharing glances at each other across the room when somebody says something them both find funny or because they know what the other's thinking. and this idea of one of them channeling his mean self and the other having to physically hide to not burst into laughter is just 💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘🙌🙌🙌

sdfgh thank you!!! and omg yes, that’s exactly how i think of them- very compatible in humor once they get along and learning each other’s tells when they get together. Steve knows all the stupid voices he has to make to get Billy to cheer up when he’s angry or sad. And despite Steve trying to overall be a better person, he’s still not immune to Billy’s mean quips- always timed just right to make him crack up when he least expects it, while Billy gets this ridiculously smug expression when he makes him laugh😌💗💗

b a b e. you have an unnatural talent of pointing out all my favorite parts, and this one is probably one of the most important moments in the whole fic. i know you’ve already read the end, so i can answer this without the fear of spoiling it for you, so [cracks fingers] 

this moment, right here, is when billy finally sees steve. all of him. the masks are down, and steve is literally bleeding out on the ground, a fallen king for all to scorn, and billy. can see him, finally. for the first time. sees the way steve’s love for him is scorching, and all-consuming, but also selfish, through and through. it’s a cruel, selfish kind of love, that steve will do anything in his power to keep. will hurt billy if it means getting to keep this. him. would drown them both if it means making sure billy remains his for all eternity. billy, in that moment, still believes he’d be the one to choose to die for steve. still believes he’s the selfless one in this. still believes he’d save steve

it’s in direct juxtaposition to their final moment in the ocean, where steve finds himself in billy’s mercy, not able to swim in deep water, literally clinging onto him for life. if billy lets go, steve is lost. simple as that. and billy realizes, in that startling moment of clarity, that he doesn’t want steve to learn how to swim. he doesn’t want a future where steve doesn’t depend on him to stay alive, literally. he’d give anything to keep this dependency steve finds himself trapped in, as painfully physical as it is emotional. and i think. billy realizes, in that moment, that. essentially, they’re the same. he sees himself through steve’s eyes, sees this Thing between them the way steve does. realizes steve’s been right all along. this is what their love looks like. both of them willing to let themselves drown if it means dying wrapped around each other. merging, almost. if it means belonging, stevetobilly-and-billytosteve, so completely. so fully. so fatally. steve’s been trying to tell him all along, and. billy, salt in his lungs and the boy he loves hard enough to kill, hard enough to die for, in his arms, billy. billy finally accepts their fate. accepts this doomed thing they’ve created for the answer he’s been seeking all along. his breath is steve’s as much as it is his, and billy wouldn’t have it any other way. doesn’t need to, not anymore. this is their forever

“The final showdown!”  Tommy’s practically crowing, holding up Billy’s hand on one side, Steve’s on the other, like some kind of circus grandmaster.  Like he’s scored some kind of entertainment coup, the contest of the decade—the keg kings of Hawkins in their last, best showdown.

Not like they’re going to play fucking Twister at a lame-ass Indiana party like eight-year-olds.

True, it could be worse.  The lights are dim, and there’s reasonably okay music pulsing from the next room, audible beneath the cheers and jeers of the onlookers.  True, somebody slipped Billy a pink pill with a heart stamped on it (“Jesus, even the drugs look like they’re for eight year olds,” Billy had groused, but he’d downed it with the rest of his beer), and his thoughts are beginning to grow slippery, sliding along each other in a pleasantly hazy sort of way.  Sure, Harrington’s on the same level, eyeing him with dilated pupils, a faint sheen of sweat making his skin seem to almost glow in the overly warm room—

Billy—not about to be outdone in showmanship by fucking Tommy—tears off his shirt, basks in the cheers of the witnesses.  Takes a half-fun can of beer off the end table and spills it down his chest, lets his skin cool down as the liquid drips onto the mat.  Leans forward, knees bent, hands on his thighs, and bares his teeth at Harrington—let some pretty Indiana boy compete with him—

To his surprise, Harrington imitates him, ditching the preppy pastel polo, though he opts for a bottle of water, pours half of it down his throat and the rest over his head.  The crowd goes more than a little wild, applause and hoots and the sounds of bets being quickly made as Harrington grins over at him, as Tommy holds the spinner aloft like a ring girl in a boxing match.  A moment, a breath—then he flicks the indicator.

“Right hand, green!” he calls out.

Even high as a kite on ecstasy, even with games that’re designed for kids’ birthday parties, Billy plays to win.  He gets up in Steve’s space, tangles around his limbs, drinks in the audience’s loud approval.  At one point, they’re pressed together, Steve’s back against his front, and Billy’s tempted to make an obscene motion with his hips, play to the crowd—

But that’s turning out to be the catch.  Harrington’s not rolling over, not trying to stay aloof.  There’s something wild in him tonight, something ready to meet Billy where he’s at, ready to lock horns for the crowd.  This is good, feels so good—better than a coked-out house party, better than a post-game drunken rager.  Beating Steve Harrington in front of all these people, at his own fucking game—

“You’re gonna look so good on your ass covered in my spill,” Billy breathes, or something along those lines—meaningless trash talk, as much for his own gratification as any real sense of intimidation.

“Left hand, yellow!”

Harrington angles himself away from Billy, tilts his head, gives him a little side-eye, a half-smile.  “Are you sure you don’t mean you’re going to look so good with my spill in your ass?”

“Left foot, red!”

Billy only bares his teeth as they shift, still pressed together, an eight-limbed creature locked in battle with itself.  “I’d like to see you try—“

“Right foot, green!”

Harrington, with the grace and confounding lack of strategy that makes him such a frustrating defensive player, stretches out his foot, slips further beneath Billy.  Billy’s considering how much weight he can reasonably bring to bear without making it look like he’s trying for a foul—until Harrington cants his hips, presses his ass up against the front of Billy’s jeans—against his rapidly-hardening length—not enough for anyone to see, but enough for Billy to feel the sudden chill of exposure—for Steve’s smile to grow that much wider—

Billy’s foot slips, the beer on the mat betraying him, sending him into an awkward half-split that has him landing on Harrington, who goes down beneath him like he’s fucking expecting it.  The crowd goes wild, cheers and boos in equal measure as money changes hands, as Billy scrambles up into a defensive stance, ready to take a punch, or throw one—

But Steve only gets up, dusts himself off, takes Billy’s hand in his.  Raises them up, as if they’re twin victors in some Roman coliseum battle.  At the roar of the crowd, he lets go, flashes his toothy grin all around, takes a couple congratulatory slaps on the back.  Catches Billy’s eye, gives him a little half-smile, a tilt of his head before disappearing down the hall.

Someone’s offering Billy a red Solo cup full of beer.  He takes it, chugs—tosses it back over his shoulder.  Nods vaguely in the direction of the person who handed it to him, but his feet are already carrying him towards the hallway.  Towards Harrington.

Maybe it’s time for that final showdown, after all.

Honestly, I don't know. Maybe Steve? 😅 I mean I'd love to see what's going on in Billy boy's head sometimes, to try and understand why he's acting the way he is. But honestly, we don't know much about Steve either right? We haven't seen his parents, don't know much about his childhood and his trademark is being 'dumb' and having 'great hair', but we all know he's more than that. I think it would be an interesting week indeed. 😄

The Breakfast Club - because I need at least one 80's movie with me. And it's a pretty good high school & teen drama movie imo.

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey - this movie made me cry as a kid and the ending scene still brings tears to my eyes. I mean two talking dogs and one cat going on a huge adventure in the wildnerness. There's humor, there's drama and there's some angst too. But it's a great family movie, brings a smile to my face (along with those tears). :)

Cube - Because I love me some good psychological horror.

hey, ihni! I can't resist a bodyswap! So, tell me about it? :D

*claps hands excitedly* Weee I love a good body-swap fic! So naturally, I had to try to write one. I’m only a couple of chapters in and I don’t actually have an ending planned ... it’s one of those things that can go on forever.

But the basic premise is ... they swap bodies. And then they switch back. And then the body swaps keep happening, randomly. And don’t really stop. Like, ever.

So yeah. You can see where I have no end in sight, right? :p

I love it and I sometimes go and write a little on it, but since I doubt it’ll ever be Finished (every chapter can be read separately, kind of, and is its own ending), I don’t know how I’ll ever get to posting it.

(Also it’s not good enough for a snippet. But I’m having fun with it.)

( meaning how you see him) because i find your take so frickin interesting and also so minutely developed that i NEED. I've read your asks about the character and i always wonder who is the steve harrington you write. because he's definitely very clever and people clever above anything else, and calculating and manipulative and he's got so many preconceptions about the world and himself and such a big part of the story is built around him and what he does and decides and!! he's so complex i 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

hEY honey-nat 💕 im SO late to this and i know blw is over but my brain is kinda online today and i don’t know if that’s what you were looking for but here are some of my thoughts on blw steve! feel free to come scream at me for more or any other questions you may have i LOVE stirring my thoughts to make brain smoothies

it’s simple as that: i LOVED steve’s character in s1, and i really liked his ‘asshole to sweetheart-but-still-an-asshole’ arc in s2, and i. HATED what they did to him in s3. hated it. won’t ever accept it as canon. and i felt robbed, bc s1 steve was so compelling, and interesting, and potentially dark and dangerous and so, so broken, and i wanted. more of that

and i’m not. super invested in st as a show? i don’t mind it, but i love both steve and esp billy SO much, and that kinda. overshadows everything else. so i kept wondering how things would turn out if steve had clashed with billy back when his moral compass/angel girl scout on his shoulder, ie nancy, wasn’t in the picture yet (i do Not like nancy. if that wasn’t clear enough by now. i don’t like her. not one bit)

so anyway. s1 steve for me is. unrestrained. a big, rich fish with a name that unlocks all doors in a fishbowl of a town. he’s on the loose, and he knows he can get away with anything. maybe not. real life anything, but def high school anything. i like to think of him as someone who automatically gets what he wants, without ever having to go after it, because. to him, it’s inevitable. when he wants something, it’ll come to him. the alternative doesn’t, hasn’t ever crossed his mind. the alternative where he has to chase something, or. even worse, where he doesn’t ever get it, that. doesn’t exist in his world

i def hc steve as extremely manipulative, which is a direct and inevitable result of his emotional intelligence. i think that’s a generally accepted hc, that steve is empathetic and can read people’s emotions, but. i think. having a gift like that and being born into an environment favoring winning over everything else, stepping over others to get where you want, i think it’s bound to get sharpened into a figurative spear and used for manipulating situations and emotions, twisting them to his favor. it’s a challenge, a game, pinpointing what the person in front of him is expecting, what they want, and weaving a mirror-like mask to reflect that and bounce it back. to trick people into thinking they’re getting what they asked for, when it’s been steve’s game from the first move

and it’s all been smooth sailings, because it’s his town and he’s dictating the rules, and then

billy crashes into hawkins, into steve’s life, and turns everything upside down. because steve wants him, from the very first glance, like he’s never wanted anything else, and billy wants him too, and he’s even willing to join steve in his stupid little game, before they let parts of the mask break and slip away and show what’s behind, but

billy also leaves. steve wants to become billy’s world, take over everything else in his life, push everything out so there’s only space for him left, wants to eat billy alive and keep him inside and never let him see the sun again, but. billy keeps pushing back. keeps fighting, keeps asking for more, and more, and more. and the one thing he should be asking, if steve will let him leave, billy just. takes that. never asks. just leaves, and makes every day a goodbye, until they’ve run out of days, and out of goodbyes, and steve doesn’t get to keep what he wants. for the first time in his life

and he knows that. from the very first moment, billy’s a walking reminder of what he wants, what he can’t breathe right without, but isn’t allowed to keep. everything on billy’s screaming about leaving, and rejoining the ocean, and. abandoning steve. and it drives steve wild. that he’s been training his whole life to twist things and bend them to his will, and he still can’t manage it here, where it matters. he can have anything he wants. he can have the whole world, except his world is billy, and steve doesn’t get to have that

i think there’s an undercurrent of loss and mourning in steve that we don’t pay enough attention to. it’s easy to accept his grief in canon after barb’s death, which he feels responsible for, but i think there’s always been a ribbon of sadness running through him, that comes with the knowledge of being unwanted, of being left to his own devices by the people who are meant to protect him, and love him, and be there, with the knowledge that there’s a whole world outside of hawkins steve won’t ever hold under his palm. i think he enjoys his power, but he also realizes that it relies on town limits. the moment someone’s outside hawkins’ spell, he’s free of steve’s reign, too. and that terrifies steve. bc if something is so fickle, so easily lost, then it mustn’t be worth a lot in the first place. steve mustn’t be worth a lot

and billy is a constant reminder of that, of the world outside steve’s control. he’s the embodiment of what steve can’t have, can’t keep locked in a box under his bed, can’t order to never grow up so everything can stay the same. billy is. in some ways. steve’s adult wake up call. the reminder that high school will be over, and steve’s kingdom will crumble to pieces, and steve will be left with a paper crown and a hangover and no one but himself to blame.

I just watched Hamilton against my will the other day and now I can’t get “you’ll be back” out of my head because Jonathan Groff actually does own my whole ass.

ooh that’s a tough one but I’d definitely say it has to be drops of jupiter by train because that’s like my whole childhood. reminds me of days in the car as a kid with the radio on driving back and forth to swim practice.

44. what do you think about when you can’t fall asleep at night?

my next fanfiction. I’m not kidding lol. I wrote that last one in my head last night and finished it in the morning. most of the time tho I’m not doing much thinking and instead letting whatever tv show or movie I decided to put on put me to sleep.
