You know I've seen people compare how both Violet and Penelope having similar mothers (though in my opinion, even if it's a biased one, Portia is better than Lady Ledger) and maybe Violet sees a bit of herself in Penelope because of it. But I never see people talking about their fathers because I think that's part of how these two are shaped differently besides having some similarities.
Violet, in the words of Lady Danbury, was fortunate in life, having Lord Ledger as a father. His nickname for her beauty and brains shows us as the audience that he's an attentive father. He cares about Violet choosing her over his own happiness. And while Violet can hold her own against her mother, we get the sense that Lord Ledger is ready to come to her aid should she need it. That wink he gave her makes me partly believe it's because of his support that Violet can speak out against Lady Ledger.
Then we have Lord Featherington, who chose himself over his daughters. He chose his gambling and gambled away the only potential safety nets for his daughters that were their doweries. When Portia criticizes Penelope, Lord Featherington is never around, even when he is. He may physically be in the room, but he's lost to whatever he's reading in that newspaper, and we rarely see his face when he has it. His family can beg for his attention and he would still not give it to them. The one ball he has to chaperone at and he's not paying attention to any of his daughters. The man who should have been Penelope's, and frankly all of the Featherington sisters', first protector failed them miserably. At best, he's a bank account, and even that, he failed in.
That support and being able to rely on some in the home, to me, is the key difference between the two wallflowers. Violet was encouraged and supported by her father, leading her to be unafraid to speak her mind. Penelope was shown at a young age that she has to rely on herself, and maybe if she's quiet or subtle, they'll get bored and leave her alone. At least temporarily.

I'm supposed to be focused on Lord Featherington losing both his money and his cool but all I see are the fabulous emotions playing out on Benedict Bridgerton's face in the background. Kudos for the commitment, Luke Thompson.

Weekend Poll Results
This weekend's poll asked who you think will have the Featherington heir, assuming Portia's fraud isn't rumbled.
The results are interesting, but unsurprising.
Prudence: 12.5%
Philippa: 40.6%
Penelope: 46.9%
Whilst I am not surprised that many expect Penelope to be the one to give birth to a boy first, I do find it interesting that so many wish her to remain so strongly connected to the Featherington family. It is possible that her son will have to take the Featherington name, (there is precedence for this), and even if not, once he inherits he will be forever Lord Featherington. I have seen a lot of Penelope fans say how it will be great for her to be a Bridgerton as she escapes the Featherington household, but in the same instance many want her to be dragged back into the Featherington household as the mother of the next Lord Featherington. Very curious.
Also, to debunk a couple of things I have seen online about this.
Even if Penelope has a boy and he is the next Lord Featherington, that will not make Penelope Lady Featherington (or even Lady Bridgerton as some have suggested). Portia will remain Lady Featherington until her death, and then whoever the next Lord Featherington marries will be Lady Featherington, but Penelope will not be.
Colin will not be Lord Featherington - that is his son. Colin will remain Mr Bridgerton (or Mr Featherington if they decide to change their name to be the same as their son).
The Barony will not have a name change and become Bridgerton, so if Penelope has the next Baron Featherington he will not become Baron Bridgerton (and therefore be known as Lord Bridgerton) because that is his father's name. If there has to be a name change it will be the child - and his parents if they do not wish to have a different surname to their son.

Theresa Thompson taught her daughter to believe in love. It was a powerful force. It never left and lingered in one's heart.
"As long as you love someone, ma petite, they will never go away or leave your heart. Even after death," She said to her one night when she gently brushed her curls before she went to bed.
She supposed that was why she lay awake in bed, unable to rest. George Crane. Her best friend, her favourite person. The man she loved was here in London. He kissed her, and it was so strange, so good. He was breaking her resolve with a few words and looks.
She sat at her desk, lighting a candle. Rifling through her dresser, she looked through some of her letters - the ones form her father.
She read the letter three times. He left her. He wanted a lady with titles and riches, not her. She was a childhood dalliance and nothing more. She was here to find a husband.
She sat at breakfast, not focusing and sipping her juice until one of her cousins decided to make a snide comment. Portia did warn she should tone down her European bluntness, yet Marina ignored her time and time again, especially at the house.
"Are you sure you should eat that much toast?" Philippa asked her youngest sister, who frowned.
"Are you sure you need so many feathers in your hair, or should you not allow the birds to keep some?" Marina snapped in return.
"Papa!" Prudence protested. They did not like how she would often snap back at their attempts to critique Penelope.
"Girls, it is far too early for a quarrel," Archibald said, not taking his eyes off his newspaper. His daughter shut her mouth with a pout. Marina took another slice of toast and poured herself some orange juice pointedly, making Penelope smile.
"Thank you," Penelope whispered, and they shared a small smile.
...
"Uncle, why did you and Lady Featherington marry?"
Archibald was confused by Marina's question in the middle of the ball. She decided to take a turn with him around the room after dancing, and she sipped on her lemonade. His niece was very sharp, so he often enjoyed their conversations.
Archibald thought for a moment, "Well, I do care for Portia. We may have different tastes and ideas but care for one another. We have three beautiful daughters and a home."
"But you weren't a love match."
"You find things to love. Not everyone is lucky to fall in love right away, but you find things, and you build a life together that one can be content with," He explained, "That is the reality of most marriages. But do marry someone you like, at the very least."
There was a twinge of something - sadness, she thought? - in his eyes. He and Portia were complete opposites and she had an idea of where he was when he returned late at night. Was this the marriage she was to have?
They were approached by Colin again, "Lord Featherington. Miss Thompson. I wonder if Miss Thompson may do me the honour of a dance?" He asked, slightly nervous, but his smile is earnest.
She tried not to frown at him addressing Lord Feathrrington then her but tried to shake it off as a mere part of polite society. You speak to a man before a woman.
She was starting to agree with Portia's marry and get out idea.
He was a good dancer and said all the right things. He was such a kind man. She was sure she could see herself liking him a lot or even loving him. They could likely make one another happy and content. He had a good family. Her father would like him, she thinks.
"You are such a brilliant dancer, Miss Thompson." Colin complimented, "I always enjoy your company. Might I call on you tomorrow?"
"I would like that," Marina said sweetly. She looked around to find Penelope, knowing her cousin would likely be in a corner with Eloise.
"I think I shall bring you a bouquet of tomatoes," Colin said when they approached Penelope and Eloise, "Because you always look so surprised when I bring you flowers." Marina giggled.
"You hate tomatoes," Penelope stated, confused.
"I used to," Marina corrected, "When I was a child." She gave her cousin a look to indicate that she should stop, and she nodded subtly.
"How mature of you," Colin praised.
"Penelope still likes tomatoes. Does that make her immature?" Marina quipped.
"Not at all," Colin chuckled, smiling at his friend, "You just have refreshing energy. You are a remarkable lady, Miss Thompson,"
Marina noticed Penelope's slight frown and decided she would ask her about it later. But for now, she was rather grateful that Simon Bassett approached them all.
"Your Grace," She curtsied and he smiled and bowed.
"Apologies, Colin. But I hoped to borrow Miss Thompson on Daph's behalf?" Simon asked, and he nodded.
"I did not know that the Duchess wished to speak to me?" Marina was confused, but she did like the Duchess so far. She was kind and, like her family, slightly unconventional. She did see her snap at the viscount to leave Edwina Sharma alone.
"I wished to speak to you," Simon corrected her, "About George."
"You and George are friends," Marina said.
"So are the two of you," Simon said, "Look at how much we have in common already."
Marina shook her head with a smile. She supposed, being the godson and ward of the most terrifying woman in the ton, he was slightly unconventional.
"He is sorry about his recent behaviour," He told her seriously.
"Is he?" Marina hummed, "Tell me, what exactly is he apologising for and why has he sent his friend to apologise as opposed to speaking to me himself?"
Simon frowned, "He was with his doctor today."
Marina stopped and looked at the Duke, "His doctor?"
"I should not have said too much." Simon said, lowering his voice, "But yes. He was injured when he was... away."
"At war." Marina corrected. She wasn't one to shy from the truth of the world, "He went to war. Of course, he should need a doctor. Is it bad?"
She now thought of his behaviour - his impulsiveness, his absence. Perhaps he didn't come back whole, as most men did not. War
"He will never admit to me how bad it is. But I just wished for you to know that he has not been himself."
"Well, we cannot go back. Only forward." Marina told him, "I do not have the privilege to linger in the past. Give him my regards, but..." She shook her head, "That is all he will receive."
"He loves you." Simon said quietly, "He is a gentleman."
"It isn't the war. It is me. And it is him." Marina told him quietly, "We are no longer children - our childish dalliance, as he once put it, cannot continue into adulthood." With that, she curtsied and went to look for Penelope.
Simon was rather confused by her words. He did not know what George had said or done, but he clearly needed to have a strong word with his friend.
"Would she come to see him?" Daphne asked her husband.
"No, not yet. I believe we may need to do more." Simon mused.

For all my fellow Bridgerton Fans I need to know if I am the only one, but when we are first introduced to Marina’s pregnancy did anyone else first thought she was being raped by Lord Featherington now on my second watch through I can see we’re I misread the signs and obviously that wasn’t the case. I just need to know did anyone else get that vibe their first watch through too?

You know sometimes I think what would have happened if Kate, Sophie, Penelope had proper paternal figures around and I always come to the conclusion that Anthony, Benedict, and Colin wouldn't be able to get away with half the shit they do in their books if they did.
Kate and Penelope come from homes full of women, and their fathers are at least a few years passed by the time they meet their respective Bridgerton in the books. Poor Sophie also technically comes from a home full of women too but we don't count them except for Posey.
Like just imagine an au of Mr. Sharma, the Earl of Penwood, and Lord Featherington being alive and being good dads with these cads running around their daughters.
Mr. Sharma comes to town with his wife and daughters for a London season. The family can't really afford more than one season so they got to make this count. Then here comes the Capital R Rake, who claims to want to court one daughter but keeps making bedroom eyes at the other. When they go to Aubrey Hall Mr. Sharma pulls Anthony aside and questions which of his daughters did Anthony want to court exactly? He then tells Anthony he expects an answer and an official asking of courtship from him by the end of the trip. Anthony then has to hide from Mr. Sharma as he plans the details of his sudden engagement to Kate, and he may over gift on his end. He knows there's no way of hiding his mark on Kate's chest, and Mary for sure told her husband.
Mr. Sharma makes sure to spread the word back in London to be weary of the Bridgerton cads. While yes, socially and financially, they be a good match, their scandalous behavior will corrupt your daughters.
The Earl sees this first hand when Benedict is circling Sophie like a dog in heat. No, sir, you will not corrupt my daughter! Sophie now has the protection needed to force Benedict to put in the work for an actual courtship. None of that be my mistress here good sir! Serious suitors only!
Lord Featherington didn't believe these rumors of the Bridgerton cads at first, yes they were rakes but most gentlemen their ages had explored by that point before settling down with their wives, if they even stopped after that. But such behavior towards a gentleman's daughter? Unthinkable. His own beloved youngest daughters have been friends with the Bridgertons for years, and they've always been proper. Well, Lord Featherington had forgotten that while yes, Penelope has been friends with the Bridgertons for years. One certain Bridgerton had been away at school for most of that time, and she only really knew him in passing. In comes when Penelope is first debuted and Colin Bridgerton is home from his Grand Tour to finish out his schooling. Oh no, why is Bridgerton C looking at his daughter like he looks at a biscuit? Lord Featherington holds his breath, wondering if this year every year is when that cad Colin Bridgerton tries to corrupt his precious daughter.
