Thanks for the answer, it really helped! We have since then moved on to debate whether WWX's cultivation harmed and impacted him and how he couldn't control it because of it.

(I disagree, personally, as that is what the public is trying to claim without even understanding how WWX's ghost path works, or how any form of cultivation works. I am of the mind that nobody can use any kind of cultivation safely and in a controlled manner while being pushed to the brink as often as WWX was during that period of his life.)

Frankly, it is pretty entertaining, tho I can't say it's a riveting conversation either. Their answer to me saying that the title of the novel was a dig to WWX's cultivation path that actually subvert the trope of demonic cultivation in xianxia novels was : "No, it is because of how he had good intentions and tried to protect everyone by using bad means to achieve goodness,tho in the end, he did more bad things than good ones." And I am just sitting there, losing braincells, wondering what the heck they are talking about.

Still better than the "Both LWJ and JC spent years looking for WWX's soul after his death, LWJ literally played music everyday to call his soul to him 🙄" thing. Why do I see this so often? Like, did it happen in the book? Am I losing my mind? Genuine question here, I feel like I am losing my mind T^T.

I think that particular fanon originated from a popular fandom blogger—and is usually paired with the headcanon that Lan Wangji only went where the chaos was to “chase Wei Wuxian’s spirit”—but I think I also heard it might have been written into some of the adaptations? (Idk about that second one because I’ve only ever completed the book.) Lan Wangji is said to have “gone where the chaos is” during the war, hence his title being given then, and the Lotus Pod Seeds extra seems to imply that this behavior was inspired by his first solo journey out of The Cloud Recesses to pursue lotus pod seeds upon Wei Wuxian’s suggestion during The Cloud Recesses arc. Nowhere in the book does it say that Lan Wangji played music to calm or call Wei Wuxian’s soul. The only place in the novel where it is ever mentioned that music was played in an attempt to call forth his soul is when the sects gathered together after the first siege of the Burial Mounds and were unsuccessful in their attempt. Lan Wangji was not present for this.

As for whether Wei Wuxian’s cultivation physically harms him or not: if the ghost path was harmful to the body, then 1) Lan Wangji would reject its use and 2) Wei Wuxian would limit his use of it and refuse to showcase it to others. For the first part: while Lan Wangji had many objections to the use of the ghost path during the war, he curbs those objections at the end of Wei Wuxian’s first life and actively supports his usage of it through actions in Wei Wuxian’s second life. For the second part: Wei Wuxian uses the ghost path in his second life throughout the entire main story and continuing into the extras. He completely forgoes using a sword as his main weapon of choice. He even displays his techniques to the juniors and explains how they work, but he begins to curb some of his usage with them to give them a chance to solve nighthunts on their own instead of relying on him to solve issues for them.

😭 I was just making a crude joke abt Harry’s 🕳 BUT for me personally it’s the slightly irregular or abnormal pattern of holes that freak me out. But only sometimes? A sponge doesn’t freak me out, but lotus root (or any kind of seed pods) makes me want to rip my skin clean off. Sometimes honeycomb too. Skin lesions or diseases with circles omfg. Typically more naturally occurring patterns freak me out versus like a shower head with a bunch of dots. I get the same thing with random textures tho. Fredrik Robertsson’s 2022 silver met gala look gave me the same feeling LMAO. Harry’s sweater in particular having the dark inside with the multicolored thread surrounding it gives me seed pod-esque vibes lol and that’s where my discomfort is coming from. I just got hate bc I don't like jyl. Apparently, it's misogyny (even tho I like wq and mianmian) bc ''hating female characters is trendy'' and ''every fandom always has this thing where everyone has to hate the female characters'' and when I tried to explain that no, actually, I just don't like useless characters, male or female, they called me a liar bc I don't hate lxc? like, lxc was kinda a himbo but he was super talented???

It's not the first time this happen, but the last time it was a yzy stan so I thought it was just crazy talk, but alas, it seems that we can't dislike any characters as long as they're females ┐(￣ヘ￣)┌ Then one of their friends jumped in with a super long rant about how their family situation was so similar and how they were the jyl in the situation and they lost one of their sisters bc of it so they totally relate to her and can't help but be soft on her bc they're sure she felt the same things they did, and I was like...yk they're fictional, right?

Just. Let me dislike the super boring and so-useless-she-ends-up-being-harmful character in peace, ffs

People in this fandom constantly try to argue with their personal life and trauma dump on strangers like they're chatting about the weather... MXTX doesn't know them, or their sister, or their mother, or their bother, or their father, or their uncle, or their dog, or their imaginary friend. So why the hell are they featuring in a discussion about the fictional characters she created!?

I also don't see the YanLi/LXC comparison. I've always seen her and jc as the REALLY second rate Wen Ning/Wen Qing respectively. People act like LXC is an asshole for not immediately turning on JGY but it's natural he would have reservations when he had seen and heard him slandered and maligned during their entire acquaintance based on the circumstances of his birth. They're like : omg he was so elitist 🤪, when his treatment of JGY, the son of a prostitute who ppl didn't even want to drink tea from, is the opposite. The point is in spite of his reservations LXC still listens to the word of the most wanted man in the cultivation world and his enamored little brother!- just saying this is how things stand from LXC's pov, naturally in my pov LWJ and WWX have done nothing wrong ever <3. He's ready to twist JGY's arm to be allowed in the secret room. He stashes WWX in the Hanshi, and has him treated in the Cloud Recesses. He shows WWX the forbidden room in the library!!!! so they can investigate! People get mad he didn't straight up believe LWJ but it's not LWJ he doubts:

He looked at Wei WuXian, “You trust Young Master Wei, while I trust Jin GuangYao. The fact that Brother’s head is in his hands, neither of us have seen it with our own eyes. We only believe in what another person says based on how much we know about them.” (Chapter 63)

I think there are so many sweet LXC moments too, where it's clear he pays attention to LWJ, the things that he likes and that interest him. How he's happy for Wangji when he brings MXY to the Cloud Recesses and doesn't question him or try to control him. How he guides him to keep his rabbits even though pets are not allowed. How he tried to find a dizi for LWJ when he's drunk and upset. How he doesn't taste the Lotus seeds LWJ brought back from Yunmeng but is just happy his little bother is happy. Speaking of the lotus seed pods LWJ mentioned them once and :

Lan XiChen, “I heard you mention lotus seed pods yesterday. Uncle happened to have them be brought up the mountain today. Do you want some?”

Lan WangJi, outside the window, “I have, already.”

LXC may not be a manipulative mastermind like JGY and NHS [fondly] but he's still a talented, powerful cultivator. LWJ enjoys a great degree of independence in the Clan yet he trusts LXC and knows he can go to him with his concerns. It doesn't ever feel like WWX has that space with YanLi for honest communication when he's expected to always be smiling...

YanLi is obviously not evil but she's boring and mediocre and no amount of internet strangers projecting on her will make her or her soup more interesting to me.

If ppl can't read the entire book at least read the lotus pod extra bcos that summarizes the toxic dynamics of the Jiangs & the reason JC ended up alone - ungratefulness.

Absolutely. I wanted to reread the Lotus Pod extra before I wrote back bc you're so right. And the most ironic thing is that this would no doubt be a day that WWX would consider as a blissful, idyllic one in Lotus Pier, which is just a perfect illustration of how he glosses over everything bad that happens to him especially where it concerns his time w the Jiangs[derogatory].

I mean this post goes into detail about the whole thing but basically WWX is the sole recipient of YZY's whippings with a spiritual weapon regularly enough that he carries scars piled on his back old and new... WWX knows it's unfair to him. He exclaims that it's unfair to him!

“How unfair. Nobody else was wearing anything, but why was I the only one who got scolded and beaten up?”

Jiang Cheng, “Because you hurt the eye the most with no clothes on, for sure.”

but ofc jiang cheng couldn't give af about that. jc does give ALL the fucks tho about the thought that WWX is thinking of LWJ and wants to see him. I'm always thrown by the certainty and sheer volume of occasions jiang cheng feels the need to tell WWX, LWJ hates him. Either jiang cheng is an idiot and can't fathom that he may not know with full certainty what another person, especially one as guarded as LWJ truly feels or he's a controlling fuck who can't stand WWX having friends or relationship outside of himself and outside of those that directly tie him to Lotus Pier. Also this :

“Jiang Cheng had on a stern expression, “Let’s make this clear. I don’t want him to come, anyhow. Don’t invite him.”

Like if jc is so sure LWJ hates WWX's guts then what are the chances he would come if WWX invited him? Why would WWX inviting him pose a danger, unless he's not sure LWJ would reject WWX? And above all how is it his place to demand this? Along all his other bs there no way I can see his behavior as anything other than malicious. I've seen jc stans and other people in general think this kind of possessive, controlling, bullshit is cute, or representative of someone's affection, but IT AIN'T IT. Ppl are not your possessions.

Love the closing foreshadowing tho. As WWX turns from his thoughts of LWJ that had him smiling and happy he sees jc and his smile fades. And his words!! Cue [Apollo & the gift of prophecy]

“After a while of laughter, he turned around and looked at Jiang Cheng, who was sitting at the front of the boat eating seed pods with a long face. His smile gradually disappeared as he sighed, “Well, what an unteachable child.”

Jiang Cheng fumed, “So what if I want to eat alone?”

Wei WuXian, “Look at you, Jiang Cheng. Nevermind. You’re hopeless. Just wait to eat alone your whole life!”

i went thru the trouble of reading all of them (i legit had to tap out on one tho) tbh i’ll put them under a read more and say which ones i think are safe

1) Banquet - that one is iffy. They mention rape as like...a bedroom kink thing between them but it’s obviously a consensual thing they’re doing but the whole story is 3 parts and the entire story isn’t about it. u could probably easily skip that particular section and be alright

2) Incense Burner - FUCKING AVOID!! THIS IS THE ONE I HAD TO TAP OUT ON. like even tho its this fucking weird dream sequence thing its like rapey and noncon and even worse it involves like their younger selves so like 15-17ish in ages?? JUST NO. JUST NOOOOOOOOOO.

3) Villainous Friends - this one is about Xue Yang and i love him so ur good

4) From Dawn to Dusk - i’m pretty sure this one is mostly just boning and fluff at the end. it’s acceptable as far as BL goes i think

5) Intrusion - Dads take their Son on Demon Hunting Trip. Very Good.

6) Iron Hook - WEI WUXIAN TAKES THE KIDS ON A DEMON HUNTING FIELD TRIP. VERY GOOD

7) Lotus Seed Pod - Throwback Thursday episode of Lotus Pier, good
